RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Different methods have been proposed to study skeletal muscle mass in sarcopenia diagnosis, although all have inherent drawbacks. The aim of this study was to evaluate the utility of muscle ultrasound in muscle assessment by studying its correlation with dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and calf circumference (CC), cut-off values for ultrasound-based detection of low muscle mass, and the correlation with muscle performance. METHODS: Fifty-seven participants older than 70 years, underwent a muscle ultrasound study, DXA, calf circumference (CC) and functional assessment. Ultrasound measurements were taken in the femoral quadriceps (transverse plane) and in the medial gastrocnemius (transverse and longitudinal planes). Muscle function was assessed by gait speed, Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB) and grip strength. RESULTS: Median age was 78.9 years (IQR 74.9 - 81.9), and 33 were women (57.9%). We found good correlation between muscle thickness of gastrocnemius muscle in transverse and longitudinal plane and appendicular lean mass measured by DXA (r=0.546 and r=0.689 respectively) and good correlations between muscle thickness of gastrocnemius in transverse and longitudinal plane with CC (r=0.651 and r=0.447 respectively). The thickness of gastrocnemius medialis optimal cut-off points for low muscle mass were 18,5mm in the transverse plane (Sensitivity: 77,8%, Specificity: 77,1%), and 17.3mm in the longitudinal plane (Sensitivity: 100%,Specificity: 68.8%). Muscle thickness was also significantly correlated with gait speed, SPPB and grip strength. CONCLUSIONS: Measures of gastrocnemius medialis thickness obtained by ultrasound are reliable and correlate well with DXA and CC values and muscle performance.

RESUMO

Climate change is expected to severely affect cropping systems and food production in many parts of the world unless local adaptation can ameliorate these impacts. Ensembles of crop simulation models can be useful tools for assessing if proposed adaptation options are capable of achieving target yields, whilst also quantifying the share of uncertainty in the simulated crop impact resulting from the crop models themselves. Although some studies have analysed the influence of ensemble size on model outcomes, the effect of ensemble composition has not yet been properly appraised. Moreover, results and derived recommendations typically rely on averaged ensemble simulation results without accounting sufficiently for the spread of model outcomes. Therefore, we developed an Ensemble Outcome Agreement (EOA) index, which analyses the effect of changes in composition and size of a multi-model ensemble (MME) to evaluate the level of agreement between MME outcomes with respect to a given hypothesis (e.g. that adaptation measures result in positive crop responses). We analysed the recommendations of a previous study performed with an ensemble of 17 crop models and testing 54 adaptation options for rainfed winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) at Lleida (NE Spain) under perturbed conditions of temperature, precipitation and atmospheric CO2 concentration. Our results confirmed that most adaptations recommended in the previous study have a positive effect. However, we also showed that some options did not remain recommendable in specific conditions if different ensembles were considered. Using EOA, we were able to identify the adaptation options for which there is high confidence in their effectiveness at enhancing yields, even under severe climate perturbations. These include substituting spring wheat for winter wheat combined with earlier sowing dates and standard or longer duration cultivars, or introducing supplementary irrigation, the latter increasing EOA values in all cases. There is low confidence in recovering yields to baseline levels, although this target could be attained for some adaptation options under moderate climate perturbations. Recommendations derived from such robust results may provide crucial information for stakeholders seeking to implement adaptation measures.

RESUMO

Electric noise can be an important limitation for applications of conducting elements in the nanometer size range. The intrinsic electrical noise of prospective materials for opto-spintronics applications like ZnO has not yet been characterized. In this study, we have investigated the conductivity fluctuations in 10 nm thick current paths produced by proton implantation of ZnO microwires at room temperature. The voltage noise under a constant dc current bias in undoped, as well as in Li-doped microwires, is characterized by [Formula: see text] power spectra with [Formula: see text]. The noise intensity scales with the square of the bias current pointing to bias-independent resistivity fluctuations as a source of the observed noise. The normalized power spectral density appears inversely proportional to the number of carriers in the probed sample volume, in agreement with the phenomenological Hooge law. For the proton-implanted ZnO microwire and at 1 Hz we obtain a normalized power spectral density as low as [Formula: see text] Hz(-1).

RESUMO

The magneto-transport properties of single proton-implanted ZnO and of Li(7%)-doped ZnO microwires have been studied. The as-grown microwires were highly insulating and not magnetic. After proton implantation the Li(7%) doped ZnO microwires showed a non-monotonous behavior of the negative magneto-resistance (MR) at temperature above 150 K. This is in contrast to the monotonous NMR observed below 50 K for proton-implanted ZnO. The observed difference in the transport properties of the wires is related to the amount of stable Zn vacancies created at the near surface region by the proton implantation and Li doping. The magnetic field dependence of the resistance might be explained by the formation of a magnetic/non-magnetic heterostructure in the wire after proton implantation.

RESUMO

The influence of irrigation frequency on the onset and development of Verticillium wilt of olive (VWO) was studied. A split-plot design in microplots with naturally infested soil was established for studying four irrigation frequencies for three olive cultivars with differing levels of disease resistance. Final disease incidence (DI) and mortality in 'Picual' plants subjected to daily irrigation treatment (T1) reached values of 100 and 63%, respectively. For Picual-T1 samples, the area under the disease progress curve values were significantly different between 15 December 2012 and 15 July 2013 (14.8 to 42.8%) compared with the average results of the other treatments, which were weekly (T2), biweekly (T3), and deficit (T4) (0.4 to 11.5%). No significant differences between the irrigation treatments were observed in 'Arbequina', although the DI progressed consistently (60% in all treatments). In 'Frantoio', little disease developed. We conclude that a daily irrigation treatment encourages VWO development in susceptible Picual. Therefore, in susceptible cultivars growing in infested soils under daily irrigation regimes, the extension of irrigation frequency may reduce disease incidence. In the context of an integrated control, the use of resistant cultivars seems to be more relevant than the detrimental effects observed in frequent irrigation schedules.
