Cut-and-unfold approach to fullerene enumeration.

A simple and effective approach for the enumeration of fullerene structures is proposed. The method combines the formalism of a fullerene graph cut-and-unfold onto a planar triangular lattice and a topological description of closed quasi-2D clusters. A tabulation of possible fullerene graphs Cn is given for the number of atoms 20 < or = n < or = 150.

Rhythmic structures and atherosclerosis in the aorta.

The presence of so-called rhythmic structures (RS) or 'wave-lines' was studied in aortic specimens from 380 males and 201 females of ages between 10 and 39 years, from Malmö, Sweden, Prague, CSSR, and Yalta, Ukraine. RS were found in 56% of the males and 54% of the females, but with some sex differences between cities: in Malmö they were more frequent in males, in Yalta in females, but in Prague no sex difference was found. RS were significantly more common in the abdominal than in the thoracic part (68% and 32%, respectively). All stages of transformation of rhythmic structures into fibrous plaques can be found. In aortas with RS, fibrous plaques were statistically more frequent than in aortas without RS, and the fibrous plaques were mostly found in the same location as the RS.

An original method is suggested for assessment of the profile of specific weight of peripheral blood red cell pool cells based on fractionation of washed red cells in verograffin discrete density gradients with due consideration for osmotic reactivity of verograffin solutions. Fifty-five donors and 90 patients with various anemic syndromes (iron-deficiency anemia, paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria, autoimmune hemolytic, B12-deficiency, and hypoplastic anemias, acute leukemia) were examined. Analysis of peripheral red cell pool helped specify the disease severity, monitor the adequacy of therapy, verify a remission, and predict the process recurrences. Moreover, study of red cell pool fraction composition permits assessment of the individual normal level of red cells and Hb in human blood, which is significant when making a person's "health passport".

[A micromethod of determining the Willebrand factor in blood]. / Mikrometod opredeleniia faktora Villebranda v plazme krovi.

The suggested method for Willebrand's factor detection differs from the known methods by a 2-3 times higher sensitivity and takes 10 times less blood. The technique is based on estimation of washed formalin-treated donor platelet ristomycin aggregation index by scintillating these cells in Laborskel automated scintillator in supernatants of 2 samples with 0.1% ristomycin solution after the tested platelet-free plasma is added to one of these samples. Willebrand's factor level is found on the calibration curve of standard dilutions of a mixture of platelet-free donor plasma. The method is sufficiently simple, operative, and sensitive; it permits the diagnosis of not only Willebrand's disease, but of the hyperaggregation syndromes associated with vascular endothelium involvement that occur in various conditions, as well; it helps monitoring the efficacy of substitute and antiaggregation therapy.
