This study explores the impact of anthropogenic land use changes on the macroinvertebrate community structure in the streams of the Cangshan Mountains. Through field collections of macroinvertebrates, measurement of water environments, and delineation of riparian zone land use in eight streams, we analyzed the relationship between land use types, stream water environments, and macroinvertebrate diversities. The results demonstrate urban land use type and water temperature are the key environmental factors driving the differences in macroinvertebrate communities up-, mid-, and downstream. The disturbed streams had lower aquatic biodiversity than those in their natural state, showing a decrease in disturbance-sensitive aquatic insect taxa and a more similar community structure. In the natural woodland area, species distributions may be constrained by watershed segmentation and present more complex community characteristics.

As the only "tropical base of agricultural production" in China, Hainan lsland is vigorously developing high-value agriculture and is becoming the province with the highest proportion of cash crops. However, this intensive farming with large nutrient inputs has caused cropland degradation, nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) overloads and water pollution, which have been reversed to initiate the construction of free trade ports. Here, we systematically review the status, driving factors, and environmental impacts of cropland degradation and nutrient overload with quantified evaluations and compared with other global tropics. Over the last 30 years, the soil pH in Hainan decreased by 0.3 units, and the soil organic carbon (SOC) decreased by 20%. This soil degradation has consequently aggravated nutrient losses, caused low use efficiency, and has required farmers add additional large nutrient to maintain harvests. P overuse is more serious than N overuse in Hainan due to the misuse of high P content compound fertilizers. The current N and P usage densities were 4% and 66% higher than the national average per crop season, i.e., 301 kg N ha-1 and 98 kg P ha-1, respectively, and the application rates were even higher for vegetables, i.e., 43% and 115% higher than the national average for vegetables. Consequently, water quality degradation occurred. The nutrient contents of several estuaries have exceeded the Class III standards. Potential improvement strategies are proposed: (i) Organic materials must be recycled to curb the declines in SOC and pH, and more benefits would be obtained by together use of biochar. (ii) Nutrient quotas must be implemented to balance nutrient budgets and reduce excessive surpluses and losses. (iii) The service functions of ecological protection zones for water and soil conservation must be strengthened. These strategies also apply to other global tropics that face similar challenges of soil and ecological degradation.

The species-area relationship (SAR) and its mechanisms regarding microbes are not as clear as those of plants and animals; this may result from the impact of sampling effects and the confusion between SAR and distance attenuation. We hypothesize that we can find more accurate microbial SAR curve, after removing these two factors. In this study, 27 leaves of three horticultural plants were selected as island models, and microbial biodiversity assessment was done with HTS (high-throughput sequencing). The separate and small systems using leaves as islands allow us to conduct a comprehensive survey of the microbial biodiversity of the leaves, without disturbance from sampling effects and distance attenuation effects. Interestingly, we did not find microbial SAR in those 27 leaves (also not found in evergreen trees Magnolia grandiflora and Eriobotrya japonica), but we did find significant microbial SAR in deciduous tree Ficus altissima. No significant differences were found between the different trees at the alpha diversity level of microbial biodiversity, but quite different on beta diversity. The results of beta diversity partition showed that F. altissima had the highest similarity of the microbial community among the leaves compared to those of M. grandiflora and E. japonica. Since leaf genesis in deciduous plants is more simultaneous than in evergreen plants; the result suggested that inconsistent historical background of leaf islands may mask microbial SAR. Thus, intensive sampling and consistent historical background are important for understanding microbial SAR.

Small waterbodies are a unique aquatic ecosystem with an increasing recognition for their important role in maintaining regional biodiversity and delivering ecosystem services. However, small waterbodies in Northwest Yunnan, one of the most concerned global biodiversity hot-spots, remain largely unknown. Here, we investigated the community structure of crustacean zooplankton and their relationships with limnological, morphometric and spatial variables in the highland small waterbodies in Northwest Yunnan in both the dry (October 2015) and rainy (June 2016) seasons. A total of 38 species of crustacean zooplankton were identified in our study, which is significantly higher than many other reported waterbodies in the Yunnan-Guizhou plateau as well as in the Yangtze River basin. This suggests that the highland small waterbodies are critical in maintaining regional zooplankton diversity in Northwest Yunnan. Meanwhile, we found limnological variables could explain most variation of crustacean zooplankton community, comparing to the morphometric and spatial variables in both the rainy and dry seasons. Our study revealed the diversity and community structure of crustacean zooplankton in the highland small waterbodies in Northwest Yunnan and highlighted the importance of small waterbodies in maintaining regional biodiversity.

Mountain freshwater ecosystems are threatened all over the world by a range of human-induced stresses, ensuing in a rapid loss of habitats and species diversity. Many macroinvertebrates are reactive to habitat disturbance, and mayflies (Ephemeroptera) are amongst the most sensitive groups. Despite they are susceptible to environmental deviation, knowledge concerning their species richness and diversity is still unknown in remote areas. The objectives of this study were to (1) investigate the mayfly species assemblage and community composition along different mountain streams and assess potential differences, and (2) identify the environmental variation and its influence on the structure of mayfly communities within such freshwater systems. We collected biological and environmental data from 35 sites situated along elevation gradients in the Baima Snow Mountain, northwest Yunnan, China. Multivariate analyses were performed on the environmental variables and the mayfly species composition, as well as on richness and diversity indices. We found that the community composition of mayflies was different across all three watercourses. Among the 18 Ephemeroptera taxa identified, Baetis sp. and Baetiella marginata were highly dominant, accounting for over 50% of the dissimilarity of each stream. In terms of species assemblages, almost all sites in the Yeri stream hosted good-quality habitats for several mayfly species, as reflected by the highest species richness. The Benzilan stream followed, whereas the Sharong stream showed relatively low mayfly assemblage. This variation was explained by the high environmental heterogeneity between the three watercourses. In particular, the RDA model revealed that among the different environmental factors analyzed, altitude, conductivity, total dissolved solids, water temperature, dissolved silicon, and pH explained most of the variation in species composition. Moreover, the altitude alone explained 17.74% of the variation, and in-depth analysis confirmed its significant effect on diversity indices. Further research should focus on evaluating the scale of threats to this important group of insects in the mountain freshwater ecosystem, particularly the impact of human-induced disturbances such as land use/landcover alterations.

The altitudinal distribution of biodiversity in alpine ecosystems has captured academic attention, especially in streams because of their sensitivity to climate change. In the past years, research mainly focused on understanding the role played by alpine streams' internal factors such as aquatic environmental variables, as well as physical and hydrological conditions, on the shaping of benthic macroinvertebrate communities. More recently, external factors such as terrestrial environments were included in analyses worldwide. In particular, the inherent properties constituting the ecological niche of specific species were considered as factors regulating dispersal and influencing community construction. The objective of this study was to reveal the distribution pattern and the driving factors regulating aquatic biodiversity in alpine streams. We hypothesized that the altitudinal distribution of aquatic macroinvertebrates could be explained by the interaction of the aquatic environment with both species' ecological niche and the terrestrial environment surrounding their habitat, and that rare species display a more pronounced pattern than widespread dominant species. To test these hypotheses, samples were collected from two alpine streams situated on opposite slopes of Biluo Snow Mountain in Yunnan Province, China. Results of statistical analyses showed poor explanatory power from aquatic environmental factors, while the differences in vegetation type and the ecological niche of the species played an important role in determining the distribution pattern of aquatic biodiversity. Furthermore, we found that the altitudinal distribution pattern of aquatic biodiversity exhibits a bimodal type, with rare species fitting the bimodal peaks. These findings call for a better inclusion and further investigation on the effects of the terrestrial environment on aquatic ecosystems.

As a primary food crop, maize is widely grown around the world. However, the deficiency of essential amino acids, such as lysine, tryptophan, and methionine, results in poor nutritional quality of maize. In addition, the protein concentration of maize declines with the increase in yield, which further reduces the nutritional quality. Here, the photosynthesis of leaves, grain amino acid composition, and stoichiometry of N and S are explored. The results show that N and S maintained the redox balance by increasing the content of glutathione in maize leaves, thereby enhancing the photosynthetic rate and maize yield. Simultaneously, the synergy of N and S increased the grain protein concentration and promoted amino acid balance by increasing the cysteine concentration in maize grains. The maize yield, grain protein concentration, and concentration of essential amino acids, such as lysine, tryptophan, and methionine, could be simultaneously increased in the N:S ratio range of 11.0 to 12.0. Overall, the synergy of N and S simultaneously improved the maize yield and nutritional quality by regulating the redox balance of maize leaves and the amino acids balance of grains, which provides a new theoretical basis and practical method for sustainable production of maize.

Agricultural production in China is facing great challenges to ensure food security and cleaner environment; further improvements are therefore required in crop nutrient management to increase grain yield and nutrient use efficiency while synchronously reducing environmental pollution. In this study, a total of 87 site-years of on-farm experiments were conducted from 2013 to 2018 in the main agro-ecological areas in Northeast China, to evaluate the agronomic and environmental benefits of nutrient expert (NE) system in maize and rice production. Results showed that NE had general and significant advantages in agronomic and environmental benefits relative to FP, by dramatically reducing N and P fertilizer inputs and optimizing nutrient management. As compared to FP, on average, NE increased grain yield by 8.4% and 6.6% significantly higher grain yield and N uptake for maize, respectively, while it obtained equal yield performance and 3.0% higher N uptake for rice, and consequently resulted in significantly higher N use efficiency. Environmental effects assessment showed that NE reduced substantially reactive N losses and greenhouse gas emissions by 46.9% and 37.2% for maize, respectively, and 10.1% and 6.6% for rice, respectively. Regression analysis indicated that NE effectively improved N use efficiency and mitigated environmental pollution was mainly associated with increasing plant N uptake and reduced N surplus. As compared to fertilization recommendation based on soil testing, NE system showed higher N use efficiency and better environmental benefits for both maize and rice. In conclusion, our results demonstrated that NE system is a feasible and promising approach to optimize crop nutrient management and promote cleaner agricultural production in Northeast China.

BACKGROUND: Understanding the patterns of species richness across elevational gradients is a key concept for contemporary research in ecology and evolution, and critical to understanding large-scale trends in biodiversity, global change and conservation. However, patterns of elevational species richness between taxonomic groups, regions and latitudes are inconsistent, so that various, sometimes conflicting hypotheses exist. Several scholars have pointed out that research on elevational distribution patterns is often biased by the sampling design employed. To test this hypothesis, we analyzed species richness of Nematode-Trapping Fungi (NTF) across an elevation gradient at two mountainous sites in western Yunnan Province, P.R. China. We tested for potential differences in the results when using different sampling designs. RESULTS: A total of 3 genera, 17 species, 222 strains of NTF were isolated and identified from Gaoligongshan and Cangshan. Species accumulation curves for both sites and sampling modes had acceptable leveling, demonstrating sufficient sampling effort. At Gaoligongshan, the elevation distribution patterns of NTF were different under two sampling patterns. When reducing the analyzed altitude range in Gaoligongshan, the elevation distribution pattern of the NTF changed. A similar elevation distribution pattern was observed in Cangshan when testing the same altitude range. In general, when treating the same dataset using different sampling designs, the resulting distribution patterns of species richness and occurrence frequencies were clearly different. Moreover, after removal of the samples located within lower-altitude zones affected by anthropogenic interferences, the distribution pattern of NTF in the two sites tended to become uniform. CONCLUSION: The sampling design, and in particular the elevation interval between plots, has a significant effect on the assessment of species distribution in mountainous regions. Other factors such as human activities and the multi-dimensionality of biodiversity also contribute to result biases. It is recommended that sampling design is given careful consideration in future studies on the elevational gradients of species richness, using stratified approaches according to the most relevant factors.

BACKGROUND: The gut microbiota plays an important role in host immunity and metabolic homeostasis. Although analyses of gut microbiotas have been used to assess host health and foster disease prevention and treatment, no comparative comprehensive study, assessing gut microbiotas among several species of farmed snake, is yet available. In this study, we characterized and compared the gut microbiotas of four species of farmed snakes (Naja atra, Ptyas mucosa, Elaphe carinata, and Deinagkistrodon acutus) using high-throughput sequencing of the 16S rDNA gene in southern China and tested whether there was a relationship between gut microbiotal composition and host species. RESULTS: A total of 629 operational taxonomic units across 22 samples were detected. The five most abundant phyla were Bacteroidetes, Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, Fusobacteria, and Actinobacteria, while the five most abundant genera were Bacteroides, Cetobacterium, Clostridium, Plesiomonas, and Paeniclostridium. This was the first report of the dominance of Fusobacteria and Cetobacterium in the snake gut. Our phylogenetic analysis recovered a relatively close relationship between Fusobacteria and Bacteroidetes. Alpha diversity analysis indicated that species richness and diversity were highest in the gut microbiota of D. acutus and lowest in that of E. carinata. Significant differences in alpha diversity were detected among the four farmed snake species. The gut microbiotas of conspecifics were more similar to each other than to those of heterospecifics. CONCLUSION: This study provides the first comparative study of gut microbiotas among several species of farmed snakes, and provides valuable data for the management of farmed snakes. In farmed snakes, host species affected the species composition and diversity of the gut microbiota.

A microcosm experiment was conducted to compare how different chelating agents enhance the phytoextraction of lead (Pb) by Mirabilis jalapa from an artificially Pb-contaminated soil. Chelating agents used included ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA), nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA), ethylene diamine disuccinic acid (EDDS), oxalic acid, humic acid, citric acid and tartaric acid, with concentrations ranging from 0 to 2000 mg/kg. Results show that with increasing concentrations of chelating agents, the concentrations, bioaccumulation coefficients, and translocation factors of Pb in M. jalapa gradually increased. Of all chelating agents used, the concentrations, bioaccumulation coefficients and translocation factors of Pb in M. jalapa were higher for EDTA and NTA than for the other chelating agents. Given the potential environmental risks of EDTA, we recommend NTA be used as a suitable chelating agent to increase the phytoremediation of Pb-contaminated soil with M. jalapa.

Stream metacommunities are structured by a combination of local (environmental filtering) and regional (dispersal) processes. The unique characters of high mountain streams could potentially determine metacommunity structuring, which is currently poorly understood. Aiming at understanding how these characters influenced metacommunity structuring, we explored the relative importance of local environmental conditions and various dispersal processes, including through geographical (overland), topographical (across mountain barriers) and network (along flow direction) pathways in shaping benthic diatom communities. From a trait perspective, diatoms were categorized into high-profile, low-profile and motile guild to examine the roles of functional traits. Our results indicated that both environmental filtering and dispersal processes influenced metacommunity structuring, with dispersal contributing more than environmental processes. Among the three pathways, stream corridors were primary pathway. Deconstructive analysis suggested different responses to environmental and spatial factors for each of three ecological guilds. However, regardless of traits, dispersal among streams was limited by mountain barriers, while dispersal along stream was promoted by rushing flow in high mountain stream. Our results highlighted that directional processes had prevailing effects on metacommunity structuring in high mountain streams. Flow directionality, mountain barriers and ecological guilds contributed to a better understanding of the roles that mountains played in structuring metacommunity.

As an important methyltransferase, DNMT1 plays a key role in DNA methylation that is essential for normal spermatogenesis, which suggests that it may be involved in male infertility with spermatogenesis impairment. To explore the relationship between DNMT1 and spermatogenesis impairment, polymorphic distributions of single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) rs16999593, rs2228612 and rs2228611 in DNMT1 were investigated in 342 infertile patients with idiopathic azoospermia or oligospermia and 232 fertile controls in a Chinese population. As a result, no significant differences in allele and genotype frequencies of the three SNP between total patients and controls were observed. However, after stratifying the patients, significant differences in allele and genotype frequencies were detected between oligospermia subgroup and control group. The frequencies of rs16999593 allele A (83.6% versus 77.6%, P=0.033) and genotype AA (69.2% versus 59.0%, P=0.037) and SNP rs2228611 genotype AA (18.4% versus 9.9%, P=0.016) in patients with oligospermia were significantly higher than those in control group. These findings suggest that the polymorphism in DNMT1 might be associated with oligospermia and could modify the susceptibility of oligospermia.

KIT/KITLG signaling system is crucial for spermatogenesis, which suggests that KIT and KITLG genes may be involved in spermatogenesis impairment and male infertility. To explore the possible association of KIT and KITLG genes with male infertility having spermatogenesis impairment, polymorphism distributions of SNP rs3819392 in KIT gene as well as rs995030 and rs4474514 in KITLG gene were investigated in 372 patients with idiopathic azoospermia or oligospermia and 205 fertile controls. As a result, the significant differences in polymorphism distributions of SNP rs3819392 in KIT gene and rs4474514 in KITLG gene were observed between the patients with oligospermia and controls. The frequencies of allele G (94.2% versus 90.0% p = 0.022) and genotype GG (89.2% versus 82.0% p = 0.042) in patients with oligospermia were significantly higher than those in controls at rs3819392 locus in KIT gene. In addition, the genotype CC of rs4474514 in KITLG (8.2% versus 3.4%, p = 0.034) also significantly increased in oligospermic patients in comparison to controls. These findings indicated that SNP rs3819392 in KIT gene and rs4474514 in KITLG gene may be associated with oligospermia, suggesting that polymorphism of KIT and KITLG genes may play a role in oligospermia.

In testis, eNOS is responsible for synthesis of nitric oxide (NO) which is an essential gas message regulator in spermatogenesis, suggesting that eNOS gene plays a role in normal spermatogenesis and the genetic variants of eNOS gene may be potential genetic risk factors of spermatogenesis impairment. In this study, the polymorphic distributions of three common polymorphism loci including T-786C, 4A4B and G894T in eNOS gene were investigated in 355 Chinese infertile patients with azoospermia or oligozoospermia and 246 healthy fertile men and a meta-analysis was carried in order to explore the possible relationship between the three loci of eNOS gene and male infertility with spermatogenesis impairment. As a result, allele -786C of T-786C (11.4% versus 6.5%, p = 0.004) and 4A of 4A4B (11.0% versus 6.3%, p = 0.005) as well as genotype TC of T-786C (22.8% versus 13.0%, p = 0.002) and AB of 4A4B (18% versus 11%, p = 0.015) were significantly associated with idiopathic male infertility. The haplotypes T-4A-G (7.4% versus 4.1%, p = 0.015) and C-4B-G (7.6% versus 4.4%, p = 0.028) could increase the susceptibility to male infertility, whereas haplotype T-4B-G (67.0% versus 75.2%, p = 0.002) might be a protective factor for male infertility. The results of meta-analysis revealed that the polymorphism of T-786C was associated with male infertility. These findings suggested that the variants of eNOS gene may modify the susceptibility to male infertility with impaired spermatogenesis.

The deletion polymorphisms of the glutathione S-transferase M1 (GSTM1) and glutathione S-transferase T1 (GSTT1) genes were considered as candidates for genetic susceptibility factors of male infertility. Previous studies concerning the relationship between the null genotype of the two genes and male infertility have been reported in recent years. However, the results remain elusive. A meta-analysis was performed to estimate the relationship between the deletion polymorphism of the GSTM1 or GSTT1 gene, and male infertility in this study. Sixteen studies concerning the GSTM1 gene, including 2174 cases and 1861 controls, and 13 case-control studies on the GSTT1 gene with a total number of 1992 cases and 1617 controls were processed. The results showed that the null genotype of the GSTM1 gene was associated with male infertility in the overall populations (P=0.003, OR=1.40, 95%CI=1.12-1.75), especially in Caucasian (P=0.012, OR=1.50, 95%CI=1.09-2.07) as well as Chinese (P=0.001, OR=1.55, 95%CI=1.19-2.03). The null genotype of the GSTT1 gene was strongly related to male infertility only in Chinese (P=0.000, OR=1.70, 95%CI=1.34-2.14). These results indicated that the null genotype of the GSTM1 gene might contribute to the susceptibility of male infertility, whereas the null genotype of the GSTT1 gene may be a genetic susceptibility factor of male infertility for the Chinese.

Glutathione-S-transferases (GSTs) play a protective role during spermatogenesis and GST genes may be involved in impaired spermatogenesis. A case-control study was performed to explore the association of genes GSTM1 and GSTT1, two members of GST gene family, with spermatogenesis impairment. The deletion polymorphism distribution of genes GSTM1 and GSTT1 was investigated in 353 patients with azoospermia or oligospermia and 201 fertile controls in Chinese population using multiplex PCR. As a result, the frequencies of null genotype of genes GSTM1 (67.4% versus 57.7%, p = 0.022, OR = 1.516, 95% CI = 1.001-2.168) and GSTT1 (61.8% versus 46.8%, p = 0.001, OR = 1.838, 95% CI = 1.295-2.610) in patients were significantly higher than those in controls. After stratifying patients, the frequencies of null genotype of gene GSTM1 in oligospermia (68.3% versus 57.7%, p = 0.027, OR = 1.580, 95% CI = 1.051-2.375) and GSTT1 in azoospermia (66.9% versus 46.8%, p < 0.001, OR = 2.299, 95% CI = 1.484-3.562) as well as oligospermia (57.9% versus 46.8%, p = 0.025, OR = 1.567, 95% CI = 1.057-2.322) were still significantly higher compared with controls. The results suggested that null genotypes of GSTM1 and GSTT1 are associated with spermatogenesis impairment and may contribute to susceptibility to spermatogenesis impairment and male infertility in Chinese population.
