BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Transient hypofunction of the NMDA receptor represents a convergence point for the onset and further development of psychiatric disorders, including schizophrenia. Although the cumulative evidence indicates dysregulation of the hippocampal formation in schizophrenia, the integrity of the synaptic transmission and plasticity conveyed by the somatosensorial inputs to the dentate gyrus, the perforant pathway synapses, have barely been explored in this pathological condition. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH: We identified a series of synaptic alterations of the lateral and medial perforant paths in animals postnatally treated with the NMDA antagonist MK-801. This dysregulation suggests decreased cognitive performance, for which the dentate gyrus is critical. KEY RESULTS: We identified alterations in the synaptic properties of the lateral and medial perforant paths to the dentate gyrus synapses in slices from MK-801-treated animals. Altered glutamate release and decreased synaptic strength precede an impairment in the induction and expression of long-term potentiation (LTP) and CB1 receptor-mediated long-term depression (LTD). Remarkably, by inhibiting the degradation of 2-arachidonoylglycerol (2-AG), an endogenous ligand of the CB1 receptor, we restored the LTD in animals treated with MK-801. Additionally, we showed for the first time, that spatial discrimination, a cognitive task that requires dentate gyrus integrity, is impaired in animals exposed to transient hypofunction of NMDA receptors. CONCLUSION AND IMPLICATIONS: Dysregulation of glutamatergic transmission and synaptic plasticity from the entorhinal cortex to the dentate gyrus has been demonstrated, which may explain the cellular dysregulations underlying the altered cognitive processing in the dentate gyrus associated with schizophrenia.

Natural killer/T-cell lymphoma (NK/T-cellL) is an aggressive non-Hodgkin's lymphoma with limited treatment options for patients who experience disease progression or recurrence after second-line treatment. The use of new therapies, such as pembrolizumab, which involves immune checkpoint blockade mechanisms, is proposed. This systematic review followed the MOSE guidelines and searched PUBMED/MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Scopus databases. Fourteen articles were found, reporting on the use of pembrolizumab anti PD-1 in NK/T-cellL patients. The objective response rate was 84.50%, with disease-free survival ranging from two to 48 months. The complete response rate was 61.6%, and the quality of the reported studies was evaluated to be of high and moderate confidence bias levels in case reports and high bias in clinical trials. Pembrolizumab and others anti PD-1 are treatment options for refractory/recurrent NK/T-cellL, regardless of PD-L1 expression, with good short- and long-term results and low adverse events.

Drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE) is associated with high extracellular levels of glutamate. Studies support the idea that cannabidiol (CBD) decreases glutamate over-release. This study focused on investigating whether CBD reduces the evoked glutamate release in cortical synaptic terminals obtained from patients with DRE as well as in a preclinical model of epilepsy. Synaptic terminals (synaptosomes) were obtained from the epileptic neocortex of patients with drug-resistant temporal lobe epilepsy (DR-TLE, n = 10) or drug-resistant extratemporal lobe epilepsy (DR-ETLE, n = 10) submitted to epilepsy surgery. Synaptosomes highly purified by Percoll-sucrose density gradient were characterized by confocal microscopy and Western blot. Synaptosomes were used to estimate the high KCl (33 mM)-evoked glutamate release in the presence of CBD at different concentrations. Our results revealed responsive tissue obtained from seven patients with DR-TLE and seven patients with DR-ETLE. Responsive tissue showed lower glutamate release (p < 0.05) when incubated with CBD at low concentrations (less than 100 µM) but not at higher concentrations. Tissue that was non-responsive to CBD (DR-TLE, n = 3 and DR-ELTE, n = 3) showed high glutamate release despite CBD exposure at different concentrations. Simultaneously, a block of the human epileptic neocortex was used to determine its viability through whole-cell and extracellular electrophysiological recordings. The electrophysiological evaluations supported that the responsive and non-responsive human epileptic neocortices used in the present study exhibited proper neuronal viability and stability to acquire electrophysiological responses. We also investigated whether the subchronic administration of CBD could reduce glutamate over-release in a preclinical model of temporal lobe epilepsy. Administration of CBD (200 mg/kg, p.o. every 24 h for 7 days) to rats with lithium-pilocarpine-evoked spontaneous recurrent seizures reduced glutamate over-release in the hippocampus. The present study revealed that acute exposure to low concentrations of CBD can reduce the glutamate over-release in synaptic terminals obtained from some patients with DRE. This effect is also evident when applied subchronically in rats with spontaneous recurrent seizures. An important finding was the identification of a group of patients that were non-responsive to CBD effects. Future studies are essential to identify biomarkers of responsiveness to CBD to control DRE.

Background: Surgical fatigue syndrome (SFS) is a frequent, but underestimated, entity that occurs during laparoscopic surgeries. It could impair surgical outcomes, patient safety, and surgeon health. Furthermore, current surgical education lacks effective interventions to avoid it. Discomfort represents the most common manifestation and includes musculoskeletal fatigue, numbness, or frank pain. The most common affected sites are the back neck, dominant hand shoulder, and high or low back. We propose an integral intervention (surgeon posture, instruments/devices design & use and discomfort improvement) that prevents or mitigates SFS. Methods: An experimental study was conducted on 57 general surgery residents and general surgeons. Participants in the experimental and control group executed standardized laparoscopic knots in a simulator and knowledge, body discomfort, and posture/ergonomic risk was evaluated before and after intervention application. Results: A statistically significant decrease in discomfort intensity was found in the experimental group. Also, discomfort presentation by the anatomic site diminishes and surgical performance improves. Conclusions: Intervention prevents or mitigates discomfort associated with muscle-skeletal component of SFS. ACGME competency: Practice Based-Learning and Improvement.

BACKGROUND: Minimally invasive spine surgery (MISS) represents a major development in spinal tumor surgery. However, considering that many intradural lesions compromise multiple spinal segments, MISS has certain limitations. Thus, some intraspinal lesions still require traditional approaches. Because laminectomy has been shown to predispose patients to kyphosis, laminoplasty and hemilaminectomy are the most widely used approaches to preserve the posterior tension band (PTB). However, these techniques are not devoid of complications. To overcome these issues, the authors modified a previously described technique to preserve the PTB while removing various types of intradural lesions. This procedure was originally designed to treat lumbar stenosis and was modified to avoid muscle ischemia during long procedures. OBSERVATIONS: Between 2014 and 2021, the authors found 17 cases of spinal lesions with a minimum of 2 years of follow-up after surgical treatment using their approach. No significant postoperative changes in the paraspinal Goutallier grade or spinal angles were observed. The cross-sectional area of the measured paraspinal muscles decreased 6% postoperatively. By performing certain technical modifications in this PTB-sparing (PBS) laminectomy, the authors avoided ipsilateral muscle ischemia. LESSONS: In this initial series, PBS laminectomy proved to be a safe, versatile, inexpensive, and reliable technique to remove intraspinal lesions.

The emergence of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) variants of concern (VOCs) presents global heterogeneity, and their relative effect on pediatric severity is still limited. In this study, we associate VOCs with pediatric clinical severity outcomes in Mexico. Bioinformatics methods were used to characterize VOCs and single amino acid (aa) mutations in 75,348 SARS-CoV-2 genetic sequences from February 2020 to October 2022. High-predominance VOCs groups were calculated and subsequently associated with 372,989 COVID-19 clinical pediatric outcomes. We identified 21 high-frequency mutations related to Omicron lineages with an increased prevalence in pediatric sequences compared to adults. Alpha and the other lineages had a significant increase in case fatality rate (CFR), intensive critical unit (ICU) admission, and automated mechanical ventilation (AMV). Furthermore, a logistic model with age-adjusted variables estimated an increased risk of hospitalization, ICU/AMV, and death in Gamma and Alpha, in contrast to the other lineages. We found that, regardless of the VOCs lineage, infant patients presented the worst severity prognoses. Our findings improve the understanding of the impact of VOCs on pediatric patients across time, regions, and clinical outcomes. Enhanced understanding of the pediatric severity for VOCs would enable the development and improvement of public health strategies worldwide.

The blockade of 5-HT6 receptors represents an experimental approach that might ameliorate the memory deficits associated with brain disorders, including Alzheimer's disease and schizophrenia. However, the synaptic mechanism by which 5-HT6 receptors control the GABAergic and glutamatergic synaptic transmission is barely understood. In this study, we demonstrate that pharmacological manipulation of 5-HT6 receptors with the specific agonist EMD 386088 (7.4 nM) or the antagonist SB-399885 (300 nM) modulates the field inhibitory postsynaptic potentials of the dorsal hippocampus and controls the strength of the population spike of pyramidal cells. Likewise, pharmacological modulation of 5-HT6 controls the magnitude of paired-pulse inhibition, a phenomenon mediated by GABAergic interneurons acting via GABAA receptors of pyramidal cells. The effects of pharmacological manipulation of the 5-HT6 receptor were limited to GABAergic transmission and did not affect the strength of field excitatory postsynaptic potentials mediated by the Schaffer collaterals axons. Lastly, in a modified version of the Pavlovian autoshaping task that requires the activation of the hippocampal formation, we demonstrated that the anti-amnesic effect induced by the blockade of the 5-HT6 receptor is prevented when the GAT1 transporter is blocked, suggesting that modulation of GABAergic transmission is required for the anti-amnesic properties of 5-HT6 receptor antagonists.

Obesity has been linked to cognitive impairment through systemic low-grade inflammation. High fat and sugar diets (HFSDs) also induce systemic inflammation, either by induced Toll-like receptor 4 response, or by causing dysbiosis. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of symbiotics supplementation on spatial and working memory, butyrate concentration, neurogenesis, and electrophysiological recovery of HFSD-fed rats. In a first experiment, Sprague-Dawley male rats were given HFSD for 10 weeks, after which they were randomized into 2 groups (n = 10 per group): water (control), or Enterococcus faecium + inulin (symbiotic) administration, for 5 weeks. In the fifth week, spatial and working memory was analyzed through the Morris Water Maze (MWM) and Eight-Arm Radial Maze (RAM) tests, respectively, with 1 week apart between tests. At the end of the study, butyrate levels from feces and neurogenesis at hippocampus were determined. In a second experiment with similar characteristics, the hippocampus was extracted to perform electrophysiological studies. Symbiotic-supplemented rats showed a significantly better memory, butyrate concentrations, and neurogenesis. This group also presented an increased firing frequency in hippocampal neurons [and a larger N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA)/α-amino-3-hydroxyl-5-methyl-4-isoxazole-propionate (AMPA) current ratio] suggesting an increase in NMDA receptors, which in turn is associated with an enhancement in long-term potentiation and synaptic plasticity. Therefore, our results suggest that symbiotics could restore obesity-related memory impairment and promote synaptic plasticity.

A method was developed to determine glyphosate and their metabolites in water. The widespread use of this herbicide in agricultural activities worldwide, despite the reported adverse effects on both the environment and health, is a cause for concern and makes it necessary to monitor its presence through a method that guarantees the determination at trace levels. A direct extraction of the analytes with phosphate buffer was performed with subsequent derivatization with 9-fluorenylmethyl chloroformate. The quantification was determined by Ultra Performance Liquid Chromatography-tandem mass spectrometer. The method was validated through the following parameters: selectivity, detection and quantification limits, linearity, accuracy, precision and uncertainty. The average recoveries ranged between 94.08 and 103.31%. Additionally, detection limits from 0.396 to 0.433 µg/L, and the quantification limit was 5.0 µg/L for all the analytes evaluated. In terms of linearity and precision, the results obtained were in the ranges considered adequate (R2 ≥ 0.99 and CV ≤ 20%), the estimated expanded uncertainty was 12.95, 11.15 and 13.83% for glyphosate, aminomethylphosphonic acid and glufosinate, respectively. This method was successfully applied for the determination of the target analytes in irrigation water samples, detecting concentrations of aminomethylphosphonic acid over limit detection for some sampling sites.

Experimental manipulations that interfere with the functional expression of N-methyl-D-aspartate receptors (NMDARs) during prenatal neurodevelopment or critical periods of postnatal development are models that mimic behavioral and neurophysiological abnormalities of schizophrenia. Blockade of NMDARs with MK-801 during early postnatal development alters glutamate release and impairs the induction of NMDAR-dependent long-term plasticity at the CA1 area of the hippocampus. However, it remains unknown if other forms of hippocampal plasticity, such as α-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid receptor (AMPAR)-mediated short- and long-term potentiation, are compromised in response to neonatal treatment with MK-801. Consistent with this tenet, short- and long-term potentiation between dentate gyrus axons, the mossy fibers (MF), onto CA3 pyramidal cells (CA3 PCs) are mediated by AMPARs. By combining whole-cell patch clamp and extracellular recordings, we have demonstrated that transient blockade of NMDARs during early postnatal development induces a series of pre- and postsynaptic modifications at the MF-CA3 synapse. We found reduced glutamate release from the mossy boutons, increased paired-pulse ratio, and reduced AMPAR-mediated MF LTP levels. At the postsynaptic level, we found an altered NMDA/AMPA ratio and dysregulation of several potassium conductances that increased the excitability of CA3 PCs. In addition, MK-801-treated animals exhibited impaired spatial memory retrieval in the Barnes maze task. Our data demonstrate that transient hypofunction of NMDARs impacts NMDAR-independent forms of synaptic plasticity of the hippocampus.

BACKGROUND: Bodily illusions can be used to investigate the experience of being in a body by manipulating the underlying processes of multisensory integration. Research suggests that people with eating disorders (EDs) may have impairments in visual, interoceptive, proprioceptive, and tactile bodily perception. Furthermore, people with EDs also show abnormalities in integrating multisensory visuo-tactile and visual-auditory signals related to the body, which may contribute to the development of body image disturbances. Visuo-auditory integration abnormalities have been observed also in people with subthreshold ED symptomatology. However, it remains unclear whether these impairments are specific to bodily signals or if they extend to any auditory signals. METHODS: We will recruit 50 participants (aged 18-24; females assigned at birth) with ED symptomatology (subthreshold group) and 50 control participants. The Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire will be administered to screen for ED symptomatology and divide the sample into two groups accordingly (control and subthreshold group using a clinical cut-off score of 2.8). The strength of both illusions will be measured implicitly with estimations of body part position and size, and explicitly with self-report questionnaires. As a secondary aim, regression analysis will be run to test the predictive role of susceptibility for both illusions on interoceptive body awareness (measured by the Multidimensional Assessment of Interoceptive Awareness Scale) and sensory-processing sensitivity (measured by the Highly Sensitive Person Scale). DISCUSSION: Our study may contribute to our understanding of the mechanisms underlying body image disturbances. The results may pave the way for novel clinical interventions targeting early symptoms prior to the development of the disorder in young females.


This study aims to investigate whether individuals with subthreshold eating disorder (ED) symptoms show differences in the integration of proprioceptive and auditory cues in relation to body representation, as compared to healthy controls. This will be examined by focusing on two different body parts (finger and waist) with different levels of emotional significance for individuals with EDs. Participants will be screened for ED symptoms and divided into groups accordingly. The strength of the illusions will be measured using estimations of body part position and size, as well as self-report questionnaires. Regression analysis will be used to assess the predictive role of susceptibility to the body illusions on interoceptive body awareness and sensory-processing sensitivity. The results of this study may have implications for understanding the underlying mechanisms of body image disturbances in EDs, and inform the development of clinical interventions for individuals with subthreshold EDs.

Developmental venous anomalies (DVAs) are composed of mature venous vessels that lack malformed or neoplastic elements. Although the hemorrhage risk is considered negligible, some patients may have neurological symptoms attributable to acute infarction or intracranial hemorrhage secondary to thrombosis, in the absence of a coexisting cavernous malformation. We report the case of a 42-year-old patient who presented with acute left-hand paresis secondary to a subcortical hemorrhage. This bleeding originated from a DVA in the corticospinal tract area and was surgically drained through an awake craniotomy. To accomplish this, we used a trans-precentral sulcus approach. After the complete removal of the coagulum, small venous channels appeared, which were coagulated. No associated cavernoma was found. Although the main DVA trunk was left patent, no signs of ischemia or venous infarction were observed after coagulating the small venous channels found inside the hematoma cavity. Two weeks after the procedure, the patient's hand function improved, and he was able to resume desktop work. DVA-associated hemorrhage within the cortico-spinal tract could be safely removed with modern awake mapping techniques. This technique allowed the patient to rapidly improve his hand function.

Introducción: El objetivo del presente estudio fue determinar las características clínicas y pronóstico de los pacientes con Leucemia/Linfoma de Células T del Adulto (ATL) en el Instituto Nacional de Enfermedades Neoplásicas (INEN) de Perú. Metodología: Se realizó un estudio transversal, que incluyó por Se revisaron 188 historias clínicas y estudio patológico de pacientes con infección por HTLV-1 diagnosticados en el INEN durante 10 años, de quienes 150 tuvieron ATL. Resultados: 62% de los pacientes tuvieron el subtipo ATL linfoma, 37% subtipo agudo y 1% crónico. La mediana de edad fue 53 años (20-89); 51% fueron mujeres. Dentro de las características clínicas: ECOG ≥ 2 (56%); estadio clínico III-IV (80%), síntomas B (58%); incremento de la deshidrogenasa láctica, LDH, (74%); leucocitosis (50%); hipercalcemia (46%) y anemia (36%). 122 pacientes (81,3%) recibieron tratamiento, 79% con quimioterapia (QT) y 4,6% radioterapia complementaria (RT); CHOP fue el esquema de QT más frecuente (89%). De los pacientes con QT tuvieron 18% RC, 32% RP, 7% EE y 13% PE. Conclusión: En este reporte en pacientes con ATL, la forma linfoma es el subtipo más frecuente, existe alta prevalencia de inmunofenotipo atípico y pobre respuesta al CHOP.


Introduction: The objective of this study was to determine the clinical characteristics and progno-sis of patients with adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATL) at the National Institute of Neoplastic Diseases (INEN) of Peru. Methodology: A cross-sectional study was carried out, which included 188 clinical histories and a pathological study of patients diagnosed with HTLV-1 infection diagnosed at the INEN for ten years, of whom 150 had ATL. Results: Sixty-two percent of the patients had the ATL lymphoma subtype, 37% had the acute sub-type, and 1% had the chronic subtype. The median age was 53 (20-89); 51% were women. Within the clinical characteristics: ECOG ≥ 2 (56%); clinical stage III-IV (80%), symptoms B (58%); increased lactic dehydrogenase, LDH, (74%); leukocytosis (50%); hypercalcemia (46%) and anemia (36%). A total of 122 patients (81.3%) received treatment, 79% with chemotherapy (CT) and 4.6% with complementary radiotherapy (RT); CHOP was the most frequent QT regimen (89%). Of the patients with QT, 18% had CR, 32% PR, 7% EE, and 13% PE. Conclusion: In this report, in patients with ATL, the lymphoma form was the most frequent subtype, and there was a high prevalence of atypical immunophenotype and poor response to CHOP.

Characterizing water quality in coastal waters through spatial observations is challenging, due to spatial and temporal variations in water composition. Nitrate, an important compound for water quality assessment, has received little attention in estimates made from satellite measurements, even though it can be estimated using models generated from multispectral images. Since nitrate is a non-optically active parameter that can be correlated with optically active parameters, it was related to bands of the visible and infrared spectrum, captured in Landsat-8 images, and used to generate empirical models to estimate the spatio-temporal variation of nitrate concentration in the Playa Colorada Bay, in the state of Sinaloa Northwest Mexico. Four sampling campaigns were performed, two in spring and two in fall. Nitrate nitrogen (NO3-N) concentration ranged between 0.69 and 1.80 mg/L, values higher than those recommended in the Mexican ecological criteria of water quality for the protection of marine aquatic life in coastal areas. Generated models showed a significant relationship (P < 0.05) between NO3-N and band reflectance in the infrared (band 5) and short-wave infrared (band 6 and band 7) spectra of Landsat-8 imagery. The B6 band appeared in all models selected to estimate NO3-N in the bay. These results evidence the potential of Landsat-8 images for the estimation of nitrate in the coastal waters of Sinaloa, México.

Melanocyte-derived tumours are common in humans and animals and their spontaneous occurrence in dogs and the clinicopathological progression in malignant presentations is comparable with humans. Melanomas are a heterogeneous group of malignant neoplasms and several subtypes have been classified, including angiomatoid melanoma, of which only five cases have been reported in humans but none in animals. We now document cases of primary angiomatoid melanoma in the skin and oral cavity of two dogs. Neoplastic cells resembling endothelial cells that lined large blood vessels in the tumours were immunonegative for CD34 but intensely positive for SOX10.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Dysregulation of dopaminergic transmission combined with transient hypofunction of N-methyl-d-aspartate receptors (NMDARs) is a key mechanism that may underlie cognitive symptoms of schizophrenia. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH: Therefore, we aimed to identify electrophysiologic alterations in animals neonatally treated with the NMDA receptor antagonist, MK-801, or with saline solution. KEY RESULTS: Patch-clamp whole-cell recordings from MK-801-treated animals revealed altered passive and active electrophysiologic properties compared with CA1 pyramidal cells from saline-treated animals, including up-regulation of the K+ inward-rectifier conductance and fast-inactivating and slow/non-inactivating K+ currents. Up-regulation of these membrane ionic currents reduced the overall excitability and altered the firing properties of CA1 pyramidal cells. We also explored the capability of cells treated with MK-801 to express intrinsic excitability potentiation, a non-synaptic form of hippocampal plasticity associated with cognition and memory formation. CA1 pyramidal cells from animals treated with MK-801 were unable to convey intrinsic excitability potentiation and had blunted synaptic potentiation. Furthermore, MK-801-treated animals also exhibited reduced cognitive performance in the Barnes maze task. Notably, activation of D1/D5 receptors with SKF-38,393 partially restored electrophysiologic alterations caused by neonatal treatment with MK-801. CONCLUSION AND IMPLICATIONS: Our results offer a molecular and mechanistic explanation based on dysregulation of glutamatergic transmission, in addition to dopaminergic transmission, that may contribute to the understanding of the cognitive deterioration associated with schizophrenia.

Las fístulas o dehiscencia de heridas asociadas a implantes mamarios representan una complicación relativamente poco frecuente en la práctica diaria. Se asocia a factores locales y representa un riesgo en cuanto a la posibilidad de extrusión y remoción del implante. El tratamiento de esta complicación se realiza esterilizando y provocando una capsulitis química con TCA 90% en la zona del lecho del implante y la confección del Colgajo en Doble Banderín para el cierre cutáneo. De esta forma, ha permitido resolver dicha complicación, al mismo tiempo que refuerza la herida ofreciendo sostén al área de decúbito generada. Desde el punto de vista anatómico se muestran disecciones cadavéricas para evidenciar detalles de la técnica de cierre.


Fistula or dehiscence of wounds associated with breast implants represent a relatively rare complication in daily practice. It is associated with local factors and represents a risk in terms of the possibility of extrusion and removal of the implant. The treatment of this complication is carried out by sterilizing and causing a chemical capsulitis with TCA 90% in the area of the implant and making a Double Flag Flap for cutaneous closure. In this way, it has made to resolve this complication, at the same time that it reinforces the wound by offering support to the decubitus area generated. From the anatomical point of view, cadaveric dissections show details of the closure technique.

The Selva Zoque region is characterized by a great variety of ecosystems for which there is little information about reptile species diversity and their conservation status. This study is the first assessment of the species richness, composition, and conservation status of reptiles of this region. Additionally, this information is compared with that of seven other tropical regions in northern Mesoamerica. In total, 141 native reptile species belonging to 81 genera and 29 families are recorded for the Selva Zoque region. Sixty species (42% of the total) recorded in Selva Zoque are in high-risk categories according to the Mexican Ministry of the Environment, the highest number for the Mexican regions of Mesoamerica. According to the IUCN, six species are in high-risk categories, seven species are in Data Deficient, and 23 (16%) have not been evaluated yet. According to the Environmental Vulnerability Scores approach, 28 species (20%) are in the high vulnerability category. The Selva Zoque species composition is most similar to Los Tuxtlas and Lacandona regions, and most dissimilar to Sian Ka´an Biosphere Reserve. The reptilian fauna of Selva Zoque has a distinctive composition, with the highest number (11 species) of endemic reptiles in the northern Mesoamerican, and species from two biogeographic provinces: the Gulf of Mexico and the Mexican Pacific Coast. These results indicate that the Selva Zoque is the most diverse region in native reptile species in northern Mesoamerica, highlighting it as extremely important for the conservation of the reptile fauna at local (southern Mexico) and regional levels (northern Mesoamerica).

BACKGROUND: Complete (Simpson Grade I: total removal) resections for anterior spinal meningiomas are especially challenging. This is largely attributed to difficulty obtaining a water-tight dural repair where the tumor has infiltrated the dura requiring duroplasty, thus often resulting in just a Simpson Grade II resection (i.e. coagulation of the dural implantation site). Here, we present a 56-year-old female who underwent resection of a ventral lumbar meningioma utilizing the Saito technique, that effectively separated the dura into two layers, removing just the inner layer but leaving the outer layer intact for direct dural repair. METHODS: A 56-year-old female underwent a L1-L2 laminectomy. The anterior intradural resection of tumor was achieved with the Saito technique; this required cutting circumferentially around the tumor insertion site, and removing only the inner layer. RESULTS: Postoperatively, the patient did well without tumor recurrence over 8 years. The postoperative biopsy confirmed a World Health Organization Grade I meningothelial meningioma. CONCLUSION: Saito's technique proved to be a safe and effective method for achieving gross total resection of an anterior lumbar meningioma.

In northern Sinaloa state, Mexico, little is known on organophosphate pesticide transport and fate in agricultural drainage systems. Spatial and temporal variation of chlorpyrifos and dimethoate was assessed in two agricultural drainage ditches (Buenaventura and Burrión) and risk for aquatic life was estimated. Analysis was made by high performance liquid chromatography and risk estimates were determined following international reference frameworks. In water, the highest chlorpyrifos concentration in the Buenaventura ditch was 5.49 µg L-1, and 3.43 µg L-1 in the Burrión ditch. Dimethoate was quantified only once in both ditches (0.44 µg L-1 and 0.49 µg L-1). In sediment, chlorpyrifos was quantified only in the Burrión ditch (242 µg kg-1). Chlorpyrifos concentrations surpassed water and sediment quality criteria, representing a hazard for environmental and human health, as both ditches discharge into the Gulf of California and are used for capture of commercial species such as the grey mullet (Mugil cephalus) and cauque prawn (Macrobrachium americanum).
