RESUMO

Objectives: Our goal was to describe Invasive Meningococcal Disease (IMD) in Southern Vietnam over the last 10 years. We characterized 109 Neisseria meningitidis strains in Southern Vietnam isolated between 1980s to 2021, that were collected from IMD (n = 44), sexually transmitted infections (n = 2), and healthy carriage (n = 63). Methods: IMD were confirmed by bacterial culture and/or real-time polymerase chain reaction at the national reference laboratory in Pasteur Institute of Ho Chi Minh City (PIHCM). Antimicrobial resistance was determined on 31 IMD and two sexually transmitted infection isolates with E-test for chloramphenicol (CHL), penicillin (PEN), ciprofloxacin (CIP), ceftriaxone (CRO), and rifampicin (RIF). Sequencing was performed for analyzing of multilocus-sequence-typing (MLST), porA, fetA, and antibiotic resistance genes, including gyrA, penA, and rpoB. Results: The incidence rate during this period was 0.02 per 100,000 persons/year. Serogroup B accounted for over 90% of cases (50/54). ST-1576 were mainly responsible for IMD, 27/42 MLST profiles, and associated with CHL resistance. Resistance was prevalent among IMD isolates. Thirteen were resistant to CHL (minimum inhibitory concentration [MIC] ≥16 mg/l), 12 were intermediate to PEN (MIC between 0.19 and 0.5 mg/l), and five were CIP-resistant (MIC between 0.19 and 0.5 mg/l). Particularly, one was non-susceptible to CRO (MIC at 0.125 mg/l), belonging to ST-5571 lineage. The resistance was due to carrying resistant alleles of penA and gyrA genes, and catP gene. Notably, seven isolates were resistant/non-susceptible to two or more antibiotics. Conclusion: Our results suggest the persistence of the circulating ST-1576 in Southern Vietnam, with a spread of antimicrobial resistance across the community.

RESUMO

Background: This retrospective hospital-based surveillance aimed to assess the epidemiology, causative pathogens trend, and serotypes distribution of pneumococcal meningitis among children aged under 5 years with bacterial meningitis in Southern Vietnam after the introduction of pentavalent vaccine in the Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI). Methods: From 2012 to 2021, cerebrospinal fluid samples were collected from children aged under 5 years with suspected bacterial meningitis at Children's Hospitals 1 and 2 in Ho Chi Minh City. Probable bacterial meningitis (PBM) cases were identified using biochemistry and cytology. Real-time polymerase chain reaction was used to confirm cases of confirmed bacterial meningitis (CBM) caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, or Neisseria meningitidis. Streptococcus pneumoniae serotyping was performed. Results: Of the 2560 PBM cases, 158 (6.2%) were laboratory-confirmed. The CBM proportion decreased during the 10-year study and was associated with age, seasonality, and permanent residence. Streptococcus pneumoniae was the most common pathogen causing bacterial meningitis (86.1%), followed by H influenzae (7.6%) and N meningitidis (6.3%). The case-fatality rate was 8.2% (95% confidence interval, 4.2%-12.2%). Pneumococcal serotypes 6A/B, 19F, 14, and 23F were the most prevalent, and the proportion of pneumococcal meningitis cases caused by the 10-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) serotypes decreased from 96.2% to 57.1% during the PCV eras. Conclusions: Streptococcus pneumoniae is the most frequent causative agent of bacterial meningitis in children aged under 5 years in Southern Vietnam over the last decade. Policymakers may need to consider introducing PCVs into the EPI to effectively prevent and control bacterial meningitis.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Southern Vietnam experienced a large measles outbreak of over 26,000 cases during 2018-2020. We aimed to understand and quantify the measles spread in space-time dependence and the transmissibility during the outbreak. METHODS: Measles surveillance reported cases between January 2018 and June 2020, vaccination coverage, and population data at provinicial level were used. To illustrate the spatio-temporal pattern of disease spread, we employed the endemic-epidemic multivariate time series model decomposing measles risk additively into autoregressive, spatio-temporal, and endemic components. Likelihood-based estimation procedures were performed to determine the time-varying reproductive number Re of measles. RESULTS: Our analysis showed that the incidence of measles was associated with vaccination coverage heterogeneity and spatial interaction between provincial units. The risk of infections was dominated by between-province transmission (36.1% to 78.8%), followed by local endogenous transmission (4.1% to 61.5%). In contrast, the endemic behavior had a relatively small contribution (2.4% to 33.4%) across provinces. In the exponential phase of the epidemic, Re was above the threshold with a maximum value of 2.34 (95% CI: 2.20-2.46). CONCLUSION: Local vaccination coverage and human mobility are important factors contributing to the measles dynamics in Southern Vietnam, and the high risk of inter-provincial transmission is of most concern. Strengthening the disease surveillance is recommended, and further research is essential to understand the relative contribution of population immunity and control measures in measles epidemics.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: The emergence of widespread amphetamine-type stimulants (ATSs) usage has created significant challenges for drug control and treatment policies in Southeast Asian countries. This study analyses the development of drug policies and examines current treatment program constraints in Vietnam to deal with ATS misuse. The aim was to gain insights that may be useful for national and international drug-related policy development and revision. METHODS: A desk review of national policy documents and 22 in-depth key informant interviews were conducted from 2019 to 2021. Thematic content analysis was employed to identify key themes and their connections. RESULTS: Analysis identified Vietnam's 30-year history of developing policies and formulating strategies to reduce supply, demand, and harm from illicit drugs. With the increasing number of people who use ATS (PWUA), Vietnam has recently promoted harsh policy and law enforcement to deter drug use and supply. This policy trend prevails in many Asian countries. The three main constraints in dealing with ATS misuse emerged from punitive and restrictive drug policies. First, the general public believed that Centre-based compulsory treatment (CCT) is the only appropriate treatment for all types of illicit drug addiction despite its low-quality service provision. The rigid drug policy has led to social persuasion with impractical expectations for CCT effectiveness. Second, the emphasis on punishment and detention has hampered new drug treatment service development in Vietnam. CCT has become monopolistic in the context of impoverished services. Third, people who use drugs tend to hide their needs and avoid formal treatment and support services, resulting in declined social coherence. CONCLUSION: While new drugs are constantly evolving, the current law enforcement approach potentially constrains expertise to adopt effective treatment services. This study suggests that the top-down policing mechanism presently hinders the development of an appropriate intervention strategy for ATS misuse and diminishes social support to service providers.

RESUMO

Tibia stress fractures are prevalent during high-intensity training, yet a mechanistic model linking longitudinal training intensity, bone health, and long-term injury risk has yet to be demonstrated. The objective of this study was to develop and validate a multiscale model of gross and tissue level loading on the tibia including bone remodeling on a timescale of week. Peak tensile tibial strain (3517 µstrain) during 4 m/s running was below injury thresholds, and the peak anteromedial tibial strain (1248 µstrain) was 0.17 standard deviations away from the mean of reported literature values. An initial study isolated the effects of cortical density and stiffness on tibial strain during a simulated eight week training period. Tibial strains and cortical microcracking correlated with initial cortical modulus, with all simulations presenting peak anteromedial tensile strains (1047-1600 µstrain) near day 11. Average cortical densities decreased by 7-8% of their nominal value by day 11, but the overall density change was <2% by the end of the simulated training period, in line with reported results. This study demonstrates the benefits of multiscale models for investigating stress fracture risk and indicates that peak tibial strain, and thus injury risk, may increase early in a high intensity training program. Future studies could optimize training volume and recovery time to reduce injury risk during the most vulnerable training periods.

RESUMO

Relatively little is known about the seroprevalence of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) IgG antibodies and COVID-19-related behaviors in the general population in Vietnam, where the first case of COVID-19 was detected on January 22, 2020. We surveyed a group of 885 blood donors at community blood donation sessions in Ho Chi Minh City from August 27 to November 7, 2020. Blood was collected to test for SARS-CoV-2 IgG antibodies using the plaque reduction neutralization test. We adjusted the seroprevalence by weight for ages 18 to 59 years old obtained from the 2019 population census. The weighted seroprevalence estimate for SARS-CoV-2 neutralizing IgG antibodies was 0.20% (95% CI, 0.05-0.81). Reports of usually or always using a mask in public places were observed at high levels of 28.6% and 67.5%, respectively. The percentages of usually or always washing hands with soap or disinfecting with hand sanitizer after touching items in public places were 48.0% and 37.6%, respectively. Although our findings suggest undocumented exposure to the virus, the seroprevalence of SARS-CoV-2 IgG antibodies among blood donors was low in this city.

RESUMO

The Nafion® electrolyte membrane, which provides a proton pathway, is an essential element in fuel cell systems. Thermal treatment without additional additives is widely used to modify the mechanical properties of the membrane, to construct reliable and durable electrolyte membranes in the fuel cell. We measured the microscopic mechanical properties of thermally annealed membranes using atomic force microscopy with the two-point method. Furthermore, the macroscopic property was investigated through tensile tests. The microscopic modulus exceeded the macroscopic modulus over all annealing temperature ranges. Additionally, the measured microscopic modulus increased rapidly near 150 °C and was saturated over that temperature, whereas the macroscopic modulus continuously increased until 250 °C. This mismatched micro/macroscopic reinforcement trend indicates that the internal reinforcement of the clusters is induced first until 150 °C. In contrast, the reinforcement among the clusters, which requires more thermal energy, probably progresses even at a temperature of 250 °C. The results showed that the annealing process is effective for the surface smoothing and leveling of the Nafion® membrane until 200 °C.

RESUMO

Human-induced land use in coastal areas is one of the main threats for seagrass meadows globally causing eutrophication and sedimentation. These environmental stressors induce sudden ecosystem shifts toward new alternative stable states defined by lower seagrass richness and abundance. Enhalus acoroides, a large-sized tropical seagrass species, appears to be more resistant toward environmental change compared to coexisting seagrass species. We hypothesize that reproductive strategy and the extent of seedling recruitment of E. acoroides are altered under disturbance and contribute to the persistence and resilience of E. acoroides meadows. In this research, we studied eight populations of E. acoroides in four lagoons along the South Central Coast of Vietnam using 11 polymorphic microsatellite loci. We classified land use in 6 classes based on Sentinel-2 L2A images and determined the effect of human-induced land use at different spatial scales on clonal richness and structure, fine-scale genetic structure and genetic diversity. No evidence of population size reductions due to disturbance was found, however, lagoons were strongly differentiated and may act as barriers to gene flow. The proportion and size of clones were significantly higher in populations of surrounding catchments with larger areas of agriculture, urbanization and aquaculture. We postulate that large resistant genets contribute to the resilience of E. acoroides meadows under high levels of disturbance. Although the importance of clonal growth increases with disturbance, sexual reproduction and the subsequent recruitment of seedlings remains an essential strategy for the persistence of populations of E. acoroides and should be prioritized in conservation measures to ensure broad-scale and long-term resilience toward future environmental change.

RESUMO

Introduction: Amphetamine-type stimulants (ATS) use is a global concern due to increased usage and the harm to physical, mental, and social well-being. The objective of this overview of systematic reviews is to summarise trial results of psychosocial interventions and describe their efficacy and safety. Methods: We searched seven bibliographic databases to November 2020 for systematic reviews examining ATS misuse treatment by psychosocial interventions. Given the apparent incompleteness of the included reviews, we undertook a supplemental meta-analysis of all eligible primary studies. Results: We included 11 systematic reviews of moderate to high quality and 39 primary studies which assessed the outcomes of psychosocial interventions on people who use ATS. The key findings include: (1) There were conflicting results about the effectiveness of psychosocial interventions among reviews, which may confuse decision-makers in selecting treatment. (2) In the supplemental meta-analysis, relative to usual care (only counselling or self-help materials), membership of a psychological intervention group was associated with an important reduction in drug usage [risk ratio (RR) 0.80, 95% CI: 0.75 to 0.85]. Patients in psychological interventions used injectables substantially less [odds ratio (OR) 0.35, 95% CI: 0.24 to 0.49]. The risk of unsafe sex in the psychosocial intervention group was lower than in the control group (RR 0.49, 95% CI: 0.34 to 0.71). The combination of therapies reduced 1.51 day using drugs in the preceding 30 days (95% CI: -2.36 to -0.67) compared to cognitive behavioural therapy intervention alone. (3) Compared to usual care, cognitive behavioural therapy was less likely to be retained at follow-up (RR 0.89, 95% CI: 0.82 to 0.97; high-quality evidence). However, the additional of contingency management strategy can make an important improvement upon retention (RR 1.42, 95%CI: 1.25 to 1.62). Authors' Conclusions: Integrated models are more effective than a single-treatment strategy. Comprehensive and sustained psychosocial interventions can help to reduce use of ATS and other drugs, risk behaviours and mental disorders, and significantly improve treatment adherence.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: In 2016-2017, 68 women in Southern Vietnam had RT-PCR confirmed Zika virus (ZIKV) infection during pregnancy. We report here the outcomes of the pregnancies and the virological analyses related to this outbreak. METHODS: We collected clinical and epidemiological information from the women who were enrolled in the study. Medical records related to the pregnancy in 2016-2017 were retrieved for those who were not able to be enrolled in the study. Children born to women with ZIKV infection during pregnancy were also enrolled. Serum samples were evaluated for presence of ZIKV antibodies. Phylogenetic analyses were performed on Zika virus genomes sequenced from the 2016-2017 serum samples. FINDINGS: Of the 68 pregnancies, 58 were livebirths and 10 were medically terminated. Four of the medical records from cases of fetal demise were able to be retrieved, of which one was consistent with congenital ZIKV infection. Of the 58 women with a livebirth, 21 participated in the follow-up investigation. All but two women had serologic evidence of ZIKV infection. Of the 21 children included in the study (mean age: 30.3 months), 3 had microcephaly at birth. No other clinical abnormalities were reported and no differences in neurodevelopment were observed compared to a control group. Phylogenetic analysis revealed a clade within the ZIKV Asian lineage and branch at the root of samples from the 2013-2014 French Polynesian outbreak. The prM S139N mutation was not observed. INTERPRETATION: We have been able to demonstrate a clade within the ZIKV Asian lineage implicated in adverse pregnancy outcomes in Southern Vietnam. RESUMO

The efforts of this study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of the nanotubular halloysites in weathered pegmatites (NaHWP) for removing heavy metals (i.e., Cd2+, Pb2+) from water. Furthermore, two novel intelligent models, such as teaching-learning-based optimization (TLBO)-artificial neural network (ANN), and TLBO-support vector regression (SVR), named as TLBO-ANN and TLBO-SVR models, respectively, were proposed to predict the Cd2+ and Pb2+ absorption efficiencies from water using the NaHWP absorbent. Databases used, including 53 experiments for Pb2+ absorption and 56 experiments for Cd2+ absorption from water, under the catalysis of different conditions, such as initial concentration of Pb2+ and Cd2+, solution pH, adsorbent weight, and contact time. Subsequently, the TLBO-ANN and TLBO-SVR models were developed and applied to predict the efficiencies of Cd2+ and Pb2+ absorption from water, aiming to evaluate the role as well as the effects of different conditions on the absorption efficiencies using the NaHWP absorbent. The standalone ANN and SVM models were also taken into consideration and compared with the proposed hybrid models (i.e., TLBO-ANN and TLBO-SVR). The results showed that the NaHWP detected in a Kaolin mine (Vietnam) with 70% nanotubular halloysites is a potential adsorbent for water treatment to eliminate heavy metals from water. The two novel hybrid models proposed, i.e., TLBO-ANN and TLBO-SVR, also yielded the dominant performances and accuracies in predicting the Cd2+ and Pb2+ absorption efficiencies from water, i.e., RMSE = 1.190 and 1.102, R2 = 0.951 and 0.957, VAF = 94.436 and 95.028 for the TLBO-ANN and TLBO-SVR models, respectively, in predicting the Pb2+ absorption efficiency from water; RMSE = 3.084 and 3.442, R2 = 0.971 and 0.965, VAF = 96.499 and 96.415 for the TLBO-ANN and TLBO-SVR models, respectively, in predicting the Cd2+ absorption efficiency from water. Furthermore, the validation results also demonstrated these findings in practice through 23 experiments with the accuracies of 98.3% and 98.37% for the TLBO-ANN and TLBO-SVR models, respectively, in predicting the Pb2+ absorption efficiency from water; the accuracies of 98.3% and 97.46% for the TLBO-ANN and TLBO-SVR models, respectively, in predicting the Cd2+ absorption efficiency from water. Besides, solution pH was evaluated as the most critical parameter that can be adjusted to enhance the performance of the absorption of the heavy metals in this study. By using the NaHWP absorbent and the novel proposed intelligent models developed, heavy metals can be eliminated entirely from water, providing pure water/clean freshwater without any risk of adverse health effects for the short term or long term.

RESUMO

Genome-wide analysis of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) strains is essential to better understand infectivity and virulence and to track coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases and outbreaks. We performed whole-genome sequencing of 27 SARS-CoV-2 strains isolated between January 2020 and April 2020. A total of 54 mutations in different genomic regions was found. The D614G mutation, first detected in March 2020, was identified in 18 strains and was more likely associated with a lower cycle threshold (<25) in real-time reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction diagnostic tests than the original D614 (prevalence ratio = 2.75; 95% confidence interval, 1.19-6.38). The integration of sequencing and epidemiological data suggests that SARS-CoV-2 transmission in both quarantine areas and in the community in Vietnam occur at the beginning of the epidemic although the country implemented strict quarantine quite early, with strict contact tracing, and testing. These findings provide insights into the nature of the epidemic, as well as shape strategies for COVID-19 prevention and control in Vietnam.

RESUMO

Introduction: Rabies is endemic in Vietnam and has been a statutory notifiable infectious disease since 1998. We, herein, assessed the performance of rabies surveillance in Southern Vietnam and identified areas for improvement. Materials and Methods: We analyzed data on human rabies cases reported during 1991-2018. We adapted guidelines from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to evaluate attributes of surveillance. Between June and November 2018, we interviewed a total of 145 staff from hospitals, preventive medicine centers, and animal health offices at provincial and district levels in five southern provinces. Results: Between 2009 and 2018, an average of nine cases of human rabies (range: 4-20 cases) was reported annually in Southern Vietnam, representing an incidence of 2.7 cases per 10 million population. The highest incidence was observed in 2018 (5.5 cases per 10 million population). Survey data suggested that only 24% (13/53) of participants agreed that the monthly report template was easy to complete and that 42% (23/55) indicated that the change from the paper-based to the electronic case notification systems was easy. Only 7% (2/29) of human rabies cases were reported timely, and 65% (13/20) successfully collected specimens. Approximately 39% (56/144) of staff were aware of turning surveillance data into prevention activities, and 21% (31/145) witnessed data used for strategic program decision making. Conclusions: Although rabies surveillance was quite simple, flexible, and accepted in southern Vietnam, simplifying the report forms, training staff, and improving the timeliness of reporting and data usage are highly recommended for a better implementation of rabies surveillance.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Vietnam has emerged as one of the world's leading success stories in responding to COVID-19. After a prolonged period of little to no transmission, there was an outbreak of unknown source in July, 2020, in the Da Nang region, but the outbreak was quickly suppressed. We aimed to use epidemiological, behavioural, demographic, and policy data from the COVID-19 outbreak in Da Nang to calibrate an agent-based model of COVID-19 transmission for Vietnam, and to estimate the risk of future outbreaks associated with reopening of international borders in the country. METHODS: For this modelling study, we used comprehensive data from June 15 to Oct 15, 2020, on testing, COVID-19 cases, and quarantine breaches within an agent-based model of SARS-CoV-2 transmission to model a COVID-19 outbreak in Da Nang in July, 2020. We applied this model to quantify the risk of future outbreaks in Vietnam in the 3 months after the reopening of international borders, under different behavioural scenarios, policy responses (ie, closure of workplaces and schools), and ongoing testing. FINDINGS: We estimated that the outbreak in Da Nang between July and August, 2020, resulted in substantial community transmission, and that higher levels of symptomatic testing could have mitigated this transmission. We estimated that the outbreak peaked on Aug 2, 2020, with an estimated 1060 active infections (95% projection interval 890-1280). If the population of Vietnam remains highly compliant with mask-wearing policies, our projections indicate that the epidemic would remain under control even if a small but steady flow of imported infections escaped quarantine into the community. However, if complacency increases and testing rates are relatively low (10% of symptomatic individuals are tested), the epidemic could rebound again, resulting in an estimated 2100 infections (95% projected interval 1050-3610) in 3 months. These outcomes could be mitigated if the behaviour of the general population responds dynamically to increases in locally acquired cases that exceed specific thresholds, but only if testing of symptomatic individuals is also increased. INTERPRETATION: The successful response to COVID-19 in Vietnam could be improved even further with higher levels of symptomatic testing. If the previous approaches are used in response to new COVID-19 outbreaks, epidemic control is possible even in the presence of low levels of imported cases. RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Rotavirus (RV) genotypes vary geographically, and this can affect vaccine effectiveness (VE). This study investigated the genotype distribution of RV and explored VE before introducing the RV vaccine to the national immunization programme in Vietnam. METHODS: This hospital-based surveillance study was conducted at Children's Hospital 1, Ho Chi Minh City in 2013-2018. Stool samples and relevant data, including vaccination history, were collected from children aged <5 years who were hospitalized with gastroenteritis. RV was detected using enzyme immunoassays and then genotyped. Children aged ≥6 months were included in the VE analysis. RESULTS: Overall, 5176 children were included in this study. RV was detected in 2421 children (46.8%). RV positivity decreased over the study period and was associated with age, seasonality, location and previous vaccination. Among 1105 RV-positive samples, G3P[8] was the most prevalent genotype (43.1%), followed by G8P[8] (19.7%), G1P[8] (12.9%) and G2P[4] (12.9%). Overall VE was 69.7% [95% confidence interval (CI) 53.3-80.6%] in fully vaccinated children and 58.6% (95% CI 44.1-69.4%) in children who had received at least one dose of RV vaccine. VE was highest for G3P[8] (95% CI 75.1-84.5%) and lowest for G2P[4] (95% CI 32.4-57.2%). CONCLUSIONS: RV remains a major cause of acute gastroenteritis requiring hospitalization in southern Vietnam. The RV vaccine is effective, but its effectiveness varies with RV genotype.

RESUMO

We describe the status of the COVID-19 epidemic in Vietnam, major response successes, factors that prompted implementation of certain public health actions, and the impact of these actions. In addition, information for three case studies is reported, with crucial learnings to inform future response. Findings from this study suggest that as early as 20 January 2020, Vietnam held a national risk assessment, established a national COVID-19 Response Plan and Technical Treatment and Care Guidelines, and prepared public health laboratories to accurately diagnose cases and hospitals to effectively treat patients. The first COVID-19 case was detected on 23 January. As of 30 September, there had been three waves of the COVID-19 epidemic totalling 1095 cases, and resulting in 35 deaths all among people with underlying health conditions. Evidence of potential transmission of SARS-CoV-2 from a commercial passenger flight inbound to Vietnam was reported. This study also highlights the importance of early technical preparedness, strong political commitment, multisectoral and multilevel efforts, increased resourcing and coordination towards an effective COVID-19 response. Controlling outbreaks in settings, such as crowded public places (bars and hospitals), within certain villages and over cities, required early detection, aggressive trace-test-quarantine efforts, a geographically extensive lockdown area and an adoption of several non-pharmaceutical interventions. Many low-income and middle-income countries have experienced their second or third wave of the COVID-19 epidemic, and they can learn from Vietnam's response across the three epidemic waves. Swift governmental action, strict border control measures, effective communication of health promotion measures, widespread community engagement, expanded testing capacity and effective social measures to slow the spread of SARS-CoV-2, are highly important in these locations.

RESUMO

Background: The protective or pathogenic role of T lymphocytes during the acute phase of dengue virus (DENV) infection has not been fully understood despite its importance in immunity and vaccine development. Objectives: This study aimed to clarify the kinetics of T lymphocyte subsets during the clinical course of acute dengue patients. Study design: In this hospital-based cohort study, 59 eligible Vietnamese dengue patients were recruited and admitted. They were investigated and monitored for T cell subsets and a panel of clinical and laboratory parameters every day until discharged and at post-discharge from the hospital. Results: We described for the first time the kinetics of T cell response during the clinical course of DENV infection. Severe cases showed significantly lower levels of effector CD8+ T cells compared to mild cases at day -1 (p = 0.017) and day 0 (p = 0.033) of defervescence. After defervescence, these cell counts in severe cases increased rapidly to equalize with the levels of mild cases. Our results also showed a decline in total CD4+ T, Th1, Th1/17 cells during febrile phase of dengue patients compared to normal controls or convalescent phase. On the other hand, Th2 cells increased during DENV infection until convalescent phase. Cytokines such as interferon-γ, IL-12p70, IL-5, IL-23, IL-17A showed tendency to decrease on day 0 and 1 compared with convalescence and only IL-5 showed significance indicating the production during acute phase was not systemic. Conclusion: With a rigorous study design, we uncovered the kinetics of T cells in natural DENV infection. Decreased number of effector CD8+ T cells in the early phase of infection and subsequent increment after defervescence day probably associated with the T cell migration in DENV infection.

RESUMO

In light of the chemical exploitation of CO2, new reusable materials for efficiently catalyzing the cycloaddition of CO2 and epoxides under moderate conditions are needed. Herein, a new series of isostructural metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) M2(EDOB) [EDOB4- = 4,4'-(ethyne-1,2-diyl)bis(2-oxidobenzoate), M = Mg, Ni, Co, Zn, Cu, Fe], known as M-MOF-184, analogous to a well-studied MOF-74 structure, were synthesized and fully characterized. The M-MOF-184 (M = Mg, Co, Ni, Zn) frameworks exhibit accessible mesopore channels (24 Å) and high porosity. Among them, Mg-MOF-184 demonstrated the most upper surface area (>4000 m2 g-1) in any reported MOF-74-type frameworks. Furthermore, Co-MOF-184 revealed the highest CO2 uptake (73 cm3 g-1, at 298 K), and Zn-MOF-184 showed the highest catalytic activity upon the cycloaddition of CO2 (96% conversion, 86% selectivity, and 82% yield) under mild conditions (1 atm CO2, 80 °C, 6 h, and solvent-free). Notably, the catalytic performance of Zn-MOF-184 outperformed that of the original M-MOF-74 (M = Mg, Co, Zn) materials and various Zn-based MOFs. To evaluate the acidity and basicity of a series of M-MOF-184 (M = Mg, Co, Ni, Zn) frameworks, the interaction of these MOFs with acetonitrile vapor was investigated by vapor adsorption and ATR-FTIR spectroscopy measurements. As such, Zn-MOF-184 showed the strongest Lewis acidity derived by Zn cations, which was correlated to the highest catalytic activity upon the cycloaddition of CO2. Interestingly, the 2-oxidobenzoate anions from Co-MOF-184 showed the strongest basicity among the series, which was associated with the highest saturated acetonitrile uptake (544 cm3 g-1 at 298 K). Our findings suggest that the integration of Lewis acidic and basic sites, high surface area, and large accessible pores into the framework can facilitate the CO2 fixation reaction.
