The Japanese puffer, Takifugu rubripes, is a commercially important fish species in China that is under serious threat from white spot disease (cyptocaryoniasis), which leads to heavy economic losses. We previously found that interleukin-1ß (IL-1ß), an important cytokine with a potential role in resistance against pathogens, was one of the most significantly differentially up-regulated proteins in the gills and spleen of T. rubripes infected by the protozoan parasite Cryptocaryon irritans. In this study, we assessed the potential function of T. rubripes IL-1ß (TrIL-1ß) in fish infected with C. irritans. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that the TrIL-1ß protein sequence was most closely related to that of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) (67.2 %). The incubation experiments revealed that TrIL-1ß may reduce trophont activity by destroying membranes. Immunofluorescence experiments showed that recombinant TrIL-1ß promoted the expression of endogenous IL-1ß, which penetrated and disrupted the cell membranes of trophonts. Transmission electron microscopy showed that the IL-1ß group had less tissue damage compared with control groups of fish. IL-1ß-small interfering RNA and IL-1ß overexpression experiments were performed in head kidney primary cells, and challenge experiments were performed in vitro. Quantitative RT-PCR results showed that TrIL-1ß regulated and activated MyD88/NF-κB and MyD88/MAPK/p38 signaling pathways during C. irritans infection. TrIL-1ß also promoted the differential expression of IgM, showing that it was involved in humoral immunity of T. rubripes. The cumulative mortality experiment show that TrIL-1ß could protect fish against C. irritans infection. These results enrich current knowledge about the molecular structure of TrIL-1ß. They also suggested that recombinant TrIL-1ß could be used as an adjuvant in a subunit vaccine against C. irritans infection, which is of profound importance for the prevention and control of parasitic diseases in T. rubripes.

Takifugu rubripes (T. rubripes) is a valuable commercial fish, and Cryptocaryon irritans (C. irritans) has a significant impact on its aquaculture productivity. DNA methylation is one of the earliest discovered ways of gene epigenetic modification and also an important form of modification, as well as an essential type of alteration that regulates gene expression, including immune response. To further explore the anti-infection mechanism of T. rubripes in inhibiting this disease, we determined genome-wide DNA methylation profiles in the gill of T. rubripes using whole-genome bisulfite sequencing (WGBS) and combined with RNA sequence (RNA-seq). A total of 4659 differentially methylated genes (DMGs) in the gene body and 1546 DMGs in the promoter between the infection and control group were identified. And we identified 2501 differentially expressed genes (DEGs), including 1100 upregulated and 1401 downregulated genes. After enrichment analysis, we identified DMGs and DEGs of immune-related pathways including MAPK, Wnt, ErbB, and VEGF signaling pathways, as well as node genes prkcb, myca, tp53, and map2k2a. Based on the RNA-Seq results, we plotted a network graph to demonstrate the relationship between immune pathways and functional related genes, in addition to gene methylation and expression levels. At the same time, we predicted the CpG island and transcription factor of four immune-related key genes prkcb and mapped the gene structure. These unique discoveries could be helpful in the understanding of C. irritans pathogenesis, and the candidate genes screened may serve as optimum methylation-based biomarkers that can be utilized for the correct diagnosis and therapy T. rubripes in the development of the ability to resist C. irritans infection.

Zinc-iodine batteries (ZIBs) have been recognized as a promising energy storage device due to their high energy density, low cost and environmental friendliness. However, the development of ZIBs is hindered by the shuttle effect of polyiodides which results in capacity degradation and poor cycling performance. Inspired by the ability of starch to form inclusion compounds with iodine, we propose to use a starch gel on the cathode to suppress the shuttle of polyiodides. Herein, porous carbon is utilized as a host for iodine species and provides an excellent conductive network, while starch gel is used as another host to suppress polyiodides shuttle, resulting in improved battery performance. The test results demonstrate that the conversion between I-/I2/I3- in the cathode and the effective inclusion role of starch suppress the shuttle of polyiodides during the charging process. Meanwhile, based on the electrochemical tests and theoretical DFT calculations, it is found that starch has a stronger ability to adsorb polyiodides compared to carbon materials, which enables effective confinement of polyiodides. The ZIBs used the cathode with starch gel exhibit high coulombic efficiency (>95 % at 0.2 A/g) and low self-discharge (86.8 % after resting for 24 h). This strategy is characterized by its simplicity, low cost and high applicability, making it significant for the advancement of high-performance ZIBs.

Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor (GLP-1R) is a prime drug target for type 2 diabetes and obesity. The ligand initiated GLP-1R interaction with G protein has been well studied, but not with ß-arrestin 1/2. Therefore, bioluminescence resonance energy transfer (BRET), mutagenesis and an operational model were used to evaluate the roles of 85 extracellular surface residues on GLP-1R in ß-arrestin 1/2 recruitment triggered by three representative GLP-1R agonists (GLP-1, exendin-4 and oxyntomodulin). Residues selectively regulated ß-arrestin 1/2 recruitment for diverse ligands, and ß-arrestin isoforms were identified. Mutation of residues K130-S136, L142 and Y145 on the transmembrane helix 1 (TM1)-extracellular domain (ECD) linker decreased ß-arrestin 1 recruitment but increased ß-arrestin 2 recruitment. Other extracellular loop (ECL) mutations, including P137A, Q211A, D222A and M303A selectively affected ß-arrestin 1 recruitment while D215A, L217A, Q221A, S223A, Y289A, S301A, F381A and I382A involved more in ß-arrestin 2 recruitment for the ligands. Oxyntomodulin engaged more broadly with GLP-1R extracellular surface to drive ß-arrestin 1/2 recruitment than GLP-1 and exendin-4; I147, W214 and L218 involved in ß-arrestin 1 recruitment, while L141, D215, L218, D293 and F381 in ß-arrestin 2 recruitment for oxyntomodulin particularly. Additionally, the non-conserved residues on ß-arrestin 1/2 C-domains contributed to interaction with GLP-1R. Further proteomic profiling of GLP-1R stably expressed cell line upon ligand stimulation with or without ß-arrestin 1/2 overexpression demonstrated both commonly and biasedly regulated proteins and pathways associated with cognate ligands and ß-arrestins. Our study offers valuable information about ligand induced ß-arrestin recruitment mediated by GLP-1R and consequent intracellular signaling events.

Copper is an environmental pollutant, and copper in aquatic environments mainly comes from soil and water. It enters the environment through atmospheric deposition, sewage discharge, and industrial production, and enters aquatic organisms, causing toxicity. Takifugu rubripes (T. rubripes) is a marine fish with high economic value. Due to the toxic effects of heavy metals on aquatic organisms such as fish, it can affect the gut community and metabolites of fish. The gut is an important channel for fish to communicate with the outside world and a necessary pathway for the metabolism of nutrients and toxic substances in the fish body. Studies have shown that due to changes in global water emissions and the high sensitivity of aquatic organisms to the environment, copper may pose greater potential hazards to aquatic organisms. Copper poses a greater risk to aquatic species than other heavy metals and metal/metal like pollutants (such as cadmium, lead, mercury, arsenic, etc.) . In order to elucidate the effects of copper exposure on the gut of T. rubripes. In this study, we exposed T. rubripes to 0, 50, 100, or 500 µg/L of copper for three days, the effects of copper exposure on the gut microbiota structure and metabolites of the T. rubripes were investigated using 16 S rRNA gene and metabolomics techniques. The research results indicate that with the increase copper concentration, the intestinal tissue of T. rubripes undergoes significant damage. 16 S rRNA sequencing results show that copper exposure alters the structure and metabolites of intestinal microbiota. Copper exposure of 100 and 500 µg/L inhibited the colonization of the bacterial gut, disrupted the intestinal barrier, and made the fish susceptible to the pathogens. Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis showed that copper regulated the production of metabolites such as L-histidine, arachidonic acid, and L-glutamic acid, which are related to energy and immunity. Microbiome-metabolome correlation analysis showed that Subdoligranulum, Family_XIII_AD3011_group, and Clostridium_sensu_stricto_1 were the key bacteria for copper ion intervention, and they might up-regulate the levels of metabolites such as indole-3-acetic acid, 3-indoleacrylic acid, and 5-hydroxyindole in the tryptophan metabolism pathway. In summary, our research has demonstrated that copper exposure can cause pathological changes in the intestinal tissue of the T. rubripes. High concentrations of copper ions can affect the colonization of the T. rubripes microbiota in the intestine, damage the fish's immune system, and alter the structure and metabolites of the intestinal microbiota, this can lead to intestinal metabolic dysfunction. providing a reference for the evaluation of the biological toxicity effects of heavy metal elements in the marine environment. This study provides a reference for evaluating the biological toxicity effects of heavy metal elements in marine environments.

BACKGROUND: Dilation may be the first right ventricular change and accelerates the progression of threatening ventricular tachyarrhythmias and heart failure for patients with arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC), but the treatment for right ventricular dilation remains limited. METHODS: Single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) of blood and biventricular myocardium from 8 study participants was performed, including 6 end-stage heart failure patients with ARVC and 2 normal controls. ScRNA-seq data was then deeply analyzed, including cluster annotation, cellular proportion calculation, and characterization of cellular developmental trajectories and interactions. An integrative analysis of our single-cell data and published genome-wide association study-based data provided insights into the cell-specific contributions to the cardiac arrhythmia phenotype of ARVC. Desmoglein 2 (Dsg2)mut/mut mice were used as the ARVC model to verify the therapeutic effects of pharmacological intervention on identified cellular cluster. RESULTS: Right ventricle of ARVC was enriched of CCL3+ proinflammatory macrophages and TNMD+ fibroblasts. Fibroblasts were preferentially affected in ARVC and perturbations associated with ARVC overlap with those reside in genetic variants associated with cardiac arrhythmia. Proinflammatory macrophages strongly interact with fibroblast. Pharmacological inhibition of Nod-like receptor protein 3 (NLRP3), a transcriptional factor predominantly expressed by the CCL3+ proinflammatory macrophages and several other myeloid subclusters, could significantly alleviate right ventricular dilation and dysfunction in Dsg2mut/mut mice (an ARVC mouse model). CONCLUSIONS: This study provided a comprehensive analysis of the lineage-specific changes in the blood and myocardium from ARVC patients at a single-cell resolution. Pharmacological inhibition of NLRP3 could prevent right ventricular dilation and dysfunction of mice with ARVC.

Glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide receptor (GIPR) is a potential drug target for metabolic disorders. It works with glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor and glucagon receptor in humans to maintain glucose homeostasis. Unlike the other two receptors, GIPR has at least 13 reported splice variants (SVs), more than half of which have sequence variations at either C or N terminus. To explore their roles in endogenous peptide-mediated GIPR signaling, we determined the cryoelectron microscopy (cryo-EM) structures of the two N terminus-altered SVs (referred as GIPR-202 and GIPR-209 in the Ensembl database, SV1 and SV2 here, respectively) and investigated the outcome of coexpressing each of them in question with GIPR in HEK293T cells with respect to ligand binding, receptor expression, cAMP (adenosine 3,5-cyclic monophosphate) accumulation, ß-arrestin recruitment, and cell surface localization. It was found that while both N terminus-altered SVs of GIPR neither bound to the hormone nor elicited signal transduction per se, they suppressed ligand binding and cAMP accumulation of GIPR. Meanwhile, SV1 reduced GIPR-mediated ß-arrestin 2 responses. The cryo-EM structures of SV1 and SV2 showed that they reorganized the extracellular halves of transmembrane helices 1, 6, and 7 and extracellular loops 2 and 3 to adopt a ligand-binding pocket-occupied conformation, thereby losing binding ability to the peptide. The results suggest a form of signal bias that is constitutive and ligand-independent, thus expanding our knowledge of biased signaling beyond pharmacological manipulation (i.e., ligand specific) as well as constitutive and ligand-independent (e.g., SV1 of the growth hormone-releasing hormone receptor).

In this study, we identified the differentially expressed proteins in gills stimulated by infected ciliates and analyzed the immune mechanisms of T. rubripes infected with the ciliate Cryptocaryon irritans. Through liquid chromatography analysis, a total of 144 proteins were identified with significant differences, of which 58 were upregulated and 86 were downregulated. Among phosphorylated proteins, we identified a total of 167 significantly different phosphorylated proteins, of which 44 were upregulated, 123 were downregulated, 60 were upregulated, and 208 were downregulated. We analyzed the data of proteomics and Phosphorylated proteome quantification protein omics to finally identify three phosphorylated proteins (RPS27, eNOS and CaM) and two phosphorylated protein kinases(CaMKII and MAPK1) as potential biomarkers for T. rubripes immune responses. We finally identified three phosphorylated proteins (RPS27, eNOS and CaM) and two phosphorylated protein kinases (CaMKII and MAPK1) as potential biomarkers of immune response of T. rubripes. Our research findings provide new insights into the immune mechanism of T. rubripes, which may serve as an effective indicator of C. irritans infection in T. rubripes.

BACKGROUND: Micro-computed tomography is important in cardiac imaging for preclinical small animal models, but motion artifacts may appear due to the rapid heart rates. To avoid influence of motion artifacts, the prospective ECG gating schemes based on an X-ray source trigger have been investigated. However, due to the lack of pulsed X-ray exposure modes, high-resolution micro-focus X-ray sources do not support source triggering in most cases. OBJECTIVE: To develop a fast-cardiac multiphase acquisition strategy using prospective ECG gating for micro-focus X-ray tubes with a continuous emission mode. METHODS: The proposed detector-trigger-based prospective ECG gating acquisition scheme (DTB-PG) triggers the X-ray detector at the R peak of ECG, and then collects multiple phase projections of the heart in one ECG cycle by sequence acquisition. Cardiac multiphase images are reconstructed after performing the same acquisition in all views. The feasibility of this strategy was verified in multiphase imaging experiments of a phantom with 150 ms motion period and a mouse heart on a micro-focus micro-CT system with continuous emission mode. RESULTS: Using a high frame-rate CMOS detector, DTB-PG discriminates the positions of the motion phantom well in 10 different phases and enables to distinguish the changes in the cardiac volume of the mouse in different phases. The acquisition rate of DTB-PG is much faster than other prospective gating schemes as demonstrated by theoretical analysis. CONCLUSIONS: DTB-PG combines the advantages of prospective ECG gating strategies and X-ray detector-trigger mode to suppress motion artifacts, achieve ultra-fast acquisition rates, and relax hardware limitations.

INTRODUCTION: Cystic adenomyosis is a rare variant of adenomyosis, with only 90 reported cases found in the literature so far. Diverticulum-like adenomyosis is even more uncommon, with only one documented case to date. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 42-year-old asymptomatic woman who had an incidental finding of a parauterine cyst on an abdominal computed tomography scan. B-ultrasonography also revealed an endometriotic cyst. Further MRI revealed a cystic lesion measuring 7.6 × 6.1 × 7.7 cm that communicated with the uterine cavity through a tiny channel. The fluid in the cyst showed high signal intensity on T1-weighted image (T1WI), and the cyst wall showed a marked low signal intensity on T2-weighted image (T2WI). No other masses were found on either side. After obtaining informed consent, we performed a laparoscopic exploration on the patient, where it became apparent that the 7.6 × 6.1 × 7.7 cm cystic mass was located on the left uterine isthmus-the excised lesion contained chocolate-like fluid within a thickened wall. Pathological examination revealed typical endometrial glands and interstitial tissues in the cystic wall. DISCUSSION: Cystic adenomyosis is a rare benign lesion in women of reproductive age that is known to cause hypermenorrhea, dysmenorrhea, and abnormal uterine bleeding. Our case represents the second documented case of diverticulum-like adenomyosis. However, the patient in our case did not exhibit abnormal uterine bleeding or dysmenorrhea. One possible explanation for this finding is that the sinus tract was too small to cause blood influx into the uterine cavity. CONCLUSION: Our case report provides valuable insights for clinicians to better understand this uncommon disease and reduce the incidence of misdiagnosis.

BACKGROUND: Dual-panel PET is often used for local organ imaging, especially breast imaging, due to its simple structure, high sensitivity, good in-plane resolution, and straightforward fusion with other imaging modalities. Nevertheless, because of data loss caused by the dual-panel structure, using conventional image reconstruction methods results in limited-view artifacts and low image quality in dual-panel positron emission mammography (PEM), which may seriously affect the diagnosis. To mitigate the limited-view artifacts in the dual-panel PEM, we propose a 3D directional gradient L0 norm minimization (3D-DL0) guided reconstruction method. METHODS: The detailed derivation and reasonable simplification of the 3D-DL0 algorithm are given first. Using this algorithm, we then obtain a prior image with edge recovery but contrast loss. To limit the solution space, the 3D-DL0 prior is introduced into the Maximum a Posteriori reconstruction. Meanwhile, a space-invariant point spread function is also implemented to restore image contrast and boundaries. Finally, the reconstructed images with limited-view artifact suppression are obtained. The proposed method was evaluated using the data acquired from physical phantoms and patients with breast tumors on a commercial dual-panel PET system. RESULTS: The qualitative and quantitative studies for phantom data and the blind reader study for clinical data show that the proposed method is more effective in reaching a balance between artifact elimination and image contrast improvement compared with various limited-view reconstruction methods. In addition, the iteration process of the method is proved convergent numerically. CONCLUSIONS: The image quality improvement confirms the potential value of the proposed reconstruction algorithm to address the limited-view problem, and thus improve diagnostic accuracy in dual-panel PEM imaging.

Nanocarrier-assisted pulmonary drug delivery system has been widely employed for lung local disease treatment due to its enhanced drug lesion accumulation and reduced systematical side effects. However, the mucus barriers covered on the epithelia of trachea and bronchial tree construct a dense barrier for inhaled nanocarrier transport, which compromises the therapeutical effects. In this study, a lipid liquid crystalline nanoparticle NLP@Z with surface zwitterion material hexadecyl betaine (HB) modification and N-acetylcysteine (NAC) encapsulation was presented to exert the combination strategy of mucus-inert surface and mucus degradation. The HB modification endowed NLP@Z mucus-inert surface to inhibit the interaction between NLP@Z and mucins, and the encapsulated NAC could effectively degrade the mucins and further decrease the mucus viscosity. This combination strategy was proved to significantly promote the mucus penetration performance and enhance epithelial cell uptake. In addition, the proposed NLP@Z was equipped with desired nebulization property, which could be served as a potential pulmonary delivery nanoplatform. In summary, the proposed NLP@Z highlights the employment of the combination strategy for mucus penetration enhancement in pulmonary delivery, which may become a versatile platform for lung disease therapy.

The human radial artery pulse carries a rich array of biomedical information. Accurate detection of pulse signal waveform and the identification of the corresponding pulse condition are helpful in understanding the health status of the human body. In the process of pulse detection, there are some problems, such as inaccurate location of radial artery key points, poor signal noise reduction effect and low accuracy of pulse recognition. In this system, the pulse signal waveform is collected by the main control circuit and the new piezoelectric sensor array combined with the wearable wristband, creating the hardware circuit. The key points of radial artery are located by an adaptive pulse finding algorithm. The pulse signal is denoised by wavelet transform, iterative sliding window and prediction reconstruction algorithm. The system has accurate pulse positioning, good noise reduction effect, and the accuracy of intelligent analysis is up to 98.4%, which can meet the needs of family health care.

To obtain more insight into IgM in anti-SARS-CoV-2 immunity a prospective cohort study was carried out in 32 volunteers to longitudinally profile the kinetics of the anti-SARS-CoV-2 IgM response induced by administration of a three-dose inactivated SARS-CoV-2 vaccine regimen at 19 serial time points over 456 days. The first and second doses were considered primary immunization, while the third dose was considered secondary immunization. IgM antibodies showed a low secondary response that was different from the other three antibodies (neutralizing, total, and IgG antibodies). There were 31.25% (10/32) (95% CI, 14.30-48.20%) of participants who never achieved a positive IgM antibody conversion over 456 days after vaccination. The seropositivity rate of IgM antibodies was 68.75% (22/32) (95% CI, 51.80-85.70%) after primary immunization. Unexpectedly, after secondary immunization the seropositivity response rate was only 9.38% (3/32) (95% CI, 1.30-20.10%), which was much lower than that after primary immunization (p = 0.000). Spearman's correlation analysis indicated a poor correlation of IgM antibodies with the other three antibodies. IgM response in vaccinees was completely different from the response patterns of neutralizing, total, and IgG antibodies following both the primary immunization and the secondary immunization and was suppressed by pre-existing immunity induced by primary immunization.

BACKGROUND: Texture analysis (TA) has demonstrated clinical values in extracting information, quantifying inhomogeneity, evaluating treatment outcomes, and predicting long-term prognosis for cardiac diseases. The aim of this study was to explore whether TA of SPECT myocardial perfusion could contribute to improving the prognosis of dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) patients. METHODS: Eighty-eight patients were recruited in our study between 2009 and 2020 who were diagnosed with DCM and underwent single-photon emission tomography myocardial perfusion imaging (SPECT MPI). Forty TA features were obtained from quantitative analysis of SPECT imaging in subjects with myocardial perfusion at rest. All patients were divided into two groups: the all-cause death group and the survival group. The prognostic value of texture parameters was assessed by Cox regression and Kaplan-Meier analysis. RESULTS: Twenty-five all-cause deaths (28.4%) were observed during the follow-up (39.2±28.7 months). Compared with the survival group, NT-proBNP and total perfusion deficit (TPD) were higher and left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) was lower in the all-cause death group. In addition, 26 out of 40 texture parameters were significantly different between the two groups. Univariate Cox regression analysis revealed that NT-proBNP, LVEF, and 25 texture parameters were significantly associated with all-cause death. The multivariate Cox regression analysis showed that low gray-level emphasis (LGLE) (P = 0.010, HR = 4.698, 95% CI 1.457-15.145) and long-run low gray-level emphasis (LRLGE) (P =0.002, HR = 6.085, 95% CI 1.906-19.422) were independent predictors of the survival outcome. When added to clinical parameters, LVEF, TPD, and TA parameters, including LGLE and LRLGE, were incrementally associated with all-cause death (global chi-square statistic of 26.246 vs. 33.521; P = 0.028, global chi-square statistic of 26.246 vs. 34.711; P = 0.004). CONCLUSION: TA based on gated SPECT MPI could discover independent prognostic predictors of all-cause death in medically treated patients with DCM. Moreover, TA parameters, including LGLE and LRLGE, independent of the total perfusion deficit of the cardiac myocardium, appeared to provide incremental prognostic value for DCM patients.

INTRODUCTION: Late-onset Alzheimer's disease (LOAD) is a complex neurodegenerative disease characterized by multiple progressive stages, glucose metabolic dysregulation, Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology, and inexorable cognitive decline. Discovery of metabolic profiles unique to sex, apolipoprotein E (APOE) genotype, and stage of disease progression could provide critical insights for personalized LOAD medicine. METHODS: Sex- and APOE-specific metabolic networks were constructed based on changes in 127 metabolites of 656 serum samples from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative cohort. RESULTS: Application of an advanced analytical platform identified metabolic drivers and signatures clustered with sex and/or APOE ɛ4, establishing patient-specific biomarkers predictive of disease state that significantly associated with cognitive function. Presence of the APOE ɛ4 shifts metabolic signatures to a phosphatidylcholine-focused profile overriding sex-specific differences in serum metabolites of AD patients. DISCUSSION: These findings provide an initial but critical step in developing a diagnostic platform for personalized medicine by integrating metabolomic profiling and cognitive assessments to identify targeted precision therapeutics for AD patient subgroups through computational network modeling.

Carbon-based microwave-absorbing materials with a low cost, simple preparation process, and excellent microwave absorption performance have important application value. In this paper, biomass-based carbon fibers were prepared using cotton fiber, hemp fiber, and bamboo fiber as carbon sources. Then, the precise loading of NiFe2O4 nanoparticles on biomass-based carbon fibers with the loading amount in a wide range was successfully realized through a sustainable and low-cost route. The effects of the composition and structure of NiFe2O4/biomass-based carbon fibers on electromagnetic parameters and electromagnetic absorption properties were systematically studied. The results show that the impedance matching is optimized, and the microwave absorption performance is improved after loading NiFe2O4 nanoparticles on biomass-based carbon fibers. In particular, when the weight percentage of NiFe2O4 nanoparticles in NiFe2O4/carbonized cotton fibers is 42.3%, the effective bandwidth of NiFe2O4/carbonized cotton fibers can reach 6.5 GHz with a minimum reflection loss of -45.3 dB. The enhancement of microwave absorption performance is mainly attributed to the appropriate electromagnetic parameters with the ε' ranging from 9.2 to 4.8, and the balance of impedance matching and electromagnetic loss. Given the simple synthesis method, low cost, high output, and excellent microwave absorption performance, the NiFe2O4/biomass-based carbon fibers have broad application prospects as an economic and broadband microwave absorbent.

Aiming at the disadvantages of high cost, complex processes, low yield, and narrow bandwidth of carbon-based microwave absorbing materials, this paper provides a novel and efficient method for synthesizing metal oxide/carbonized bamboo fibers using renewable natural bamboo fibers as a carbon source. The results suggested that the metal oxides such as NiO and Fe3O4 were uniformly dispersed on the carbonized bamboo fibers and proved that the dielectric component NiO and magnetic component Fe3O4 can significantly improve the microwave absorption performance of the carbonized bamboo fibers. As expected, the NiO/carbonized bamboo fibers showed excellent microwave absorption performance due to the appropriate complex permittivity, high impedance matching, and attenuation coefficient. A wide effective bandwidth of 6.4 GHz with 2.2 mm thickness is achieved, covering the entire Ku-band. Remarkably, the reflection loss (RL) values less than -10 dB covered the whole X-band at a thickness of 3.0 mm. This work reveals the potential of carbonized bamboo fibers-based composite as an economic and broadband microwave absorbent and offers a new strategy for designing promising microwave absorption materials.

Objective. To develop a simultaneous positron emission tomography-Optical (OPET) breast imaging dual-head PET subsystem, called DH-Mammo PET, for accurate, early diagnosis and efficacy assessment of breast cancer with high resolution and sensitivity.Approach. We developed a breast-dedicated PET based on LYSO crystal, silicon photomultiplier array and multi-voltage threshold sampling technique. It consists of two detector heads, each with a detection area of 216 mm × 145.5 mm. The distance between the detector heads is fixed at 120 mm. In order to extract coincidences and correct data, GPU-based software coincidence processing, random, scatter, normalization, gap-filling and attenuation corrections were applied in turn. The images were reconstructed using maximum likelihood expectation maximization with depth of interaction (DOI) modeling. The performance of DH-Mammo PET was evaluated referring to NEMA NU 4-2008, NU 2-2007 and Chinese industry recommended standard YY/T 1835-2022. Besides, several clinical patient images of DH-Mammo PET were compared with those of a whole-body PET/CT.Main results. The energy resolution was 14.5%, and time resolution was < 1.31 ns. Indicated by the22Na point source imaging, its spatial resolution was 2.60 mm (5.40 mm), 1.00 mm (1.04 mm), and 0.96 mm (0.93 mm) in theX,YandZdirections, respectively, using the system response matrix with (without) DOI modeling. Indicated by the Derenzo phantom imaging, the spatial resolution was ∼3.0 mm, <1.2 mm, and <1.2 mm in theX,YandZdirections. The system sensitivity was 6.87%, 4.89% and 3.37% with an energy window of 100-800, 250-750 and 350-650 keV, respectively. The scatter fraction was 26.43%, and the peak NECR was 162.6 kcps at 24.1 MBq for the modified rat-like phantom. As for the recovery coefficients, they ranged from 0.15 to 1.04 for rods between 1 and 5 mm obtained with a NEMA image quality phantom. The spill-over ratio for the air-filled and water-filled chamber was 0.05 and 0.11, respectively. DH-Mammo PET can provide more image details in clinical experiments and fulfil a fast scan with 60-120 s acquisition time.Significance. Good spatial resolution and high sensitivity of DH-Mammo PET would enable fast and accurate PET imaging of the breast. Besides, combining the DH-Mammo PET with the diffuse optical tomography would make full use of tumor metabolic imaging and tissue endogenous optical imaging, which would improve the accuracy of early clinical diagnosis of small lesions of breast cancers.
