RESUMO

Artificial intelligence (AI) use in diabetes care is increasingly being explored to personalise care for people with diabetes and adapt treatments for complex presentations. However, the rapid advancement of AI also introduces challenges such as potential biases, ethical considerations, and implementation challenges in ensuring that its deployment is equitable. Ensuring inclusive and ethical developments of AI technology can empower both health-care providers and people with diabetes in managing the condition. In this Review, we explore and summarise the current and future prospects of AI across the diabetes care continuum, from enhancing screening and diagnosis to optimising treatment and predicting and managing complications.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Atopic dermatitis (AD) affects both adults and children, impacting their quality of life and productivity; however, traditional systemic treatments such as cyclosporine have limitations. Emerging novel systemic interventions, including monoclonal antibodies and Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitors, have been shown to improve patient outcomes. OBJECTIVE: This study evaluates the cost-effectiveness of novel systemic interventions for moderate-to-severe AD in adults compared with the best supportive care (BSC) in Singapore. METHODS: The economic evaluation used a hybrid model consisting of a decision tree and Markov model. Treatment responses at 16 weeks were based on a network meta-analysis that was developed specifically for this study. Long-term response, discontinuation rates, episodes of flares and treatment-emergent adverse events were obtained from key dupilumab, abrocitinib, baricitinib and upadacitinib trials. The study had a 5-year time horizon and considered the healthcare payer's perspective. Sensitivity and scenario analyses were performed as well. RESULTS: Baricitinib 4 mg and 2 mg have the lowest incremental cost-effectiveness ratios, at Singapore dollars (S$) 60,730/quality-adjusted life-year (QALY) and S$66,842/QALY, respectively. Upadacitinib 30 mg offers the highest incremental QALY gain, while baricitinib 2 mg offers the least. The cost of the intervention drugs accounted for the highest proportion of the overall expenses (68-93%) for those in the maintenance state. Other influential factors within the model included (1) the incremental utility derived from intervention response; (2) the probability of achieving Eczema Area and Severity Index 75 (EASI-75) with BSC; and (3) the relative risk of achieving EASI-75 with the interventions. In a scenario where the cost of all drugs is matched to the lowest-priced drug, the top three cost-effectiveness interventions are dupilumab, upadacitinib 30 mg and abrocitinib 200 mg, respectively. CONCLUSION: The interventions are not found to be cost-effective at their existing prices when compared with BSC. Ideally, a composite score of treatment success and quality-of-life scores ought to be included, but such data were unavailable. Future research should consider conditional discontinuation data and long-term outcomes when such data become accessible.

RESUMO

Objectives: Gait speed indicates the individual's functional status and predicts overall health. This study aims to determine (1) the intra- and inter-rater and test-retest reliability of the dynamic 4 m gait speed test protocol; (2) establish the normative reference values of habitual and fast gait speeds in community-dwelling healthy Singaporean adults aged 21 to 80; and (3) explore the association of age, gender, height, weight, and body mass index (BMI) on gait speed. Methods: This prospective cross-sectional study recruited healthy ambulatory community-dwelling Singaporeans aged 21 to 80 who could ambulate independently without aid. Participants were excluded if they required walking aids; were pregnant; or had physical, medical, or cognitive conditions that may affect gait. Each participant completed at least two habitual and fast gait speed test trials via a 4 m walkway with a dynamic start. The data were analysed by descriptive statistics, the Mann-Whitney test, the Spearman coefficient, and the interclass correlation coefficient (ICC). Results: In total, 178 males and 201 females were included in the data analysis. The median age was 45.0 years [interquartile range (IQR) 26.2-59.0], and the median height was 1.64 metres (m) (IQR 1.58-1.70). The median habitual gait speed was 1.08 metre/second (m/s) (IQR 0.97-1.22), and the fast gait speed was 1.55 m/s (IQR 1.40-1.70). The ICC for reliability ranged from 0.84 to 0.99, indicating that the 4 m gait speed test had good-to-excellent reliability. Conclusions: Gait speeds were not influenced by gender but declined with age advancement. Age and height and age and BMI were weakly correlated to habitual and fast gait speed, respectively. We established the norm values for the 4 m gait speeds in Singapore and proved it to be a reliable gait speed assessment ready for immediate community applications.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Myopia affects 1.4 billion individuals worldwide. Notably, there is increasing evidence that choroidal thickness plays an important role in myopia and risk of developing myopia-related conditions. With the advancements in artificial intelligence (AI), choroidal thickness segmentation can now be automated, offering inherent advantages such as better repeatability, reduced grader variability, and less reliance for manpower. Hence, we aimed to evaluate the agreement between AI-automated and manual segmented measurements of subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT) using two swept-source optical coherence tomography (OCT) systems. METHODS: Subjects aged ≥ 16 years, with myopia of ≥ 0.50 diopters in both eyes, were recruited from the Prospective Myopia Cohort Study in Singapore (PROMYSE). OCT scans were acquired using Triton DRI-OCT and PLEX Elite 9000. OCT images were segmented both automatically with an established SA-Net architecture and manually using a standard technique with adjudication by two independent graders. SFCT was subsequently determined based on the segmentation. The Bland-Altman plot and intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) were used to evaluate the agreement. RESULTS: A total of 229 subjects (456 eyes) with mean [± standard deviation (SD)] age of 34.1 (10.4) years were included. The overall SFCT (mean ± SD) based on manual segmentation was 216.9 ± 82.7 µm with Triton DRI-OCT and 239.3 ± 84.3 µm with PLEX Elite 9000. ICC values demonstrated excellent agreement between AI-automated and manual segmented SFCT measurements (PLEX Elite 9000: ICC = 0.937, 95% CI: 0.922 to 0.949, P < 0.001; Triton DRI-OCT: ICC = 0.887, 95% CI: 0.608 to 0.950, P < 0.001). For PLEX Elite 9000, manual segmented measurements were generally thicker when compared to AI-automated segmented measurements, with a fixed bias of 6.3 µm (95% CI: 3.8 to 8.9, P < 0.001) and proportional bias of 0.120 (P < 0.001). On the other hand, manual segmented measurements were comparatively thinner than AI-automated segmented measurements for Triton DRI-OCT, with a fixed bias of - 26.7 µm (95% CI: - 29.7 to - 23.7, P < 0.001) and proportional bias of - 0.090 (P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: We observed an excellent agreement in choroidal segmentation measurements when comparing manual with AI-automated techniques, using images from two SS-OCT systems. Given its edge over manual segmentation, automated segmentation may potentially emerge as the primary method of choroidal thickness measurement in the future.

RESUMO

The rapid pace of population ageing worldwide has prompted the need to better understand the ageing process. The current study, titled the Longitudinal Follow-up of the CHI (LFC) study, was a 3-year follow-up study of an earlier study titled the Community Health and Intergenerational (CHI) study. The LFC study looked to examine longitudinal changes in their cognitive functioning and psychosocial outcomes across the 3-year period. Additionally, the current study built upon the earlier CHI study by collecting neuroimaging data and exploring the long-term effects of non-pharmacological interventions, which were not examined in the prior study. A total of 653 community-dwelling participants from the baseline CHI study cohort were invited to take part in the LFC study, where they underwent a battery of neuropsychological assessments, psychosocial questionnaires, a Magnetic Resonance Imaging scan and a voice recording segment. The current study would holistically track longitudinal changes in cognitive functioning and psychosocial outcomes in the ageing population in Singapore. Unique associations between linguistics and neuroimaging data alongside cognitive and psychosocial outcomes would be explored. This study also serves to guide the development of new interventions for older adults and assist in improving the well-being of the local and global ageing population.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in a greater workload in the health care system. Therefore, health care professionals (HCPs) continue to experience high levels of stress, resulting in mental health disorders. From a preventive perspective, building resilience has been associated with reduced stress and mental health disorders and promotes HCPs' intent to stay. Despite the benefits of resilience training, few studies provided an in-depth understanding of the contextual factors, implementation, and mechanisms of impact that influences the sustainability of resilience programs. Therefore, examining target users' experiences of the resilience program is important. This will provide meaningful information to refine and improve future resilience programs. OBJECTIVE: This qualitative study aims to explore HCPs' experiences of participating in the web-based Building Resilience At Work (BRAW) program. In particular, this study aims to explore the contextual and implementational factors that would influence participants' interaction and outcome from the program. METHODS: A descriptive qualitative approach using individual semistructured Zoom interviews was conducted with participants of the web-based resilience program. A framework analysis was conducted, and it is guided by the process evaluation framework. RESULTS: A total of 33 HCPs participated in this qualitative study. Three themes depicting participants' experiences, interactions, and impacts from the BRAW program were elucidated from the framework analysis: learning from web-based tools, interacting with the BRAW program, and promoting participants' workforce readiness. CONCLUSIONS: Findings show that a web-based asynchronous and self-paced resilience program is an acceptable and feasible approach for HCPs. The program also led to encouraging findings on participants' resilience, intent to stay, and employability. However, continued refinements in the components of the web-based resilience program should be carried out to ensure the sustainability of this intervention. RESUMO

In light of growing interest in using emerging large language models (LLMs) for self-diagnosis, we systematically assessed the performance of ChatGPT-3.5, ChatGPT-4.0, and Google Bard in delivering proficient responses to 37 common inquiries regarding ocular symptoms. Responses were masked, randomly shuffled, and then graded by three consultant-level ophthalmologists for accuracy (poor, borderline, good) and comprehensiveness. Additionally, we evaluated the self-awareness capabilities (ability to self-check and self-correct) of the LLM-Chatbots. 89.2% of ChatGPT-4.0 responses were 'good'-rated, outperforming ChatGPT-3.5 (59.5%) and Google Bard (40.5%) significantly (all p < 0.001). All three LLM-Chatbots showed optimal mean comprehensiveness scores as well (ranging from 4.6 to 4.7 out of 5). However, they exhibited subpar to moderate self-awareness capabilities. Our study underscores the potential of ChatGPT-4.0 in delivering accurate and comprehensive responses to ocular symptom inquiries. Future rigorous validation of their performance is crucial to ensure their reliability and appropriateness for actual clinical use.

RESUMO

Introduction: Our study aimed to examine the relationship between cardiovascular diseases (CVD) with peripapillary retinal fiber layer (RNFL) and macular ganglion cell-inner plexiform layer (GCIPL) thickness profiles in a large multi-ethnic Asian population study. Methods: 6,024 Asian subjects were analyzed in this study. All participants underwent standardized examinations, including spectral domain OCT imaging (Cirrus HD-OCT; Carl Zeiss Meditec). In total, 9,188 eyes were included for peripapillary RNFL analysis (2,417 Malays; 3,240 Indians; 3,531 Chinese), and 9,270 eyes (2,449 Malays, 3,271 Indians, 3,550 Chinese) for GCIPL analysis. History of CVD was defined as a self-reported clinical history of stroke, myocardial infarction, or angina. Multivariable linear regression models with generalized estimating equations were performed, adjusting for age, gender, ethnicity, diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidaemia, chronic kidney disease, body mass index, current smoking status, and intraocular pressure. Results: We observed a significant association between CVD history and thinner average RNFL (ß = -1.63; 95% CI, -2.70 to -0.56; p = 0.003). This association was consistent for superior (ß = -1.79, 95% CI, -3.48 to -0.10; p = 0.038) and inferior RNFL quadrant (ß = -2.14, 95% CI, -3.96 to -0.32; p = 0.021). Of the CVD types, myocardial infarction particularly showed significant association with average (ß = -1.75, 95% CI, -3.08 to -0.42; p = 0.010), superior (ß = -2.22, 95% CI, -4.36 to -0.09; p = 0.041) and inferior (ß = -2.42, 95% CI, -4.64 to -0.20; p = 0.033) RNFL thinning. Among ethnic groups, the association between CVD and average RNFL was particularly prominent in Indian eyes (ß = -1.92, 95% CI, -3.52 to -0.33; p = 0.018). CVD was not significantly associated with average GCIPL thickness, albeit a consistent negative direction of association was observed (ß = -0.22, 95% CI, -1.15 to 0.71; p = 0.641). Discussion: In this large multi-ethnic Asian population study, we observed significant association between CVD history and RNFL thinning. This finding further validates the impact of impaired systemic circulation on RNFL thickness.

RESUMO

Purpose: To examine the 6-year incidence of visual impairment (VI) and identify risk factors associated with VI in a multiethnic Asian population. Design: Prospective, population-based, cohort study. Participants: Adults aged ≥ 40 years were recruited from the Singapore Epidemiology of Eye Diseases cohort study at baseline. Eligible subjects were re-examined after 6 years. Subjects included in the final analysis had a mean age of 56.1 ± 8.9 years, and 2801 (50.5%) were female. Methods: All participants underwent standardized examination and interviewer-administered questionnaire at baseline. Incidences were standardized to the Singapore Population Census 2010. A Poisson binomial regression model was used to evaluate the associations between baseline factors and incident presenting VI. Main Outcome Measures: Incident presenting VI was assessed at the 6-year follow-up visit. Visual impairment (presenting visual acuity < 20/40), low vision (presenting visual acuity < 20/40 but ≥ 20/200), and blindness (presenting visual acuity < 20/200) were defined based on United States definition. Results: A total of 5551 subjects (2188 Chinese, 1837 Indians, and 1526 Malays) were evaluated, of whom 514 developed incident presenting VI over 6 years. Malays had a higher incidence of low vision and blindness (13.0%; 0.6%) than Indians (7.0%; 0.1%) and Chinese (7.7%; 0.2%). Among Malay individuals with VI at baseline, 52.8% remained visually impaired after 6 years, which was considerably higher than Chinese (32.4%) and Indians (37.2%). Older age (per decade; relative risk [RR] = 1.59), a history of cardiovascular disease (RR = 1.38), current smoking (RR = 1.31), smaller housing type (1- to 2-room public flat; RR = 2.01), and no formal education (RR = 1.63) at baseline were associated with a higher risk of incident VI (all P ≤ 0.027). Older age (> 60 years) contributed the highest population attributable risk to incident VI (27.1%), followed by lower monthly income (Singapore dollar < $2000; 26.4%) and smaller housing type (24.7%). Overall, undercorrected refractive error (49.1%) and cataract (82.6%) were leading causes for low vision and blindness, respectively. This was consistently observed across the 3 ethnicities. Conclusions: In this multiethnic Asian population, Malays had a higher VI incidence compared to Indians and Chinese. Leading causes of VI are mostly treatable, suggesting that more efforts are needed to further mitigate preventable visual loss. RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Workplace violence is a universal phenomenon faced by employees in all industries but more so by employees working in sectors that require interpersonal contact, especially with individuals who may be violent, distressed, or vulnerable. Globally, healthcare professionals working in the emergency and psychiatric sectors are at the highest risk of workplace violence. In fact, healthcare professionals in the psychiatric setting have a higher risk rate of facing workplace violence opposed to other healthcare settings. Workplace violence can lead to adverse physical and psychological outcomes and impact the quality of care provided to patients. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to explore nurses' experiences with workplace violence and the impact of violence on nurses. Whereas the objectives of this study are to explore and analyze mental health nurses' experiences with workplace violence in Brunei Darussalam, identify and explore the impact of violence on mental health nurses, and discuss nurses' coping mechanisms following a workplace violence experience. DESIGN: Qualitative explorative study. SETTING(S): Mental Health Unit Kiarong of Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha Hospital, Brunei Darussalam. PARTICIPANTS: Nurses (n = 12). METHODS: Data was collected by conducting individual via online platforms. The interviews were carried out in English and/or Malay, the verbatim transcripts produced were transcribed in their source languages and only relevant excerpts were translated into English for the write-up. The data were analyzed utilizing thematic analysis by the researcher independently. RESULTS: This study identified three themes: Violence as a norm in the psychiatric setting, perceived impact of workplace violence, and "Talk, Report and Accept" as Coping mechanisms. CONCLUSIONS: In conclusion, it is apparent that globally workplace violence is normalized in the nursing industry, especially in the psychiatric setting. Workplace violence yields a plethora of negative long-term and short-term impacts on nurses. Despite this, workplace violence often goes unreported for numerous reasons but mainly due to the lack of changes after reporting. Nurses should be encouraged to report all instances of workplace violence by demonstrating effective changes and providing hazard pay. The management should actively attempt to reduce the risk of workplace violence by preemptively equipping nurses with the necessary training including identification of potential risks of workplace violence, effective de-escalation methods, and proper control and restraint methods.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Large language models (LLMs) are garnering wide interest due to their human-like and contextually relevant responses. However, LLMs' accuracy across specific medical domains has yet been thoroughly evaluated. Myopia is a frequent topic which patients and parents commonly seek information online. Our study evaluated the performance of three LLMs namely ChatGPT-3.5, ChatGPT-4.0, and Google Bard, in delivering accurate responses to common myopia-related queries. METHODS: We curated thirty-one commonly asked myopia care-related questions, which were categorised into six domains-pathogenesis, risk factors, clinical presentation, diagnosis, treatment and prevention, and prognosis. Each question was posed to the LLMs, and their responses were independently graded by three consultant-level paediatric ophthalmologists on a three-point accuracy scale (poor, borderline, good). A majority consensus approach was used to determine the final rating for each response. 'Good' rated responses were further evaluated for comprehensiveness on a five-point scale. Conversely, 'poor' rated responses were further prompted for self-correction and then re-evaluated for accuracy. FINDINGS: ChatGPT-4.0 demonstrated superior accuracy, with 80.6% of responses rated as 'good', compared to 61.3% in ChatGPT-3.5 and 54.8% in Google Bard (Pearson's chi-squared test, all p ≤ 0.009). All three LLM-Chatbots showed high mean comprehensiveness scores (Google Bard: 4.35; ChatGPT-4.0: 4.23; ChatGPT-3.5: 4.11, out of a maximum score of 5). All LLM-Chatbots also demonstrated substantial self-correction capabilities: 66.7% (2 in 3) of ChatGPT-4.0's, 40% (2 in 5) of ChatGPT-3.5's, and 60% (3 in 5) of Google Bard's responses improved after self-correction. The LLM-Chatbots performed consistently across domains, except for 'treatment and prevention'. However, ChatGPT-4.0 still performed superiorly in this domain, receiving 70% 'good' ratings, compared to 40% in ChatGPT-3.5 and 45% in Google Bard (Pearson's chi-squared test, all p ≤ 0.001). INTERPRETATION: Our findings underscore the potential of LLMs, particularly ChatGPT-4.0, for delivering accurate and comprehensive responses to myopia-related queries. Continuous strategies and evaluations to improve LLMs' accuracy remain crucial. RESUMO

The scanning superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) fabricated on the tip of a sharp quartz pipette (SQUID-on-tip) has emerged as a versatile tool for the nanoscale imaging of magnetic, thermal, and transport properties of microscopic devices of quantum materials. We present the design and performance of a scanning SQUID-on-tip microscope in a top-loading probe of a cryogen-free dilution refrigerator. The microscope is enclosed in a custom-made vacuum-tight cell mounted at the bottom of the probe and is suspended by springs to suppress vibrations caused by the pulse tube cryocooler. Two capillaries allow for the in situ control of helium exchange gas pressure in the cell that is required for thermal imaging. A nanoscale heater is used to create local temperature gradients in the sample, which enables quantitative characterization of relative vibrations between the tip and the sample. The spectrum of the vibrations shows distinct resonant peaks with a maximal power density of about 27 nm/Hz1/2 in the in-plane direction. The performance of the SQUID-on-tip microscope is demonstrated by magnetic imaging of the MnBi2Te4 magnetic topological insulator, magnetization and current distribution imaging in a SrRuO3 ferromagnetic oxide thin film, and thermal imaging of dissipation in graphene.

RESUMO

Targeting molecular processes of aging will enable people to live healthier and longer lives by preventing age-related diseases. Geroprotectors are compounds with the potential to increase healthspan and lifespan. Even though many of them have been tested in animal models, the translation to humans is limited. Alpha-Ketoglutarate (AKG) has been studied widely in model animals, but there are few studies testing its geroprotective properties in humans. ABLE is a double blinded placebo-controlled randomized trial (RCT) of 1 g sustained release Ca-AKG versus placebo for 6 months of intervention and 3 months follow up including 120 40-60-year-old healthy individuals with a higher DNA methylation age compared to their chronological age. The primary outcome is the decrease in DNA methylation age from baseline to the end of the intervention. A total of 120 participants will be randomized to receive either sustained release Ca-AKG or placebo. Secondary outcomes include changes in the inflammatory and metabolic parameters in blood, handgrip strength and leg extension strength, arterial stiffness, skin autofluorescence, and aerobic capacity from baseline to 3 months, 6 months, and 9 months. This study will recruit middle-aged participants with an older DNA methylation age compared to their chronological age, and test whether supplementation with Ca-AKG can reduce DNA methylation age. This study is unique in its inclusion of biologically older participants.

RESUMO

The ferroelectric photovoltaic effect has been extensively studied for possible applications in energy conversion and photo-electrics. The reversible spontaneous polarization gives rise to a switchable photovoltaic behavior. However, despite its long history, the origin of the ferroelectric photovoltaic effect still lacks a full understanding since multiple mechanisms such as bulk and Schottky-barrier-related interface effects are involved. Herein, we report a comprehensive study on the photovoltaic response of BiFeO3-based vertical heterostructures, using multiple strategies to clarify its origin. We found that, under white light illumination, polarization-modulated Schottky barrier at the interface is the dominating mechanism. By varying the top metal contacts, only the photovoltaic effect of the polarization downward state is strongly modulated, suggesting selective interface contribution in different polarization states. A Schottky-barrier-free device shows negligible photovoltaic effect, suggesting the lack of bulk photovoltaic effect in vertical heterostructures under white light illumination.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Large language models (LLMs) are fast emerging as potent tools in healthcare, including ophthalmology. This systematic review offers a twofold contribution: it summarises current trends in ophthalmology-related LLM research and projects future directions for this burgeoning field. METHODS: We systematically searched across various databases (PubMed, Europe PMC, Scopus and Web of Science) for articles related to LLM use in ophthalmology, published between 1 January 2022 and 31 July 2023. Selected articles were summarised, and categorised by type (editorial, commentary, original research, etc) and their research focus (eg, evaluating ChatGPT's performance in ophthalmology examinations or clinical tasks). FINDINGS: We identified 32 articles meeting our criteria, published between January and July 2023, with a peak in June (n=12). Most were original research evaluating LLMs' proficiency in clinically related tasks (n=9). Studies demonstrated that ChatGPT-4.0 outperformed its predecessor, ChatGPT-3.5, in ophthalmology exams. Furthermore, ChatGPT excelled in constructing discharge notes (n=2), evaluating diagnoses (n=2) and answering general medical queries (n=6). However, it struggled with generating scientific articles or abstracts (n=3) and answering specific subdomain questions, especially those regarding specific treatment options (n=2). ChatGPT's performance relative to other LLMs (Google's Bard, Microsoft's Bing) varied by study design. Ethical concerns such as data hallucination (n=27), authorship (n=5) and data privacy (n=2) were frequently cited. INTERPRETATION: While LLMs hold transformative potential for healthcare and ophthalmology, concerns over accountability, accuracy and data security remain. Future research should focus on application programming interface integration, comparative assessments of popular LLMs, their ability to interpret image-based data and the establishment of standardised evaluation frameworks.

RESUMO

Double-perovskite oxides have attracted recent attention due to their attractive functionalities and application potential. In this paper, we demonstrate the effect of dual controls, i.e., the deposition pressure of oxygen (PO2) and lattice mismatch (ε), on tuning magnetic properties in epitaxial double-perovskite Sr2FeReO6 films. In a nearly lattice matched Sr2FeReO6/SrTiO3 film, the ferrimagnetic-to-paramagnetic phase transition occurs when PO2 is reduced to 30 mTorr, probably due to the formation of Re4+ ions that replace the stoichiometric Re5+ to cause disorders of B-site ions. On the other hand, a large compressive strain or tensile strain shifts this critical PO2 to below 1 mTorr or above 40 mTorr, respectively. The observations can be attributed to the modulation of B-site ordering by epitaxial strain through affecting elemental valence. Our results provide a feasible way to expand the functional tunability of magnetic double-perovskite oxides that hold great promise for spintronic devices.

RESUMO

In research enabling preclinical development and attaining a deeper understanding of the behavior of metallodrugs in cancer cells with acquired resistance, intracellular Pt accumulation could be considered an important biomarker and analytical focus. In this work, Pt accumulation patterns in terms of the number of cells and Pt mass in single cells were precisely defined by using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) operating in a fast time-resolved analysis mode. This technique is otherwise known as single-cell (SC)-ICP-MS. By applying the nascent and validated SC-ICP-MS technique, comparisons across three Pt drugs (cisplatin, carboplatin, and oxaliplatin) in the A2780 and A2780cis ovarian cancer cell models could be made. Additional roles of transporters on top of passive diffusion and the drugs' bioactivity could be postulated. The SC-ICP-MS-based observations also served as a cross-validation point to augment preexisting research findings on Pt-resistance mechanisms. Conjectures regarding S and Fe metabolism were also derived based on an additional and direct ICP-MS analysis of endogenous elements. Overall, our work not only confirms the utility of SC-ICP-MS in chemotherapeutic research, but also provided insights into further ICP-MS-based analytical capacities to be developed.

RESUMO

Plant pathogens damage crops and threaten global food security. Plants have evolved complex defense networks against pathogens, using crosstalk among various signaling pathways. Key regulators conferring plant immunity through signaling pathways include protein-coding genes and non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs). The discovery of ncRNAs in plant transcriptomes was first considered "transcriptional noise". Recent reviews have highlighted the importance of non-coding RNAs. However, understanding interactions among different types of noncoding RNAs requires additional research. This review attempts to consider how long-ncRNAs, small-ncRNAs and circular RNAs interact in response to pathogenic diseases within different plant species. Developments within genomics and bioinformatics could lead to the further discovery of plant ncRNAs, knowledge of their biological roles, as well as an understanding of their importance in exploiting the recent molecular-based technologies for crop protection.
