RESUMO

This work aims at intensifying the simultaneous removal of nitrogen and phosphorus of an integrated aerobic granular sludge (AGS) - membrane bioreactor (MBR) by Acinetobacter junii. After acclimation and enrichment in a sequencing batch reactor (SBR), Acinetobacter junii, a kind of denitrifying phosphate accumulating organism (DPAO), was successfully screened in the used SBR. Then it was verified to be capable of effectively enhancing the performance in the simultaneous removal of nitrogen and phosphorus of AGS-MBR. In the system, DPAO (Acinetobacter junii) mainly occurred in AGS, and the highest ratio even reached 22.8%, but its competitive advantages highly depend on the size of AGS. The presented results can cultivate AGS and enrich DPAO simultaneously to improve the removal of nitrogen and phosphorus of an AGS-MBR, which provide an environmentally friendly approach to upgrade traditional wastewater treatment processes.

Bisphenol A (BPA), a ubiquitous endocrine disruptor, is implicated in the cognitive deficits observed in both children and animals. Especially, BPA-induced spatial memory deterioration during the whole development phase of rodents has been well delineated. However, whether BPA exposure on the different development phases exerts similar effects on the prefrontal cortex (PFC) dependent visual memory is still elusive. Here, we chose two exposure windows, the whole gestation and lactation phases (E0∼P21) and the whole juvenile and adolescent phases (P22∼P60), for exposing rats to BPA. The visual memory of those rats was accessed by object recognition testing in the open field after BPA exposure and a constant recovery interval. The results revealed a substantial decline of visual memory under both exposure conditions, accompanied by an increase in anxiety-like behavior in BPA-exposed rats. Notably, after a 20-day recovery period, those behavioral changes induced by BPA exposure during P22∼60, not E0∼P21, were reversed compared to the control rats. According to morphological analysis of those rats after recovery, we found that the spine density of pyramidal neurons in the PFC were significant decreased in rats with BPA exposure during E0∼P21 and there was no difference between rats with or without BPA exposure during P22∼P60. Additionally, a similar change trend in excitatory receptors expression was observed under both exposure conditions. After an additional 20 days of recovery, the behavioral changes in rats with perinatal BPA exposure reverted to the normal status. Our present findings illuminate the dynamic effects of BPA on PFC-dependent functions across two crucial early developmental stages of life.

This work gave insights into the life-cycle of aerobic granular sludge (AGS) by tracing its heterogeneity in the basic properties at different stages in a closed system (a continuous flow membrane bioreactor, MBR), including physical and chemical characteristics and microbial communities. The results indicate that the entire life-cycle consists of the following four stages, namely, the initial, growing, mature and cleaved stages, where multiple AGS properties synergistically affect the rheological properties of the AGS over its life-cycle. The storage modulus (G') of AGS reached its maximum value at the mature stage, whose value was significantly and positively correlated with the protein (PN) in extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and granule size, specifically the peak area of granule size distribution, but this value was strongly and negatively correlated with the roughness. The AGS at the mature stage would be more vulnerable to be destroyed than that at other stages under the condition of higher shear strain, such as γ = 50%, which was associated with larger granule size and fewer polysaccharide (PS)-related functional groups (especially in the soluble microbial products (SMPs) in the outermost layer of AGS), and the decrease in PS was correlated with a higher relative abundance of Chloroflexi. Additionally, the value of shear strain that AGS was subjected to had a good linear correlation (R2=0.993) with the Young's modulus, which indicated the ability of AGS to resist deformation improved with increasing values of shear strain.

BACKGROUND: This study investigated the association between insulin-like growth factor-1 and nutritional status indicators in patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis (MHD). METHODS: Patients undergoing MHD for > 3 months were included in this single-center cross-sectional study in March 2021. Clinical, demographic, and body mass data and blood samples were collected before the hemodialysis sessions. Serum insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) levels were measured using a radioimmunoassay, and serum IGF-1 standard deviation score (SDS) was calculated for MHD patients according to age and sex. The nutritional status of patients was assessed using serum albumin, serum prealbumin, handgrip strength, pinching strength, upper arm muscle circumference, lean body mass, phase angle, seven-point subjective global assessment (SGA) score, and geriatric nutritional risk index (GNRI). The patients were divided into groups according to tertiles of serum IGF-1 SDS levels. Spearman correlation analyses and univariate and multivariate binary logistic regression analyses were used to determine the association between serum IGF-1 SDS and nutritional status parameters. RESULTS: A total of 155 MHD patients (male: female = 90:65) were enrolled in the study, with a median dialysis vintage of 28.0 (11.0, 55.0) months, and an average age of 66 (65.5 ± 13.0) years. The median of IGF-1 SDS was - 0.1 (- 0.6 to 0.6). Compared to patients with higher IGF-1 SDSs, patients with lower IGF-1 SDSs had lower levels of serum ceruloplasmin (341.0 [287.5, 416.0] vs 395.0 [327.0, 451.0] vs 409.0 [349.5, 507.5], p = 0.002), serum albumin (34.7 ± 3.0 vs 37.0 ± 3.1 vs 37.8 ± 2.6, p < 0.001), serum prealbumin (270.3 [233.7, 327.8] vs 326.0 [279.3, 355.6] vs 363.0 [324.2, 398.2], p < 0.001), handgrip strength (13.8 [10.0, 20.7] vs 17.7 [10.7, 22.5] vs 23.3 [16.6, 27.8], p < 0.001), pinch strength (4.6 [3.9, 6.0] vs 4.9 (3.9, 6.9) vs 6.5 [4.7, 8.7], p = 0.002), phase angle (3.3 [3.0, 3.8] vs 3.9 [3.4, 4.7] vs 4.3 [3.6, 5.2, p < 0.001), modified Creatinine Index (83.1 ± 19.7 vs 93.1 ± 23.4 vs 113.9 ± 24.3, p < 0.001), intracellular water (14.5 ± 4.4 vs 16.1 ± 4.9 vs 16.9 ± 4.4, p = 0.031), higher extracellular water (26.9 ± 5.8 vs 25.7 ± 5.5 vs 25.1 ± 3.1, p = 0.042), and higher malnutrition risk as defined by GNRI (49.0% vs 15.7% vs 11.5%, p < 0.001) and SGA (53.9% vs 23.5% vs 7.7%, p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Lower IGF-1 SDSs are independently associated with higher malnutrition risk in patients with MHD.

Background and Aims: Chronic hepatitis B (CHB) can cause liver fibrosis and lead to cirrhosis and cancer. As the effectiveness of antiviral therapy to reverse liver fibrosis is limited, We aimed to evaluate the effect of An-Luo-Hua-Xian pill (ALHX) on fibrosis regression in CHB patients treated with entecavir (ETV). Methods: Treatment-naïve patients with CHB were randomly treated with ETV alone or combined with ALHX (ETV+ALHX) between October 1, 2013 and December 31, 2020. Demographic, laboratory, and liver histology data before and after 78 weeks of treatment were collected. The Ishak fibrosis score (F) was used and fibrosis regression required a decrease in F of ≥1 after treatment. Results: A total of 780 patients were enrolled, and 394 with a second liver biopsy after treatment were included in the per-protocol population, 132 in ETV group and 262 in ETV+ALHX group. After 78 weeks of treatment, the fibrosis regression rate in the ETV+ALHX group was significantly higher than that of the ETV group at baseline F≥3 patients: 124/211 (58.8%) vs. 45/98 (45.9%), p=0.035. The percentage of patients with a decreased liver stiffness measurement (LSM) was higher in the ETV+ALHX group: 156/211 (73.9%) vs. 62/98 (63.%), p=0.056. Logistic regression analysis showed that ETV combined with ALHX was associated with fibrosis regression [odds ratio (OR)=1.94, p=0.018], and a family history of hepatocellular carcinoma was on the contrary. (OR=0.41, p=0.031). Conclusions: ETV combined with ALHX increased liver fibrosis regression in CHB patients.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether the combination of neoadjuvant hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (NHIPEC) plus intravenous neoadjuvant chemotherapy (IV NACT) has superior efficacy to IV NACT alone. DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. SETTING: Two tertiary referral university hospitals. POPULATION: Patients with ovarian cancer who received NACT-interval debulking surgery (IDS) between 2012 and 2020. METHODS: The tumour response to NACT was evaluated with the chemotherapy response score (CRS) system. Survival outcomes were compared. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: CRS 3, progression-free survival (PFS), and overall survival (OS). RESULTS: In total, 127 patients were included, and 46 received NHIPEC plus IV NACT. The addition of NHIPEC was independently associated with an increased likelihood of CRS 3 (p = 0.033). Patients who received NHIPEC + IV NACT had significantly improved PFS compared with those who received IV NACT alone (median PFS: 22 versus 16 months, p < 0.001). The use of NHIPEC was identified as an independent predictor of PFS (p < 0.0001). OS did not differ significantly between treatment groups (p = 0.062), although a trend favouring NHIPEC was noted. Incidence of grade 3-4 adverse events and the surgical complexity score of IDS were similar between the two groups. CONCLUSIONS: Compared with IV NACT alone, the combination of NHIPEC and IV NACT resulted in improved tumour response and longer PFS. The addition of NHIPEC did not increase the risk of adverse effects or affect the complexity of IDS.

BACKGROUND: Interferon regulatory factor 1 (IRF1) is an important transcription factor that activates the type I interferon (IFN-I) response and plays a vital role in the antiviral immune response. Although IRF1 has been identified in several mammals, little information related to its function in canines has been described. RESULTS: In this study, canine IRF1 (CaIRF1) was cloned. After a series of bioinformatics analyses, we found that the CaIRF1 protein structure was similar to that of other animal IRF1 proteins, including a conserved DNA-binding domain (DBD), an IRF-association domain 2 (IAD2) domain and two nuclear localization signals (NLSs). An indirect immunofluorescence assay (IFA) revealed that CaIRF1 was mainly distributed in the nucleus. Overexpression of CaIRF1 in Madin-Darby canine kidney cells (MDCK) induced high levels of interferon ß (IFNß) and IFN-stimulated response element (ISRE) promoter activation and induced interferon-stimulated gene (ISG) expression. Subsequently, we assayed the antiviral activity of CaIRF1 against vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) and canine parvovirus type-2 (CPV-2) in MDCK cells. Overexpression of CaIRF1 effectively inhibited the viral yields of VSV and CPV-2, while knocking down of CaIRF1 expression mildly increased viral gene copies. CONCLUSIONS: CaIRF1 is involved in the cellular IFN-I signaling pathway and plays an important role in the antiviral response.

Background: Ovarian cancer is one of the most common cause of cancer death in women due to its late diagnosis and susceptibility to drug resistance. Adenosine (ADO) signaling plays a key role in immune activity and tumor progression. In this study, we constructed a signature of ADO metabolism related genes expression in patients with ovarian cancer. Methods: A total of 372 ovarian cancer patients from TCGA was used as training set and 1,137 patients from six GEO datasets were as validation set. The gene expression and drug response inhibitory concentration values for ovarian cancer cell line from GDSC were used for drug sensitivity analysis. The non-negative matrix factorization algorithm and ssGSVA were used to construct the ADO score. Results: Patients with high ADO score had shorter overall survival (OS) than those with low ADO score in both training set (HR = 1.42, 95% CI, 1.06-1.88) and validation sets (pooled HR = 1.24, 95% CI = 1.02-1.51). In GSEA analysis, genes in ATP synthesis related pathways were enriched in the low ADO score group (adjusted P value = 0.02). Further, we observed that the high ADO score group had significantly higher levels of most cancer hallmark signatures (all adjusted P values < 0.01) and T cell dysfunction and exclusion signatures than the low ADO score group (all adjusted P values < 0.001). Patients with lower ADO score tended to be sensitive to common drugs including Olaparib and Paclitaxel (adjusted P values = 0.05 and 0.04, respectively). Conclusions: In conclusion, the established ADO signature could be used as a prognostic biomarker to stratify ovarian cancer patients and had the potential to guide the drug exploitation and personalized therapy selection.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to investigate the significance of preoperative C-reactive protein-to-albumin ratio (CAR), neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) in predicting overall survival (OS) of osteosarcoma, to establish a nomogram of an individualized prognostic prediction model for osteosarcoma. METHODS: Two hundred thirty-five patients with osteosarcoma from multiple centers were included in this study. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) and Youden index were used to determine the optimal cutoff values ​​for CAR, NLR, and PLR. Univariate analysis using COX proportional hazards model to identify factors associated with OS in osteosarcoma, and multivariate analysis of these factors to identify independent prognostic factors. R software (4.1.3-win) rms package was used to build a nomogram, and the concordance index (C-index) and calibration curve were used to assess model accuracy and discriminability. RESULTS: Univariate analysis revealed that the OS of osteosarcoma is significantly correlated (P < 0.05) with CAR, NLR, PLR, Enneking stage, tumor size, age, neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT), and high alkaline phosphatase. Multivariate analysis confirmed that CAR, NLR, Enneking stage, NACT and tumor size are independent prognostic factors for OS of osteosarcoma. The calibration curve shows that the nomogram constructed from these factors has acceptable consistency and calibration capability. CONCLUSION: Preoperative CAR and NLR were independent predictors of osteosarcoma prognosis, and the combination of nomogram model can realize individualized prognosis prediction and guide medical practice.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is a known endocrine disruptor and has been gradually replaced in industrial applications by other bisphenols, such as bisphenol S (BPS). However, whether these analogues are any safer for the central nervous system remains elusive. Here, we investigated behavioral impairments in mice after BPA and BPS exposure from postnatal days 21-49 (P21~P49). Results showed that BPA (0.1 and 1 mg/kg/d) and BPS (1 mg/kg/d) impaired emotion and social interaction of mice, while low dose exposure (0.1 mg/kg/d) induced no observable changes on emotion in mice. The behavioral deficits were accompanied by hyperactivation of the basolateral amygdala (BLA), i.e., dose-dependent increase in neuronal firing rates and local field potential power. In addition, glutamate receptors were up-regulated in the BLA, showing the same activation trend after exposure to different doses of BPA and BPS. Taken together, these findings imply that BPA and BPS cause behavioral impairments in juvenile mice by disrupting local neuronal activation in the BLA. Although BPS exerted less adverse effects on mice than BPA at the low dose, it does not appear to be a safe alternative to BPA in regard to brain function after prolonged high-volume exposure.

BACKGROUND: Ginseng can help regulate brain excitability, promote learning and memory, and resist cerebral ischemia in the central nervous system. Ginsenosides are the major effective compounds of Ginseng, but their protein targets in the brain have not been determined. METHODS: We screened proteins that interact with the main components of ginseng (ginsenosides) by affinity chromatography and identified the 14-3-3 ζ protein as a potential target of ginsenosides in brain tissues. RESULTS: Biolayer interferometry (BLI) analysis showed that 20(S)-protopanaxadiol (PPD), a ginseng saponin metabolite, exhibited the highest direct interaction to the 14-3-3 ζ protein. Subsequently, BLI kinetics analysis and isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) assay showed that PPD specifically bound to the 14-3-3 ζ protein. The cocrystal structure of the 14-3-3 ζ protein-PPD complex showed that the main interactions occurred between the residues R56, R127, and Y128 of the 14-3-3 ζ protein and a portion of PPD. Moreover, mutating any of the above residues resulted in a significant decrease of affinity between PPD and the 14-3-3 ζ protein. CONCLUSION: Our results indicate the 14-3-3 ζ protein is the target of PPD, a ginsenoside metabolite. Crystallographic and mutagenesis studies suggest a direct interaction between PPD and the 14-3-3 ζ protein. This finding can help in the development of small-molecular compounds that bind to the 14-3-3 ζ protein on the basis of the structure of dammarane-type triterpenoid.

Objective: To evaluate the efficacy of subcutaneous etonogestrel implants for adenomyosis.Methods: We conducted a clinical observational study of 20 patients suffering from adenomyosis treated with subcutaneous etonogestrel implants from August 2015 to July 2017 and followed up for 36 months. We evaluated the efficacy of subcutaneous etonogestrel implants primarily based on the following indicators: the pictorial blood loss assessment chart (PBAC) for menstrual blood volume, changes in bleeding patterns, the visual analog scale (VAS) pain score for dysmenorrhea, uterine volume, serum cancer antigen 125 (CA125) levels, hemoglobin levels and side effects.Results: During the 3 years of follow-up, subcutaneous etonogestrel implants were removed from six patients, among whom one was diagnosed with endometrial cancer, four had an increased menstrual blood volume, and one entered menopause. In total, 14 patients were treated with subcutaneous etonogestrel implants for 3 years. Among these patients, the number of patients with heavy menstrual bleeding and high PBAC and VAS scores and serum CA125 levels was significantly decreased after implantation compared with that before implantation. In the eight patients with anemia, hemoglobin levels increased gradually. However, the uterine volumes did not significantly change. Bleeding patterns were changed but were tolerable.Conclusion: Subcutaneous etonogestrel implants represent a new option for the clinical treatment of adenomyosis for patients who refuse surgery.

Bromodomain-containing protein 4 (BRD4) binds acetylated lysine residues on the N-terminal tails of histones through two bromodomains (BD1 and BD2) to regulate gene transcription. Inhibiting one or both of bromodomains resulted in different phenotypes, suggesting BD1 and BD2 may have different functions. Here we report the characterisation of a natural product 3',4',7,8-tetrahydroxyflavone as a novel and potent selective BRD4 inhibitor. The compound is 100-fold more selective for BRD4-BD2 (IC50 = 204 nM) than BRD4-BD1 (IC50=17.9 µM). Co-crystal structures show 3',4',7,8-tetrahydroxyflavone binds to the acetylated lysine binding pocket of BRD4-BD1 or BRD4-BD2, but establishes more interactions with BRD4-BD2 than BRD4-BD1. Our data suggest 3',4',7,8-tetrahydroxyflavone as a potent selective inhibitor of BRD4-BD2 with a novel chemical scaffold. Given its distinct chemical structure from current BRD4 inhibitors, this compound may open the door for a novel class of anti-BRD4 inhibitors by serving as a lead compound.

Objective: To investigate whether CA125 normalization following neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT) can complement the chemotherapy response system (CRS) in the prognostication of patients with tubo-ovarian high-grade serous carcinoma (HGSC). Methods: In total, 118 HGSC patients who received NACT followed by interval debulking surgery (IDS) for FIGO stage IIIC-IV disease were included, and their clinical data were retrospectively reviewed. The primary endpoint was progression-free survival (PFS). Cox regression analysis was performed to identify predictors of PFS. Results: Following NACT, CRS3 was noted in 35 patients (29.7%), and CA125 normalization (≤ 35 U/ml) was noted in 54 patients (45.8%). Both CRS3 and CA125 normalization were identified as independent prognosticators of PFS. Combining these two factors, we stratified the 106 patients into three groups with different risks of recurrence: low-risk group (CRS3 + post-NACT CA125≤ 35 U/ml; n = 17, 14.4%), intermediate-risk group (CRS3 + post-NACT CA125 > 35 U/ml; n = 19, 16.1%) and high-risk group (CRS1-2; n= 82, 69.5%). The differences in PFS between the three groups were significant (log-rank test, P < 0.0001). In Cox regression analyses, the new stratification method was found to have an independent prognostic effect. Conclusion: Both the CRS system and the normalization of CA125 following NACT could reliably predict the risk of recurrence following primary treatment. The combination of the two factors refined the prognostic stratification of HGSC patients who were treated with NACT and IDS.

BACKGROUND: Human brucellosis imposes a heavy burden on the health and economy of endemic regions. Since 2011, China has reported at least 35,000 human brucellosis cases annually, with more than 90% of these cases reported in the northern. Given the alarmingly high incidence and variation in the geographical distribution of human brucellosis cases, there is an urgent need to decipher the causes of such variation in geographical distribution. METHOD: We conducted a retrospective epidemiological study in Shaanxi Province from January 1, 2005 to December 31, 2018 to investigate the association between meteorological factors and transmission of human brucellosis according to differences in geographical distribution and seasonal fluctuation in northwestern China for the first time. RESULTS: Human brucellosis cases were mainly distributed in the Shaanbei upland plateau before 2008 and then slowly extended towards the southern region with significant seasonal fluctuation. The results of quasi-Poisson generalized additive mixed model (GAMM) indicated that air temperature, sunshine duration, rainfall, relative humidity, and evaporation with maximum lag time within 7 months played crucial roles in the transmission of human brucellosis with seasonal fluctuation. Compared with the Shaanbei upland plateau, Guanzhong basin had more obvious fluctuations in the occurrence of human brucellosis due to changes in meteorological factors. Additionally, the established GAMM model showed high accuracy in predicting the occurrence of human brucellosis based on the meteorological factors. CONCLUSION: These findings may be used to predict the seasonal fluctuations of human brucellosis and to develop reliable and cost-effective prevention strategies in Shaanxi Province and other areas with similar environmental conditions.

Objective: In 2012, we proposed and described a modified triple incision technique (MTIT) for vulvar cancer patients with locally advanced disease. The MTIT has undergone a series of modifications, and a modified MTIT (M-MTIT) has been developed. The purpose of this study was to introduce the M-MTIT and compare it with the MTIT. Study design: This was a retrospective cohort study. Fifty-seven vulvar cancer patients with clinical stage T2 (≥ 4 cm) or T3 disease were included. Of these patients, 28 underwent the MTIT and 29 underwent the M-MTIT. Data on surgery-related complications and survival outcomes were compared. Results: Patients who were treated with the M-MTIT developed significantly less surgery-related morbidities than patients treated with the MTIT (24.1% vs. 60.7%, P = 0.005). Wound breakdown was the most common complication in our cohort, which occurred less frequently in the M-MTIT group than in the MTIT group (10.3% vs. 35.7%, P = 0.022). Multivariate logistic regression analysis identified the M-MTIT as an independent predictor of a reduced risk of wound breakdown. The incidence of other complications, including lymphedema, wound infection and cellulitis, was lower in the M-MTIT group than in the MTIT group; however, the differences did not reach statistical significance. The median follow-up time of this study was 33 months. Kaplan-Meier survival graphs did not show significant differences in recurrence-free survival or overall survival between the two groups. Conclusions: The M-MTIT correlates with lower morbidity rates than the MTIT and does not compromise oncological safety. The M-MTIT can be considered a safe and feasible option for vulvar cancer patients with locally advanced disease.

Background: The chemotherapy response score (CRS) system is a reproducible prognostic tool for patients receiving neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT) for tubo-ovarian high-grade serous carcinoma (HGSC). Achieving CRS 3 following NACT can be used as a surrogate for progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS). This study aimed to identify predictors of CRS 3 and develop a predictive nomogram. Methods: Data were extracted from 106 HGSC patients receiving NACT. Logistic regression was used to identify independent predictors for CRS 3. A nomogram was established based on the multivariate regression model. Results: All patients received three cycles of NACT, and CRS 3 was observed in 24 (22.6%) patients. Compared with patients in the CRS 1-2 group, patients in the CRS 3 groups had significantly improved PFS (log-rank test P < 0.0001). The multivariate regression analysis identified post-NACT CA125, percent decrease in CA125, post-NACT human epididymis protein 4 (HE4), and post-NACT hemoglobin level as independent predictors of CRS 3. The Hosmer-Lemeshow test showed goodness-of-fit of this regression model (P = 0.272). The nomogram including these factors presented good discrimination (area under the curve = 0.82), good calibration (mean absolute error = 0.039), and a net benefit within the threshold probabilities of CRS 3 > 5%. Conclusions: We validated the prognostic role of the CRS system and developed a nomogram that predicts the possibility of CRS 3 following NACT. The nomogram helps to identify patients who would benefit the most from NACT. More studies are warranted to validate this model.

BACKGROUND: Brucellosis is a serious public health problem primarily affecting livestock workers. The strong seasonality of the disease indicates that climatic factors may play important roles in the transmission of the disease. However, the associations between climatic variability and human brucellosis are still poorly understood. METHODS: Data for a 14-year series of human brucellosis cases and seven climatic factors were collected in Yulin City from 2005 to 2018, one of the most endemic areas in northern China. Using cross-correlation analysis, the Granger causality test, and a distributed lag non-linear model (DLNM), we assessed the quantitative relationships and exposure-lag-response effects between monthly climatic factors and human brucellosis. RESULTS: A total of 7103 cases of human brucellosis were reported from 2005 to 2018 in Yulin City with a distinct peak between April and July each year. Seasonal fluctuations in the transmission of human brucellosis were significantly affected by temperature, sunshine duration, and evaporation. The effects of climatic factors were non-linear over the 6-month period, and higher values of these factors usually increased disease incidence. The maximum separate relative risk (RR) was 1.36 (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.03-1.81) at a temperature of 17.4 °C, 1.12 (95% CI, 1.03-1.22) with 311 h of sunshine, and 1.18 (95% CI, 0.94-1.48) with 314 mm of evaporation. In addition, the effects of these three climatic factors were cumulative, with the highest RRs of 2.27 (95% CI, 1.09-4.57), 1.54 (95% CI, 1.10-2.18), and 1.27 (95% CI, 0.73-2.14), respectively. CONCLUSIONS: In Yulin, northern China, variations in climatic factors, especially temperature, sunshine duration, and evaporation, contributed significantly to seasonal fluctuations of human brucellosis within 6 months. The key determinants of brucellosis transmission and the identified complex associations are useful references for developing strategies to reduce the disease burden.
