RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: The live donor nephrectomy is an unusual surgical procedure as it is performed on healthy individuals. It is important to make the procedure as safe as possible without compromising the health of the donor and graft function. JUSTIFICATION: In Mexico during 2014, 2610 kidney transplantations performed, and 1862 grafts were from living donors. OBJECTIVE: We describe our experience with hand-assisted laparoscopic nephrectomy on live donors for kidney transplantation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We present a descriptive and observational study in which all living donors who completed the study protocol for renal transplantation are included. RESULTS: From September 2006 to July 2015, there were 238 hand-assisted laparoscopic nephrectomies with live donors; 227 (95.37%) were performed on the left side and 11 (4.63%) on the right side. Of donors, 54.1% were females. The average values for the variables analyzed were age 38.17 years, 25.94 BMI, creatinine 0.82-1.13 mg/dL pre- and postoperative month respectively, length of stay 4.95 (range 2-8), warm ischemia 5.07 (range 3-13) minutes, surgical time 168.85 minutes (range 90-306), and transsurgical bleeding 139 055 mL (range 25-650). One patient was reoperated for abdominal pain and bloating without evidence of pathology, attributing it to metabolic ileus. Two patients were converted to open surgery; 1 by technical problems with the laparoscopic equipment and the second by bleeding from the renal vein, both with good results. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: Laparoscopic nephrectomy is a safe method that allows kidney donors to have a speedy recovery without modifying the survivals of renal grafts.

RESUMO

Concentrations of Cr, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Pb and Fe in the topsoils (0-10 cm) from Las Tunas city were measured by X-ray fluorescence analysis. The mean Cr, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn and Pb contents in the urban topsoil samples (97 ± 30, 14 ± 2, 35 ± 36, 94 ± 26, 199 ± 87 and 42 ± 29 mg kg⁻¹ dry weight, respectively) were compared with mean concentrations for other cities around the world with similar population. Cr content in school grounds, parks and residential areas exceed in 20 % the average Cr background level. Highest content for Ni was determined in residential areas, for Zn in market gardens soils and as for Pb, the highest topsoil-background content ratios were observed for market gardens (2.7) and residential areas (2.3). Spatial distribution maps indicated the same behaviour for Cr-Co-Ni and Pb-Zn, respectively, whereas the spatial distribution of Cu differs from other heavy metals. On the other hand, the metal-to-iron normalisation, using (10-20 cm) bottom soil contents as background, showed that topsoils in Las Tunas city are severely enriched with lead and not enriched with the rest of the determined metals. The average values of integrated pollution index (IPI) indicated that soils are moderately contaminated by heavy metals (1.17 ≤ IPI(ave) ≤ 1.39), but enrichment index values shows that metal concentrations on the studied locations are not above the permissible levels for urban agriculture.

RESUMO

Nanoparticles of bovine α-lactalbumin (α-LA) prepared by desolvation and glutaraldehyde crosslinking are promising carriers for bioactive compounds in foods. The objective of this work was to study the effect of changes in hydrophobic interactions by using different desolvating agents (acetone, ethanol, or isopropanol) and the use of a heat or high-pressure treatment step before the desolvation process on the size, structure, and properties of α-LA nanoparticles. In all cases, a high average particle yield of 99.63% was obtained. Smaller sizes (152.3 nm) can be obtained with the use of acetone as the desolvating agent and without any pretreatment. This is the first time that α-LA nanoparticles in the size range of 100 to 200 nm have been obtained. These nanoparticles, with an isoelectric point of 3.61, are very stable at pH values >4.8, based on their ζ-potential, although their antioxidant activity is weak. The use of the desolvating agent with the smallest polarity index (isopropanol) produced the largest particles (293.4 to 324.9 nm) in all cases. These results support the idea that controlling hydrophobic interactions is a means to control the size of α-LA nanoparticles. No effect of pretreatment on nanoparticle size could be detected. All types of nanoparticles were easily degraded by the proteolytic enzymes assayed.

RESUMO

Concentrations of cobalt, nickel, cooper, zinc and lead in the top-soils (0-10 cm) from a former Havana solid waste open dump were estimated by X-ray fluorescence analysis. The mean metal contents in the dump topsoil samples (in mg kg(-1): 8.4 ± 2.7 for cobalt, 50 ± 27 for nickel, 252 ± 80 for copper, 489 ± 230 for zinc and 276 ± 140 for lead) were compared with mean concentrations from Havana urban soils and from other solid waste disposals around the world. The comparison with Dutch soil quality guidelines showed a serious cooper contamination and a slight contamination with the rest of determined metals. The values of the integrated pollution index (mean index = 3.5) indicated that dump soils are highly contaminated by metals, and the enrichment index values shows that metal concentrations on the studied locations are above the permissible levels for urban agriculture.

RESUMO

Concentrations of Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Pb and Fe in the top-soils (0-10 cm) from urbanized and un-urbanized areas of Havana city were measured by X-ray fluorescence analysis. The mean Co, Ni, Cu, Zn and Pb contents in the urban topsoil samples (13.9 ± 4.1, 66 ± 26, 101 ± 51, 240 ± 132 and 101 ± 161 mg kg(-1), respectively) were compared with mean concentrations for other cities around the world. The results revealed the highest concentrations of metals in topsoil samples from industrial sites. Lowest metal contents were determined in the un-urbanized areas. The comparison with Dutch soil quality guidelines showed a slight contamination with Co, Ni Cu and Zn in all studied sites and with Pb in industrial soils. On the other hand, the metal-to-iron normalisation using Earth crust contents as background showed that soils from urbanized areas in Havana city (industrial sites, parks and school grounds) are moderately enriched with zinc, moderately to severe enriched (city parks and school grounds) and severe enriched (industrial sites) with lead. The values of integrated pollution index (IPI) indicated that industrial soils are middle and high contaminated by heavy metals (1.19 ≤ IPI ≤ 7.54), but enrichment index values (EI) shows that metal concentrations on the studied locations are not above the permissible levels for urban agriculture, except soils from power and metallurgical plants surroundings.

RESUMO

Iron, chromium, cobalt and nickel concentration levels in urban soil samples collected from Moa city (Holguín province), northeastern Cuba were determined. Both chromium and nickel contents exceed the Dutch Intervention Value soil quality standard in 2.8-5.4 and 1.3-3.3 times, respectively. Furthermore, cobalt content exceeds the Target Value in 1.3-1.8 times. Metal-to-Iron normalization predicts a natural origin for nickel and cobalt (Enrichment Factor <1), and also a moderate chromium enrichment (Enrichment Factor = 1.5-4.0) in all studied stations. The application of the Urban Environment Entropy Model show that residential area located near to industrial area is slightly affected by industrial chromium emissions and not affected by cobalt and nickel possible emissions. A chromium speciation in soil samples is recommended in order to evaluate the real impact of the current chromium content in Moa urban soils to local urban and suburban agricultures.

RESUMO

Levels of copper, zinc and lead were determined in sediments and edible muscle of marine snail Strombus gigas collected from Guacanayabo Gulf, Cuba. The concentration range of each metal in marine snail muscle on mg kg(-1) wet weight varied as follows: Cu = 6.4-32.6, Zn = 20.4-31.1 and Pb = 0.2-2.3; and in corresponding sediments (on mg kg(-1) dry weight) as: Cu = 157-186, Zn = 56-94 and Pb = 20-37. The average biota-sediment accumulation factors (BSAFs) obtained for studied metals are less than unity in all cases, indicating that only a little fraction of metal content in the sediments is bioavailable, independently of their possible enrichments in the sediments. The concentrations of copper and lead in some of the marine snails are above typical public health recommended limits.

RESUMO

The effects of high hydrostatic pressure (HHP) processing (at 200 to 600 MPa, 25 to 55 degrees C, and from 5 to 15 min) on some structural properties of alpha-lactalbumin was studied in a pH range of 3.0 to 9.0. The range of HHP processes produced a variety of molten globules with differences in their surface hydrophobicity and secondary and tertiary structures. At pH values of 3 and 5, there was a decrease in the alpha-helix content concomitant with an increase in beta-strand content as the pressure increased. No changes in molecular size due to HHP-induced aggregation were detected by sodium dodecyl sulfate-PAGE. All samples showed higher thermostability as the severity of the treatment increased, indicating the formation of a less labile structure related to the HHP treatment.

RESUMO

Studies for the determination of radionuclide concentrations in foodstuffs, water and air were carried out in Cuba for the estimation of annual committed effective doses to members of the public as a result of environmental radionuclides via ingestion and inhalation. As a result of these studies, it was possible to determine the concentrations of 226Ra, 210Pb, 210Po, 232Th, 90Sr and 137Cs in different food groups that constitute the diet of the Cuban population, as well as the 222Rn concentrations in air. Based on these results and using previously obtained results for doses due to the 40K body content, the annual committed effective doses due to the intake of studied radionuclides were estimated. An average value of 120+/-4 microSv y-1 was obtained for doses due to ingestion of food and water and the obtained value for 222Rn inhalation was 240+/-1 microSv y-1. Using the representative value obtained previously for 40K (150+/-40 microSv y-1) and assuming a dose of 50+/-50 microSv y-1 for the probable contribution of 220Rn by inhalation, a representative value of 560+/-20 microSv was estimated for the average annual committed effective doses due to ingestion and inhalation of radionuclides for the Cuban population. Obtained values are consistent with the expected results, taking into account the characteristics of Cuban exposure scenarios, with low-activity concentration levels in environmental objects and high air exchange rates in dwellings: These results are in the same order of magnitude as results obtained by other authors and the reference values established by the USNCEAR.

RESUMO

Potassium-40 constitutes the main natural source of potassium present in the body, which influences the effective dose received by people. With the aim of assessing the contribution of this component to the doses received by the Cuban population, a study intended to assess the doses was developed. For this purpose, a representative sample of the Cuban population was selected according to age and sex. The measurements were made using the whole-body counter (WBC) of the Center for Radiation Protection and Hygiene (CPHR). For dose estimations, a uniform distribution of potassium for the whole body was assumed. The methodology used was the one recommended by the ICRP. The values of annual effective dose range between 93 and 209 microSv for females and between 123 and 212 microSv for males. The annual average effective dose for members of the public was estimated as 150 +/- 40 microSv, taking into account the experimental data and the specific features of the Cuban population. With the dose values obtained, it was possible to model dose estimates by means of a neural network, which was trained with the results obtained and using as starting data the sex, age, height and corporal weight of people studied. The modelobtained allows consideration of the anatomical features of each person in the estimation of doses.

RESUMO

The particular chromophoric structure of C(70)Ph(10), which consists of two cage-centered π-electron systems, makes its photophysical properties an exception to those found for other phenylated [70]fullerenes C(70)Ph(2n) (n=2-4). For these other C(70)Ph(2n) species, their intrinsic photophysical properties undergo smooth transitions as a function of n.

RESUMO

The interaction between each one of Trichomonas vaginalis and Tritrichomonas foetus with their hosts is a complex process in which components associated to the cell surfaces of both parasites and host epithelial cells, and also to soluble components found in vaginal/urethral secretions, are involved. Either cytoadhesion or the cytotoxicity exerted by parasites to host cells can be dictated by virulence factors such as adhesins, cysteine proteinases, laminin-binding proteins, integrins, integrin-like molecules, a cell detachment factor, a pore-forming protein, and glycosidases among others. How trichomonads manipulate informations from the extracellular medium, transduce such informations, and respond to them by stimulating the activities of some surface molecules and/or releasing enzymes are the aspects concerning trichomonal virulence which are here briefly reviewed and discussed.
