RESUMO

Potatoes are consumed worldwide because of their high accessibility, low cost, taste, and diversity of cooking methods. The high carbohydrate content of potatoes masks the presence of -vitamins, polyphenols, minerals, amino acids, lectins and protein inhibitors in the minds of consumers. The consumption of potatoes faces challenges among health-conscious people. This review paper attempted to provide up-to-date information on new metabolites reported in potatoes that play role in disease prevention and overall human well-being. We tried to compile information on antidiabetic, antihypertensive, anticancer, antiobesity, antihyperlipidemic, and anti-inflammatory potential of potato along with role in improving gut health and satiety. In-vitro studies, human cell culture, and experimental animal and human clinical studies showed potatoes to exhibit a variety of health-enhancing properties. This article will not only popularize potato as a healthy food, but will also improve its use as a staple for the foreseeable future.

Most cultivated potatoes are tetraploid, and the tuber is the main economic part that is consumed due to its calorific and nutritional values. Recent trends in climate change led to the frequent occurrence of heat and drought stress in major potato-growing regions worldwide. The optimum temperature for tuber production is 15-20 °C. High-temperature and water-deficient conditions during the growing season result in several morphological, physiological, biochemical, and molecular alterations. The morphological changes under stress conditions may affect the process of stolon formation, tuberization, and bulking, ultimately affecting the tuber yield. This condition also affects the physiological responses, including an imbalance in the allocation of photoassimilates, respiration, water use efficiency, transpiration, carbon partitioning, and the source-sink relationship. The biochemical responses under stress conditions involve maintaining ionic homeostasis, synthesizing heat shock proteins, achieving osmolyte balance, and generating reactive oxygen species, ultimately affecting various biochemical pathways. Different networks that include both gene regulation and transcription factors are involved at the molecular level due to the combination of hot and water-deficient conditions. This article attempts to present an integrative content of physio-biochemical and molecular responses under the combined effects of heat and drought, prominent factors in climate change. Taking into account all of these aspects and responses, there is an immediate need for comprehensive screening of germplasm and the application of appropriate approaches and tactics to produce potato cultivars that perform well under drought and in heat-affected areas.

The potato originated in southern Peru and north-western Bolivia (South America). However, native accessions have also been cultivated in India for many years. Late blight, caused by the fungus Phytophthora infestans, is the most devastating potato disease, while potato cyst nematode (Globodera spp.) (PCN) is another economically significant quarantine-requiring pest in India. In this study, we have generated a new Indian native collection of 94 potato accessions collected from different parts India. These accessions were screened against late blight and potato cyst nematode resistance by using gene-based molecular markers and phenotypic screening methods. Marker assisted selection using R1 gene-specific marker CosA210 revealed a late blight resistance gene in 11 accessions. PCN resistance bands were found in 3 accessions with marker TG689141, 5 accessions with marker 57R452, and 1 accession having Gro1-4-1602 marker for G. rostochiensis (Ro1,4), while 64 accessions amplified marker HC276 indicating G. pallida (Pa2,3) resistance gene (GpaVvrn QTL). On the other hand, phenotypic screening against late blight resistance under natural epiphytic conditions (hot-spot) revealed three accessions with high resistance, while others were resistant (1 accession), moderately resistant (5 accessions), susceptible (29 accessions), and highly susceptible (56 accessions). For G. rostochiensis (golden cyst nematode) and G. pallida (white cyst nematode) resistance, accessions were grouped into highly resistant (3, 3), resistant (0, 2), moderately resistant (6, 29), susceptible (32, 30), and highly susceptible (53, 30), respectively, for the two PCN species. Collectively, we identified promising accessions with high resistance to late blight (JG-1, Kanpuria Safed, and Rangpuria), and also highly resistant to both Globodera species (Garlentic, Jeevan Jyoti, and JG-1). Our findings suggested that these accessions would be useful for late blight and PCN resistance breeding, as well as future molecular studies in potatoes.

Tubers of forty four indigenous potato varieties were assessed for storage behaviour at room temperature, tuber dry matter content and cooking quality during 2010, 2011 and 2012. The maximum, minimum temperatures and relative humidity during storage period ranged between 26 to 40 °C, 17-28 °C and 18 to 82 %, respectively. The lowest total weight loss was recorded in variety Kufri Pushkar (7.7 %) followed by Kufri Lalima (7.9 %), Kufri Surya (8.3 %), Kufri Red (9.2 %), Kufri Dewa, Kufri Sheetman (9.3 %), Kufri Chandramukhi, Kufri Jyoti (9.5 %), Kufri Sindhuri (9.6 %), Kufri Kuber (9.7 %), Kufri Chipsona-1 (9.8 %), Kufri Kundan (9.9 %) and Kufri Chamatkar (10.0 %). Highest tuber dry matter content (%) was observed in Variety Kufri Kundan (24.2) followed by Kufri Himsona (23.7), Kufri Frysona (23.6), Kufri Kuber (22.7), Kufri Chipsona-2 (22.3). Kufri Khasigaro (22.0), Kufri Sheetman (21.9), Kufri Chipsona-3 (21.7) and lowest in Variety Kufri Khyati and Kufri Pukhraj (16.1 %). Of the total varieties, 14 were adjudged as floury, 15 mealy, 14 waxy and one (Kufri Ashoka) as soggy. The total weight loss had highly significant and positive correlation with sprout weight/Kg tubers (r = 0.76**), physiological weight loss (r = 0.97**). Based on the results potato varieties namely, Kufri Chamatkar, Kufri Chipsona-1, Kufri Chandramukhi, Kufri Dewa, Kufri Jyoti, Kufri Kuber, Kufri Kundan, Kufri Lalima, Kufri Lauvkar, Kufri Pushkar, Kufri Red, Kufri Safed, Kufri Sheetman, Kufri Sindhuri possessed excellent keeping quality with medium to long tuber dormancy, low storage losses, medium to high tuber dry matter and good flavour. The information generated in this study can be utilized in the breeding programme. This can also help the farmer to choose and cultivate the potato varieties as per demand of the consumers.
