RESUMO

Spontaneous separation of immiscible organic droplets has substantial research implications for environmental protection and resource regeneration. Compared to the widely explored separation of oil-water mixtures, there are fewer reports on separating mixed organic droplets on open surfaces due to the low surface tension differences. Efficient separation of mixed organic liquids by exploiting the rapid spontaneous transport of droplets on open surfaces remains a challenge. Here, through the fusion of inspiration from the fast droplet transport capability of Sarracenia trichome and the asymmetric wedge channel structure of shorebird beaks, this work proposes a spine with hierarchical microchannels and wedge channels (SHMW). Due to the synergistic effect of capillary force and asymmetric Laplace force, the SHMW can rapidly separate mixed organic droplets into two pure phases without requiring additional energy. In particular, the self-spreading of the oil solution on the open channel surface is utilized to amplify the surface energy difference between two droplets, and SHMW achieves the pickup of oil droplets floating on the surface of the organic solution. The maximum separation efficiency on 3-SHMW can reach 99.63%, and it can also realize the antigravity separation of mixed organic droplets with a surface tension difference as low as 0.87 mN·m-1. Furthermore, SHMW performs controllable separation, oil droplet pickup, and continuous separation and collection of mixed organic droplets. It is expected that this cooperative structure composed of hierarchical microchannels and wedge channels will be realized in resource recovery or chemical reactions in industrial production processes.

Objective: Tuberculosis outbreaks in schools are common in China. This study aimed to introduce and evaluate a new screening process to help control outbreaks. Methods: Screening information of students in three schools with tuberculosis outbreaks was collected. QuantiFERON-TB gold in-tube (QFT) results were used as the reference standard to determine the cutoff value of the tuberculin skin test (TST) for diagnosing students who need to have preventive medication. Results: A total of 1,232 students and teachers from three different schools that all had more than three student patients with tuberculosis were included in this study. In total, 308 (25.0%) students had an induration diameter ≥10 mm; among students in a class different from the index case, the infection rate was 24.4% (264/1,084), which was lower than the rate among students in the same class (29.7%) (P = 0.157). Students in the same class as the index tuberculosis case had a much higher QFT positivity compared to those in a different class (58.1% vs. 7.7%, P < 0.0001). Diagnostic agreement between TST ≥10 mm and QFT was 36.6%. The diagnostic value reached the highest when the induration diameter of TST was ≥9 mm, with a sensitivity and specificity of 94.1% (95% CI: 89.4%-97.1%) and 27.6% (95% CI: 24.9%-30.4%), respectively. The area under the curve (AUC) was 0.664 (95% CI: 0.637-0.690, P < 0.0001). Conclusion: In tuberculosis outbreaks in schools, if there are three or more cases of students with tuberculosis in a class or if the moderate or strong TST positivity rate is much higher than the normal range in the region, attention should be paid to those with moderately positive TST results. Interferon-gamma release assays (IGRAs) are recommended to be conducted following TST on the day of reading the results, especially among students sharing the same class with the index case. In resource-poor areas lacking IGRAs, the induration diameter of TST can be appropriately reduced from 15 to 9 mm to enhance the sensitivity of TST.

The aim of this study was to examine the effect of whey protein isolate (WPI) on the digestibility and physicochemical properties of potato starch (PS) after heat treatment. WPI reduced the digestibility of PS and increased the order and aggregation structure of gelatinized PS. Examination of the rheological properties of the PS-WPI mixed system before and after adding different chemicals (sodium chloride, urea, and sodium dodecyl sulfate) indicated an involvement of hydrogen bonds and hydrophobic interactions in the PS-WPI gelatinization system. The pasting properties, swelling power, and thermal properties indicated that WPI suppressed the swelling and gelatinization of PS. The addition of WPI reduced the amylose leaching rate from the starch granules, indicating that the presence of exogenous protein could prevent amylose diffusion from the starch granules. Native WPI and its hydrolysate also inhibited amyloglucosidase activity. These findings indicated that the mechanism by which WPI reduces PS digestion involves hydrophobic interactions and hydrogen bonding between WPI and PS, as well as enzyme activity inhibition.

A flavivirus, Culex flavivirus, was first isolated from Chinese mosquitoes with high sequences similarities to those of flaviviruses found in America and Japan. In this study, a total of 48 pools of field-collected mosquitoes were sampled from Dandong of Liaoning Province, China during July to September of 2011. Six isolated viruses showing cytopathic effect (CPE) in C6/C36 cells were tested by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction(RT-PCR)using Flavivirus genus--specific primers and Culex flavivirus-specific primers and the positive PCR-product was sequenced and compared with the sequences of 10 isolates from GenBank. Phylogenetic tree of NS5 and enevelop genes of flavivirus were constructed. The GenBank accession numbers of NS5 gene were JQ409188, JQ409186, JQ409187, JQ409191, JQ409189 and JQ409190. The GenBank accession numbers of envelope gene were JQ065883, JQ065882, JQ065881, JQ065879,JQ065877 and JQ065878.
