RESUMO

In molecular-stream separation (MSS), a stream of a multicomponent mixture is separated into multiple streams of individual components. Quantitative evaluation of MSS data has been a bottleneck in MSS for decades as there was no conventional way to present the data in a reproducible and uniform fashion. The roots of the problem were in the multidimensional nature of MSS data; even in the ideal case of steady-state separation, the data is three-dimensional: intensity and two spatial coordinates. We recently found a way to reduce the dimensionality via presenting the MSS data in a polar coordinate system and convoluting the data via integration of intensity along the radius axis. The result of this convolution is an angulagram, a simple 2D plot presenting integrated intensity vs angle. Not only does an angulagram simplify the visual assessment, but it also allows the determination of three quantitative parameters characterizing the quality of MSS: stream width, stream linearity, and stream deflection. Reliably converting an MSS image into an angulagram and accurately determining the stream parameters requires an advanced and user-friendly software tool. In this technical note, we introduce such a tool: the open-source software Topino available at https://github.com/Schallaven/topino. Topino is a stand-alone program with a modern graphical user interface that allows processing an MSS image in a fast (<2 min) and straightforward way. The robustness and ruggedness of Topino were confirmed by comparing the results obtained by three users. Topino removes the analytical bottleneck in MSS and will be an indispensable tool for MSS users with varying levels of experience.

RESUMO

Camelina is an annual oilseed plant from the Brassicaceae family that is gaining momentum as a biofuel winter cover crop. However, a significant limitation in further enhancing its utility as a producer of oils that can be used as biofuels, jet fuels or bio-based products is the absence of a repository for all the gene expression and regulatory information that is being rapidly generated by the community. Here, we provide CamRegBase (https://camregbase.org/) as a one-stop resource to access Camelina information on gene expression and co-expression, transcription factors, lipid associated genes and genome-wide orthologs in the close-relative reference plant Arabidopsis. We envision this as a resource of curated information for users, as well as a repository of new gene regulation information.

RESUMO

Foot involvement is a major feature of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Most epidemiological studies of the RA foot report radiological changes and results of clinical examination. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of foot symptoms, frequency of foot assessment and access to foot care from the perspective of people with RA. A questionnaire was sent to 1,040 people with RA throughout the UK enquiring about foot symptoms, their anatomical distribution (via validated mannequins) availability of podiatry services and perceived usefulness of interventions for alleviating foot symptoms. Altogether 585 useable replies were received; 93.5% of respondents reported having experienced foot pain, and 35.4% reported current foot pain as the presenting symptom. Most (68.2%) reported moderate or severe foot pain daily. Pain was most prevalent in the forefoot and/or ankle. The main predictive factors for reporting current foot pain were longer disease duration (mean 13 vs 10.3 years, p = 0.009), higher BMI (25.6 vs 24.1 p = 0.001) and the prevalent foot symptoms foot stiffness and numbness (both p < 0.0001). Age, gender and current treatment were not significantly associated. Most (82%) had discussed foot symptoms with their rheumatologist, and only 64% had seen a podiatrist. Reported current adherence to prescribed orthoses was 55.8% and to prescribed shoes was 29.5%. Foot symptoms are ubiquitous in RA and frequently severe. Most patients had discussed their symptoms with their rheumatologist, and only 64% had specifically seen a podiatrist. Despite the remarkable progress in development of new treatment modalities for RA, foot pain remains a common and disabling symptom. Our findings support the need for wider access to specific foot care services and evidence-based, patient-centred interventions.

RESUMO

AIM: The aim of this pilot study using non-disabled subjects was to measure energy expenditure, hand position and ride comfort, in a standard dual handrim Sunrise Breezy Wheelchair compared to one modified with a novel ergonomic self propelled steering (ESP) mechanism kit. The clinical reasoning underpinning the engineering design of the ESP kit was to develop a more ergonomically efficient mechanism for wheelchair steering and propulsion for individuals who had sustained cerebral vascular accidents. METHODS: Ten non-disabled males participated in a repeated measures trial by driving two manual wheelchairs - a standard manual dual handrim wheelchair and one fitted with the steering conversion kit. Wheelchairs were randomly assigned, to participants who drove each wheelchair around a designated circuit. Oxygen consumption, carbon dioxide and heart rate were measured as indicators of ergonomic efficiency using a Cosmed analyser. Comfort for each wheelchair was measured using a validated questionnaire. RESULTS: Heart rate (bpm), oxygen consumption (O2 ml/min) and exhaled carbon dioxide (CO2 ml/min) were significantly lower in the modified wheelchair (P < 0.001, P < 0.006 and P < 0.014, respectively). All comfort ratings were reported to be significantly greater in the ESP (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The ESP conversion kit transforms a standard Sunrise Breezy Wheelchair into one that is ergonomically more efficient and comfortable for non-disabled subjects.

RESUMO

In common with other outcome measures, those for the at-risk rheumatoid foot need to be sensitive, specific and patient focussed, although currently these combined features are not available within one measure. There is also the issue of cross-validation with other commonly used measures to be considered. Both government policy and clinical need predicate development of suitable measures for the rheumatoid foot. In the first part of this paper, general issues relating to outcome measures and some government policy are considered and in the second, outcome measures relating to the at-risk rheumatoid foot are introduced alongside a discussion on the implications for practitioners.
