Cleft type affects speech outcomes, but exact relationships remain unclear as outcome measures vary. The primary aim was to investigate the relationship between cleft type and speech outcome using different measures in 4-to-6-year-olds with non-syndromic clefts. Secondary aims were to explore the relationships between (i) speech measures used; and (ii) parent perception of speech intelligibility and listener familiarity. Twenty-two pre-schoolers with clefts, plus one parent for each child, were recruited through a hospital outpatient clinic. Children with cleft lip and palate (CLP; n = 11) and those with cleft palate only (CP; n = 11), matched on age and time of palate repair, were compared on Percentage Consonants Correct (PCC), clinician-reported speech intelligibility, and parent rating on the Intelligibility-in-Context Scale (ICS). Children with CLP had significantly lower PCC scores than children with CP (p = .020), but had no significant differences in their clinician- or parent-reported speech intelligibility. Clinician-reported speech intelligibility correlated significantly with both PCC (τ = .594, p < 0.01) and ICS (τ = .424, p = 0.009). No significant correlation was found between PCC and ICS (τ =.197, p = 0.113). Overall, parents rated their child's intelligibility higher for familiar compared to unfamiliar communication partners (τ = 2.325, p = 0.001, r = .76). Cleft type is crucial for intervention planning when objective measures are employed. Speech outcomes should be evaluated at impairment, activity, and participation levels, and by different communication partners, to comprehensively evaluate communicative effectiveness.

Picture databases are commonly used in experimental work on various aspects of emotion processing. However, existing standardized facial databases, typically used to explore emotion recognition, can be augmented with more contextual information for studying emotion and social perception. Moreover, the perception of social engagement, i.e., the degree of interaction or engagement inferred between the people in target pictures, has not been measured. In this paper, we describe the development of a database comprising 203 black-and-white line drawings depicting people within various situational contexts, and normed on perceived emotional valence, intensity, and social engagement, a new construct. Analyses of ratings collected from 62 young adults (30 females, 32 males; mean age 22 years) revealed the typical quadratic relationship between valence and intensity, i.e., stimuli that are more emotionally charged, whether positively or negatively valenced, are more intense than emotionally-neutral stimuli. Moreover, the results showed significant linear and quadratic relationships between valence and social engagement ratings, indicating that emotionally-charged social scenes were perceived as more engaging than emotionally-neutral social scenes. This new database will facilitate investigations of how people perceive and interpret social and emotional information in everyday interactions, and is offered as a resource to experimenters involved in social and/or emotional processing research.

In spelling-to-dictation tasks, skilled spellers consistently initiate spelling of high-frequency words faster than that of low-frequency words. Tainturier and Rapp's model of spelling shows three possible loci for this frequency effect: spoken word recognition, orthographic retrieval, and response execution of the first letter. Thus far, researchers have attributed the effect solely to orthographic retrieval without considering spoken word recognition or response execution. To investigate word frequency effects at each of these three loci, Experiment 1 involved a delayed spelling-to-dictation task and Experiment 2 involved a delayed/uncertain task. In Experiment 1, no frequency effect was found in the 1200-ms delayed condition, suggesting that response execution is not affected by word frequency. In Experiment 2, no frequency effect was found in the delayed/uncertain task that reflects the orthographic retrieval, whereas a frequency effect was found in the comparison immediate/uncertain task that reflects both spoken word recognition and orthographic retrieval. The results of this two-part study suggest that frequency effects in spoken word recognition play a substantial role in skilled spelling-to-dictation. Discrepancies between these findings and previous research, and the limitations of the present study, are discussed.

Malay, a language spoken by 250 million people, has a shallow alphabetic orthography, simple syllable structures, and transparent affixation--characteristics that contrast sharply with those of English. In the present article, we first compare the letter-phoneme and letter-syllable ratios for a sample of alphabetic orthographies to highlight the importance of separating language-specific from language-universal reading processes. Then, in order to develop a better understanding of word recognition in orthographies with more consistent mappings to phonology than English, we compiled a database of lexical variables (letter length, syllable length, phoneme length, morpheme length, word frequency, orthographic and phonological neighborhood sizes, and orthographic and phonological Levenshtein distances) for 9,592 Malay words. Separate hierarchical regression analyses for Malay and English revealed how the consistency of orthography-phonology mappings selectively modulates the effects of different lexical variables on lexical decision and speeded pronunciation performance.
