RESUMO

Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is a malignancy of the oral cavity with poor prognosis. Dysregulation in glycolytic pathways involving glucose transporters (GLUT) has been implicated in poor prognosis. Furthermore, GLUT expression in cancer cells is regulated by several miRNAs. However, there is a lack of data about miRNA involved in the regulation of GLUT in OSCC. The objective is to evaluate the role of miRNA in the regulation of GLUT in OSCC. Data sources include PubMed (MEDLINE), Scopus, and Web of Science. Studies evaluating the miRNA involved or associated with the regulation of GLUT in OSCC were included in the systematic review. Data pertaining to GLUT and associated miRNA expression were extracted from studies. Qualitative assessment was carried out for GLUT and miRNA. The Newcastle-Ottawa Scale was used for quality assessment. Ten study articles were included after analyzing 4675 papers. These studies evaluated the GLUT and miRNA expression between healthy and OSCC samples. There are variable expression patterns of GLUT in OSCC. Furthermore, it was dependent on miRNA. The GLUT1 and GLUT-3 were detected more frequently in OSCC, while no study reveals the expression of GLUT2, GLUT4, GLUT7, GLUT8, GLUT13, SGLT1, and SGLT2 with miRNA regulation. However, there was insufficient evidence on specific miRNA linked to GLUT1 or GLUT3 expression. There is evidence of the role of miRNA in the regulation of GLUT especially GLUT1 and GLUT3 in OSCC; however, a specific relation to miRNA was understudied. In the future, studies exploring a clearer understanding of the association between miRNA and the GLUT metabolic pathway in relation to OSCC are warranted. Furthermore, association of miRNA and GLUT with progression of disease, disease resistance, and prognosis is assessed for better treatment outcomes.

Background Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) incidence and its mortality have increased recently. The oral part of the tongue is one of the commonest sites for OSCC. Apart from Tumour-Node-Metastasis (TNM) staging, lymph node ratio (LNR) has been implicated as one of the useful predictors for the better clinical outcome of the disease. The aim of the present study was to assess the LNR as a prognostic factor for patients having oral tongue squamous cell carcinoma (OTSCC). Materials and methods It is a retrospective study of 122 patients with OTSCC who were managed primarily by surgery with curative intent from January 2014 to December 2016. The mean lymph node ratio was measured and compared with various parameters of clinical outcome such as five-year overall survival (OS), five-year disease-free survival (DFS), locoregional failure (LRF) within three years, and distant metastasis (DM) within five years using Kruskal-Wallis Test followed by Mann-Whitney Post Hoc Test. The association of LNR with other tumor characteristic features like perineural invasion, extra-nodal extension (ENE), and histopathological grading was also elicited. Results The study population's mean age was 50.5 ± 11.77 years. Among them, 85 were males and 37 were females. On comparing the mean LNR value with patient status after primary treatment, the patients with minimal LNR value had statistically significant five-year OS and five-year DFS (p< 0.001). High mean LNR values were associated with other adverse features like perineural invasion and ENE, which were statistically significant (p<0.001). Receiver operator characteristics (ROC) curve analysis for the LNR parameter for determining the cut-off (0.02) between OS and DFS had 86% sensitivity and 40% specificity. Conclusion The LNR could be an important prognosis factor for OTSCC that helps in determining better clinical outcomes.

RESUMO

The probability of occurrence of impacted permanent maxillary canine tooth is 2% and, in most cases, is an incidental finding. The management options for them vary from no treatment, surgical exposure, and orthodontic traction into dental arch, surgical removal, and autotransplantation. Although orthodontic traction into the dental arch is the ideal treatment of choice, it cannot be achieved in permanent maxillary canines impacted in unfavorable or aberrant positions. In this article, we report a rare case of a unilateral impacted permanent maxillary canine tooth in an inverted position, which was an incidental finding during the patient's routine dental examination and discuss the management options for impacted permanent maxillary canine teeth.

The glandular odontogenic cyst (GOC) is a rare odontogenic cyst that can develop in the maxillofacial region with aggressive behavior. It tends to develop into enormous proportions with high recurrence rates. The mandibular anterior area is the common site of occurrence of GOC, and it appears as an asymptomatic slow-growing swelling. GOC mimics other odontogenic cysts and tumors both clinically and radiographically, thus posing difficulty in diagnosis. Due to the aggressive potential of GOC, precise diagnosis and prompt treatment are crucial. Both conservative and aggressive surgical therapies have been advocated for GOC with a preference for aggressive therapy due to its high potential for recurrence. In this report, we present a case of GOC of the mandible in an adult female patient, which was successfully treated by segmental resection and primary reconstruction with stainless steel recon plate with uneventful healing during the one-year postoperative follow-up period.
