RESUMO

Delayed repair of fractures seriously impacts patients' health and significantly increases financial burdens. Consequently, there is a growing clinical demand for effective fracture treatment. While current materials used for fracture repair have partially addressed bone integrity issues, they still possess limitations. These challenges include issues associated with autologous material donor sites, intricate preparation procedures for artificial biomaterials, suboptimal biocompatibility, and extended degradation cycles, all of which are detrimental to bone regeneration. Hence, there is an urgent need to design a novel material with a straightforward preparation method that can substantially enhance bone regeneration. In this context, we developed a novel nanoparticle, mPPTMP195, to enhance the bioavailability of TMP195 for fracture treatment. Our results demonstrate that mPPTMP195 effectively promotes the differentiation of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells into osteoblasts while inhibiting the differentiation of bone marrow mononuclear macrophages into osteoclasts. Moreover, in a mouse femur fracture model, mPPTMP195 nanoparticles exhibited superior therapeutic effects compared to free TMP195. Ultimately, our study highlights that mPPTMP195 accelerates fracture repair by preventing HDAC4 translocation from the cytoplasm to the nucleus, thereby activating the NRF2/HO-1 signaling pathway. In conclusion, our study not only proposes a new strategy for fracture treatment but also provides an efficient nano-delivery system for the widespread application of TMP195 in various other diseases.

Radix Puerariae is a traditional Chinese medicinal material with a rich history of use in East and Southeast Asia. Puerarin, a unique component of the Pueraria genus, serves as a quality control marker for herbal medicines like Pueraria lobata and Pueraria thomsonii in China, displaying diverse pharmacological properties. This study developed puerarin colloidal gold immunoassay dipsticks utilizing an anti-puerarin monoclonal antibody, resulting in a fast and sensitive detection method with a limit of 500-1000 ng·mL-1. Evaluation using tap water-extracted P. lobata and P. thomsonii samples showed consistent results compared to LC-MS analysis. Cross-reactivity assessments of puerarin analogs revealed minimal interference, affirming the dipstick's reliability for distinguishing between the two species.

Introduction: With the depletion of wild Astragali Radix (WA) resources, imitated-wild Astragali Radix (IWA) and cultivated Astragali Radix (CA) have become the main products of Astragali Radix. However, the quality differences of three growth patterns (WA, IWA, CA) and different growth years of Astragali Radix have not been fully characterized, leading to a lack of necessary scientific evidence for their use as substitutes for WA. Methods: We innovatively proposed a multidimensional evaluation method that encompassed traits, microstructure, cell wall components, saccharides, and pharmacodynamic compounds, to comprehensively explain the quality variances among different growth patterns and years of Astragali Radix. Results and discussion: Our study showed that the quality of IWA and WA was comparatively similar, including evaluation indicators such as apparent color, sectional structure and odor, thickness of phellem, diameter and number of vessels, morphology of phloem and xylem, and the levels and ratios of cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin, sucrose, starch, water-soluble polysaccharides, total-saponins. However, the content of sucrose, starch and sorbose in CA was significantly higher than WA, and the diameter and number of vessels, total-flavonoids content were lower than WA, indicating significant quality differences between CA and WA. Hence, we suggest that IWA should be used as a substitute for WA instead of CA. As for the planting years of IWA, our results indicated that IWA aged 1-32 years could be divided into three stages according to their quality change: rapid growth period (1-5 years), stable growth period (6-20 years), and elderly growth period (25-32 years). Among these, 6-20 years old IWA exhibited consistent multidimensional comparative results, showcasing elevated levels of key active components such as water-soluble polysaccharides, flavonoids, and saponins. Considering both the quality and cultivation expenses of IWA, we recommend a cultivation duration of 6-8 years for growers. In conclusion, we established a novel multidimensional evaluation method to systematically characterize the quality of Astragali Radix, and provided a new scientific perspective for the artificial cultivation and quality assurance of Astragali Radix.

The Huangshui River, a vital tributary in the upper reaches of the Yellow River within the eastern Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, is home to the endemic black fly species S. qinghaiense. In this study, we conducted a systematic survey of the distribution of the species in the Huangshui River basin, revealing its predominant presence along the river's main stem. Based on four ecological niche models-MaxEnt with parameter optimization; GARP; BIOCLIM; and DOMAIN-we conduct a comparative analysis; evaluating the accuracy of AUC and Kappa values. Our findings indicate that optimizing parameters significantly improves the MaxEnt model's predictive accuracy by reducing complexity and overfitting. Furthermore, all four models exhibit higher accuracy compared to a random model, with MaxEnt demonstrating the highest AUC and Kappa values (0.9756 and 0.8118, respectively), showcasing significant superiority over the other models (p < 0.05). Evaluation of predictions from the four models elucidates that potential areas of S. qinghaiense in the Huangshui River basin are primarily concentrated in the central and southern areas, with precipitation exerting a predominant influence. Building upon these results, we utilized the MaxEnt model to forecast changes in suitable areas and distribution centers during the Last Interglacial (LIG), Mid-Holocene (MH), and future periods under three climate scenarios. The results indicate significantly smaller suitable areas during LIG and MH compared to the present, with the center of distribution shifting southeastward from the Qilian Mountains to the central part of the basin. In the future, suitable areas under different climate scenarios are expected to contract, with the center of distribution shifting southeastward. These findings provide important theoretical references for monitoring, early warning, and control measures for S. qinghaiense in the region, contributing to ecological health assessment.

Occluded pedestrian detection faces huge challenges. False positives and false negatives in crowd occlusion scenes will reduce the accuracy of occluded pedestrian detection. To overcome this problem, we proposed an improved you-only-look-once version 3 (YOLOv3) based on squeeze-and-excitation networks (SENet) and optimized generalized intersection over union (GIoU) loss for occluded pedestrian detection, namely YOLOv3-Occlusion (YOLOv3-Occ). The proposed network model considered incorporating squeeze-and-excitation networks (SENet) into YOLOv3, which assigned greater weights to the features of unobstructed parts of pedestrians to solve the problem of feature extraction against unsheltered parts. For the loss function, a new generalized intersection over unionintersection over groundtruth (GIoUIoG) loss was developed to ensure the areas of predicted frames of pedestrian invariant based on the GIoU loss, which tackled the problem of inaccurate positioning of pedestrians. The proposed method, YOLOv3-Occ, was validated on the CityPersons and COCO2014 datasets. Experimental results show the proposed method could obtain 1.2% MR-2 gains on the CityPersons dataset and 0.7% mAP@50 improvements on the COCO2014 dataset.

Zearalenone(ZEN) is a toxic metabolite produced by Fusarium culmorum, F. graminearum, F. tricinctum, and other fungi, with estrogenic characteristics. Exposure to or ingestion of ZEN during pregnancy can cause reproductive dysfunction, miscarriage, stillbirth, and malformation, and seriously endanger human life and health. The detection methods for ZEN in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia(2020 edition) are liquid chromatography(LC) and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry(LC-MS), and it is stipulated that ZEN should not exceed 500 µg in 1 000 g of Coicis Semen. Although these detection methods by instruments can achieve the qualitative and quantitative analysis of ZEN in Coicis Semen, their high detection cost and long periods hinder the rapid screening of a large number of samples in the field. In this study, the synthesized ZEN hapten was conjugated with bovine serum albumin(BSA) and ovalbumin(OVA) to obtain the complete ZEN antigen. By virtue of antibody preparation techniques, ZEN monoclonal antibody 4F6 was prepared, which showed 177.5%, 137.1%, and 109.7% cross-reactivity with ZEN structural analogs zearalanol, zearalenone, and α-zearalenol, respectively, and no cross-reactivity with other fungal toxins such as aflatoxin. Direct competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(dcELISA) based on ZEN monoclonal antibody 4F6 was developed for the determination of ZEN in Coicis Semen with an IC_(50) of 1.3 µg·L~(-1) and a detection range of 0.22-21.92 µg·L~(-1). The recoveries were 83.91%-105.3% and the RSD was 4.4%-8.0%. The established dcELISA method was used to determine the ZEN residuals in nine batches of Coicis Semen samples, and the results were validated by LC-MS. The correlation between the two detection methods was found to be 0.993 9, indicating that the established dcELISA could be used for the rapid qualitative and quantitative detection of ZEN residuals in Coicis Semen.

The poor mobility of nymphs living underground, usually for many years, and the weak flying ability of adults make cicadas unique for evolutionary biology and bio-geographical study. Cicadas of the genus Karenia are unusual in Cicadidae in lacking the timbals that produce sound. Population differentiation, genetic structure, dispersal and evolutionary history of the eastern Asian mute cicada Karenia caelatata were investigated based on morphological, acoustic and molecular data. The results reveal a high level of genetic differentiation in this species. Six independent clades with nearly unique sets of haplotypes corresponding to geographically isolated populations are recognized. Genetic and geographic distances are significantly correlated among lineages. The phenotypic differentiation is generally consistent with the high levels of genetic divergence across populations. Results of ecological niche modeling suggest that the potential distribution range of this mountain-habitat specialist during the Last Glacial Maximum was broader than its current range, indicating this species had benefited from the climate change during the early Pleistocene in southern China. Geological events such as orogeny in Southwest China and Pleistocene climate oscillations have driven the differentiation and divergence of this species, and basins, plains and rivers function as natural "barriers" to block the gene flow. Besides significant genetic divergence being found among clades, the populations occurring in the Wuyi Mountains and the Hengduan Mountains are significantly different in the calling song structure from other populations. This may have resulted from significant population differentiation and subsequent adaptation of related populations. We conclude that ecological differences in habitats, coupled with geographical isolation, have driven population divergence and allopatric speciation. This study provides a plausible example of incipient speciation in Cicadidae and improves understanding of population differentiation, acoustic signal diversification and phylogeographic relationships of this unusual cicada species. It informs future studies on population differentiation, speciation and phylogeography of other mountain-habitat insects in the East Asian continent.

Introduction: Biological soil crusts (BSCs) constitute a substantial portion of primary production in dryland ecosystems. They successionally mature to deliver a series of ecosystem services. Bacteria, as an important community in BSCs, play critical roles in maintaining the structure and functions of BSCs. However, the process by which bacterial diversity and community are altered with BSC development is not fully understood. Methods: In this study, amplicons sequencing was used to investigate bacterial diversity and community compositions across five developmental stages of BSCs (bare sand, microbial crusts, algae crusts, lichen crusts, and moss crusts) and their relationship with environmental variables in the Gonghe basin sandy land in Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, northwestern China. Results: The results showed that Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, Cyanobacteria, Acidobacteria, Bacteroidetes, and Firmicutes were predominant in different developmental stages of BSCs, accounting for more than 77% of the total relative abundance. The phyla of Acidobacteria and Bacteroidetes were abundant in this region. With BSC development, bacterial diversity significantly increased, and the taxonomic community composition significantly altered. The relative abundance of copiotrophic bacteria, such as Actinobacteria, Acidobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Verrucomicrobia, Planctomycetes, and Gemmatimonadetes significantly increased, whereas the relative abundance of oligotrophic bacteria, such as Proteobacteria and Firmicutes significantly decreased. The relative abundance of Cyanobacteria in the algae crusts was significantly higher than that in the other developmental stages (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Variations in bacterial composition suggested that the potential ecological functions of the bacterial community were altered with BSC development. The functions varied from enhancing soil surface stability by promoting soil particle cementation in the early stages to promoting material circulation of the ecosystem by fixing carbon and nitrogen and decomposing litter in the later stages of BSC development. Bacterial community is a sensitive index of water and nutrient alterations during BSC development. SWC, pH value, TC, TOC, TN, NO3 -, TP and soil texture were the primary environmental variables that promoted changes in the bacterial community composition of BSCs.

Evergestis extimalis (Scopoli) is a significant pest of spring oilseed rape in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. It has developed resistance to many commonly used insecticides. Therefore, biopesticides should be used to replace the chemical pesticides in pest control. In this study, the effects of ice-nucleation-active (INA) microbes (Pseudomonas syringae 1.7277, P. syringae 1.3200, and Erwinia pyrifoliae 1.3333) on E. extimalis were evaluated. The supercooling points (SCP) were markedly increased due to the INA bacteria application when they were compared to those of the untreated samples. Specifically, the SCP of E. extimalis after its exposure to a high concentration of INA bacteria in February were -10.72 °C, -13.73 °C, and -14.04 °C. Our findings have demonstrated that the trehalase (Tre) genes were up-regulated by the application of the INA bacteria, thereby resulting in an increased trehalase activity. Overall, the INA bacteria could act as effective heterogeneous ice nuclei which could lower the hardiness of E. extimalis to the cold and then freeze them to death in an extremely cold winter. Therefore, the control of insect pests with INA bacteria goes without doubt, in theory.

Uncovering mate choice and factors that lead to the choice are very important to understanding sexual selection in evolutionary change. Cicadas are known for their loud sounds produced by males using the timbals. However, males in certain cicada species emit 2 kinds of sounds using respectively timbals and stridulatory organs, and females may produce their own sounds to respond to males. What has never been considered is the mate choice in such cicada species. Here, we investigate the sexual selection and potential impact of predation pressure on mate choice in the cicada Subpsaltria yangi Chen. It possesses stridulatory sound-producing organs in both sexes in addition to the timbals in males. Results show that males producing calling songs with shorter timbal-stridulatory sound intervals and a higher call rate achieved greater mating success. No morphological traits were found to be correlated with mating success in both sexes, suggesting neither males nor females display mate preference for the opposite sex based on morphological traits. Males do not discriminate among responding females during mate searching, which may be due to the high energy costs associated with their unusual mate-seeking activity and the male-biased predation pressure. Females generally mate once but a minority of them re-mated after oviposition which, combined with the desirable acoustic traits of males, suggest females may maximize their reproductive success by choosing a high-quality male in the first place. This study contributes to our understanding mechanisms of sexual selection in cicadas and other insects suffering selective pressure from predators.

Taxonomic status and phylogenetic position of some skippers within Hesperiidae remains a controversial issue, here, we sequenced and analyzed the complete mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) of Abraximorpha davidii, one of species in Hesperiidae. This mitogenome is 15,469 bp long and encodes 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 transfer RNA genes (tRNAs), and two ribosomal RNA unit genes (rRNAs). The overall base composition of the mitogenome is A 40.2%, T 41.4%, C 11.2%, and G 7.2%, with a high A + T content of 81.6%. Except for cox1 starting with CGA, all other PCGs start with the standard ATN codons (seven ATG and five ATT). Most of the PCGs terminate with the stop codon TAA, whereas cox1, cox2, nad5, and nad4 end with the incomplete codon T-. Phylogenetic analysis showed that A. davidii is closely related to Daimio tethys and Tagiades vajuna, then this clade clusters Ctenoptilum vasava and Celaenorrhinus maculosa.

Coicis Semen is a common bulk medicinal material used for both medicine and food, which has the effect of promoting diuresis, draining dampness, invigorating the spleen and checking diarrhea. It is derived from Coix lacryma-jobi var. ma-yuen of the family Poaceae, and is easily contaminated by fungi such as Fusarium graminearum and F. flavum due to climate reasons to produce vomitoxin. The guiding principles for determination of vomitoxin in Chinese medicinal materials in Chinese Pharmacopoeia are mainly HPLC and LC-MS, which have long detection period and are time-consuming and laborious, and thus cannot meet the requirements of on-site quality inspection of drugs. The complete antigen of vomitoxin-protein was obtained by chemical derivatization of vomitoxin. The monoclonal antibody against vomitoxin was prepared by classic monoclonal antibody preparation technology, and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA) method for detection of vomitoxin in Coicis Semen was established through methodological investigation. The IC_(50) based on the ELISA for vomitoxin in Coicis Semen was 3.88 µg·L~(-1), and the average recoveries and the RSD were 77.32%-93.73% and 4.6%-9.7%, respectively. With the established ELISA method, the vomitoxin residue in 14 batches of Coicis Semen samples were determined and validated by LC-MS, and the correlation between the two assays was found to be 0.997 8, indicating that the established ELISA method could be used for quantitative determination of vomitoxin residue in Coicis Semen and could achieve the rapid quantitative determination of the vomitoxin residue.

Colias fieldii is a common seen diurnal butterflies in the fields and widely distributed in many provinces of China. In this study, we sequenced and analyzed the complete mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) of C. fieldii. This mitogenome was 15,150 bp long and encoded 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 transfer RNA genes (tRNAs), and two ribosomal RNA unit genes (rRNAs). The overall base composition of the mitogenome was estimated to be A 39.8%, T 41.2%, C 11.4% and G 7.6%, with a high A + T content of 81.0%. Except for cox1 started with CGA, all other PCGs started with the standard ATN codons (seven ATG, four ATT and one ATC). Most of the PCGs terminated with the stop codon TAA or TAG, whereas cox1, cox2, nad5 and nad4 end with the incomplete codon T--. Phylogenetic analysis showed that C. fieldii is indeed the sister species of Colias erate with a high support value. All seven Coliadinae species formed one clade and was sister to Pierinae butterflies. Within Coliadinae, the relationships (Eurema + (Gonepteryx + (Catopsilia + Colias))) were highly supported.

Mutualistic associations between symbiotic bacteria and their insect hosts are widespread. The bacterial diversity and community composition within hosts may play an important role in shaping insect biology, ecology, and evolution. Here, we focused on the bacterial communities in bacteriomes, ovaries and testes of three representative populations of the cicada Platypleura kaempferi (Fabricius) using high-throughput 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing approach combined with light microscopy and confocal imaging approach. The obligate symbiont Sulcia was detected in all the examined samples, which showed a relatively high abundance in most bacteriomes and ovaries. The unclassified OTUs formerly identified as an unclassified Rhizobiales bacterium was demonstrated to be the co-obligate symbiont Hodgkinia, which showed 100% infection rate in all the examined samples and had an especially high abundance in most bacteriomes and ovaries. Hodgkinia and Sulcia occupy the central and peripheral bacteriocytes of each bacteriome unit, respectively. Cluster analysis revealed that the bacterial communities in bacteriomes, ovaries and testes of Zhouzhi and Ningshan populations separated strongly from each other. Significant difference was also detected between the Yangling and Ningshan populations, but no significant difference was detected between the Yangling and Zhouzhi populations. This may be related to the difference of host plants and genetic differentiation of these populations. Our findings show that the bacterial communities can be influenced by the population differentiation of the host cicadas and/or the host plants of cicadas, which improve our understanding of the associations between the bacterial community and population differentiation of sap-feeding insects.

Ceriagrion fallax is ubiquitous in south China and is particularly easy be found in some rice fields. In this study, we sequenced and analyzed the complete mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) of C. fallax. This mitogenome was 15,350 bp long and encoded 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 transfer RNA genes (tRNAs) and two ribosomal RNA unit genes (rRNAs). The nucleotide composition of the mitogenome was biased toward A and T, with 74.0% of A + T content (A 42.1%, T 31.9%, C 14.6%, G 11.4%). Gene order was conserved and identical to most other previously sequenced Zygoptera dragonflies. Most PCGs of C. fallax have the conventional start codons ATN (seven ATG, two ATT, and two ATC), with the exception of nad3 and nad1 (TTG). Except for four PCGs (cox1, cox2, cox3, and nad5) end with the incomplete stop codon T--, all other PCGs terminated with the stop codon TAA. Phylogenetic analysis showed that C. fallax got together with the same family species (Agriocnemis femina, Enallagma cyathigerum, Ischnura elegans, Ischnura pumilio) with high support value. The relationships (Megapodagrionidae + ((Calopterygidae + (Euphaeidae + Pseudolestidae)) + (Coenagrionidae + Platycnemididae))) were supported within Zygoptera.

A sensitive quantification method using pressurized liquid extraction (PLE) and solid phase extraction (SPE) coupled with ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS) was developed for determination of 19 anthelmintic drugs (ADs) belonging to seven structural groups (Benzimidazoles, Diphenylsulfides, Imidazothiazoles, Hexahydropyrazines, Macrocylic lactones, Salicylanilides, Tetrahydropyrimidines) in environmental water and sediment samples. Eleven SPE cartridges, sample pH, elution solvents were tested to determine the optimal conditions for extraction. Among these investigated SPE types, the best recoveries for 19 target ADs were obtained from Oasis HLB cartridge with 37-102%, 45-103%, 37-88%, 28-82% and 31-90% for spiked river water, tap water, rainwater, wastewater, and sediment respectively (with RSD < 15%), except for closantel. The 19 ADs were separated within 10 min by a BEH C18 column and monitored in both positive and negative ions modes with switching electrospray ionization source. The cross-talk interferences were solved by identification of secondary mass spectrum of substances through MRM-IDA-EPI scanning using Qtrap. These interference peaks could be efficiently eliminated by setting MRM segments or using Qtrap to obtain tertiary fragmented information. The developed methods were satisfactory in terms of linearity, accuracy, and precision, and used eight isotopically labeled compounds as internal standards to correct matrix effects. Method quantification limit (MQL) for 19 ADs was below 1.1 ng/L, 0.4 ng/L, 5.4 ng/L and 2.3 ng/g for river water, tap water, wastewater, and sediment, respectively. The validated method was successfully used to investigate the occurrence of anthelmintics in water and sediment samples from Chengdu, China. All ADs were detected in environment with the concentrations at ng/L level.

Climate change and geographical events play key roles in driving population genetic structure of organisms, but different scenarios were suggested for species occurring in tropical and subtropical areas. We investigated the population genetic structure, diversity and demographic history of the cicada Platypleura hilpa which occurs in coastal areas of southern China and northeastern Indo-Burma, and analysed the potential impact of climate change and geological events on its evolutionary history. Our data imply that P. hilpa comprises five main lineages with nearly unique sets of haplotypes and distinct geographic distributions. A major split of the lineages occurred in the Pleistocene. Geographic distance and geomorphic barriers serve as the primary factors shaping the genetic population structure, and several climatic factors are associated with the divergence. The potential range during the Last Glacial Maximum has apparently increased in south China and the exposed South China Sea Shelf. The Pleistocene sea-level fluctuations had profound effects on the regional genetic structure. The Beibu Gulf represents a more important geographic barrier than the Qiongzhou Strait in blocking gene flow among populations. These results contribute to a better understanding of the pressure climatic change and geographical events impose on insects in coastal areas of East Asia.

Little is known about the mechanisms underlying the relationship between changes in salivary proteins and the adaptation of insects to different host-plants. To address this knowledge gap, the transcriptional profiles of salivary glands were compared among three populations of the rare cicada Subpsaltria yangi, in which two populations specialize on Zizyphus jujuba var. spinosa, but the population occurring in the Helan (HL) Mountains is locally specialized on the endemic plant Ephedra lepidosperma. The comparisons indicate that genes related to digestion and detoxification are differentially regulated in populations feeding on different plants, possibly reflecting adaptative changes in salivary proteins of S. yangi in response to different host chemistries. In detail, 38 differentially expressed genes and 21 up-regulated genes related to digestion and detoxification were identified respectively in two pairwise comparisons among the populations using different hosts, with some genes exclusively expressed in the HL population. Our results are consistent with the hypothesis that the host plant shift in the HL population was facilitated by differential regulation of genes related to digestion and detoxification. This study provides new information for elucidating the molecular mechanisms underlying the relationship between changed salivary proteins and the adaptability of plant-feeding insects to novel host plants.

BACKGROUND: Geographical isolation combined with historical climatic fluctuations have been identified as two major factors that contribute to the formation of new species. On the other hand, biotic factors such as competition and predation are also able to drive the evolution and diversification of organisms. To determine whether geographical barriers contributed to population divergence or speciation in the rare endemic cicada Subpsaltria yangi the population differentiation, genetic structure and phylogeography of the species were investigated in the Loess Plateau and adjacent areas of northwestern China by analysing mitochondrial and nuclear DNA and comparing the calling song structure of 161 male individuals. RESULTS: The results reveal a low level of genetic differentiation and relatively simple phylogeographic structure for this species, but two independent clades corresponding to geographically isolated populations were recognised. Genetic and geographical distances were significantly correlated among lineages. Results of divergence-time estimation are consistent with a scenario of isolation due to glacial refugia and interglacial climate oscillation in northwestern China. Significant genetic divergence was found between the population occurring in the Helan Mountains and other populations, and recent population expansion has occurred in the Helan Mountains and/or adjacent areas. This population is also significantly different in calling song structure from other populations. CONCLUSIONS: Geographical barriers (i.e., the deserts and semi-deserts surrounding the Helan Mountains), possibly coupled with related ecological differences, may have driven population divergence and allopatric speciation. This provides a possible example of incipient speciation in Cicadidae, improves understanding of population differentiation, acoustic signal diversification and phylogeographic relationships of this rare cicada species of conservation concern, and informs future studies on population differentiation, speciation and phylogeography of other insects with a high degree of endemism in the Helan Mountains and adjacent areas.

RESUMO

We report the case of an anterior orbital tumor in a young woman that enlarged during pregnancy. The mass was excised and found to be a spindle cell tumor with immunohistochemical reactivity consistent with a solitary fibrous tumor, a rare entity in the spectrum of fibroblastic mesenchymal tumors. The tumor was strongly positive for the progesterone receptor, consistent with its clinical growth during the antenatal and postnatal periods. To our knowledge, a primary orbital tumor with these characteristics has rarely been reported in the literature.
