RESUMO

Due to its low interfacial electron migration ability and highly hydrophilic, Fe-MCM-41 (FeM) had poor activity and stability during catalytic ozonation. To this end, the secondary metal Zn and Si-F group were introduced into the framework of FeM to create surface potential difference and hydrophobic sites. Comparative characterizations showed that there existed rich acid sites with great potential difference on F-Fe-Zn-MCM-41 (FFeZnM). Additionally, because of the existence of hydrophobic and electron-withdrawing Si-F unit, the electron migration ability, hydrophobicity and acidity of FFeZnM were enhanced. The greater O3 mass transfer was induced by Si-F group and O3 was directly activated at Fe and Zn Lewis acid sites into •OH, •O2- and 1O2. With •OH acting as main species, FFeZnM/O3 achieved the superior IBP removal (93.4%, 30 min) and TOC removal (46.6%, 120 min) over those of sole O3 and F-FeM/O3 processes, respectively. HCO3-, Cl-, NO3- and SO42- hindered IBP degradation by FFeZnM/O3, but high concentration humic acid (HA) exhibited promotion by forming HA-IBP complex. IBP degradation by FFeZnM/O3 was enhanced with tap water, river water, and effluent from the secondary sedimentation tank of the sewage plant acting as medium. This study proposed an innovative approach to catalyst design for catalytic ozonation.

RESUMO

The accumulation, mobilization, and distribution of toxic metal(loid)s in rice are key factors that affect food security and determine bio-utilization patterns. In this study, five soil amendments with different components were used in paddy fields to study the key factors: organic amendments: (1) polyaspartic acid (OA1) and (2) organic fertilizer (OA2); inorganic amendments: (3) kaolinite (IA1) and (4) magnesium slag (IA2); and organic-inorganic composite amendments: (5) modified biochar/quicklime (OIA). Although the Cd and As exhibited opposite chemical dissolution behaviors, IA1/OIA, can simultaneously reduce their accumulation and transfer coefficients in rice tissues, while other amendments only work for one of them. The in situ distribution in grains showed that IA1/OIA changed the original Cd distribution in the lemma and palea, whereas all amendments reduced Cd accumulation in the germ. In contrast, OA1/IA2 amendments led to more As accumulation in the rice husks and bran than in the endosperm center, and the germ had higher As signals. Because of their similar transport pathways and interactions, the concentrations of Cd and As in the grains were correlated with a variety of mineral elements (Fe, Mo, Zn, etc.). Changes in the Cd/As concentration and distribution in rice were achieved through the improvement of soil properties and plant growth behavior through amendments. The application of OIA resulted in the highest immobilization indices, at 82.17 % and 35.34 % for Cd and As, respectively. The Cd/As concentrations in the rice grains were highly positively correlated with extractable-Cd/As in the soil (Cd: R2 = 0.95, As: R2 = 0.93). These findings reveal the migration and distribution mechanisms of Cd and As in the soil-rice system, and thus provide fundamental information for minimizing food safety risk.

RESUMO

Metal pollution in soil has become one of the most serious environmental problems in China. Biochar is one of the most widely used remediation agents for soil metal pollution. However, the literature does not provide a consistent picture of the performance of biochar on the immobilization of anionic metal(loid)s, especially arsenic, in soil. To obtain a baseline understanding on the interactions of metals and biochar, 597 data records on four metal(loid)s (As, Cr, Sb and V) were collected from 70 publications for this meta-analysis, and the results are highlighted below. Biochar has a significant immobilization effect on anionic metal(loid)s in soil and reduces the bioavailability of these metals to plants. Subgroup analysis found that biochar could decrease the potential mobility of Cr, Sb and V, but the immobilization effect on As was not always consistent. Meanwhile, biochar pH and soil pH are the most key factors affecting the immobilization effect. To summarize, biochar can effectively immobilize Cr, Sb and V in soil, but more attention should be given to As immobilization in future applications. By regulating the properties of biochar and appropriate modification, anionic metal(loid)s in soil can be immobilized more effectively. Hence, both of the soil quality and crop quality can be improved.

RESUMO

Fe-MCM-41 had been widely used as ozonation catalyst, however, the existence of large amount of hydrophilic silanol hindered its interfacial reaction with O3 and pollutants. To solve this problem, F-Fe-MCM-41 was synthesized by co-doping F and Fe into the framework of MCM-41 to replace silanol with Si-F groups through a one-step hydrothermal method. F introduced hydrophobic sites which contributed to more ibuprofen (IBP) chemisorption on the surface of F-Fe-MCM-41. Moreover, doping F also enhanced the acidity, which accelerated O3 decomposition into •OH. F-Fe-MCM-41/O3 exhibited notably activity with 96.6% IBP removal efficiency within 120 min, while only 78.5% and 80.9% in O3 alone and Fe-MCM-41/O3, respectively. Surface Lewis acid sites and metal hydroxyl groups were considered as important factors for O3 activation and •OH generation. F-Fe-MCM-41 exhibited excellent catalytic performance under acidic and alkaline conditions. Comparative experiments revealed that F doping improved the interfacial reaction, especially the interfacial electron transfer, which resulted in the high catalytic activity of F-Fe-MCM-41. F-Fe-MCM-41 possessed good stability and reusability, with only 5.7% decline for IBP removal in five successive cycles. Furthermore, the possible degradation path of IBP was proposed according to DFT calculation and GC-MS analysis.

RESUMO

Hyperglycemia, a diagnostic characteristic of diabetes mellitus, is detrimental to pancreatic ß cells. Delphinidin, a member of the anthocyanin family, inhibits glucose absorption, increases glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) secretion, and improves insulin secretion in diabetes. However, whether delphinidin plays a protective role in pancreatic ß-cell mass and function is not clear. In this study, delphinidin was found to decrease the high-glucose-induced apoptosis of RIN-m5F pancreatic ß cells. In addition, delphinidin induced autophagy in RIN-m5F cells under the normal and high-glucose conditions, while 3-methyladenine (3-MA) inhibition of autophagy significantly diminished the protective role of delphinidin against high-glucose-induced apoptosis of pancreatic ß cells. Delphinidin also decreased the level of cleaved caspase 3 and increased the phosphorylation level of AMP-activated protein kinase α (AMPKα) Thr172. Compound C, an AMPK inhibitor, was found to decrease the ratio of LC3-II/LC3-I, and the apoptotic rate of high-glucose-injured cells was increased after treatment with delphinidin, indicating that delphinidin attenuated the negative effects of high-glucose stress to cells. In conclusion, our data demonstrate that delphinidin protects pancreatic ß cells against high-glucose-induced injury by autophagy regulation via the AMPK signaling pathway. These findings might shed light on the underlying mechanisms of diabetes and help improve the prevention and therapy of this common disease.

RESUMO

Many cities in China have implemented urban water supply pipe network renovation projects; however, at the beginning of new pipeline replacements, customers often complain about water quality problems, such as red water, odour and other water quality problems. To overcome these frequent water quality problems, this study selected a commonly used ductile cast iron (DCI) pipe, stainless steel (SS) pipe and high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipe for laboratory simulations of the water quality regularity of new pipes, the variations in pipe inner walls, and the presence of microbial communities. Based on the research results, combined with actual water sample analysis, the stabilisation time of the interaction between the tubings inner walls and bulk water was determined, to allow pipeline cleaning and water quality maintenance. The results showed that the water quality change in the DCI was the most significant, while the SS and the HDPE pipes showed consistent changes with severe initial deterioration, then later stabilisation to meet the required standard. The DCI inner wall changed from a loose porous particle shape to a relatively dense and irregular three-dimensional shape, with the constituent elements mainly being O and Ca. The SS inner wall had a uniform structure in the early stage, but are obvious spherical balls of different sizes formed later, with the elemental composition here mainly being C and O. The HDPE inner wall was smooth and had small perforations in the early stage, while the perforation in the middle and late stages increased to become rough and scale-like at a much later stage. The proportion of Proteobacteria in effluents (72.82% to 86.87%) was significantly increased compared with the influent (48.45%), while the proportion of Proteobacteria (86.87%) in the DCI was significantly higher than in the SS (74.28%) and HDPE pipes (81.68%). Moreover, compared with the influent (23.33%), the Bacteroidetes (2.79% to 3.32%) levels in the effluents were significantly reduced, indicating that the pipe material affects the microbial abundance in water.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Identifying typical odor-causing compounds is essential for odor problem control in drinking water. In this study, aiming at a major water source reservoir in hot and humid areas in southern China, which encountered seasonable odor problems in recent years, an integrated approach including comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography with time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC × GC-TOFMS), flavor profile analysis (FPA) and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) was adopted to investigate the odor occurrence. RESULTS: The results indicated that earthy-musty odor is blamed to the seasonable odor problems, and it is consistent with the complaints results from consumers. Fifty-four typical odor compounds were investigated in the reservoir and twelve were detected, of which, 2-methylisoborneol (2-MIB) was significantly increased during the odor event. Pseudanabaena sp. is the dominant species in the reservoir, which can be further represented by the number of mic gene with qPCR method (R 2 = 0.746, P < 0.001). Oxygen consumption (CODMn) and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) have great influence on growth of Pseudanabaena sp., and the release of 2-MIB from the Pseudanabaena sp. cells is affected by temperature and light. CONCLUSION: Our findings demonstrated that 2-MIB is the odor-caused substance in the reservoir and Pseudanabaena sp. is the main 2-MIB producer, which was confirmed as a benthic filamentous algae. Due to CODMn and DOC have great influence on Pseudanabaena sp. growth, further measures to reduce the CODMn and DOC input should be performed. We also demonstrated that the 2-MIB release is affected by temperature and light. The risk of sudden increase of 2-MIB will be reduced by raising the depth of water in the reservoir. Our study will improve the understanding of T&O problems in this city, as well as in other hot and humid area.

RESUMO

The study on the effects of nitrogen fertilization (0-450 kg x hm(-2)) and square loss (0-12 x plant(-1)) on cotton aphid population, cotton leafhopper population and cotton yield showed that there were no significant differences in cotton aphid population, cotton leafhopper population, and numbers of effective bolls between transgenic Bt cotton and non-transgenic cotton. Cotton aphid populations on the two cottons were significantly influenced by nitrogen fertilization and by the interaction of nitrogen fertilization and square loss, while leafhopper populations were not significantly influenced by them. Nitrogen fertilization at squaring and flowering stage was one of important factors affecting cotton yield. There was a positive correlation between the application rate of nitrogen fertilizer and cotton yield, but a negative correlation between the number of lost square per plant and the yield of the two cottons.
