RESUMO

Recent studies have suggested the presence of moonlight mediated behaviour in avian aerial insectivores, such as swifts. Here, we use the combined analysis of state-of-the-art activity logger data across three swift species, the common, pallid and alpine swifts, to quantify flight height and activity in responses to moonlight-driven crepuscular and nocturnal light conditions. Our results show a significant response in flight heights to moonlight illuminance for common and pallid swifts, i.e. when moon illuminance increased flight height also increased, while a moonlight-driven response is absent in alpine swifts. We show a weak relationship between night-time illuminance-driven responses and twilight ascending behaviour, suggesting a decoupling of both crepuscular and night-time behaviour. We suggest that swifts optimize their flight behaviour to adapt to favourable night-time light conditions, driven by light-responsive and size-dependent vertical insect stratification and weather conditions.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the accuracy of torque, tip and rotation and linear intra-arch movements yielded by passive self-ligating lingual straight-wire appliances with brackets featuring square slots. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-five adult Caucasian patients (16 females and 9 males; mean age 26.5 ± 4.3 years) with Class I or mild Class II head-to-head malocclusion were orthodontically treated via passive lingual self-ligating straight-wire appliances (ALIAS, Ormco, Orange, CA) with no extraction. Records were retrospectively analysed, and digital models of pre-treatment (T0), planned (T1) and achieved (T2) phase were acquired for both arches in each patient via an intraoral scanner (Medit I500 (iScan Medit, Seoul, Korea). VAM software (Vectra, Canfield Scientific, Fairfield, NJ, USA) was used to measure both angular values (torque, tip and rotation) and linear intra-arch widths (between canines, first and second premolars and first and second molars). Measurements were obtained for all the movements investigated for each tooth group (incisors, canines, premolars and molars), by arch (maxillary and mandibular) and for both arches at T0, T1 and T2. The accuracy of angular values was compared using Student's t-test against a hypothetical 100%, and among the various tooth groups by post-hoc tests. Transverse linear measurements were investigated by means of the non-parametric Friedman test. The significance threshold was set at 0.05. RESULTS: The mean accuracy of angular values was 77.25 ± 7.71% for torque, 78.41 ± 6.17% for tip and 77.99 ± 6.58% for rotation. In all cases, however, there was a significant difference between planned and achieved movements, and accuracy was significantly lower than the hypothetical 100% for all tooth groups, individual arches and dentition (p < 0.001). For intra-arch diameters, the greatest accuracy values were found for the anterior sectors (83.54 ± 5.19% for the maxillary inter-canine distance) and the lowest for the posterior sectors (67.28% for the maxillary inter-second molar distance). CONCLUSION: Straight-wire lingual treatment with passive self-ligating appliances featuring with square slot displayed excellent clinical accuracy, albeit with statistical accuracy decreasing antero-posteriorly.

Wheeled Mobile Robots (WMRs) are systems with multiple industrial and civilian applications. Trajectory tracking is essential in many applications, such as surveillance, monitoring, and autonomous driving. However, in practical applications, a WMR is always affected by kinematic disturbances, state estimation error, and measurement noise, which may diminish the system's performance. Hence, this work proposes a novel observer-based H∞ controller that is robust against matched and unmatched disturbances. The proposed methodology compensates for disturbances through a disturbance observer, transforming the closed-loop system into a new one affected by uniformly bounded disturbances. Then, an H∞ controller is designed to make the WMR track a desired reference signal. A formal stability proof demonstrates the feasibility of the new proposal. Also, feedback and finite-time controllers are used to assess the novel controller. Numerical simulations and experimental results with a scaled autonomous car-like robot demonstrate the novel controller's efficiency and outstanding performance, despite disturbances when compared against finite-time and feedback controllers.

BACKGROUND: Vascular access in hypotensive trauma patients is challenging. Little evidence exists on the time required and success rates of vascular access types. We hypothesized that intraosseous (IO) access would be faster and more successful than peripheral intravenous (PIV) and central venous catheter (CVC) access in hypotensive patients. METHODS: An EAST prospective multicenter trial was performed; 19 centers provided data. Trauma video review was used to evaluate the resuscitations of hypotensive (systolic blood pressure ≤90 mm Hg) trauma patients. Highly granular data from video recordings were abstracted. Data collected included vascular access attempt type, location, success rate, and procedural time. Demographic and injury-specific variables were obtained from the medical record. Success rates, procedural durations, and time to resuscitation were compared among access strategies (IO vs. PIV vs. CVC). RESULTS: There were 1,410 access attempts that occurred in 581 patients with a median age of 40 years (27-59 years) and an Injury Severity Score of 22 [10-34]. Nine hundred thirty-two PIV, 204 IO, and 249 CVC were attempted. Seventy percent of access attempts were successful but were significantly less likely to be successful in females (64% vs. 71%, p = 0.01). Median time to any access was 5.0 minutes (3.2-8.0 minutes). Intraosseous had higher success rates than PIV or CVC (93% vs. 67% vs. 59%, p < 0.001) and remained higher after subsequent failures (second attempt, 85% vs. 59% vs. 69%, p = 0.08; third attempt, 100% vs. 33% vs. 67%, p = 0.002). Duration varied by access type (IO, 36 [23-60] seconds; PIV, 44 [31-61] seconds; CVC 171 [105-298]seconds) and was significantly different between IO versus CVC ( p < 0.001) and PIV versus CVC ( p < 0.001) but not PIV versus IO. Time to resuscitation initiation was shorter in patients whose initial access attempt was IO, 5.8 minutes versus 6.7 minutes ( p = 0.015). This was more pronounced in patients arriving to the hospital with no established access (5.7 minutes vs. 7.5 minutes, p = 0.001). CONCLUSION: Intraosseous is as fast as PIV and more likely to be successful compared with other access strategies in hypotensive trauma patients. Patients whose initial access attempt was IO were resuscitated more expeditiously. Intraosseous access should be considered a first line therapy in hypotensive trauma patients. Leishmania donovani causes anthroponotic visceral leishmaniasis, responsible for about 50,000 annual deaths worldwide. Current therapies have considerable side effects. Drug resistance has been reported and no vaccine is available nowadays. The development of undifferentiated promastigotes in the sand fly vector’s gut leads to the promastigote form that is highly infective to the mammalian host. Fully differentiated promastigotes play a crucial role in the initial stages of mammalian host infection before internalization in the host phagocytic cell. Therefore, the study of protein levels in the promastigote stage is relevant for disease control, and proteomics analysis is an ideal source of vaccine candidate discovery. This study aims to get insight into the protein levels during the differentiation process of promastigotes by 2DE-MALDI-TOF/TOF. This partial proteome analysis has led to the identification of 75 proteins increased in at least one of the L. donovani promastigote differentiation and growth phases. This study has revealed the differential abundance of said proteins during growth and differentiation. According to previous studies, some are directly involved in parasite survival or are immunostimulatory. The parasite survival–related proteins are ascorbate peroxidase; cystathionine β synthase; an elongation factor 1β paralog; elongation factor 2; endoribonuclease L-PSP; an iron superoxide dismutase paralog; GDP-mannose pyrophosphorylase; several heat shock proteins—HSP70, HSP83-17, mHSP70-rel, HSP110; methylthioadenosine phosphorylase; two thiol-dependent reductase 1 paralogs; transitional endoplasmic reticulum ATPase; and the AhpC thioredoxin paralog. The confirmed immunostimulatory proteins are the heat shock proteins, enolase, and protein kinase C receptor analog. The potential immunostimulatory molecules according to findings in patogenic bacteria are fructose-1,6-diphophate aldolase, dihydrolipoamide acetyltransferase, isocitrate dehydrogenase...(AU)

Melanoma is the most aggressive and lethal type of skin cancer, characterized by therapeutic resistance. In this context, the present study aimed to investigate the cytotoxic potential of manool, a diterpene from Salvia officinalis L., in human (A375) and murine (B16F10) melanoma cell lines. The analysis of cytotoxicity using the XTT assay showed the lowest IC50 after 48 h of treatment with the manool, being 17.6 and 18.2 µg/ml for A375 and B16F10, respectively. A selective antiproliferative effect of manool was observed on the A375 cells based on the colony formation assay, showing an IC50 equivalent to 5.6 µg/ml. The manool treatments led to 43.5% inhibition of the A375 cell migration at a concentration of 5.0 µg/ml. However, it did not affect cell migration in the B16F10 cells. Cell cycle analysis revealed that the manool interfered in the cell cycle of the A375 cells, blocking the G2/M phase. No changes in the cell cycle were observed in the B16F10 cells. Interestingly, manool did not induce apoptosis in the A375 cells, but apoptosis was observed after treatment of the B16F10 cells. Additionally, manool showed an antimelanoma effect in a reconstructed human skin model. Furthermore, in silico studies, showed that manool is stabilized in the active sites of the tubulin dimer with comparable energy concerning taxol, indicating that both structures can inhibit the proliferation of cancer cells. Altogether, it is concluded that manool, through the modulation of the cell cycle, presents a selective antiproliferative activity and a potential antimelanoma effect.

Angola, in the western coast of Africa, has been through dramatic social events that have led to the near-disappearance of native swine populations, and the recent introduction of European exotic breeds has also contributed to the erosion of this native swine repertoire. In an effort to investigate the genetic basis of native pigs in Angola (ANG) we have generated whole genomes from animals of a remote local pig population in Huambo province, which we have compared with 78 genomes of European and Asian pig breeds as well as European and Asian wild boars that are currently in public domain. Analyses of population structure showed that ANG pigs grouped within the European cluster and were clearly separated from Asian pig breeds. Pairwise F ST ranged from 0.14 to 0.26, ANG pigs display lower levels of genetic differentiation towards European breeds. Finally, we have identified candidate regions for selection using a complementary approach based on various methods. All results suggest that selection towards feed efficiency and metabolism has occurred. Moreover, all analysis identified CDKAL1 gene, which is related with insulin and cholesterol metabolism, as a candidate gene overlapping signatures of selection unique to ANG pigs. This study presents the first assessment of the genetic relationship between ANG pigs and other world breeds and uncovers selection signatures that may indicate adaptation features unique to this important genetic resource.

In the current work, we describe the synthesis of 1,4-dihydropyridine (1,4-DHP) derivatives via Hantzsch multicomponent reaction and their evaluation as photosystem II (PSII) inhibitors through chlorophyll a fluorescence bioassay. Among all the compounds tested, 1,1'-(2,4,6-trimethyl-1,4-dihydropyridine-3,5-diyl)bis(ethan-1-one) (4b) showed best results, reducing the parameters performance index on absorption basis (PIabs ) and electron transport per reaction center by 61 % and 49 %, respectively, as compared to the control. These results indicate the inhibitory activity of PSII over the electron transport chain. Additionally, a molecular docking approach using the protein D1 (PDB code 4V82) was performed in order to assess the structure-activity relationship among the 1,4-DHP derivatives over the PSII, which revealed that both, size of the group at position 4 and the carbonyl groups at the dihydropyridine ring are important for the ligand's interaction, particularly for the hydrogen-bonding interaction with the residues His215, Ser264, and Phe265. Thus, the optimization of these molecular features is the aim of our research group to extend the knowledge of PSII electron chain inhibitors and the establishment of new potent bioactive molecular scaffolds.

Praziquantel (PZQ) is the only drug available for community-based control programs which aim to reduce the prevalence and morbidity associated with schistosomiasis. Here, we synthesized and evaluated the schistosomicidal, biochemical and cytotoxic activities of EF24, a synthetic curcumin analog, against different isolates of Schistosoma mansoni. EF24 elicited marked phenotypic alterations at 10 µM against schistosomula and 42-day-old adult worms of the Naval Medical Research Institute (NMRI) isolate. EF24 had 50% effective concentration (EC50) values of <10 µM against the Luis Evangelista (LE), Sergipe (SE), Belo Horizonte (BH) and Belo Horizonte less sensitive to PZQ (BH < PZQ) isolates of adult S. mansoni; however, the respective sensitivities of these isolates differed. Changes in the parasite included, vacuolization of the tegument and focal lysis of the interstitial tissue and muscle layers. Against 28-day-old juvenile worms (LE isolate), EF24 was about three times more potent than PZQ. After 6 h at 12.5 µM, EF24 increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the activity of the antioxidant enzyme, glutathione-S-transferase (GST), by 32 and 19% in female and male adult worms, respectively. By contrast, after 6 h at 12.5 µM glutathione reductase (GR) activity decreased by 43 and 30%, and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activity decreased by 67 and 44% in females and males, respectively. EF24 was less cytotoxic to mammalian host cells than to S. mansoni, with selectivity indexes (SIs) of 1.8-3.4 and 2.7-7.5 for juvenile and adult worms, respectively. Given the current evidence for the in vitro schistosomicidal effect of EF24, the structure-activity relationship of additional analogs to identify new candidates for schistosomiasis treatment is warranted.

En los últimos años a nivel nacional se ha visto un decaimiento de la cobertura en niños menores de 5 años siendo la región selva la más afectada. El presente estudio tuvo como objetivo analizar los factores maternos y sociales asociados al no cumplimiento del esquema de vacunación nacional en niños de 1 a 5 años en la selva peruana en el año 2019, con diseño observacional, analítico empleando la base de datos de la Encuesta Demográfica y de Salud Familiar-(ENDES) 2019 comprendiendo los menores de 5 años en Perú en ese mismo año, se seleccionaron las variables de estudio y se utilizó el programa SPSS 26.0 para el análisis. Fueron 4373 encuestas seleccionadas; se evidenció que el 57.5% de 1 a 5 años tienen el esquema de vacunación incompleto, cuyos factores asociados fueron no tener seguro de salud (ORa 1.72; p<0,01, IC95% 1,39-2,13), la pobreza (ORa=1,427, p<0,01, IC95% 1,89-1,71), lengua materna nativa (ORa=1,50, p<0,01, IC95% 1,13-2,0), problemas para acudir al centro de salud[1] (ORa=1,213, p=0,02, IC95% 1,02-1,44), vivir fuera de la ciudad (ORa= 1,31, p<0,01, IC95% 1,09- 1,58), edad menor a 24 años de madre/apoderado (ORa=1,38, p<0,01, IC95% 1,186-1,619). Lo que indica una asociación estadísticamente significativa entre algunos de los factores maternos y sociales estudiados con el no cumplimiento del esquema nacional de vacunación.


In the past decade, levels of coverage on children vaccination had been decreasing nationwide, even more in the Peruvian jungle, reason why is an important public health's subject to attend. The purpose of this investigation was to analyze maternal and social factors that are associated with incomplete vaccination schedules on children under 5 years old on the Peruvian jungle. It is an observational, analytic investigation, using a secondary source from the Demographic and Family survey (ENDES) from 2019, where is found the information of all the under 5 years old with the healthcare card of oral information given by the mother. Then after selecting the chosen variables, we used the SPSS statistic program for the posterior analysis. Of the 4373 surveys studied; it was shown that 57.5% of children under 5 years have the incomplete vaccination schedule. The multivariate analysis found that non-compliance with the vaccination schedule associated with maternal and social factors such as not having health insurance (ORa 1.72; p<0.01, IC95% 1.39-2,13), poverty (ORa-1,427, p<0.01, IC95% 1.89-1.71), native mother tongue (ORa-1.50, p<0.01, IC-1.13-2,0), problems attending the health center (ORa-1,213, p=0.02, IC95% 1.02-1.44), live outside the city (ORa-1.31, p<0.01, IC95% 1.09- 1.58), age under the age of 24 as a mother/guardian (ORa-1.38, p<0.01, IC95% 1,186-1,619). Not having health insurance, living in poverty, having trouble going to the health center, living outside the city, having a different mother tongue than Spanish and age under 24 are factors associated with non-compliance with the vaccination schedule.

Objective: Controlling the incisal inclination is fundamental in orthodontics. However, the relationship between the inclination prescription and its clinical outcome is not obvious, and the incisal inclination changes generated by different bracket prescriptions were investigated. Methods: Twenty-eight non-extraction dental Class II patients (15 females, 13 males; mean age = 12.9) were retrospectively analyzed. Patients were treated using passive self-ligating fixed appliances with three inclination prescriptions for maxillary incisors (high, standard, low), and two for mandibular incisors (standard, low). Clinical outcomes were compared among different prescriptions, and regression analysis was used to explain the effects of bracket prescriptions and to understand the prescription selection criteria (α = 0.05). Results: For maxillary central incisors, low and high prescriptions were related to linguoversion (p = 0.046) and labioversion (p = 0.005), respectively, while standard prescription maintained the initial dental inclination. Maxillary lateral incisors did not show significant changes. For mandibular incisors, low prescription led to linguoversion (p = 0.005 for central incisors, p = 0.010 for lateral incisors), while standard prescription led to labioversion (p = 0.045 for central incisors, p = 0.005 for lateral incisors). The factors affecting inclination changes were the imposed change and selected prescription, while prescription selection was influenced by the initial dental inclination and initial intercanine distance. Conclusions: The direction of correction of incisal inclination can be controlled by choosing a certain prescription, but the final inclination may show limited consistency with it. The amount of imposed inclination change was the most relevant predictor of the clinical outcome.

Assessing the carbon footprint of marine bivalve aquaculture demands an accurate estimation of the CO2 release associated to capital goods and aquaculture operations but also to the metabolic CO2 budget of the cultured species. Nowadays, there are discrepancies on the processes to include in that budget, how to estimate them, and which scale should be applied, from individual to ecosystem. Site-specific environmental conditions and culture methods also affect significantly the estimates. Here, we have gathered environmental, biochemical and metabolic data from published scientific articles, reports and existing databases to present the metabolic CO2 budget for mussel aquaculture in the coastal inlets of the Northwest Iberian upwelling. We analyse the contribution of mussel flesh and shell production jointly and separately. At the individual scale, the shell CO2 budget is estimated from CO2 removal by shell matrix protein synthesis and CO2 release during calcification and respiration to support shell maintenance. Organic carbon in mussel flesh and CO2 released by respiration to support flesh maintenance contribute to the flesh CO2 budget. Only calcification and respiration processes are considered when estimating the metabolic carbon footprint of individual mussels because organic carbon in mussel flesh and shell returns to the atmosphere as CO2 in a relatively short period. While the metabolic carbon footprint associated to mussel shell remains constant at 365 kg CO2 per ton of shell, it varies from 92 to 578 kg CO2 per ton of mussel flesh. This large variability depends on mussel seeding time and harvesting size, due to the differential seasonal growth patterns of flesh and shell. Inclusion of the CO2 potentially immobilised in mussel faeces buried in the sediments would lead to a reduction of the metabolic carbon footprint estimates by up to 6 % compared with the individual estimates.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Despite decades-long involvement of trauma survivors in hospital-based program delivery, their roles and impact on trauma care have not been previously described. We aimed to characterize the literature on trauma survivor involvement in hospital-based injury prevention, violence intervention and peer support programs to map what is currently known and identify future research opportunities. METHODS: A scoping review was conducted following the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) methodology. Articles were identified through electronic databases and gray literature. Included articles described hospital-based injury prevention programs, violence intervention programs and peer support programs that involved trauma survivors leveraging their injury experiences to counsel others. Studies were screened and data were abstracted in duplicate. Data were synthesized generally and by program type. RESULTS: Thirty-six published articles and four program reports were included. Peer support programs were described in 21 articles, mainly involving trauma survivors as mentors or peer supporters. Peer support programs' most commonly reported outcome was participant satisfaction (n = 6), followed by participant self-efficacy (n = 5), depression (n = 4), and community integration (n = 3). Eleven injury prevention studies were included, all involving trauma survivors as speakers in youth targeted programs. Injury prevention studies commonly reported outcomes of participants' risk behaviors and awareness (n = 9). Violence intervention programs were included in four articles involving trauma survivors as intervention counsellors. Recidivism rate was the most commonly reported outcome (n = 3). Variability exists across and within program types when reporting on involved trauma survivors' gender, age, selection and training, duration of involvement and number of survivors involved. Outcomes related to trauma survivors' own experiences and the impacts to them of program involvement were under-studied. CONCLUSIONS: Significant opportunity exists to fill current knowledge gaps in trauma survivors' involvement in trauma program delivery. There is a need to describe more fully who involved trauma survivors are to inform the development of effective future interventions.

P-type and n-type metal oxide semiconductors are widely used in the manufacture of gas sensing materials, due to their excellent electronic, electrical and electrocatalytic properties. Hematite (α-Fe2O3) compound has been reported as a promising material for sensing broad types of gases, due to its affordability, good stability and semiconducting properties. In the present work, the efficient and easy-to-implement sol-gel method has been used to synthesizeα-Fe2O3nanoparticles (NPs). The TGA-DSC characterizations of the precursor gel provided information about the phase transformation temperature and the mass percentage of the hematite NPs. X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy data analyses indicated the formation of two iron oxide phases (hematite and magnetite) when the NPs are subjected to thermal treatment at 400 °C. Meanwhile, only the hematite phase was determined for thermal annealing above 500 °C up to 800 °C. Besides, the crystallite size shows an increasing trend with the thermal annealing and no defined morphology. A clear reduction of surface defects, associated with oxygen vacancies was also evidenced when the annealing temperature was increased, resulting in changes on the electrical properties of hematite NPs. Resistive gas-sensing tests were carried out using hematite NPs + glycerin paste, to detect quaternary ammonium compounds. Room-temperature high sensitivity values (Sr âˆ¼ 4) have been obtained during the detection of ∼1 mM quaternary ammonium compounds vapor. The dependence of the sensitivity on the particle size, the mass ratio of NPs with respect to the organic ligand, changes in the dielectric properties, and the electrical conduction mechanism of gas sensing was discussed.

In nature, the deconstruction of plant carbohydrates is carried out by carbohydrate-active enzymes (CAZymes). A high-throughput (HTP) strategy was used to isolate and clone 1476 genes obtained from a diverse library of recombinant CAZymes covering a variety of sequence-based families, enzyme classes, and source organisms. All genes were successfully isolated by either PCR (61%) or gene synthesis (GS) (39%) and were subsequently cloned into Escherichia coli expression vectors. Most proteins (79%) were obtained at a good yield during recombinant expression. A significantly lower number (p < 0.01) of proteins from eukaryotic (57.7%) and archaeal (53.3%) origin were soluble compared to bacteria (79.7%). Genes obtained by GS gave a significantly lower number (p = 0.04) of soluble proteins while the green fluorescent protein tag improved protein solubility (p = 0.05). Finally, a relationship between the amino acid composition and protein solubility was observed. Thus, a lower percentage of non-polar and higher percentage of negatively charged amino acids in a protein may be a good predictor for higher protein solubility in E. coli. The HTP approach presented here is a powerful tool for producing recombinant CAZymes that can be used for future studies of plant cell wall degradation. Successful production and expression of soluble recombinant proteins at a high rate opens new possibilities for the high-throughput production of targets from limitless sources.

Leishmania parasites cause outstanding levels of morbidity and mortality in many developing countries in tropical and subtropical regions. Numerous gene expression profiling studies have been performed comparing different Leishmania species' life-cycles and stage forms in regard to their distinct infective ability. Based on expression patterns, homology to human orthologues, in silico HLA-binding predictions, and annotated functions, we were able to select several vaccine candidates which are currently under study. One of these candidates is the Leishmania infantum ubiquitin-conjugating enzyme E2 (LiUBC1), whose relative levels, subcellular location, in vitro infectivity in the U937 myeloid human cell model, and protection levels in Syrian hamsters against L. infantum infection were studied herein. LiUBC1 displays a low level of similarity with the mammalian orthologs and relevant structure differences, such as the C-terminal domain, which is absent in the human ortholog. LiUBC1 is present in highly infective promastigotes. Knock-in parasites overexpressing the enzyme increased their infectivity, according to in vitro experiments. Syrian hamsters immunized with the recombinant LiUBC1 protein did not show any parasite burden in the spleen, unlike the infection control group. The IFN-γ transcript levels in splenocytes were significantly higher in the LiUBC1 immunized group. Therefore, LiUBC1 induced partial protection against L. infantum in the Syrian hamster model.

Solving the orbital stabilization of a class of underactuated systems near its open-loop unstable equilibrium point is a challenging task but useful in repetitive tasks. This paper addresses the control problem of an inverted cart-pendulum's motion driven by a two-relay controller. This controller is tuned to set the desired amplitude and frequency using the locus of the perturbed relay system, which is a frequency-domain method. We solved the periodic motion of the pendulum occurring in its open-loop unstable equilibrium point. The experimental results showed that the proposed two-relay controller forced the pendulum into a periodic motion around the upright position.

Objective@#Controlling the incisal inclination is fundamental in orthodontics. However, the relationship between the inclination prescription and its clinical outcome is not obvious, and the incisal inclination changes generated by different bracket prescriptions were investigated. @*Methods@#Twenty-eight nonextraction dental Class II patients (15 females, 13 males; mean age = 12.9) were retrospectively analyzed. Patients were treated using passive self-ligating fixed appliances with three inclination prescriptions for maxillary incisors (high, standard, low), and two for mandibular incisors (standard, low). Clinical outcomes were compared among different prescriptions, and regression analysis was used to explain the effects of bracket prescriptions and to understand the prescription selection criteria (α = 0.05). @*Results@#For maxillary central incisors, low and high prescriptions were related to linguoversion (p = 0.046) and labioversion (p = 0.005), respectively, while standard prescription maintained the initial dental inclination. Maxillary lateral incisors did not show significant changes. For mandibular incisors, low prescription led to linguoversion (p = 0.005 for central incisors, p = 0.010 for lateral incisors), while standard prescription led to labioversion (p = 0.045 for central incisors, p = 0.005 for lateral incisors). The factors affecting inclination changes were the imposed change and selected prescription, while prescription selection was influenced by the initial dental inclination and initial intercanine distance. @*Conclusions@#The direction of correction of incisal inclination can be controlled by choosing a certain prescription, but the final inclination may show limited consistency with it. The amount of imposed inclination change was the most relevant predictor of the clinical outcome.

The objectives of the current study were (1) to evaluate the effect of sprouting on protein, amino acids, fats, fatty acids, starch, total soluble carbohydrates, and ß-D-glucan content of barley grains and (2) to know the content of these nutrients in the morphological fractions of sprouts: green shoot, residual structure of sprouted grain (RSSG), residual structure of sprouted grain plus unsprouted grain (RSSG plus UG), and root fractions and to determine the proportion of each of these fractions (on fresh and dry basis) in the sprout biomass. Barley grain was sprouted in a commercial germination chamber for a period of 6 days. Raw grain was used as a control. Results showed that crude protein, ether extract, total soluble carbohydrates, and cellulose content increased, whereas starch and ß-D-glucan content decreased in sprouted when compared with the control grain. Amino acid and fatty acid profiles were also affected. Thus, aspartic acid, threonine, alanine, valine, isoleucine, lysine, and tryptophan content increased and only that of glutamic acid decreased after sprouting. Regarding fatty acids, an increase in the relative concentration of C18 : 0 and C18:3n-3 and a decrease in that of C18:1n-9 were detected. Partitioning of sprouted barley into three morphological component fractions showed that the residual structures of sprouted grains plus unsprouted grain fraction made up 82.9% and 93.6% of sprout biomass, on fresh and DM basis, respectively, and the remainder was provided by the root fraction, 10.3% and 3.2%, respectively, and by the green shoot fraction, 6.8% and 3.1%, respectively. The three morphological fractions differed in the content of the most analyzed nutrients.
