RESUMO

To study the effect of different high-voltage electric field polarisation treatment process parameters on the viability of seeds of dried chili peppers. In this study, a high-voltage electrostatic polarisation treatment system was constructed to carry out experiments on the effects of different high-voltage electric field polarisation treatment process parameters on the viability of dried chili seeds. Conduct one-way tests to determine the preferred polarisation method and the preferred interval for output voltage and polarisation time. Two-factor, five-level central combination test with output voltage and polarization time as test factors and seed conductivity as a response indicator. Determining the better combination of parameters for output voltage and polarization time; Conducting seed germination trials to validate the effectiveness of the polarisation process. The results of the one-way test showed that: Negative-voltage polarisation was more effective than positive-voltage polarisation and alternating positive-negative-voltage polarisation in promoting seed vigor, with a better output voltage in the range of 10-14 kV, and a better polarisation time in the range of 20-40 s; The results of orthogonal tests showed that: Under the condition of negative voltage polarisation treatment, the output voltage of 12.08 kV and polarisation time of 30.32 s was the better parameter combination, at which the seed conductivity was minimum 159.87 uS/(cm g). Analyzing the function of cell membrane selective semi-permeability by seed conductivity change and revealing the mechanism of seed viability enhancement by high voltage electric field polarisation treatment; In the seed germination test, compared with the control group, seed germination potential increased by 9.09%, germination rate increased by 20.45%, germination index increased by 3.49, and vigor index increased by 41.66 under high-voltage electrostatic polarisation treatment, and all vigor indexes were significantly improved. The results of this study can provide a basis for the selection of processes and parameters for subsequent high-voltage electric field polarisation treatment of crop seeds.

OBJECTIVE: Face memory impairment significantly affects social interactions and daily functioning in individuals with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). While deficits in recognizing familiar faces among individuals with MCI have been reported, their ability to learn and recognize unfamiliar faces remains unclear. This study examined the behavioral performance and event-related potentials (ERPs) of unfamiliar face memorization and recognition in MCI. METHODS: Fifteen individuals with MCI and 15 healthy controls learned and recognized 90 unfamiliar neutral faces. Their performance accuracy and cortical ERPs were compared between the two groups across the learning and recognition phases. RESULTS: Individuals with MCI had lower accuracy in identifying newly learned faces than healthy controls. Moreover, individuals with MCI had reduced occipitotemporal N170 and central vertex positive potential responses during both the learning and recognition phases, suggesting impaired initial face processing and attentional resources allocation. Also, individuals with MCI had reduced central N200 and frontal P300 responses during the recognition phase, suggesting impaired later-stage face recognition and attention engagement. CONCLUSION: These findings provide neurobehavioral evidence for impaired learning and recognition of unfamiliar faces in individuals with MCI. SIGNIFICANCE: Individuals with MCI may have face memory deficits in both early-stage face processing and later-stage recognition .

Objective: To evaluate the prevalence and associated factors of undernutrition among children with congenital heart disease (CHD) who have not undergone surgeries in China. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 734 CHD children along with their parents. The outcome of interest was undernutrition, including underweight, wasting, and stunting, defined as Z-scores (i.e., weight-for-age, weight-for-height, and height-for-age) ≤-2, according to the World Health Organization (WHO) growth standard. Exposures of interest, containing demographics, obstetric factors, maternal dietary factors, parents' life behaviors and habits, birth-related factors, cardiac-related factors, and preoperative factors, were analyzed using a multivariate logistic regression model to test their associations with undernutrition in CHD children. Results: Overall, 36.1%, 29.7%, and 21.3% of cases were underweight, wasted, and stunted, respectively. Multivariate logistic regression indicated that underweight was associated with demographic factors (including parents' occupational status, family income, and maternal body mass index pre-pregnancy), low birth weight (OR = 4.60, 2.76-7.70), pulmonary hypertension (OR = 4.46, 3.09-6.43), and pneumonia (OR = 1.88, 1.28-2.76). Artificially-fed children were 2.34 (1.36-4.01) times more likely to be underweight. Occupied mothers (OR = 0.62, 0.44-0.88) and fathers (OR = 0.49, 0.26-0.92) served as protective factors, while mothers having gestational complications (OR = 1.56, 1.11-2.18) and exposed to noisy environment (OR = 1.64, 1.11-2.42) during this pregnancy, and pulmonary hypertension (OR = 3.21, 2.30-4.49) increased the chance of wasting in offspring. The odds of being stunted were greater in families with >2 children (OR = 1.88, 1.13-3.14), placental abruption during this pregnancy (OR = 25.15, 2.55-247.89), preterm births (OR = 1.84, 1.02-3.31), low birth weight (OR = 3.78, 2.16-6.62), pulmonary hypertension (OR = 2.35, 1.56-3.53) and pneumonia (OR = 1.93, 1.28-2.90). In subgroup analyses, the associations differed between patients with different feeding patterns (breastfeeding vs. non-breastfeeding), CHD classifications (cyanotic vs. acyanotic), and prematurity (preterm vs. non-preterm). Conclusion: Undernutrition is common in preoperative CHD children. Familial demographics, maternal factors (including having gestational complications and exposure to noisy environment during pregnancy), and patient-related factors (encompassing preterm births, low birth weight, pulmonary hypertension, pneumonia, and feeding pattern) were found to contribute to undernutrition in CHD cases. However, associated factors among the three subgroups of distinct feeding patterns, CHD categorization, and prematurity exhibited varied outcomes, suggesting the necessity for targeted interventions.

Parkinson's disease (PD) exhibits significant clinical heterogeneity, presenting challenges in the identification of reliable electroencephalogram (EEG) biomarkers. Machine learning techniques have been integrated with resting-state EEG for PD diagnosis, but their practicality is constrained by the interpretable features and the stochastic nature of resting-state EEG. The present study proposes a novel and interpretable deep learning model, graph signal processing-graph convolutional networks (GSP-GCNs), using event-related EEG data obtained from a specific task involving vocal pitch regulation for PD diagnosis. By incorporating both local and global information from single-hop and multi-hop networks, our proposed GSP-GCNs models achieved an averaged classification accuracy of 90.2%, exhibiting a significant improvement of 9.5% over other deep learning models. Moreover, the interpretability analysis revealed discriminative distributions of large-scale EEG networks and topographic map of microstate MS5 learned by our models, primarily located in the left ventral premotor cortex, superior temporal gyrus, and Broca's area that are implicated in PD-related speech disorders, reflecting our GSP-GCN models' ability to provide interpretable insights identifying distinctive EEG biomarkers from large-scale networks. These findings demonstrate the potential of interpretable deep learning models coupled with voice-related EEG signals for distinguishing PD patients from healthy controls with accuracy and elucidating the underlying neurobiological mechanisms.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this review was to investigate the efficacy of rhythmically cued exercise interventions on motor function, cognition, and mental state in patients with Parkinson disease. METHODS: PubMed, Cochrane Database, Web of Science, Embase, and CINAHL were searched June 15, 2023. Original studies investigating the efficacy of rhythmically cued exercise interventions on the functions of patients with Parkinson disease were included. The Cochrane risk-of-bias assessment tool was used to evaluate the risk of bias. The protocol was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42022371203). RESULTS: A total of 38 original studies involving 1486 participants were included. Rhythmically cued exercise interventions demonstrated superior effects on motor function compared to exercise therapy without rhythm (standardized mean difference [SMD] = -0.31). However, no significant improvements were observed in cognition and mental state. Overall, significant improvements were observed in motor examination (SMD = -0.61), Timed "Up & Go" Test (mean difference [MD] = -0.91), activities of daily living (SMD = -0.49), balance (SMD = 0.59), walking velocity (MD = 0.06), step length (MD = 2.65), and stride length (MD = 0.04) following rhythmically cued exercise interventions. No significant improvements were observed in freezing of gait and cadence. Assessment of publication bias showed no significant evidence of publication bias. Meta-regression analyses revealed a significant association between treatment duration and improvement in motor function. Furthermore, adverse events and dropout rates did not significantly differ between the 2 groups. CONCLUSION: Rhythmically cued exercise interventions are effective in improving motor function in the early to middle stages of Parkinson disease. More than 10 weeks of intervention yielded better results. However, these interventions do not have a significant impact on cognition and mental states. Importantly, rhythmically cued exercise interventions are safe and well tolerated. Large-scale trials are needed for further confirmation. IMPACT: This study contributes to the development of safe and reliable home rehabilitation programs, aiming to enhance the quality of life for patients with Parkinson disease.

BACKGROUND: Although current treatments are effective in dealing with congenital heart disease (CHD), non-cardiac comorbidities such as attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have received widespread attention. The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis is to assess the risk of ADHD associated with CHD. METHODS: The literature search was carried out systematically through eight different databases by the end of September 2022. Either a fixed- or a random-effects model was used to calculate the overall combined risk estimates. The heterogeneity of the studies was assessed by the Cochran Q test and the I2 statistic. Subgroup and sensitivity analyses were used to explore the potential sources of heterogeneity. RESULTS: Eleven studies were included in this study, which involved a total of 296 741 participants. Our study showed that the children with CHD were at a significantly increased risk of ADHD compared with the reference group (OR = 2.98, 95% CI: 2.18-4.08). The results were moderately heterogeneous. These factors including study design, geographic region and study quality were identified as the first three of the most relevant heterogeneity moderators by subgroup analyses. Sensitivity analysis yielded consistent results. There was no evidence of publication bias. CONCLUSIONS: The present study suggests that CHD children have a significantly higher risk of ADHD when compared with those without CHD. Early identification and intervention of ADHD is important to reduce its symptoms and adverse effects; therefore, clinicians should increase screening for ADHD in children with CHD and intervene promptly to reduce its effects whenever possible.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, syphilis is still the most common sexually transmitted disease worldwide. Pregnant women infected with syphilis can transmit it to the fetus in utero through mother-to-child transmission, which can directly lead to adverse pregnancy outcomes. The aim of this study was to investigate the associations between maternal syphilis infection and low birth weight and preterm birth in offspring. METHODS: Multinomial logistic regression model was used to analyze the associations between maternal syphilis infection and low birth weight and preterm birth, and to explore its stability through subgroup analysis. RESULTS: A total of 34,074 subjects were included in the study. After adjusting for potential confounders, maternal syphilis infection during pregnancy was associated with a 2.60-fold (95% CI 1.83-3.69) increased risk of low birth weight and a 1.91-fold (95% CI 1.35-2.69) increased risk of preterm birth. Subgroup analysis showed that the association was stable. CONCLUSION: We found that maternal syphilis infection during pregnancy was significantly associated with an increased risk of low birth weight and preterm birth. The implementation of reasonable syphilis screening and standardized treatment and follow-up of pregnant syphilis may have important practical significance in reducing the low birth weight and preterm birth rate in offspring.

Background: Speech impairment is a common symptom of Parkinson's disease (PD) that worsens with disease progression and affects communication and quality of life. Current pharmacological and surgical treatments for PD have inconsistent effects on speech impairment. The cerebellum is an essential part of sensorimotor network that regulates speech production and becomes dysfunctional in PD. Continuous theta-burst stimulation (cTBS) is a non-invasive brain stimulation technique that can modulate the cerebellum and its connections with other brain regions. Objective: To investigate whether cTBS over the right cerebellum coupled with speech-language therapy (SLT) can improve speech impairment in PD. Methods: In this randomized controlled trial (RCT), 40 patients with PD will be recruited and assigned to either an experimental group (EG) or a control group (CG). Both groups will receive 10 sessions of standard SLT. The EG will receive real cTBS over the right cerebellum, while the CG will receive sham stimulation. Blinded assessors will evaluate the treatment outcome at three time points: pre-intervention, post-intervention, and at a 12-week follow-up. The primary outcome measures are voice/speech quality and neurobehavioral parameters of auditory-vocal integration. The secondary outcome measures are cognitive function, quality of life, and functional connectivity determined by resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Significance: This trial will provide evidence for the efficacy and safety of cerebellar cTBS for the treatment of speech impairment in PD and shed light on the neural mechanism of this intervention. It will also have implications for other speech impairment attributed to cerebellar dysfunctions. Clinical trial registration: www.chictr.org.cn, identifier ChiCTR2100050543.

Existing evidence supported that congenital heart defect (CHD) was associated with a combination of environmental and genetic factors. Based on this, this study aimed at assessing the association of maternal folic acid supplementation (FAS), genetic variations in offspring methylenetetrahydrofolate dehydrogenase (MTHFD)1 and MTHFD2 genes, and their interactions with CHD and its subtypes. A hospital-based case-control study, including 620 cases with CHD and 620 healthy children, was conducted. This study showed that the absence of FAS was significantly associated with an increased risk of total CHD and its subtypes, such as atrial septal defect (ASD). FAS during the first and second trimesters was associated with a significantly higher risk of CHD in offspring compared to FAS during the three months prior to conception. The polymorphisms of offspring MTHFD1 and MTHFD2 genes at rs2236222, rs11849530, and rs828858 were significantly associated with the risk of CHD. Additionally, a significantly positive interaction between maternal FAS and genetic variation at rs828858 was observed for the risk of CHD. These findings suggested that pregnant women should carefully consider the timing of FAS, and individuals with higher genetic risk may benefit from targeted folic acid supplementation as a preventive measure against CHD.

Background: A growing body of literature has implicated the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) in the online monitoring of vocal production through auditory feedback. Specifically, disruption of or damage to the left DLPFC leads to exaggerated compensatory vocal responses to altered auditory feedback. It is conceivable that enhancing the cortical excitability of the left DLPFC may produce inhibitory influences on vocal feedback control by reducing vocal compensations. Methods: We used anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (a-tDCS) to modulate cortical excitability of the left DLPFC and examined its effects on auditory-motor integration for vocal pitch regulation. Seventeen healthy young adults vocalized vowel sounds while hearing their voice pseudo-randomly pitch-shifted by ±50 or ±200 cents, either during (online) or after (offline) receiving active or sham a-tDCS over the left DLPFC. Results: Active a-tDCS over the left DLPFC led to significantly smaller peak magnitudes and shorter peak times of vocal compensations for pitch perturbations than sham stimulation. In addition, this effect was consistent regardless of the timing of a-tDCS (online or offline stimulation) and the size and direction of the pitch perturbation. Conclusion: These findings provide the first causal evidence that a-tDCS over the left DLPFC can facilitate auditory-motor integration for compensatory adjustment to errors in vocal output. Reduced and accelerated vocal compensations caused by a-tDCS over left DLPFC support the hypothesis of a top-down neural mechanism that exerts inhibitory control over vocal motor behavior through auditory feedback.

The posterior superior temporal gyrus (pSTG) has been implicated in the integration of auditory feedback and motor system for controlling vocal production. However, the question as to whether and how the pSTG is causally involved in vocal feedback control is currently unclear. To this end, the present study selectively stimulated the left or right pSTG with continuous theta burst stimulation (c-TBS) in healthy participants, then used event-related potentials to investigate neurobehavioral changes in response to altered auditory feedback during vocal pitch regulation. The results showed that, compared to control (vertex) stimulation, c-TBS over the right pSTG led to smaller vocal compensations for pitch perturbations accompanied by smaller cortical N1 and larger P2 responses. Enhanced P2 responses received contributions from the right-lateralized temporal and parietal regions as well as the insula, and were significantly correlated with suppressed vocal compensations. Surprisingly, these effects were not found when comparing c-TBS over the left pSTG with control stimulation. Our findings provide evidence, for the first time, that supports a causal relationship between right, but not left, pSTG and auditory-motor integration for vocal pitch regulation. This lends support to a right-lateralized contribution of the pSTG in not only the bottom-up detection of vocal feedback errors but also the involvement of driving motor commands for error correction in a top-down manner.

We isolated a paraffin oil-degrading bacterial strain from a mixture of oil-based drill cutting and paddy soil, and characterized the strain using a polyphasic approach. The Gram-positive, aerobic, rod-shaped and non-spore-forming strain (SCAU 2101T) grew optimally at 50 °C, pH 7.0 and 0.5 % (w/v) NaCl. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequence indicated that the strain represented a distinct clade in the genus Chelativorans, neighbouring Chelativorans intermedius LMG 28482T (97.1 %). The genome size and DNA G+C content of the strain were 3 969 430 bp and 63.1 mol%, respectively. Whole genome based phylogenomic analyses showed that the average nucleotide identity and digital DNA-DNA hybridization values between strain SCAU 2101T and C. intermedius LMG 28482T were 77.5 and 21.2 %, respectively. The major respiratory quinone was Q-10. The dominant fatty acids were C19 : 0 cyclo ω8c (50.6 %), summed feature 8 (C18 : 1 ω7c and/or C18 : 1 ω6c; 22.5 %) and C18 : 0 (13.8 %). The polar lipids of the strain included phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylmonomethylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylcholine and diphosphatidylglycerol. Based on the results, strain SCAU 2101T was considered to represent a novel species in the genus Chelativorans, for which the name Chelativorans petroleitrophicus sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is SCAU 2101T (= CCTCC AB 2021125T=KCTC 92067T).

Current models of speech motor control propose a role for the left inferior frontal gyrus (IFG) in feedforward control of speech production. There is evidence, however, that has implicated the functional relevance of the left IFG for the neuromotor processing of vocal feedback errors. The present event-related potential (ERP) study examined whether the left IFG is causally linked to auditory feedback control of vocal production with high-definition transcranial alternating current stimulation (HD-tACS). After receiving active or sham HD-tACS over the left IFG at 6 or 70 Hz, 20 healthy adults vocalized the vowel sounds while hearing their voice unexpectedly pitch-shifted by ±200 cents. The results showed that 6 or 70 Hz HD-tACS over the left IFG led to larger magnitudes and longer latencies of vocal compensations for pitch perturbations paralleled by larger ERP P2 responses than sham HD-tACS. Moreover, there was a lack of frequency specificity that showed no significant differences between 6 and 70 Hz HD-tACS. These findings provide first causal evidence linking the left IFG to vocal pitch regulation, suggesting that the left IFG is an important part of the feedback control network that mediates vocal compensations for auditory feedback errors.

The supplementary motor area (SMA) has been implicated in the feedforward control of speech production. Whether this region is involved in speech motor control through auditory feedback, however, remains uncertain. The present event-related potential (ERP) study examined the role of the left SMA in vocal pitch regulation in a causal manner by combining auditory feedback manipulations and neuronavigated continuous theta bust stimulation (c-TBS). After receiving c-TBS over the left SMA or the control site (vertex), twenty young adults vocalized the vowel sound /u/ while hearing their voice unexpectedly pitch-shifted -50 or -200 cents. Compared to the control stimulation, c-TBS over the left SMA led to decreased vocal compensations for pitch perturbations of -50 and -200 cents. A significant decrease of N1 and P2 responses to -200 cents perturbations was also found when comparing active and control stimulation. Major neural generators of decreased P2 responses included the right-lateralized superior and middle temporal gyrus and angular gyrus. Notably, a significant correlation was found between active-control differences in the vocal compensation and P2 responses for the -200 cents perturbations. These findings provide neurobehavioral evidence for a causal link between the left SMA and auditory-motor integration for vocal pitch regulation, suggesting that the left SMA receives auditory feedback information and mediates vocal compensations for feedback errors in a bottom-up manner.

Accumulating evidence suggests that impairment in auditory-vocal integration characterized by abnormally enhanced vocal compensations for auditory feedback perturbations contributes to hypokinetic dysarthria in Parkinson's disease (PD). However, treatment of this abnormality remains a challenge. The present study examined whether abnormalities in auditory-motor integration for vocal pitch regulation in PD can be modulated by neuronavigated continuous theta burst stimulation (c-TBS) over the left supplementary motor area (SMA). After receiving active or sham c-TBS over left SMA, 16 individuals with PD vocalized vowel sounds while hearing their own voice unexpectedly pitch-shifted two semitones upward or downward. A group of pairwise-matched healthy participants was recruited as controls. Their vocal responses and event-related potentials (ERPs) were measured and compared across the conditions. The results showed that applying c-TBS over left SMA led to smaller vocal responses paralleled by smaller P1 and P2 responses and larger N1 responses in individuals with PD. Major neural generators of reduced P2 responses were located in the right inferior and medial frontal gyrus, pre- and post-central gyrus, and insula. Moreover, suppressed vocal compensations were predicted by reduced P2 amplitudes and enhanced N1 amplitudes. Notably, abnormally enhanced vocal and P2 responses in individuals with PD were normalized by c-TBS over left SMA when compared to healthy controls. Our results provide the first causal evidence that abnormalities in auditory-motor control of vocal pitch production in PD can be modulated by c-TBS over left SMA, suggesting that it may be a promising non-invasive treatment for speech motor disorders in PD.

Oily wastewater produced in the process of oil extraction has a potential threat to the environment. In this paper, diethylenetriamine was used to modify rice straw powder (RSP) by a solvent-free strategy, and the obtained product (AM-RSP) was utilized to dispose oily wastewater. AM-RSP was characterized by Field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM), energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscope (FT-IR) and BET. The factors affecting the demulsification performance (DP) such as dosage, salinity and pH value were detailly investigated. The results indicated that light transmittance (ET) and oil removal rate (ER) of separated water could reach 93.5% and 96.5%, respectively, within 40 min with 150 mg/L of AM-RSP at room temperature. Also, AM-RSP had a good salt resistance. In addition, three-phase contact angle (TCA), formation of interfacial film, interfacial activity, dynamic interfacial tension (IFT), coalescence time of droplets and zeta potential were adopted to probe the demulsification mechanism.

Aims: In garlic cultivation, long-time monoculture has resulted in continuous-cropping obstacles. However, the cause has not been studied to date. Methods: We analyzed soils from garlic fields in Pengzhou, China, to determine continuous-cropping obstacle related changes in soil physicochemical properties and enzyme activities, and in the diversity and composition of bacterial and fungal communities. Furthermore, we examined the relationships between soil properties and the bacterial and fungal communities. Results: The soil pH and the soil catalase, urease, invertase, and polyphenol oxidase activities were lower in the cropping obstacle soil than in the healthy control soil. The richness and diversity of the bacteria were lower in the cropping obstacle soil than in the control. The bacterial and fungal communities in the cropping obstacle soil were clearly different from those in the control soil. The differences in bacterial communities between the cropping obstacle soil and the control soil were associated with differences in pH and available potassium content. The taxa with higher relative abundances in the cropping obstacle soils included potential plant pathogens and the taxa with lower relative abundances included potential plant growth promoters. Conclusion: The enrichment of plant pathogens and the depletion of plant growth promoting fungi may have contributed to the poor growth of garlic in the cropping obstacle soil. The enzyme activity and microbial community differences were associated with acidification that was likely an important factor in the deterioration of the soil ecological environment and the garlic cropping obstacle. The results provide information to guide agricultural practices in cultivating garlic.

The barrenness of large mine tailing sand reservoirs increases the risks for landslides and erosion that may be accompanied with transfer of contaminants into the surrounding environment. The tailing sand is poor in nutrients, which effectively complicates the vegetation process. We investigated direct planting of Pennisetum giganteum into tailing sand using two pit planting methods: the plants were transplanted either directly into pits filled with soil or into soil-filled bio-matrix pots made of organic material. After growing P. giganteum in iron tailing sand for 360 days, the dry weight of the plants grown in the bio-matrix pot (T2) was approximately twofold higher than that of the plants grown in soil placed directly into the sand (T1). At 360 days, the organic matter (OM) content in the soil below the pit was the lowest in the not-planted treatment (T0) and the highest in T2, the available N (AN) contents were higher in T1 and T2 than in T0, and the available P and K contents were the highest in T2. At 360 days, the Shannon diversity of the soil microbial communities was higher in T1 and T2 than in T0, and the community compositions were clearly separated from each other. The profiles of predicted C cycle catabolism functions and N fixation-related functions in T1 and T2 at 360 days were different from those in the other communities. The results showed that P. giganteum grew well in the iron tailing sand, especially in the bio-matrix pot treatment, and the increased nutrient contents and changes in microbial communities indicated that using the bio-matrix pot in planting had potential to improve the vegetation process in iron tailing sands effectively.

The supramarginal gyrus (SMG) has been implicated in auditory-motor integration for vocal production. However, whether the SMG is bilaterally or unilaterally involved in auditory feedback control of vocal production in a causal manner remains unclear. The present event-related potential (ERP) study investigated the causal roles of the left and right SMG to auditory-vocal integration using neuronavigated continuous theta burst stimulation (c-TBS). Twenty-four young adults produced sustained vowel phonations and heard their voice unexpectedly pitch-shifted by ±200 cents after receiving active or sham c-TBS over the left or right SMG. As compared to sham stimulation, c-TBS over the left or right SMG led to significantly smaller vocal compensations for pitch perturbations that were accompanied by smaller cortical P2 responses. Moreover, no significant differences were found in the vocal and ERP responses when comparing active c-TBS over the left vs. right SMG. These findings provide neurobehavioral evidence for a causal influence of both the left and right SMG on auditory feedback control of vocal production. Decreased vocal compensations paralleled by reduced P2 responses following c-TBS over the bilateral SMG support their roles for auditory-motor transformation in a bottom-up manner: receiving auditory feedback information and mediating vocal compensations for feedback errors.
