RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Thoracotomy under general anaesthesia is one of the most difficult surgeries and is prone to result in postoperative complications. This study explored risk factors for postoperative dysuria in patients undergoing thoracotomy under general anaesthesia to provide a reference for the formulation and selection of subsequent clinical management programs. METHODS: Patients undergoing thoracotomy under general anaesthesia (n = 179) admitted to our hospital from June 2019 to June 2021 were selected. They were divided into dysuria group (n = 79) and normal urination group (n = 100) according to whether they had dysuria after surgery. Logistic regression analysis was conducted to explore risk factors affecting postoperative dysuria. RESULTS: Univariate analysis showed that dysuria was related to gender, age, surgical time, intraoperative and postoperative infusion volume, usage time of analgesic pump and retention time of urethral catheter (p < 0.001). Logistic regression analysis showed that male, age ≥60 years, surgical time ≥120 min, intraoperative infusion volume >1200 mL, postoperative infusion volume >800 mL, analgesic pump usage time ≥18 h and urethral catheter retention time of ≥72 h were risk factors for postoperative dysuria. CONCLUSIONS: The occurrence of postoperative dysuria in patients undergoing thoracotomy under general anaesthesia is related to gender, age, surgical time, intraoperative infusion volume, postoperative infusion volume, usage time of analgesic pump and retention time of urethral catheter. Clinical attention should be given to this patient group, and targeted intervention measures should be implemented.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the impact of oral intake of Hyaluronic Acid (HA) on skin health. BACKGROUND: HA, an endogenous substance in the human body, plays a key role in skin health. However, its concentration in the skin decreases significantly with age. Previous studies suggested that oral intake of HA can supplement the body's HA level, but did not reveal the effects on different age groups and skin types. METHODS: A double-blind, randomized clinical trial with 129 female participants, covering young and elderly groups and differnet skin types, was conducted to assess the efficacy of orally administered HA on skin health. RESULTS: Oral administration of HA significantly promoted skin hydration after 2-8 weeks among both young and elderly groups. Skin tone improvement was observed after 4-8 weeks, while an increase in epidermal thickness was noted after 12 weeks. CONCLUSION: This study provides direct evidence supporting the clinical efficacy of oral intake of HA in promoting skin health.

BACKGROUND: Type 1 diabetes (T1D), an autoimmune disease, occurs most commonly in children. Identifying altered gene expression in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) of T1D may lead to new strategies for preserving or improving ß-ell function in patients with T1D. METHODS: The Gene Expression Omnibus database was searched for microarray studies in PBMCs of T1D. Subsequently, gene expression datasets from multiple microarray studies were integrated to obtain differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between T1D and normal controls (NC). Gene function analysis was performed to determine the functions of the DEGs identified. RESULTS: Four microarray studies were available for analysis, including 199 T1D samples and 74 NC samples. Analysis revealed 695 genes that were significantly differentially expressed in PBMCs from T1D compared with NC samples, with 450 upregulated and 245 downregulated. Signal transduction (gene ontology [GO]: 0007165; false discovery rate [FDR] = 1.54 × 10-7 ) and protein binding (GO: 0005515; FDR = 2.93 × 10-24 ) were significantly enriched for the GO categories of biological processes and molecular functions, respectively. The most significant pathway in the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes analysis was arachidonic acid metabolism (FDR = 1.44 × 10-3 ). Protein-protein interaction network analysis showed that the significant hub proteins contained immature colon carcinoma transcript 1 (ICT1; degree = 214; clustering coefficient [C] = 4.39 × 10-5 ), zinc finger and BTB domain containing 16 (ZBTB16; degree = 112; C = 8.04 × 10-4 ), and SERTA domain containing 1 (SERTAD1; degree = 38; C = 0.0014). CONCLUSIONS: This integrated analysis will help develop improved therapies and interventions for T1D by identifying novel drug targets.

Canalization is the representative process and landscape of wetland reclamation. A typical ditch system of four levels near the Honghe National Nature Reserve in Sanjiang Plain was selected. Deposition plates were set on the sediments along the ditch level and the remained natural wetland nearby was quantitatively sampled for two years as the control. The deposition fluxes, total iron concentration, iron oxides and their components, as well as biogenic elements in the sediments collected by deposition plates were measured. The results showed that the litter, mud/sand and total deposition fluxes showed no significant differences between different ditch levels, with the means of (57.00 ± 16.90) g x (m2 x a)(-1), (3 997.57 ± 798.98) g x (m2 x a)(-1) and (4054.57 ± 792.91) g x (m2 x a)(-1), respectively. The litter flux decreased with the increase of ditch level, and the flux in the natural wetland [ (120.26 ± 19.42) g x (m2 x a)(-1) ] was significantly greater than that of the ditches. The mud/sand [ (35.41 ± 11.15 ) g x (m2 x a)(-1)] and total deposition fluxes [ (155.67 ± 20.75) g x ( m2 x a](-1) ] were significantly smaller than those of the ditches. There were no significant differences in the total iron between different ditches and natural wetland, while the free iron oxide content in the ditch sediments was significantly lower than that of natural wetland sediment. Except for the main ditch, the amorphous and complex iron oxides in the other ditch and natural wetland sediments showed no significant differences. The free degree of the iron oxide in ditch sediments was 60.2% of that in the natural wetland, while the differences in the complex degree and the activated degree were insignificant. The differences in the total organic carbon, total nitrogen and total phosphorus were insignificant, and all were smaller than those of the natural wetland, with the percentages of 14.6%, 31.6% and 41.0%, respectively. It could be concluded that the effects of canalization on iron and biogenic elements were significant. Consequently, rational agricultural water managements are strongly recommended to avoid the potential environmental and ecological risks caused by canalization in Sanjiang Plain.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the efficacy of the D-R model for defining trends in the appearance of Ceftazidime-resistant Escherichia coli. METHODS: Actual data related to the manifestation of Ceftazidime-resistant E. coli spanning years 1996-2009 were collected from the China National Knowledge Internet. These data originated from 430 publications encompassing 1004 citations of resistance. The GM(1,1) and the novel D-R models were used to fit current data and from this, predict trends in the appearance of the drug-resistant phenotype. The results were evaluated by Relative Standard Error (RSE), Mean Absolute Deviation (MAD) and Mean Absolute Error (MAE). RESULTS: Results from the D-R model showed a rapid increase in the appearance of Ceftazidime-resistant E. coli in this region of the world. These results were considered accurate based upon the minor values calculated for RSE, MAD and MAE, and were equivalent to or better than those generated by the GM(1,1) model. CONCLUSION: The D-R model which was originally created to define trends in the transmission of swine viral diseases can be adapted to evaluating trends in the appearance of Ceftazidime-resistant E. coli. Using only a limited amount of data to initiate the study, our predictions closely mirrored the changes in drug resistance rates which showed a steady increase through 2005, a decrease between 2005 and 2008, and a dramatic inflection point and abrupt increase beginning in 2008. This is consistent with a resistance profile where changes in drug intervention temporarily delayed the upward trend in the appearance of the resistant phenotype; however, resistance quickly resumed its upward momentum in 2008 and this change was better predicted using the D-R model. Additional work is needed to determine if this pattern of "increase-control-increase" is indicative of Ceftazidime-resistant E. coli or can be generally ascribed to bacteria acquiring resistance to drugs in the absence of alternative intervention.
