Backgrounds: Improving quality of life (QOL) is one of the main aims of lung transplantation (LTx). There is a need to identify those who have poor quality of life early. However, research addressing inter individual quality of life variability among them is lacking. This study aims to identify group patterns in quality of life among lung transplant recipients and examine the predictors associated with quality of life subgroups. Methods: In total, 173 lung transplant recipients were recruited from one hospital in Guangdong Province between September 2022 and August 2023. They were assessed using the Lung Transplant Quality of Life scale (LT-QOL), Mindful Attention Awareness Scale (MAAS), Life Orientation Test-Revised scale (LOT-R), and Positive and Negative Affect Scale (PANAS). Latent profile analysis was used to identify QOL subtypes, and logistic regression analysis was used to examine the associations between latent profiles and sociodemographic and psychosocial characteristics. Results: Two distinct QOL profiles were identified: "low HRQOL" profile [N = 53 (30.94%)] and "high HRQOL" profile [N = 120 (69.06%)]. Single lung transplant recipients, and patients who reported post-transplant infection, high levels of negative emotion or low levels of mindfulness and optimism were significantly correlated with the low QOL subgroup. Conclusion: Using the domains of the LT-QOL scale, two profiles were identified among the lung transplant recipients. Our findings highlighted that targeted intervention should be developed based on the characteristics of each latent class, and timely attention must be paid to patients who have undergone single lung transplantation, have had a hospital readmission due to infection, exhibit low levels of optimism, low levels of mindfulness or high negative emotions.

BACKGROUND: Nurses with a strong professional self-concept tend to exhibit a positive mindset and strong work engagement, delivering high-quality patient care. Although numerous quantitative studies have examined the factors impacting professional self-concept, there remains a limited exploration of these factors from the perspective of nurses themselves. METHODS: This qualitative descriptive study uses the PERMA theory and Social Cognitive Theory as the theoretical framework. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 15 nurses from six public hospitals in China. The data were analyzed thematically using a combination of inductive and deductive approaches. RESULTS: Nurses' understanding of professional self-concept could be divided into four categories: professional identity, competence, care, and knowledge. Factors influencing nurses' professional self-concept were categorized into eight subthemes in three domains: (1) personal factors, including psychological qualities and attitude towards the nursing profession; (2) occupational-related behavioral factors, including role-oriented behavior and knowledge-oriented behavior; and (3) work environment and external factors, including external evaluation and perceptions of nurses, time allocation, nursing work tasks, work atmosphere, school education, and perceived supports. CONCLUSIONS: This study found that, although nurses had different personal experiences, their perceptions of professional self-concept were similar. Nurses' professional self-concept is a multidimensional concept and involves various factors, such as personality, work-related characteristics, environment, and family. To thrive in a nursing career, nurses must discern the factors that can enhance or hinder their professional self-concept. By identifying and adjusting these factors, personalized support and positive interventions can be tailored to meet nurses' specific needs, which ultimately nurtures their professional development. TRIAL REGISTRATION: This study was registered on December 14, 2022, in the Chinese Clinical Trial Registry (ChiCTR2200066699) as part of our ongoing study.

AIM: This study aimed to investigate the heterogeneity of academic resilience among nursing students using latent profile analysis and its associated influencing factors. BACKGROUND: Nursing students experience higher levels of stress compared to their peers in other professions, and the cultivation of academic resilience plays a pivotal role in their ability to effectively cope with this stress. Academic resilience not only facilitates success in the face of academic adversity but also contributes to the promotion of mental well-being among nursing students. However, the current research on the academic resilience of nursing students has predominantly focused on a scale-centered total score approach, disregarding individual variability, and hindering the development to inform personalized interventions for enhancing academic resilience. DESIGN: A cross-sectional study. METHODS: A convenience sampling method was used to collect a total of 644 nursing students from two medical schools in Guangzhou City. The participants were recruited through an online survey conducted from January to March 2023. The questionnaires consisted of a general information form, the Chinese version of the Academic Resilience Scale-30 (C-ARS-30), the 10-item Connor Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC-10), and the General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSES). Latent profile analysis was used to identify distinct categories of academic resilience among nursing students, and influencing factors were examined through ordinal logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: The academic resilience levels of nursing students can be divided into three potential categories: 'low academic resilience' (13.0%), 'moderate academic resilience' (70.0%), and 'high academic resilience' (17.0%). Level of grade, GPA, self-reported physical health level, resilience and self-efficacy were significantly influenced the different categories of academic resilience of nursing students (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The majority of undergraduate nursing students were placed in the moderate academic resilience group, however, educational institutions should pay special attention to nursing students demonstrating low levels. Regular assessments of academic resilience are recommended, and personalized interventions should be tailored to address specific academic resilience characteristics across different grades of nursing students. Strategies aimed at enhancing academic resilience among nursing students may include improvements in GPA performance, attention to physical health, and the reinforcement of resilience and self-efficacy.

AIM: To identify latent profiles of nurses' subjective well-being (SWB) and explore its association with social support and professional self-concept. DESIGN: This study used an online survey and cross-sectional latent profile analysis design. METHODS: A total of 1009 nurses from 30 hospitals in Guangdong Province, China, were selected using convenience sampling. An online questionnaire survey comprising the following scales was distributed: Index of Well-Being, Nurses' Professional Self-concept Questionnaire and Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support. Nurses' SWB was examined and categorized into profiles using nine Index of Well-being items as explicit variables and ordinal logistic regression analysis was performed to explore factors related to the distinct categories. RESULTS: Nurses' SWB was divided into four latent profiles: extremely low, low, moderate and high. Regression analysis showed that social support and professional self-concept influenced SWB. There were statistically significant differences in age, title, working years, social support and professional self-concept among nurses in the different well-being categories. Ordered logistic regression analysis showed that social support and professional self-concept are associated with different SWB profiles.

The proteins were mainly derived from Protaetia brevitarsis larval extracts obtained using two empty intestine methods (traditional static method: TSM or salt immersion stress method: SISM) and extraction solvents (water: W or 50 % water-ethanol: W:E), and the proteins were used as objects to investigate the effect of emptying intestine methods on hypolipidemic peptides. The results revealed that the F-2 fractions of protein hydrolysate had stronger in vitro hypolipidemic activity, with the peptides obtained by SISM possessing a stronger cholesterol micelle solubility inhibition rate, especially in SISM-W:E-P. Moreover, a total of 106 peptides were tentatively identified, among which SISM identified more peptides with an amino acid number < 8. Meanwhile, five novel peptides (YPPFH, YPGFGK, KYPF, SPLPGPR and VPPP) exhibited good hypolipidemic activity in vitro and in vivo, among which YPPFH, VPPP and KYPF had strong inhibitory activities on pancreatic lipase (PL) and cholesteryl esterase (CE), and KYPF, SPLPGPR and VPPP could significantly reduce the TG content in Caenorhabditis elegans. Thus, P. brevitarsis can be developed as a naturally derived hypolipidemic component for the development and application in functional foods.

BACKGROUND: Recently developments in the field of positive psychology have provided new perspectives for understanding the connection between individual variation in Quality of life (QoL) and positive aspects of human potential, strengths, and resources, commanding increasing attention. This study aimed to examine self-reported quality of life (QoL) profiles and the association of QoL profiles with positive psychosocial characteristics in Chinese older adults. METHODS: A convenient sample of 354 older adults in nursing homes was recruited from Guangdong Province, China, between November 2020 and January 2021. Latent Profile Analysis (LPA) was conducted to explore QoL profiles using the four WHOQOL-BREF domains as input variables. Multinomial logistic regression was performed to explore the association between latent profiles and predictors. RESULTS: LPA identified three latent QoL profiles: "low QoL with poor psychological health" (18.1%), "moderate QoL" (46.0%) and "high QoL" (35.9%). Frequency of weekly activity, optimism, gratitude, and social support were associated with the increased likelihood of belonging to the moderate-to-high QoL classes. Furthermore, Class 2 (moderate QoL group, reference) was compared with Class3 (high QoL group), higher frequency of weekly physical activity and spending more time on physical activity exhibited higher odds of belonging to high QoL class. CONCLUSION: Using the domains of the WHOQOL-BREF scale, the QoL profiles Chinese older adults can be identified. We found that psychosocial variables and demographic characteristic, including lower level of optimism and gratitude, lack of social support, low frequency of physical activity, and shorter activity duration time, heighten the risk for lower levels of QoL. Identifying classification may help focus on those at elevated risk for poor QoL and for developing tailored QoL improvement programs.

Introduction: Well-being is a multi-domain concept that involves measuring physical, psychological, social, and spiritual domains. However, there are currently few multi-domain and comprehensive well-being instruments available. In addition, measures that do exist customarily contain a vast number of items that may lead to boredom or fatigue in participants. The Well-being Numerical Rating Scales (WB-NRSs) offer a concise, multi-domain well-being scale. This study aimed to perform the translation, adaptation, and validation of the Chinese version of WB-NRSs (WBNRSs-CV). Methods: A total of 639 clinical participants and 542 community participants completed the WB-NRSs-CV, the Single-item Self-report Subjective Well-being Scale (SISRSWBS), the World Health Organization Five-item Well-Being Index (WHO-5), the 10-item Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10), and the Kessler Psychological Distress Scale (K10). Results: High internal consistency and test-retest reliability were obtained for both samples. Additionally, WB-NRSs-CV was positively associated with SISRSWBS and WHO-5 and negatively associated with PSS-10 and K10. In the item response theory analysis, the model fit was adequate with the discrimination parameters ranging from 2.73 to 3.56. The diffculty parameters ranged from -3.40 to 1.71 and were evenly spaced along the trait, attesting to the appropriateness of the response categories. The invariance tests demonstrated that there was no difference in WB-NRSs-CV across groups by gender or age. Discussion: The WB-NRSs-CV was translated appropriately and cross-culturally adapted in China. It can be used as a rapid and relevant instrument to assess well-being in both clinical and non-clinical settings, with its utility for well-being measurement and management among the Chinese people.

PURPOSE: Children with acute leukemia have suffered from a considerable symptom burden during chemotherapy. However, few studies have focused on exploring the mechanisms among symptoms in children with acute leukemia. Our study aims to explore core symptoms and describe the interrelationships among symptoms in children with acute leukemia during chemotherapy. METHODS: From January 2021 to March 2023, 469 children with acute leukemia were recruited from 20 Chinese cities. The Memorial Symptom Assessment Scale 10-18 (MSAS 10-18) was used to evaluate the prevalence and severity of symptoms during chemotherapy. A network analysis was performed by the R software based on 31 symptoms. Centrality indices and density were used to explore core symptoms and describe interrelationships among symptoms in the network during chemotherapy. RESULTS: Worrying and feeling irritable were the central symptoms across the three centrality indices, including strength, closeness, and betweenness. Lack of energy was the most prevalent symptom; however, it was less central than other symptoms. The density of the "induction and remission" network significantly differed from other cycles' counterparts (p < 0.001). Global strength was greater in the " ≥ 8 years group " network than the " < 8 years group " network (p = 0.023). CONCLUSION: Network analysis provides a novel approach to identifying the core symptoms and understanding the interrelationships among symptoms. Our study indicates the need to assess emotional symptoms in children with acute leukemia during chemotherapy, especially during the induction and remission phases, as well as in older children. Future research is imperative to construct trajectories of dynamic symptom networks and centrality indices in longitudinal data to investigate the causal relationships among symptoms.

Totally implantable venous access ports (TIVAP) are widely utilized in chemotherapy, parenteral nutrition, and long-lasting intravenous therapy in cancer patients. However, port exposure occurs due to skin damage around the port. Thus, managing port exposure is of great importance; however, it is full of challenges. We reported two cases of port exposure due to TIVAP. In these two patients, the catheters were inserted into the internal jugular or axillary vein under local anesthesia and ultrasound guidance and were connected to the port implanted on the ipsilateral chest through the subcutaneous tunnel. Chemotherapy and targeted drug therapy were administered using these ports. During the treatment intermission, the ports of two patients were partially exposed. Hence, external fixation of the port exposure approach was utilized to successfully retain the TIVAP through collaborative discussion. These findings provide good references for the prevention and management of postoperative port-exposure complications associated with TIVAP in patients with cancer.

Background: Previous studies have examined symptom clusters in children with acute leukemia, yet a knowledge gap persists regarding central symptom clusters and their influencing factors. By identifying these central clusters and associated factors, healthcare providers can enhance their understanding and effective management of symptoms. Our study seeks to address this gap by identifying symptom clusters, exploring central clusters, and investigating the demographic and health-related factors associated with these clusters in children with acute leukemia undergoing chemotherapy. Methods: A total of 586 children with acute leukemia from January 2021 to April 2023 were recruited from China. They were investigated using Memorial Symptom Assessment Scale 10-18 during chemotherapy. The principal component analysis was used to identify the symptom clusters. An association network was conducted to describe the relationships among symptoms and clusters. A multiple linear model was used to investigate the associated factors for the severity of overall symptoms and each symptom cluster. Results: Five clusters were identified, including oral and skin cluster, somatic cluster, self-image disorder cluster, gastrointestinal cluster and psychological cluster. Gastrointestinal cluster was the most central symptom cluster. Age, sex, clinical classification, number of having chemotherapy and education degree and marital status of the primary caregiver are associated with the severity of these five symptom clusters. Conclusion: Our study highlights the importance of evaluating symptom clusters in children with acute leukemia during chemotherapy. Specifically, addressing gastrointestinal symptoms is crucial for effective symptom management and overall care.

Background: Total ear avulsion is one of the most serious auricular traumas. Its surgical procedure is complicated and involves high technical difficulty. The auricular blood vessels mostly contain capillaries, and capillary anastomosis reconstruction is difficult. Right ear vascular anastomosis and auricle replantation under microscope are very few cases of successful replantation of total ear avulsion. The lack of blood supply in the amputated ear leads to postoperative blood supply disturbance. At present, there are no reports on the application of hyperbaric oxygen therapy following the replantation of severed ears. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy was used to promote the recovery of vascular microcirculation, reduce complications and improve the survival rate of postoperative ear transplantation. Case Description: We present a rare case of total ear avulsion in a 53-year-old Chinese man. The patient complained of cutting injury of the right auricle for more than 1 hour. The patient had a history of hypertension for 4 years, and his blood pressure was well controlled by regular administration of valsartan. This paper reports on the treatment experience in a case of microscope-assisted auricular replantation, targeted postoperative treatment, early intervention with hyperbaric oxygen therapy, and individualized nursing care. After 16 days of careful treatment, the patient's avulsion ear survived and he was discharged from the hospital. After 6 months of continuous follow-up, the auricular shape and hearing of the patient reached the ideal standard. Conclusions: Precise medical and nursing cooperation coupled with meticulous management of the patient throughout the entire process are key factors for the survival of the severed ear. The combined application of microscopic techniques and hyperbaric oxygen therapy improves blood circulation to the anastomosed vessels, accelerates the healing of the replanted ear, and shortens the length of hospital stay. Early hyperbaric oxygen treatment can make postoperative wound heal quickly. Early intervention of hyperbaric oxygen therapy after ear avulsion is helpful to the recovery of patients with ear avulsion. However, the initiation time and duration of intervention need to be further optimized and more evidence is needed to support it.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effects of multidisciplinary collaborative empowerment education on psychological distress and quality of life (QoL) in patients with colorectal cancer undergoing chemotherapy. METHODS: A quasi-experimental study was conducted using repeated measures at pre- and post-intervention in the fourth chemotherapy cycle. Sixty patients with colorectal cancer aged 36-84 years were allocated to the intervention and control groups. The intervention group received multidisciplinary empowerment education, while the control group received routine health education. Psychological distress involving depression and anxiety symptoms was assessed using The Kessler Psychological Distress Scale (K10) and QoL was measured using The European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire (EORTCQLQ-C30). Repeated-measures analysis of variance was used to examine intervention effects. Statistical analyses were performed using the SPSS software (version 26.0). RESULTS: Psychological distress was considerably lower and QoL was considerably better in patients following multidisciplinary empowerment education in the intervention group than those in the control group. In addition, psychological distress significantly decreased and QoL improved in the intervention group compared to baseline. CONCLUSION: Multidisciplinary collaborative empowerment education was effective in improving the psychological distress and QoL among patients with colorectal cancer undergoing chemotherapy. These findings suggest that the establishment of multidisciplinary collaborative empowerment education might be considered as an innovative means of clinical patient education during combination chemotherapy to improve health outcomes in patients with colorectal cancer. However, our results should be interpreted with caution because of the small sample size. Further validation in a larger sample or randomized controlled design is necessary in the future.

Intestinal contents affect the characterization of edible insect bioactive compounds. Two empty intestine methods, namely, traditional static method (TSM) or salt immersion stress method (SISM), associated with extraction solvents water (W), 50 % water-ethanol (W:E) or 100 % ethanol (E), were used to obtain six Protaetia brevitarsis larval extracts. The total flavonoid content (TFC) in the W:E extracts was significantly higher than that in the W and E extracts, with TSM-W:E the highest (p < 0.05). The relative contents of 132 bioactive compounds, especially p-hydroxyphenylacetic acid, citric acid, and dehydroepiandrosterone, were different between TSM-W and SISM-W. TSM-W:E had significantly higher 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydroxy· (DPPH) scavenging and pancreatic lipase (PL) inhibitory activity than SISM-W:E (p < 0.05). DPPH scavenging and PL inhibitory activities were highly correlated with TFC and carbohydrates, respectively. Thus, bioactive compounds in P. brevitarsis extracts can be obtained selectively using pretreatment methods, which might be beneficial for high-value utilization of P. brevitarsis.

OBJECTIVES: To examine the level of subjective well-being (SWB) and the mediating roles of gratitude and social support in the relationship between optimism and SWB amongst older Chinese people in nursing homes. METHODS: A total of 354 older adults in Chinese nursing homes completed the World Health Organization's well-being index, Life Orientation Test-Revised, Gratitude Questionnaire-Six-Item Form, and Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support. Structural equation modeling was used to evaluate the relationships between optimism, gratitude, social support and SWB. RESULTS: The mean SWB score of the older people was (63.14 ±15.31), with 21.0% of subjects reporting low SWB. Gratitude and social support in serial partially mediated the relationship of optimism with SWB (total indirect effect: Standardized ß = 0.157, 95% CI [0.109,0.216], p<0.001). CONCLUSION: These findings provide good evidence for the inter-relationship mechanism amongst the protective factors of SWB, suggesting the need to prioritize positive psychological nursing interventions to promote SWB in older people in residential care.

BACKGROUND: The Scarabaeidae insect Protaetia brevitarsis (PB) has recently gained increasing research interest as a resource insect because its larvae can effectively convert decaying organic matter to plant growth-promoting frass with a high humic acid content and produce healthy, nutritional insect protein sources. Lignocellulose is the main component of PB larvae (PBL) feed, but PB genome annotation shows that PBL carbohydrate-active enzymes are not able to complete the lignocellulose degradation process. Thus, the mechanism by which PBL efficiently degrade lignocellulose is worthy of further study. RESULTS: Herein, we used combined host genomic and gut metagenomic datasets to investigate the lignocellulose degradation activity of PBL, and a comprehensive reference catalog of gut microbial genes and host gut transcriptomic genes was first established. We characterized a gene repertoire comprising highly abundant and diversified lignocellulose-degrading enzymes and demonstrated that there was unique teamwork between PBL and their gut bacterial microbiota for efficient lignocellulose degradation. PBL selectively enriched lignocellulose-degrading microbial species, mainly from Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes, which are capable of producing a broad array of cellulases and hemicellulases, thus playing a major role in lignocellulosic biomass degradation. In addition, most of the lignocellulose degradation-related module sequences in the PBL microbiome were novel. PBL provide organic functional complementarity for lignocellulose degradation via their evolved strong mouthparts, alkaline midgut, and mild stable hindgut microenvironment to facilitate lignocellulosic biomass grinding, dissolving, and symbiotic microbial fermentation, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: This work shows that PBL are a promising model to study lignocellulose degradation, which can provide highly abundant novel enzymes and relevant lignocellulose-degrading bacterial strains for biotechnological biomass conversion industries. The unique teamwork between PBL and their gut symbiotic bacterial microbiota for efficient lignocellulose degradation will expand the knowledge of holobionts and open a new beginning in the theory of holobionts. Background: Hemorrhagic transformation is one of the most serious complications in intravenous thrombolysis. Studies show that the existence of more than 10 cerebral microbleeds is strongly associated with hemorrhagic transformation. The current study attempts to develop and validate a clinical prediction model of more than 10 cerebral microbleeds. Methods: We reviewed the computed tomography markers of cerebral small vessel diseases and the basic clinical information of acute ischemic stroke patients who were investigated using susceptibility weighted imaging from 2018 to 2021. A clinical prediction model of more than 10 cerebral microbleeds was established. Discrimination, calibration, and the net benefit of the model were assessed. Finally, a validation was conducted to evaluate the accuracy and stability of the model. Results: The multivariate logistic regression model showed hypertension, and some computed tomography markers (leukoaraiosis, lacunar infarctions, brain atrophy) were independent risk factors of more than 10 cerebral microbleeds. These risk factors were used for establishing the clinical prediction model. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) was 0.894 (95% CI: 0.870-0.919); Hosmer-Lemeshow chi-squared test yielded χ2 = 3.946 (P = 0.862). The clinical decision cure of the model was higher than the two extreme lines. The simplified score of the model ranged from 0 to 12. The model in the internal and external validation cohort also had good discrimination (AUC 0.902, 95% CI: 0.868-0.937; AUC 0.914, 95% CI: 0.882-0.945) and calibration (P = 0.157, 0.247), and patients gained a net benefit from the model. Conclusions: We developed and validated a simple scoring tool for acute ischemic stroke patients with more than 10 cerebral microbleeds; this tool may be beneficial for paradigm decision regarding intravenous recombinant tissue plasminogen activator therapy of acute ischemic stroke.

The white-spotted flower chafer (WSFC), Protaetia brevitarsis Lewis, is native to East Asia. Although their larvae are considered a potential resource insect for degrading plant residues, producing protein fodder, and processing to traditional medicine, adult WSFCs inflict damage to dozens of fruit and economic crops. The control of the WSFC still relies heavily on pesticides and the inefficient manual extraction of adults. Here, we report the identification and evaluation of the aggregation pheromone of WSFCs. From the headspace volatiles emitted from WSFC adults, anisole, 4-methylanisole, 2-heptanone and 2-nonanone were identified as WSFC-specific components. However, only anisole and 4-methylanisole elicited positive dose-response relationship in electroantennography tests, and only 4-methylanisole significantly attracted WSFCs of both sexes in olfactometer bioassays and field experiments. These results concluded that 4-methylanisole is the aggregation pheromone of WSFCs. Furthermore, we developed polyethylene vials as long-term dispensers of 4-methylanisole to attract and kill WSFCs. The polyethylene vial lures could effectively attracted WSFCs for more than four weeks. Pheromone-based lures can be developed as an environmentally friendly protocol for monitoring and controlling WSFC adults.

Holotrichia oblita (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) and some other scarab beetles are the main soil-dwelling pests in China. Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) and Beauveria bassiana (Bb) are entomopathogens that have been used as biocontrol agents of various pests. However, scarab larvae especially H. oblita exhibited strong adaptability to these pathogens. Compared to other scarabs, H. oblita could form a specific soil egg case (SEC) structure surrounding its eggs, and young larvae complete the initial development process inside this structure. In this study, we investigated the role of SEC structure and microorganisms from SEC and egg surface in pathogen adaptability. 16S rRNA gene analysis revealed low bacterial richness and high community unevenness in egg surface, with Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes and Fusobacteria dominating. In terms of OTUs composition analysis, the data show that the egg surface contains a large number of unique bacteria, indicating that the egg bacterial community may be derived from maternal transmission. Furthermore, we found that all culturable bacteria isolated from egg surface possessed antimicrobial activity against both Bt and Bb. The Pseudomonas bacteria with a significantly higher abundance in egg surface showed strong Bt- and Bb antagonistic ability. In conclusion, this study demonstrated a unique and antimicrobial bacterial community of H. oblita egg surface, which may contribute to its adaptability. Furthermore, the specific SEC structure surrounding the H. oblita eggs will provide a stable microenvironment for the eggs and egg surface bacteria, which probably provides more advantages for H. oblita adaptation ability.

The edible mushroom industry produces massive amounts of spent mushroom substrate (SMS). Thus, there is an urgent need for high-value utilization technology to process the SMS, especially SMSs originating from woodchips. Protaetia brevitarsis larvae (PBL) can feed on various types of organic matter and can produce organic fertilizer and insect protein. In this study, we investigated the potential of PBL to utilize and convert SMSs from Auricularia auricula (SMS-AA) and Lentinula edodes (SMS-LE) cultivation. The results showed that the PBL were able to feed on SMS-AA and SMS-LE and form nutrient-enriched organic fertilizer with a low phytotoxicity and high humic acid content. Further analysis of the organic carbon dynamics suggested that PBL can efficiently digest and utilize lignin. This study demonstrates a new strategy for the utilization of SMSs originating from woodchips, and provides a new model for further investigations on the mechanism of lignin decomposition.
