RESUMO

Red mud (RM) is a typical bulk solid waste with Fe/Al/Si/Ca-rich characteristics that has been used to prepare various heterogeneous catalysts such as iron-based catalysts and supported catalysts. Prussian blue analogues (PBA) is a low-cost, environmentally friendly, and active site rich iron-based metal organic framework, but its catalytic properties are adversely affected by their easy aggregation. In this study, nickel-doped RM-based PBA (RM-Ni PBA) was synthesized by acid dissolution-coprecipitation method for the degradation of ciprofloxacin (CIP). The characterization showed that RM-Ni PBA was a material with excellent dispersibility, large specific surface area, and abundant active sites. The degradation results showed that the removal efficiency of CIP in the RM-Ni PBA/H2O2 system was 16.63, 1.78, and 1.81 times that of RM, RM-PB, and Ni PBA, respectively. It was found that 1O2 was the main reactive oxygen species (ROS) dominated the degradation process, and its formation was accompanied by the mutual conversion of Ni(II)/Fe(II) and Ni(III)/Fe(III). Notably, the degradation process maintained a satisfactory efficiency over a wide pH range (3-9) and exhibited strong anti-interference ability against impurities such as Cl-, SO42-, and NO3-. The components and contents of RM-Ni PBA remained relatively stable during the degradation process. In addition, the degradation intermediates of CIP were identified, and possible degradation pathways were proposed. This study is expected to provide theoretical basis and technical guidance for the application of RM-based heterogeneous catalyst in the treatment of antibiotic wastewater.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between anterior cerebral artery (ACA) occlusion and moyamoya disease (MMD) has rarely been studied. In this study, we focused on a special type of MMD: isolated ACA-occlusive MMD. We investigated clinical attributes, genotypes and progression risk factors in patients with ACA-occlusive MMD, providing initial insights into the relationship between ACA occlusion and MMD. METHODS: We retrospectively analysed digital subtraction angiography (DSA) from 2486 patients and diagnosed 139 patients with ACA-occlusive MMD. RNF213 p.R4810K (rs112735431) mutation analysis was performed. Patients were categorised into progression and non-progression groups based on whether they progressed to typical MMD. Differences in clinical characteristics, neuropsychological assessment, radiological findings and genotypes were evaluated. Logistic regression analyses identified risk factors for ACA-occlusive MMD progression. RESULTS: The median age of patients with ACA-occlusive MMD was 36 years, and the primary symptom was transient ischaemic attack (TIA). 72.3% of ACA-occlusive MMD patients had cognitive decline. Of 116 patients who underwent RNF213 gene mutation analysis, 90 patients (77.6%) carried the RNF213 p.R4810K GG allele and 26 (22.4%) carried the GA allele. Of 102 patients with follow-up DSA data, 40 patients (39.2%) progressed. Kaplan-Meier curve estimates indicated a higher incidence of ischaemic stroke in the progression group during follow-up (p=0.035). Younger age (p=0.041), RNF213 p.R4810K GA genotype (p=0.037) and poor collateral compensation from the middle cerebral artery (MCA) to ACA (p<0.001) were risk factors of ACA-occlusive MMD progression to typical MMD. CONCLUSIONS: Cognitive decline and TIA might be the main manifestations of ACA-occlusive MMD. Isolated ACA occlusion may be an early signal of MMD. The initial lesion site of MMD is not strictly confined to the terminal portion of the internal carotid artery. Younger patients, patients with RNF213 p.R4810K GA genotype or those with inadequate MCA-to-ACA compensation are more likely to develop typical MMD.

This study proposes a novel method by forming biogenic K-jarosite coatings on pyrite surfaces driven by Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans (A. ferrooxidans) to reduce heavy metal release and prevent acid mine drainage (AMD) production. Different thicknesses of K-jarosite coatings (0.7 to 1.1 µm) were able to form on pyrite surfaces in the presence of A. ferrooxidans, which positively correlated with the initial addition of Fe2+ and K+ concentrations. The inhibiting effect of K-jarosite coatings on pyrite oxidation was studied by electrochemical measurements, chemical oxidation tests, and bio-oxidation tests. The experimental results showed that the best passivation performance was achieved when 20 mM Fe2+ and 6.7 mM K+ were initially introduced with a bacterial concentration of 4 × 108 cells·mL-1, reducing chemical and biological oxidation by 70 % and 98 %, respectively (based on the concentration of total iron dissolved into the solution by pyrite oxidation). Similarly, bio-oxidation tests of two mine waste samples also showed sound inhibition effects, which offers a preliminary demonstration of the potential applicability of this method to actual waste rock. This study presents a new perspective on passivating the oxidation of metal sulfide tailings or waste and preventing AMD.

BACKGROUND: To explore the risk factors for preoperative massive cerebral infarction (MCI) in pediatric patients with moyamoya disease (MMD). METHODS: Pediatric patients with MMD treated between 2017 and 2022 were enrolled. Logistic regression analysis was performed to identify risk factors for MCI among the patients, and a nomogram was constructed to identify potential predictors of MCI. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves and areas under the curves were calculated to determine the effects of different risk factors. RESULTS: This study included 308 pediatric patients with MMD, including 36 with MCI. The MCI group exhibited an earlier age of onset than the non-MCI group. Significant intergroup differences were observed in familial MMD history, postcirculation involvement, duration from diagnosis to initiation of treatment, Suzuki stage, magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) score, collateral circulation score, and RNF213 p.R4810K variations. Family history, higher MRA score, lower collateral circulation score, and RNF213 p.R4810K variations were substantial risk factors for MCI in pediatric patients with MMD. The nomogram demonstrated excellent discrimination and calibration capabilities. The integrated ROC model, which included all the abovementioned four variables, showed superior diagnostic precision with a sensitivity of 67.86%, specificity of 87.01%, and accuracy of 85.11%. CONCLUSIONS: This study showed that family history, elevated MRA score, reduced collateral circulation score, and RNF213 p.R4810K variations are risk factors for MCI in pediatric patients with MMD. The synthesized model including these variables demonstrated superior predictive efficacy; thus, it can facilitate early identification of at-risk patients and timely initiation of appropriate interventions.

OBJECTIVES: Intracranial vessel wall enhancement (VWE) on high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging (HRMRI) is associated with the progression and poor prognosis of moyamoya disease (MMD). This study assessed potential risk factors for VWE in MMD. METHODS: We evaluated MMD patients using HRMRI and traditional angiography examinations. The participants were divided into VWE and non-VWE groups based on HRMRI. Logistic regression was performed to compare the risk factors for VWE in MMD. The incidence of cerebrovascular events of the different subgroups according to risk factors was compared using Kaplan-Meier survival and Cox regression. RESULTS: We included 283 MMD patients, 84 of whom had VWE on HRMRI. The VWE group had higher modified Rankin Scale scores at admission (p = 0.014) and a higher incidence of ischaemia and haemorrhage (p = 0.002) than did the non-VWE group. Risk factors for VWE included the ring finger protein 213 (RNF213) p.R4810K variant (odds ratio [OR] 2.01, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.08-3.76, p = 0.028), hyperhomocysteinaemia (HHcy) (OR 5.08, 95% CI 2.34-11.05, p < 0.001), and smoking history (OR 3.49, 95% CI 1.08-11.31, p = 0.037). During the follow-up of 63.9 ± 13.2 months (median 65 months), 18 recurrent stroke events occurred. Cox regression showed that VWE and the RNF213 p.R4810K variant were risk factors for stroke. CONCLUSION: The RNF213 p.R4810K variant is strongly associated with VWE and poor prognosis in MMD. HHcy and smoking are independent risk factors for VWE. CLINICAL RELEVANCE STATEMENT: Vessel wall enhancement in moyamoya disease is closely associated with poor prognosis, especially related to the ring finger protein 213 p.R4810K variant, hyperhomocysteinaemia, and smoking, providing crucial risk assessment information for the clinic. KEY POINTS: • The baseline presence of vessel wall enhancement is significantly associated with poor prognosis in moyamoya disease. • The ring finger protein 213 p.R4810K variant is strongly associated with vessel wall enhancement and poor prognosis in moyamoya disease. • Hyperhomocysteinaemia and smoking are independent risk factors for vessel wall enhancement in moyamoya disease.

Studies have shown that exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) affects various cells, systems, and organs in vivo and in vitro. PM2.5 adversely affects human health through mechanisms such as oxidative stress, inflammatory response, autophagy, ferroptosis, and endoplasmic reticulum stress. Phytochemicals are of interest for their broad range of physiological activities and few side effects, and, in recent years, they have been widely used to mitigate the adverse effects caused by PM2.5 exposure. In this review, the roles of various phytochemicals are summarized, including those of polyphenols, carotenoids, organic sulfur compounds, and saponin compounds, in mitigating PM2.5-induced adverse reactions through different molecular mechanisms, including anti-inflammatory and antioxidant mechanisms, inhibition of endoplasmic reticulum stress and ferroptosis, and regulation of autophagy. These are useful as a scientific basis for the prevention and treatment of disease caused by PM2.5.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the association between stroke and imaging and clinical features in conservatively treated patients with moyamoya disease (MMD). PURPOSE: To investigate independent risk factors for stroke in conservatively treated patients with MMD during a long-term follow-up. STUDY TYPE: Prospective study. SUBJECTS: One hundred sixty conservatively managed patients with MMD (median age 46 years, 89 male). FIELD STRENGTH/SEQUENCE: Time of flight, turbo inversion recovery magnitude T1WI, turbo spin echo (TSE) T2WI, echo-planar imaging DWI, T2-fluid attenuated inversion recovery, dynamic susceptibility contrast-magnetic resonance imaging, and pre- and post-contrast 3D TSE T1WI sequences at 3.0 Tesla. ASSESSMENT: Patients were assessed at baseline and followed yearly. Ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke incidence rates were determined. Multiple demographic, clinical (modified Rankin score [mRS]), and cerebral imaging (cerebral blood volume [CBV] and concentric enhancement of arterial wall) factors at baseline were considered as potential predictors of stroke during the follow-up period. STATISTICAL TESTS: Univariable and multivariable Cox proportional hazards models to calculate the hazard ratios (HRs) and corresponding 95% confidence interval (CI) for stroke. Cumulative risk of stroke was estimated by the Kaplan-Meier product-limit method. A P value <0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS: The median follow-up duration was 47 months. During the follow-up period, 18 (11.25%) patients experienced stroke events (13 [8.13%] ischemic, 5 [3.12%] hemorrhagic). Univariable analysis showed that 11 factors were significantly associated with stroke. After adjustment for clinical characteristics, multivariable analysis showed that mRS score ≥3 (HR, 1.99; 95% CI, 1.26-3.14), decreased CBV (HR, 5.31; 95% CI, 2.32-12.13), and concentric enhancement of the arterial wall (HR, 4.16; 95% CI, 1.55-11.15) were significantly associated with stroke. DATA CONCLUSION: Decreased CBV, mRS score ≥ 3, and concentric enhancement of the arterial wall were significantly associated with increased incidence of stroke in conservatively treated MMD. EVIDENCE LEVEL: 2 TECHNICAL EFFICACY: Stage 4.

The massive accumulation of red mud (RM) and the abuse of antibiotics pose a threat to environment safety and human health. In this study, we synthesized RM-based Prussian blue (RM-PB) by acid solution-coprecipitation method to activate H2O2 to degrade norfloxacin, which reached about 90% degradation efficiency at pH 5 within 60 min and maintained excellent catalytic performance over a wide pH range (3-11). Due to better dispersion and unique pore properties, RM-PB exposed more active sites, thus the RM-PB/H2O2 system produced more reactive oxygen species. As a result, the removal rate of norfloxacin by RM-PB/H2O2 system was 8.58 times and 2.62 times of that by RM/H2O2 system and PB/H2O2 system, respectively. The reactive oxygen species (ROS) produced in the degradation process included ·OH, ·O2- and 1O2, with 1O2 playing a dominant role. The formation and transformation of these ROS was accompanied by the Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycle, which was conducive for the sustained production of ROS. The RM-PB/H2O2 system maintained a higher degradation efficiency after five cycles, and the material exhibited strong stability, with a low iron leaching concentration. Further research showed the degradation process was less affected by Cl-, SO42-, NO3-, and humic acids, but was inhibited by HCO3- and HPO42-. In addition, we also proposed the possible degradation pathway of norfloxacin. This work is expected to improve the resource utilization rate of RM and achieve treating waste with waste.

Today, with the globalization of the food trade progressing, food safety continues to warrant widespread attention. Foodborne diseases caused by contaminated food, including foodborne pathogens, seriously threaten public health and the economy. This has led to the development of more sensitive and accurate methods for detecting pathogenic bacteria. Many signal amplification techniques have been used to improve the sensitivity of foodborne pathogen detection. Among them, hybridization chain reaction (HCR), an isothermal nucleic acid hybridization signal amplification technique, has received increasing attention due to its enzyme-free and isothermal characteristics, and pathogenic bacteria detection methods using HCR for signal amplification have experienced rapid development in the last five years. In this review, we first describe the development of detection technologies for food contaminants represented by pathogens and introduce the fundamental principles, classifications, and characteristics of HCR. Furthermore, we highlight the application of various biosensors based on HCR nucleic acid amplification technology in detecting foodborne pathogens. Lastly, we summarize and offer insights into the prospects of HCR technology and its application in pathogen detection.

BACKGROUND: The features of intracranial arteries in patients with Moyamoya disease (MMD) have been widely investigated. However, the MR characteristics of extracranial internal carotid artery (EICA) and their effect on outcomes of revascularization treatment are not fully understood. PURPOSE: To investigate the characteristics of EICA and their relationship with outcomes of revascularization treatment in adult patients with MMD based on higher-resolution MRI (HRMRI). STUDY TYPE: Prospective interventional outcomes. SUBJECTS: Two hundred eighty-eight consecutive patients with MMD (mean age: 43.7 ± 11.2 years; 140 male). FIELD STRENGTH/SEQUENCE: Turbo inversion recovery magnitude T1-weighted imaging and turbo spin echo (TSE) T2-weighted imaging, three-dimensional time-of-flight MR angiography, T2-fluid attenuated inversion recovery, and 3D T1-SPACE vessel wall imaging at 3.0 T. ASSESSMENT: The HRMRI characteristics of EICA were determined. The relationship between the characteristics of EICA (proximal stenosis, diffuse wall thickening, carotid plaques, and luminal thrombosis) and stroke outcomes of revascularization treatment in patients with MMD was analyzed. The discriminative ability of EICA characteristics in combination with intracranial carotid artery features (involvement of vessel segments, bilateral involvement, and Suzuki stage) to determine stroke outcomes was compared with that of intracranial artery features alone during a mean 8.0 months follow-up period. STATISTICAL TESTS: Cox proportional hazards models and Kaplan-Meier curves to calculate the hazard ratios (HRs) for stroke with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) for assessing discriminative performance. A P value <0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS: During a mean 8.0 ± 2.2 months follow-up, of the 288 participants, 137 had proximal stenosis (47.6%), 106 had diffuse wall thickening (36.8%), 60 had carotid plaques (20.8%), and 27 had luminal thrombosis (9.4%) of EICA. Of these features, proximal stenosis (HR = 2.86; 95% CI = 1.13-7.29) and diffuse wall thickening (HR = 2.62; 95% CI = 1.16-5.94) of EICA were significantly associated with stroke after surgery, before and after adjusting for confounding factors. In discriminating the stroke outcomes after surgery, combining characteristics of EICA with features of intracranial arteries resulted in a significant incremental improvement (DeLong test, P < 0.05) in the AUC over that obtained with features of intracranial arteries alone (AUC: 0.73 vs. 0.60-0.64). CONCLUSION: Proximal stenosis and diffuse wall thickening of EICA were significantly associated with stroke outcomes after surgery in patients with MMD. Our findings suggest that understanding the characteristics of EICA has added value for intracranial vessels in predicting future events after surgery in patients with MMD. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the diagnostic performance of high-resolution magnetic resonance-vessel wall imaging (HRMR-VWI) in differentiating moyamoya disease (MMD) from atherosclerosis-associated moyamoya vasculopathy (AS-MMV) and investigate an accurate approach for the differential diagnosis. METHODS: Adult patients who were diagnosed as MMD or AS-MMV and underwent HRMR-VWI were retrospectively included. The three vessel wall features (outer diameter (OD), remodeling index (RI), and pattern of vessel wall thickening) of middle cerebral artery (MCA) in identifying MMD from AS-MMV were assessed and compared. Furthermore, subgroup analysis stratified by degree of luminal stenosis was performed and the cutoff values of different vessel wall features in differentiating MMD from AS-MMV were also calculated. RESULTS: A total of 265 patients (160 cases of MMD and 105 AS-MMV) were included. Patients with AS-MMV had greater OD and RI and were more likely to exhibit eccentric thickening of vessel wall compared to those with MMD (all p < 0.001). The ROC analysis showed that the AUC value of OD was greater than that of RI (0.912 vs. 0.889, p = 0.007) in differentiating MMD from AS-MMV, and their corresponding cutoff values were 1.77 mm and 0.27, respectively. And the AUC value of pattern of vessel wall thickening was 0.786 in non-occluded patients. With the increase of lumen stenosis, the discrimination power of the three indicators enhanced correspondingly. CONCLUSIONS: HRMR-VWI is valuable in distinguishing MMD from AS-MMV. The OD of MCA has better diagnostic performance in differentiating AS-MMV from MMD compared to RI and pattern of vessel wall thickening. CLINICAL RELEVANCE STATEMENT: The outer diameter of the involved artery proved to be both accurate and convenient in distinguishing atherosclerosis-associated moyamoya vasculopathy from moyamoya disease and may provide a quantitative reference for clinical diagnosis. KEY POINTS: High-resolution magnetic resonance-vessel wall imaging is valuable in distinguishing atherosclerosis-associated moyamoya vasculopathy from moyamoya disease. Compared to remodeling index and pattern of vessel wall thickening, outer diameter is more accurate in differentiating atherosclerosis-associated moyamoya vasculopathy from moyamoya disease. With the increase of lumen stenosis, the discrimination power of outer diameter, remodeling index, and pattern of vessel wall thickening enhanced correspondingly.

With the development of new technologies for rapid and high-throughput bacterial detection, ATP-based bioluminescence technology is making progress. Because live bacteria contain ATP, the number of bacteria is correlated with the level of ATP under certain conditions, so that the method of luciferase catalyzing the fluorescence reaction of luciferin with ATP is widely used for the detection of bacteria. This method is easy to operate, has a short detection cycle, does not require much human resources, and is suitable for long-term continuous monitoring. Currently, other methods are being explored in combination with bioluminescence for more accurate, portable and efficient detection. This paper introduces the principle, development and application of bacterial bioluminescence detection based on ATP and compares the combination of bioluminescence and other bacterial detection methods in recent years. In addition, this paper also examines the development prospects and direction of bioluminescence in bacterial detection, hoping to provide a new idea for the application of ATP-based bioluminescence.

OBJECTIVES: We aimed to compare the long-term outcomes and surgical benefits between moyamoya disease (MMD) and atherosclerosis-associated moyamoya vasculopathy (AS-MMV) using high-resolution MRI (HRMRI). METHODS: MMV patients were retrospectively included and divided into the MMD and AS-MMV groups according to vessel wall features on HRMRI. Kaplan-Meier survival and Cox regression were performed to compare the incidence of cerebrovascular events and prognosis of encephaloduroarteriosynangiosis (EDAS) treatment between MMD and AS-MMV. RESULTS: Of the 1173 patients (mean age: 42.4±11.0 years; male: 51.0%) included in the study, 881 were classified into the MMD group and 292 into the AS-MMV group. During the average follow-up of 46.0±24.7 months, the incidence of cerebrovascular events in the MMD group was higher compared with that in the AS-MMV group before (13.7% vs 7.2%; HR 1.86; 95% CI 1.17 to 2.96; p=0.008) and after propensity score matching (6.1% vs 7.3%; HR 2.24; 95% CI 1.34 to 3.76; p=0.002). Additionally, patients treated with EDAS had a lower incidence of events than those not treated with EDAS, regardless of whether they were in the MMD (HR 0.65; 95% CI 0.42 to 0.97; p=0.043) or AS-MMV group (HR 0.49; 95% CI 0.51 to 0.98; p=0.048). CONCLUSIONS: Patients with MMD had a higher risk of ischaemic stroke than those with AS-MMV, and patients with both MMD and AS-MMV could benefit from EDAS. Our findings suggest that HRMRI could be used to identify those who are at a higher risk of future cerebrovascular events.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to determine the association between vessel wall enhancement and progression of arterial stenosis and clinical outcomes in patients with moyamoya (MMD) using high-resolution magnetic resonance (HRMR) vessel wall imaging. METHODS: Consecutive participants diagnosed with MMD were prospectively recruited and underwent HRMR at baseline and during follow-up, which had an interval period of ≥ 6 months and were clinically followed up for ≤ 24 months to record the occurrence of ischemic stroke. The relationship between vessel wall enhancement and arterial stenosis progression and stroke occurrence was evaluated. RESULTS: HRMR vessel wall imaging was used to identify 309 stenotic lesions at the internal carotid artery (ICA) in 170 participants (mean age: 37.7 ± 11.3 years old, male: 44.1%). The baseline presence (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 3.57, 95% CI = 1.97-6.44, p < 0.001) and progression (aOR = 2.96, 95% CI = 1.29-6.80, p = 0.010) of vessel wall enhancement and middle cerebral artery (MCA) involvement (aOR = 4.98, 95% CI = 1.50-16.52, p = 0.009) were significantly associated with rapid progression of arterial stenosis. Furthermore, vessel wall enhancement (adjusted HR = 3.59, 95% CI = 1.33-9.70, p = 0.011) and rapid progression of arterial stenosis (adjusted HR = 4.52, 95% CI = 1.48-13.81, p = 0.008) were correlated with future stroke occurrence. CONCLUSION: The baseline presence of vessel wall enhancement was associated with rapid progression of arterial stenosis and increased risk for stroke in MMD patients. Our findings suggest that vessel wall enhancement may serve as a predictor of disease progression and poor outcomes in MMD. KEY POINTS: • The baseline presence of vessel wall enhancement was significantly associated with the rapid progression of arterial stenosis. • The baseline presence of vessel wall enhancement and rapid progression of arterial stenosis were both correlated with increased risk for future occurrence of stroke. • Our findings suggest that vessel wall enhancement may serve as a predictor of rapid progression of arterial stenosis and poor outcomes in MMD patients.

Background and purpose: 3D pseudo-continuous arterial spin labeling (3D pCASL) is commonly used to measure arterial cerebral blood flow (CBF). The aim of this study was to assess the clinical feasibility and accuracy of 3D pCASL in comparison with dynamic susceptibility contrast (DSC) perfusion imaging in moyamoya disease (MMD). Materials and methods: A total of 174 MMD patients underwent 3D pCASL and DSC-MRI for evaluating cerebral blood perfusion. 3D-pCASL with two single post-labeling delay (PLD) times (1,500 and 2,500 ms) was used to measure CBF. The values of DSC-CBF and ASL-CBF were calculated for major arterial territories including the anterior, middle, and posterior cerebral arteries as well as the areas based on the Alberta Stroke Program Early CT Score (ASPECTS) template. The correlation between DSC-CBF and ASL-CBF was analyzed. The consistency and accuracy between the two methods in assessing the cerebral ischemic state before and after surgery were analyzed. Results: The correlation between ASL (2,500 ms) and DSC-MRI was slightly better than the correlation between ASL (1,500 ms) and DSC-MRI in major vascular territories before revascularization. Significant correlations were observed between ASL (2,500 ms) and DSC-MRI and between ASL (1,500 ms) and DSC-MRI in major vascular territories after revascularization. For 44 surgically treated patients, the scores of ASPECTS for CBF on the operated side were significantly different before and after revascularization (p < 0.05) and showed good consistency on all the examination methods. A comparison of the scores of ASPECTS of the three parameters before and after revascularization showed that there was no statistical difference between them (p > 0.05). Conclusion: Compared to DSC-MRI, 3D pCASL can assess the cerebral blood perfusion in MMD before and after revascularization effectively. 3D pCASL showed the feasibility and clinical utility value in patients with MMD.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to compare the characteristics of carotid plaques between patients with transient ischemic attack (TIA) and ischemic stroke using magnetic resonance (MR) imaging. METHODS: Patients with a recent ischemic stroke or TIA who exhibited atherosclerotic plaques of carotid arteries in the symptomatic sides determined by MR vessel wall imaging were recruited. The plaque morphology and compositions including intraplaque hemorrhage (IPH), lipid-rich necrotic-core (LRNC) and calcification were compared between TIA and stroke patients. Logistic regression was performed to relate the plaque characteristics to the types of ischemic events. RESULTS: A total of 270 patients with TIA or ischemic stroke were recruited. Stroke patients had a significantly higher prevalence of diabetes (42.2% vs. 28.2%, p = 0.021), greater mean wall area (35.1 ± 10.1 mm2 vs. 32.0 ± 7.7 mm2, p = 0.004), mean wall thickness (1.3 ± 0.2 mm vs. 1.2 ± 0.2 mm, p = 0.001), maximum normalized wall index (NWI)(63.9% ± 6.0% vs. 62.2% ± 5.9%, p = 0.023) and %volume of LRNC (9.7% ± 8.2% vs. 7.4% ± 7.9%, p = 0.025) in the carotid arteries compared to those with TIA. After adjustment for clinical factors, above characteristics of carotid arteries were significantly associated with the type of ischemic events. After further adjustment for maximum NWI, this association remained statistically significant (OR, 1.41; CI, 1.01-1.96; p = 0.041). CONCLUSIONS: Ischemic stroke patients had larger plaque burden and greater proportion of LRNC in carotid plaques compared to those with TIA. This study suggests that ischemic stroke patients had more vulnerable plaques compared to those with TIA.

The food-derived peptides hydrolyzed from native food protein matrix exhibited various bioactivities and multimeric structures, which make them the promising well-defined nanoplatforms candidates to co-deliver themselves with other bioactive compounds. In this study, zein-egg white derived peptides-chitosan (Z-EWDP-CS) ternary nanoparticles (NPs) were successfully fabricated by the spontaneous assembly to enhance the stability and bioactivity of curcumin (Cur). The novel ternary NPs exhibited a typical nano-spherical structure (138.63 nm, 40.50 mV), and adorable encapsulation efficiency (EE, 93.87%) for Cur. FTIR, XRD and DSC results verified that Cur changed from a crystalline state to an amorphous state, and was successfully entrapped in the cavity of Z-EWDP-CS NPs. Furthermore, the thermal stability, photochemical stability, salt stability, and antioxidant activity were considerably improved in the NPs after the addition of EWDP. Our results demonstrate that the food-derived peptides could be an ideal affinity agent for the co-delivery of themselves with hydrophobic nutraceuticals.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate the enhancement characteristics of vessel wall in patients with moyamoya disease (MMD) using 3D high-resolution magnetic resonance (MR) imaging and their relationship with initial and recurrent intracranial hemorrhage. METHODS: Consecutive patients with MMD were retrospectively analyzed and classified as intracranial hemorrhagic and non-hemorrhagic groups according to the CT or MR images. The clinical features and vessel wall characteristics were compared between the two groups. Logistic regression was performed to relate the vessel wall characteristics to the initial hemorrhage in MMD patients. Patients in hemorrhagic group were followed up after surgery to evaluate the relationship between vessel wall characteristics and recurrent hemorrhage. RESULTS: A total of 507 MMD patients including 79 hemorrhagic and 428 non-hemorrhagic MMD patients were recruited in the study. We found that hemorrhagic group had more patients with vessel wall enhancements (40.5% vs. 25.7%, p = 0.009) and more eccentric enhanced lesions (17.7% vs. 6.5%, p = 0.001) compared to those in non-hemorrhage group and vessel wall enhancements were independently associated with ipsilateral initial hemorrhage after adjusted for clinical factors (OR = 1.99, CI 1.20-3.28, p = 0.007). Furthermore, three recurrent intracranial hemorrhagic episodes in the present study were all observed in MMD patients with vessel wall enhancement during the long-term follow-up after surgery. CONCLUSIONS: Wall enhancement of intracranial vessels was significantly associated with intracranial hemorrhage in MMD patients. Our findings suggest that vessel wall enhancement may serve as a marker of intracranial hemorrhage.

Chalcopyrite is a crucial contributor causing acid mine drainage (AMD). Silver and pyrite are commonly co-existed with chalcopyrite, and can significantly affect the copper release from chalcopyrite bio-dissolution process. However, the combined effect of them on chalcopyrite bio-dissolution has not been illustrated up to now. To fill this knowledge gap, the combined effect of silver and pyrite on chalcopyrite dissolution with Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans was investigated in this study. The copper extraction reached the maximum value (62.3 ± 0.1%) with the presence of silver and pyrite, which was 43.8 ± 0.1% higher than the control group (without addition). This suggested more copper ions and acids were released under this circumstance. According to bio-dissolution results, SEM, XRD and XPS analyses, the promotion effect of silver and pyrite on chalcopyrite bio-dissolution was mainly attributed to the increase of ferric ions in solution and the reduction of passivation layer (Sn2-/S0) on chalcopyrite surface. The investigation into the bio-dissolution of chalcopyrite is important for controlling the generation of copper ions and acids. Silver or pyrite bearing chalcopyrite should be carefully treated to avoid the pollution of heavy metal copper and acid in the mining environment.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) play a crucial role in enhancing the acquisition of immobile nutrients, particularly phosphorus. However, because nitrogen (N) is more mobile in the soil solution and easier to access by plants roots, the role of AMF in enhancing N acquisition is regarded as less important for host plants. Because AMF have a substantial N demand, competition for N between AMF and plants particularly under low N condition is possible. Thus, it is necessary to know whether or not AMF affect N uptake of plants and thereby affect plant growth under field conditions. We conducted a 2-year field trial and pot experiments in a greenhouse by using benomyl to suppress colonization of maize roots by indigenous AMF at both low and high N application rates. Benomyl reduced mycorrhizal colonization of maize plants in all experiments. Benomyl-treated maize had a higher shoot N concentration and content and produced more grain under field conditions. Greenhouse pot experiments showed that benomyl also enhanced maize growth and N concentration and N content when the soil was not sterilized, but had no effect on maize biomass and N content when the soil was sterilized but a microbial wash added, providing evidence that increased plant performance is at least partly caused by direct effects of benomyl on AMF. We conclude that AMF can reduce N acquisition and thereby reduce grain yield of maize in N-limiting soils.
