RESUMO

BRD4 protein plays a pivotal role in cell cycle regulation and differentiation. Disrupting the activity of BRD4 has emerged as a promising strategy for inhibiting the growth and proliferation of cancer cells. Herein, we introduced a BRD4-targeting photothermal agent for controlled protein degradation, aiming to enhance low-temperature photothermal therapy (PTT) for cancer treatment. By incorporating a BRD4 protein inhibitor into a cyanine dye scaffold, the photothermal agent specifically bond to the bromodomain of BRD4. Upon low power density laser irradiation, the agent induced protein degradation, directly destroying the BRD4 structure and inhibiting its transcriptional regulatory function. This strategy not only prolonged the retention time of the photothermal agent in cancer cells but also confined the targeted protein degradation process solely to the tumor tissue, minimizing side effects on normal tissues through the aid of exogenous signals. This work established a simple and feasible platform for future PTT agent design in clinical cancer treatment.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To assess the real-world efficacy and safety of flumatinib as first-line and post-line treatments for chronic myeloid leukemia in the chronic phase (CML-CP). RESULTS: Among 141 patients receiving flumatinib as first-line and post-line treatment, the 12-month major molecular response (MMR) rates were 69.4% and 67.6%, respectively. The median time to response was 6 and 10.5 months, respectively. In post-line treatment, the early molecular response (EMR) of flumatinib as second-line is significantly superior to that of third-line treatment (3-month EMR rate: 79.2% vs. 39.3%, P<0.001; 3-month MMR rate: 45.8% vs. 21.4%, P=0.033). Contrastively, patients who switched to flumatinib due to intolerance had significantly higher MMR rates at 3, 6, and 12 months compared to patients who switched due to inadequate response (60.6% vs. 24.2%, P=0.003; 66.7% vs. 36.0%, P=0.027; 84.2% vs. 50.0%, P=0.038). Premature drug discontinuation was observed in 28.4% of the patients. Grades 3-4 hematologic adverse events (AEs) were identified as independent risk factors for premature drug discontinuation. Patients who discontinued treatment and those who previously received only imatinib therapy had a poorer molecular response and failure-free survival. CONCLUSIONS: Flumatinib demonstrates favorable efficacy and safety. Treatment discontinuation can result in a poorer molecular response and long-term prognosis.

RESUMO

Objectives. Currently, numerous studies have focused on testing or modeling to evaluate the safe service life of thermal protective clothing after thermal aging, reducing the risk to occupational personnel. However, testing will render the garment unsuitable for subsequent use and a series of input parameters for modeling are not readily available. In this study, a novel image recognition strategy was proposed to discriminate the mechanical strength of thermal protective fabric after thermal aging based on transfer learning. Methods. Data augmentation was used to overcome the shortcoming of insufficient training samples. Four pre-trained models were used to explore their performance in three sample classification modes. Results. The experimental results show that the VGG-19 model achieves the best performance in the three-classification mode (accuracy = 91%). The model was more accurate in identifying fabric samples in the early and late stages of strength decline. For fabric samples in the middle stage of strength decline, the three-classification mode was better than the four-classification and six-classification modes. Conclusions. The findings provide novel insights into the image-based mechanical strength evaluation of thermal protective fabrics after aging.

RESUMO

The water oxidation reaction, a crucial process for solar energy conversion, has garnered significant research attention. Achieving efficient energy conversion requires the development of cost-effective and durable water oxidation catalysts. To design effective catalysts, it is essential to have a fundamental understanding of the reaction mechanisms. This review presents a comprehensive overview of recent advancements in the understanding of the mechanisms of water oxidation using transition metal-based heterogeneous electrocatalysts, including Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, and Cu-based catalysts. It highlights the catalytic mechanisms of different transition metals and emphasizes the importance of monitoring of key intermediates to explore the reaction pathway. In addition, advanced techniques for physical characterization of water oxidation intermediates are also introduced, for the purpose of providing information for establishing reliable methodologies in water oxidation research. The study of transition metal-based water oxidation electrocatalysts is instrumental in providing novel insights into understanding both natural and artificial energy conversion processes.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To understand the health status, influencing factors and spatial distribution of the Chinese floating population and to evaluate the health equity of the floating population. METHODS: All the data were collected from the 2017 Migrant Population Dynamic Monitoring Survey in China, binary Logistic regression was used to analyze the factors that might affect the health of the floating population, and the concentration index method was used to evaluate the health equity of the floating population. Spatial autocorrelation analyses the spatial aggregation of health status and health equity. RESULTS: The unhealthy rate of the floating population in China was 2.71%. Age and gender show a statistically significant impact on self-rated health; that is, as age increases, the self-rated health of the migrant population gradually deteriorates, and women are more likely to think that they are unhealthy. Fairness analysis shows that the concentration index of the floating population is 0.021 7, the urban household registration floating population is 0.021 6, and the rural household registration floating population is 0.021 9. It is shown that the fairness of the health status of the floating population is biased towards the high-income class, and the rural household registration floating population' s health unfairness is greater than that of the urban household registration migration population. Moreover, Moran' s i=0.211 for self-rated health and Moran' s i=0.291 for the unhealthy rate indicate that self-rated health has a spatial aggregation trend. Moran' s i=0.136 showed the characteristics of spatial clustering, and the two-week prevalence fairness of the floating population was mainly in the northern and southeastern coastal areas. CONCLUSION: In general, the health status of the floating population in China is relatively good. The main influencing factors of health included gender and age. The central tendency of health inequity is reflected in the southeast coastal and northern regions, which are characterized by poverty. Attention to spatial aggregation is not only helpful to analyze the reasons of floating population, but also to study the health differences between different regions and health-related factors, to improve the overall health level of the whole population.

RESUMO

Deep cascaded networks have been extensively studied and applied to accelerate Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and have shown promising results. Most existing works employ a large cascading number for the sake of superior performances. However, due to the lack of proper guidance, the reconstruction performance can easily reach a plateau and even face degradation if simply increasing the cascading number. In this paper, we aim to boost the reconstruction performance from a novel perspective by proposing a parallel architecture called DIRECTION that fully exploits the guiding value of the reconstruction residual of each subnetwork. Specifically, we introduce a novel Reconstruction Residual-Based Feature Modulation Mechanism (RRFMM) which utilizes the reconstruction residual of the previous subnetwork to guide the next subnetwork at the feature level. To achieve this, a Residual Attention Modulation Block (RAMB) is proposed to generate attention maps using multi-scale residual features to modulate the image features of the corresponding scales. Equipped with this strategy, each subnetwork within the cascaded network possesses its unique optimization objective and emphasis rather than blindly updating its parameters. To further boost the performance, we introduce the Cross-Stage Feature Reuse Connection (CSFRC) and the Reconstruction Dense Connection (RDC), which can reduce information loss and enhance representative ability. We conduct sufficient experiments and evaluate our method on the fastMRI knee dataset using multiple subsampling masks. Comprehensive experimental results show that our method can markedly boost the performance of cascaded networks and significantly outperforms other compared state-of-the-art methods quantitatively and qualitatively.

RESUMO

Benthic microbial communities play a crucial role in maintaining the stability and function of estuarine ecosystems. However, their organization and response to multiple stresses in severely disturbed coastal areas remains to be elucidated. In this study, we revealed the presence of contrasting benthic bacterial and fungal communities in the Liaohe (LH) and Yalujiang (YLJ) estuaries, which are located at similar latitudes and are characterized by similar climates but are subjected to different levels of anthropogenic pressure. The results showed that Firmicutes and Chloroflexi were more abundant in LH, which reflected the influence of anthropogenic pressure in this area. Functional analyses indicated that the functional genes involved in the generation of precursor metabolites and energy pathways were more enriched in the LH community, while genes regulating degradation/utilization/assimilation processes were more enriched in the YLJ community. Distance-dependent similarity analysis showed that the bacterial community in LH was more affected by environmental changes, while that in YLJ was more influenced by geographic dispersion. In contrast, no significant distance-dependent similarity was found for the fungal communities in the two areas. In addition, the network analysis showed that the bacterial-fungal network in YLJ was more complex and stable than that in the LH. Our results highlight the important roles of environmental heterogeneity in controlling microbial community composition, biogeographic patterns, and co-occurrence networks. These findings fill knowledge gaps in the understanding of the different response patterns of benthic communities under varying anthropogenic pressures.

RESUMO

Atopic dermatitis (AD) may sometimes be comorbid with alopecia areata (AA). However, traditional treatments for AA show limited efficacy. New treatment options, such as dupilumab and Janus kinase inhibitors, have proven efficacy in addressing both AD and AA. This article highlights the challenging case of a 12-year-old boy experiencing severe refractory AD and comorbid AA treated with oral abrocitinib after dupilumab failure with 1-year follow-up. After 3 months of treatment, his skin manifestations improved and the hair completely regenerated. No adverse reactions were observed during the 1-year follow-up period. This case provides evidence of the efficacy and safety of using abrocitinib to treat pediatric patients with both AD and AA.

RESUMO

Background: Breast cancer (BC) is one of the most common malignancies worldwide, and its development is affected in various ways by the tumor microenvironment (TME). Tumor-derived mesenchymal progenitor cells (MPCs), as the most important components of the TME, participate in the proliferation and metastasis of BC in several ways. In this study, we aimed to characterize the genes associated with tumor-derived MPCs and determine their effects on BC cells. Methods: Tumor-derived MPCs and normal breast tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) were isolated from tissues specimens of patients with BC. We conducted culture and passage, phenotype identification, proliferation and migration detection, inflammatory factor release detection, and other experiments on isolated MPCs from tumors and MSCs from normal breast tissues. Three paired tumor-derived MPCs and normal breast tissue-derived MSCs were then subjected to transcriptome analysis to determine the expression profiles of the relevant genes, and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) was used to further confirm gene expression. Subsequently, the overexpression plasmids were transfected into tumor-derived MPCs, and the expression of various inflammatory factors of tumor-derived MPCs and their proliferation were characterized with a cell viability test reagent (Cell Counting Kit 8). Subsequently, the transfected tumor-derived MPCs were cocultured with BC cells using a conditioned medium coculture method to clarify the role of tumor-derived MSCs in BC. Results: Tumor-derived MPCs expressed stem cell characteristics including CD105, CD90, and CD73 and exhibited adipogenic and osteogenic differentiation in vitro. The proliferation of tumor-derived MPCs was significantly lower than that of normal breast tissue-derived MSCs, and the invasive metastatic ability was comparable; however, MPCs were found to release inflammatory factors such as interleukin 6 (IL-6) and transforming growth factor ß (TGF-ß). Transcriptome analysis showed that stomatin (STOM), collagen and calcium binding EGF domains 1 (CCBE1), and laminin subunit alpha 5 (LAMA5) were significantly upregulated in tumor-derived MPCs. Among them, STOM was highly expressed in tumor-derived MPCs, which mediated the slow proliferation of MPCs and promoted the proliferation of BC cells. Conclusions: STOM, CCBE1, and LAMA5 were highly expressed in tumor-derived MPCs, with STOM being found to retard the proliferation of MPCs but promote the proliferation of BC cells. There findings present new possibilities in targeted microenvironmental therapy for BC.

RESUMO

Background: Anxiety disorders are the most common psychiatric problems, affecting approximately 1 in 12 children and 1 in 4 adolescents. Understanding the incidence, burden and correlated risks of anxiety disorders among children and adolescents can help identify areas of success, stagnation and emerging threats, thereby facilitating effective improvement strategies. Aims: To estimate the incidence and burden trends of anxiety disorders in children and adolescents from 1990 to 2019 in 204 countries and compare the incidence and disease burden in different countries. To examine the association between anxiety disorders and social indicators (healthcare access and quality of life). Methods: Data were obtained from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019. The age-standardised incidence rates (ASIRs) and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) were reported to assess the burden of anxiety disorders, and the estimated annual percentage change was calculated to quantify the temporal trends. Pearson's correlation was used to investigate country-level risk factors for incidence and DALYs. Results: Globally, there were 932 million incident cases of anxiety disorders in children and adolescents, 739.29 per 100 000 ASIRs and 380.62 million DALYs in 2019. From 1990 to 2019, the estimated annual percentage change of incidence of anxiety disorders decreased by 2.2%. Significant variations were observed in the age-standardised burden rate and the changing trend of anxiety disorders among countries. Portugal reported the highest ASIR of anxiety disorders, while Mexico had the largest increase rate of ASIR. In 2019, Portugal reported the highest number of DALYs (1001.71 million), and India (212.09 million) reported the lowest number of DALYs. The burden of anxiety disorders was positively correlated with the average number of psychiatrists, psychologists and nurses in the mental health sector (per 100 000), and quality of life and the correlation coefficients were 0.58, 0.67, 0.43 and 0.53, respectively. Conclusions: The incidence and global burden of anxiety disorders in adolescents have continued to decrease over the past 30 years. However, the incidence and disease burden in developed countries are still increasing steadily. Policymakers should design and implement mental health strategies for adolescents based on their specific developmental status, as well as the cultural and regional characteristics of each country.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Progestin, commonly used in oral contraception and preventing preterm birth, elicits various off-target side effects on brain and gastrointestinal (GI) functions, yet the precise mechanisms remain elusive. This study aims to probe progestin's impact on GI function and anxiety-like behaviors in female mice. METHODS: Colon stem cells were utilized to explore the mechanism underlying progestin 17-hydroxyprogesterone caproate (17-OHPC)-mediated suppression of claudin-1 (CLDN1), crucial for epithelial integrity. Chromatin immunoprecipitation and luciferase assays identified potential progestin-response elements on the CLDN1 promoter, with subsequent assessment of oxidative stress and pro-inflammatory cytokine release. Manipulation of vitamin D receptor (VDR) or estrogen receptor ß (ERß) expression elucidated their roles in 17-OHPC-mediated effects. Intestine-specific VDR deficient mice were generated to evaluate 17-OHPC's impact on GI dysfunction and anxiety-like behaviors in female mice. Additionally, gene expression was analyzed in various brain regions, including the amygdala, hypothalamus, and hippocampus. RESULTS: Exposure to 17-OHPC suppressed CLDN1 expression via epigenetic modifications and VDR dissociation from the CLDN1 promoter. Furthermore, 17-OHPC intensified oxidative stress and proinflammatory cytokine release. VDR knockdown partly mimicked, while overexpression of either VDR or ERß partly restored 17-OHPC-mediated effects. Intestinal VDR deficiency partly mirrored 17-OHPC-induced GI dysfunction, with minimal impact on 17-OHPC-mediated anxiety-like behaviors. CONCLUSIONS: 17-OHPC suppresses CLDN1 expression through VDR, contributing to GI dysfunction in female mice, distinct from 17-OHPC-induced anxiety-like behaviors. This study reveals a new mechanism and potential negative impact of progestin exposure on the gastrointestinal tract, alongside inducing anxiety-like behaviors in female mice.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The first 1000 days of life, encompassing pregnancy and the first 2 years after birth, represent a critical period for human health development. Despite this significance, there has been limited research into the associations between mixed exposure to air pollutants during this period and the development of asthma/wheezing in children. Furthermore, the finer sensitivity window of exposure during this crucial developmental phase remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to assess the relationships between prenatal and postnatal exposures to various ambient air pollutants (particulate matter 2.5 [PM2.5], carbon monoxide [CO], sulfur dioxide [SO2], nitrogen dioxide [NO2], and ozone [O3]) and the incidence of childhood asthma/wheezing. In addition, we aimed to pinpoint the potential sensitivity window during which air pollution exerts its effects. METHODS: We conducted a prospective birth cohort study wherein pregnant women were recruited during early pregnancy and followed up along with their children. Information regarding maternal and child characteristics was collected through questionnaires during each round of investigation. Diagnosis of asthma/wheezing was obtained from children's medical records. In addition, maternal and child exposures to air pollutants (PM2.5 CO, SO2, NO2, and O3) were evaluated using a spatiotemporal land use regression model. To estimate the mutual associations of exposure to mixed air pollutants with the risk of asthma/wheezing in children, we used the quantile g-computation model. RESULTS: In our study cohort of 3725 children, 392 (10.52%) were diagnosed with asthma/wheezing. After the follow-up period, the mean age of the children was 3.2 (SD 0.8) years, and a total of 14,982 person-years were successfully followed up for all study participants. We found that each quartile increase in exposure to mixed air pollutants (PM2.5, CO, SO2, NO2, and O3) during the second trimester of pregnancy was associated with an adjusted hazard ratio (HR) of 1.24 (95% CI 1.04-1.47). Notably, CO made the largest positive contribution (64.28%) to the mutual effect. After categorizing the exposure according to the embryonic respiratory development stages, we observed that each additional quartile of mixed exposure to air pollutants during the pseudoglandular and canalicular stages was associated with HRs of 1.24 (95% CI 1.03-1.51) and 1.23 (95% CI 1.01-1.51), respectively. Moreover, for the first year and first 2 years after birth, each quartile increment of exposure to mixed air pollutants was associated with HRs of 1.65 (95% CI 1.30-2.10) and 2.53 (95% CI 2.16-2.97), respectively. Notably, SO2 made the largest positive contribution in both phases, accounting for 50.30% and 74.70% of the association, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Exposure to elevated levels of mixed air pollutants during the first 1000 days of life appears to elevate the risk of childhood asthma/wheezing. Specifically, the second trimester, especially during the pseudoglandular and canalicular stages, and the initial 2 years after birth emerge as crucial susceptibility windows. RESUMO

High quality image reconstruction from undersampled k -space data is key to accelerating MR scanning. Current deep learning methods are limited by the small receptive fields in reconstruction networks, which restrict the exploitation of long-range information, and impede the mitigation of full-image artifacts, particularly in 3D reconstruction tasks. Additionally, the substantial computational demands of 3D reconstruction considerably hinder advancements in related fields. To tackle these challenges, we propose the following: 1) A novel convolution operator named Faster Fourier Convolution (FasterFC), aims at providing an adaptable broad receptive field for spatial domain reconstruction networks with fast computational speed. 2) A split-slice strategy that substantially reduces the computational load of 3D reconstruction, enabling high-resolution, multi-coil, 3D MR image reconstruction while fully utilizing inter-layer and intra-layer information. 3) A single-to-group algorithm that efficiently utilizes scan-specific and data-driven priors to enhance k -space interpolation effects. 4) A multi-stage, multi-coil, 3D fast MRI method, called the faster Fourier convolution based single-to-group network (FAS-Net), comprising a single-to-group k -space interpolation algorithm and a FasterFC-based image domain reconstruction module, significantly minimizes the computational demands of 3D reconstruction through split-slice strategy. Experimental evaluations conducted on the NYU fastMRI and Stanford MRI Data datasets reveal that the FasterFC significantly enhances the quality of both 2D and 3D reconstruction results. Moreover, FAS-Net, characterized as a method that can achieve high-resolution (320, 320, 256), multi-coil, (8 coils), 3D fast MRI, exhibits superior reconstruction performance compared to other state-of-the-art 2D and 3D methods.

RESUMO

The Golgi apparatus (GA) is central in shuttling proteins from the endoplasmic reticulum to different cellular areas. Therefore, targeting the GA to precisely destroy its proteins through local heat could induce apoptosis, offering a potential avenue for effective cancer therapy. Herein, a GA-targeted photothermal agent based on protein anchoring is introduced for enhanced photothermal therapy of tumor through the modification of near-infrared molecular dye with maleimide derivative and benzene sulfonamide. The photothermal agent can actively target the GA and covalently anchor to its sulfhydryl proteins, thereby increasing its retention within the GA. Under laser irradiation, the heat generated by the photothermal agent efficiently disrupts sulfhydryl proteins in situ, leading to GA dysfunction and ultimately inducing cell apoptosis. In vivo experiments demonstrate that the photothermal agent can precisely treat tumors and significantly reduce side effects.

RESUMO

Needle-type sensor, characterized by its slender, elongated shape, is a promising sensing method due to its rapid response, high sensitivity, and portability. Recently, the needle-type sensor technology has garnered increasing attention, leading to its accelerated development and extensive use in medical and healthcare, environmental monitoring, and geosciences. However, there remains a need for a comprehensive review of existing research. Here, we utilize scientometric analysis, which is booming recently, to conduct a comprehensive investigation of the needle-type sensor field. This analysis covers various aspects, including annual trends, journals, institutions, countries, disciplines, authors, references, and keywords of 136,667 publications from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) database spanning from January 1, 2004, to January 1, 2024. Additionally, we identify current hotspots, frontiers, and predict future trends. Eventually, three research hotspots are refined: multidisciplinary materials science, sensor miniaturization and integration, and biomedical engineering, indicating that further investigations may focus on creating biocompatible materials to enhance sensing properties, optimizing sensor structure through miniaturization and integration methods, and improving clinical applications in biomedical engineering. This work may facilitate the development of needle-type sensors.

RESUMO

Objective: To assess the effectiveness of perioperative nursing interventions in improving outcomes and satisfaction for patients undergoing laparoscopic surgery for ovarian endometriosis. Methods: From July 2021 to September 2022, 80 patients with endometriosis underwent laparoscopic surgery at Shijiazhuang Fourth Hospital and were randomly assigned to the conventional (n=40) and experimental (n=40) groups. During the perioperative period, patients in the conventional group received standard nursing interventions, while patients in the experimental group received comprehensive nursing interventions. The two groups were compared in terms of postoperative clinical indicators, self-rated anxiety scale (SAS) and self-rated depression scale (SDS) scores, nursing compliance, complications, and nursing satisfaction. Results: comprehensive nursing resulted in better postoperative clinical indices (time to get out of bed, hospital stay) versus routine nursing (all P < .001). The comprehensive nursing led to significantly lower SAS and SDS scores versus routine nursing. The nursing compliance of the patients in the experimental group was significantly higher than that of the patients in the conventional group (P < .001). Comprehensive nursing was associated with a significantly lower incidence of complications versus routine nursing (P < .001). Comprehensive nursing contributed to significantly higher nursing satisfaction versus routine nursing (P < .001). Conclusion: Comprehensive perioperative nursing interventions for patients with ovarian endometriosis undergoing laparoscopic surgery considerably accelerate patient recovery and enhance nursing compliance, as well as minimize patient negative emotions and improve patient satisfaction with nursing.  The comprehensive approach addresses the specific needs of patients during the recovery period, minimizing postoperative complications, accelerating patient recovery, and improving overall quality of life. By integrating psychological support, tailored strategies for pain management, early mobilization, and prompt intervention for complications, this intervention sets a benchmark for holistic care in gynecological surgery.

RESUMO

Floral organ development is one of the most vital events in flowering plants and is closely related to ornamental properties. The proliferate flower (a new branch or flower occurring in the centre of a flower) in plants is an interesting type, while the specific molecular mechanism remains largely unknown. Osmanthus fragrans 'Tianxiang Taige' has two different flower morphologies: normal flower and proliferate flower. Phenotypic observation suggested that a normal flower was composed of calyx, petal, stamen and pistil (reduced to leaf-like carpel). While in proliferate flower, the leaf-like carpel continued to grow and was replaced by a new branch. Paraffin section indicated that the re-growth of leaf carpels might be the main reason for proliferate flower formation. Transcriptome sequencing of normal and proliferate flower was performed, and the expression levels of related genes were analysed. Among the differentially expressed genes, OfBFT-a and OfBFT-b had differential expression during the proliferate flower formation process. The expression patterns revealed that both OfBFT-a and OfBFT-b were highly accumulated in carpels, and were significantly downregulated during the proliferate flower development process. Subcellular localization indicated that OfBFT-a and OfBFT-b proteins were located in the nucleus. Functional studies in 'Tianxiang Taige' and Arabidopsis showed that OfBFT-a and OfBFT-b had important roles in floral organ development, especially the proliferate flower formation process by downregulating the accumulation of AG and SEP3 homologous genes. These results may shed new light on the study of proliferate flower formation and flower morphology breeding in flowering plants.

RESUMO

The silkworm, Bombyx mori, is a complete metamorphosed economic insect, and the silk gland is a significant organ for silk protein synthesis and secretion. The silk gland completely degenerates during pupation, but the regulatory mechanism of programmed cell death (PCD) has not yet been understood. In the present study, we investigated the non-genetic pathway of 20E-induced PCD in the posterior silk gland (PSG) based on intracellular Ca2+ levels. Silk gland morphology and silk gland index indicated rapid degeneration of silk gland during metamorphosis from mature silkworm (MS) to pupal day 1 (P1), and Ca2+ levels within the PSG were found to peak during the pre-pupal day 1 (PP1) stage. Moreover, the results of autophagy and apoptosis levels within the PSG showed that autophagy was significantly increased in MS-PP1 periods, and significantly decreased in PP2 and P1 periods. Apoptosis was almost absent in MS-PP1 periods and significantly increased in PP2 and P1 periods. Additionally, western blotting results showed that autophagy preceded apoptosis, and the autophagy-promoting ATG5 was cleaved by calpain to the autophagy-inhibiting and apoptosis-promoting NtATG5 since PP1 period, while decreased autophagy was accompanied by increased apoptosis. Collectively, these findings suggest that Ca2+ is a key factor in the shift from autophagy to apoptosis.
