RESUMO

Image perturbation is a promising technique to assess radiomic feature repeatability, but whether it can achieve the same effect as test-retest imaging on model reliability is unknown. This study aimed to compare radiomic model reliability based on repeatable features determined by the two methods using four different classifiers. A 191-patient public breast cancer dataset with 71 test-retest scans was used with pre-determined 117 training and 74 testing samples. We collected apparent diffusion coefficient images and manual tumor segmentations for radiomic feature extraction. Random translations, rotations, and contour randomizations were performed on the training images, and intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC) was used to filter high repeatable features. We evaluated model reliability in both internal generalizability and robustness, which were quantified by training and testing AUC and prediction ICC. Higher testing performance was found at higher feature ICC thresholds, but it dropped significantly at ICC = 0.95 for the test-retest model. Similar optimal reliability can be achieved with testing AUC = 0.7-0.8 and prediction ICC > 0.9 at the ICC threshold of 0.9. It is recommended to include feature repeatability analysis using image perturbation in any radiomic study when test-retest is not feasible, but care should be taken when deciding the optimal feature repeatability criteria.

RESUMO

The estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) is a comprehensive index that is widely used to assess renal function. Although studies have confirmed a correlation between eGFR and dietary vitamin C, the impact of varying levels of vitamin C on eGFR remains unclear. Additionally, the interaction between dietary magnesium intake and vitamin C concentration on eGFR is not well understood. As such, the objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between dietary magnesium intake and vitamin C in relation to eGFR. This study analyzed the data of consecutive NHANES from 2005 to 2018. We included 17,633 participants aged 20 or older and used multiple linear regression analysis to evaluate the relationship between dietary vitamin C and eGFR. Dietary Mg intake from experimental data was dichotomized into a low dietary Mg intake group (≤254 mg/day) and a normal dietary Mg intake group (>254 mg/day). To evaluate the impact of dietary magnesium intake on eGFR, a multivariable linear regression was conducted utilizing an interaction test between dietary vitamin C and eGFR. We discovered a positive association between dietary vitamin C content and eGFR. The relationship between dietary vitamin C levels and eGFR differed between individuals with low Mg intake and those with normal Mg intake (ß: 2.96 95% CI:1.63 ~ 4.29 vs. ß: 1.05 95% CI: -0.15 to 2.25), and the positive association of high dietary vitamin C content with eGFR was stronger in the low Mg intake group. Furthermore, we observed that dietary magnesium intake significantly altered the positive association between dietary vitamin C and eGFR (interaction value of 0.020). Our experimental study revealed that the interaction between dietary magnesium and dietary vitamin C can significantly impact eGFR. This finding carries significant implications for the treatment of diseases resulting from abnormal eGFR, as well as the selection of clinically relevant drugs.

RESUMO

Understanding the water use efficiency (WUE) and adaptation strategies of plants in high-temperature and rainy areas is essential under global climate change. The leaf carbon content (LCC) and intrinsic WUE of 424 plant samples (from 312 plant species) on Hainan Island were measured to examine their relationship with geographical and climatic factors in herbs, trees, vines and ferns. The LCC ranged from 306.30 to 559.20 mg g-1, with an average of 418.85 mg g-1, and decreased with increasing mean annual temperature (MAT). The range of intrinsic WUE was 8.61 to 123.39 µmol mol-1 with an average value of 60.66 µmol mol-1. The intrinsic WUE decreased with increasing altitude and relative humidity (RH) and wind speed (WS), but increased with increasing latitude, MAT and rainy season temperature (RST), indicating that geographical and climatic factors affect the intrinsic WUE. Stepwise regression suggested that in tropical regions with high temperature and humidity, the change in plant intrinsic WUE was mainly driven by WS. In addition, the main factors affecting the intrinsic WUE of different plant functional types of plants are unique, implying that plants of different plant functional types have distinctive adaptive strategies to environmental change. The present study may provide an insight in water management in tropical rainforest.

RESUMO

Background: Currently, telomere length is known to reflect the replication potential and longevity of cells, and many studies have reported that telomere length is associated with age-related diseases and biological aging. Studies have also shown that vitamin C acts as an oxidant and free radical scavenger to protect cells from oxidative stress and telomere wear, thus achieving anti-aging effects. At present, there are few and incomplete studies on the relationship between vitamin C and telomere length, so this study aims to explore the relationship between vitamin C and telomere length. Methods: This study used cross-sectional data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES) database from 1999 to 2002, a total of 7,094 participants were selected from all races in the United States. Male participants accounted for 48.2% and female participants accounted for 51.8%. The correlation between vitamin C and telomere length was assessed using a multiple linear regression model, and the effect of dietary vitamin C on telomere length was obtained after adjusting for confounding factors such as age, gender, race, body mass index (BMI), and poverty income ratio (PIR). Results: This cross-sectional study showed that vitamin C was positively correlated with telomere length, with greater dietary vitamin C intake associated with longer telomeres (ß = 0.03, 95% CI: 0.01-0.05, P = 0.003). Conclusion: This study shows that vitamin C intake is positively correlated with human telomere length, which is of guiding significance for our clinical guidance on people's health care, but our study need to be confirmed by more in-depth and comprehensive other research results.

RESUMO

Working memory (WM) and inhibitory control (IC) are two fundamental and supportive components of executive function (EF) that are critical for school-age children. However, the direct comparison of the training and transfer effects of WM and IC training in school-age children still needs to be improved. This study adopted a "pre-, post-, and delayed posttest" design to compare the training, near-transfer, and far-transfer effects of WM and IC in school-age children. A total of 60 children aged 8 to 10 years were randomly assigned to the WM training group, IC training group, or control group. Children in the WM and IC training groups completed 12 sessions of multiple adaptive training tasks tapping different subcomponents of WM (visual-spatial and verbal WM) and IC (interference control and response inhibition) separately. In the pretraining, posttraining, and 6-month follow-up stages, we used WM and IC tasks to evaluate training and near-transfer effects and used analogical reasoning tasks to evaluate far-transfer effects. Results showed significant training effects on visual-spatial and verbal WM, near-transfer effects on response inhibition, and far-transfer effects on analogical reasoning for WM training in the posttraining stage. The improvements in verbal WM and analogical reasoning were maintained for 6 months, whereas for IC training only the training effects on response inhibition and the far-transfer effects on analogical reasoning were observed in the posttraining stage and only the training effects on response inhibition were maintained for 6 months. Results suggested positive training and asymmetrical transfer effects of WM and IC training, which provide new evidence for the effectiveness of WM and IC training in school-age children.

RESUMO

Biphasic calcium phosphate (BCP) scaffold has been widely applied to bone regeneration because of its good biocompatibility and bone conduction property. However, the low mechanical strength and the lack of angiogenic and osteogenic induction properties have restricted its application in bone tissue regeneration. In this study, we combined zinc (Zn2+) doping and silk fibroin (SF) coating with expectation to enhance compressive strength, osteogenesis and angiogenesis of BCP scaffolds. The phase composition, morphology, porosity, compressive strength, in vitro degradation and cell behaviors were investigated systematically. Results showed that the scaffold coated with SF exhibited almost 3 times of compressive strength without compromising its porosity compared with the uncoated scaffold. Zn2+ doping and SF coating synergistically enhanced the alkaline phosphatase activity and osteogenesis-related genes expression of mouse bone mesenchymal stem cells (mBMSCs). Furthermore, SF coating notably improved the proliferation, cell viability and in vitro angiogenesis of human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs). This work provides a novel way to modify BCP scaffolds simultaneously with enhancing mechanical strength and biological properties.

RESUMO

The substitution of manure for chemical nitrogen fertilizers has great impacts on the growth of rubber seedlings and soil environment, with implications for rubber cultivation and transplantation and soil environment improvement. In this study, rubber seedlings of thermal research '7-33-97' strain were cultivated under four treatments: No fertilizer application (CK), only application of chemical fertilizer (N), manure replacing 50% chemical fertilizer (M+N), and manure replacing 100% chemical fertilizer (M). Plants parameters (including plant height, basal diameter, biomass, and chlorophyll), soil physicochemical properties (including pH, soil organic carbon and nitrogen, soil enzyme activities), and their relationships were investigated. The results showed that plant height, basal diameter, biomass, and chlorophyll content in the M+N and M treatments were significantly higher, while underground biomass and root-shoot ratio were significantly lower than those of in N treatment. Compared with CK, soil pH was significantly increased in the M treatment, decreased in the N treatment, and was not changed in the M+N treatment. Soil ammonium and nitrate content in the M+N and M treatments were significantly lower, while soil organic carbon content, the activity of ß-1,4-glucosidase (BG), ß-1,4-N-acetylglucosaminidase (NAG) and leucine aminopeptidase (LAP) were significantly higher than those of in N treatment. Results of correlation analysis showed that soil pH was negatively correlated with soil ammonium and nitrate content, but positively correlated with BG and NAG activities. The structural equation model analysis showed that soil pH had significant positive effects on seedling quality index, while nitrate content had significant negative effects, and soil enzyme activities had no significant effect. Those results indicated that soil pH and nitrate content were the important driving factors on the growth of rubber seedlings. The manure replacing of 50% and 100% chemical nitrogen fertilizer could promote rubber seedlings growth, improve soil environment, and promote sustainable development of rubber production in Danzhou City, Hainan Province.

RESUMO

Background: According to the broaden-and-build model of positive mood, positive emotions are believed to broaden cognition resources and build psychological resiliency, to help incur positive psychological outcomes. Aim: We examined hope as a potential mediator of the association between positive mood and suicide protection (viz., life satisfaction and reasons for living) in adults. We hypothesized that positive mood would be associated with greater suicide protection through broadening hope agency and building hope pathways. Method: A sample of 320 college students completed measures of positive emotions, hope, and suicide protection. Results: Results from bootstrapped mediation testing indicated that hope agency, but not hope pathways, partially or fully mediated the relationship between positive mood and suicide protection. Limitations: It is not clear whether these findings are generalizable to a more diverse adult population. Also, it is not possible to rule out alternative causal models involving positive emotions and suicide protection. Conclusion: These findings provide some promising preliminary evidence for how positive emotions might help build hope agency to foster greater suicide protection in adults.

RESUMO

This study aims to investigate the feasibility of improving the prognosis stratification of the N staging system of Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma (NPC) from quantitative spatial characterizations of metastatic lymph node (LN) for NPC in a multi-institutional setting. A total of 194 and 284 NPC patients were included from two local hospitals as the discovery and validation cohort. Spatial relationships between LN and the surrounding organs were quantified by both distance and angle histograms, followed by principal component analysis. Independent prognostic factors were identified and combined with the N stage into a new prognostic index by univariate and multivariate Cox regressions on disease-free survival (DFS). The new three-class risk stratification based on the constructed prognostic index demonstrated superior cross-institutional performance in DFS. The hazard ratios of the high-risk to low-risk group were 9.07 (p < 0.001) and 4.02 (p < 0.001) on training and validation, respectively, compared with 5.19 (p < 0.001) and 1.82 (p = 0.171) of N3 to N1. Our spatial characterizations of lymph node tumor anatomy improved the existing N-stage in NPC prognosis. Our quantitative approach may facilitate the discovery of new anatomical characteristics to improve patient staging in other diseases.

RESUMO

Surface sediments of polluted urban rivers can be a reservoir of hydrophobic persistent organic pollutants (POPs). In this study, we comprehensively assessed the contamination of two groups of POPs, that is, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), in 173 black-odorous urban rivers in China. Spatial distribution of PCBs and PBDEs showed similar patterns but very different contamination levels in surface sediments, that is, average concentrations of 10.73 and 401.16 ng/g dw for the ∑PCBs and ∑PBDEs, respectively. Tetra-/di-CBs and deca-BDE are major PCBs and PBDEs and accounted for 59.11 and 95.11 wt % of the ∑PCBs and ∑PBDEs, respectively. Compared with the persistence of PBDEs, the EF changes of chiral PCBs together with previous cultivation evidence indicated indigenous bioconversion of PCBs in black-odorous urban rivers, particularly the involvement of uncharacterized Dehalococcoidia in PCB dechlorination. Major PCB sources (and their relative contributions) included pigment/painting (25.36%), e-waste (22.92%), metallurgical industry (13.25%), and e-waste/biological degradation process (10.95%). A risk assessment indicated that exposure of resident organisms in urban river sediments to deca-/penta-BDEs could pose a high ecological risk. This study provides the first insight into the contamination, conversion and ecological risk of PCBs and PBDEs in nationwide polluted urban rivers in China.

RESUMO

Obligate and non-obligate organohalide-respiring bacteria (OHRB) play central roles in the geochemical cycling and environmental bioremediation of organohalides. Their coexistence and interactions may provide functional redundancy and community stability to assure organohalide respiration efficiency but, at the same time, complicate isolation and characterization of specific OHRB. Here, we employed a growth rate/yield tradeoff strategy to enrich and isolate a rare non-obligate tetrachloroethene (PCE)-respiring Geobacter from a Dehalococcoides-predominant microcosm, providing experimental evidence for the rate/yield tradeoff theory in population selection. Surprisingly, further physiological and genomic characterizations, together with co-culture experiments, revealed three unique interactions (i.e., free competition, conditional competition and syntrophic cooperation) between Geobacter and Dehalococcoides for their respiration of PCE and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), depending on both the feeding electron donors (acetate/H2 vs. propionate) and electron acceptors (PCE vs. PCBs). This study provides the first insight into substrate-dependent interactions between obligate and non-obligate OHRB, as well as a new strategy to isolate fastidious microorganisms, for better understanding of the geochemical cycling and bioremediation of organohalides.

RESUMO

Lack of osteogenic capacity limits the bone repair effect of calcium phosphate cement (CPC). In present work, bivalent manganese ion (Mn2+) doped ß-tricalcium phosphate (Mn-TCP) was incorporated into CPC to enhance its osteogenic ability. The incorporation of Mn-TCP promoted the hydration reaction of CPC. The presence of Mn2+ made the hydration products finer. When adding 10 wt% Mn-TCP in CPC (Mn-CPC-1), the setting time of CPC was shortened, whereas the strength and injectability were not changed. Mouse Bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (mBMSCs) on Mn-CPC-1 and CPC with 20 wt% Mn-TCP (Mn-CPC-2) presented better adhesion and spreading behaviors. Besides, Mn-CPC-1 promoted the gene levels of ALP, Col-I and OC while Mn-CPC-2 promoted the gene levels of Runx2 and OC. Cellular behaviors were related to two points: one was the increase of adsorption capacity of proteins (e.g. BSA) after changing the surface properties of bone cements; and the other was the biological role of Mn2+ released from CPC in osteogenesis. All the results indicated that CPC incorporated with 10 wt% Mn-TCP has good osteogenesis and proper physicochemical properties, which will be a prospective biomaterial applying in the area of bone regeneration.

RESUMO

Job engagement denotes the extent to which an employee invests the full self in performing the job. Extant research has investigated the positive outcomes of job engagement, paying little attention to its potential costs to the organizations. Integrating the extended self theory and the literature on psychological ownership as our overarching theoretical framework, we develop and test the double-edged effects of job engagement on workplace outcomes through the mediating role of job-based psychological ownership. Analyses of two survey studies with multisource multiphase data support that job engagement can lead to positive workplace outcomes including in-role performance and organizational citizenship behaviors (OCBs) through job-based psychological ownership. At the same time, job engagement is also positively related to negative workplace outcomes including territorial behavior, knowledge hiding, and pro-job unethical behavior through the same mechanism of job-based psychological ownership. These indirect effects of job engagement on negative work outcomes are amplified by employees' avoidance motivation. The theoretical and practical implications are discussed.
