RESUMO

The A/Z dependence of projectile fragmentation at relativistic energies has been studied with the ALADIN forward spectrometer at SIS. A stable beam of (124)Sn and radioactive beams of (124)La and (107)Sn at 600 MeV per nucleon have been used in order to explore a wide range of isotopic compositions. Chemical freeze-out temperatures are found to be nearly invariant with respect to the A/Z of the produced spectator sources, consistent with predictions for expanded systems. Small Coulomb effects (DeltaT approximately 0.6 MeV) appear for residue production near the onset of multifragmentation.

RESUMO

The spallation of 56Fe in collisions with hydrogen at 1A GeV has been studied in inverse kinematics with the large-aperture setup SPALADIN at GSI. Coincidences of residues with low-center-of-mass kinetic energy light particles and fragments have been measured allowing the decomposition of the total reaction cross section into the different possible deexcitation channels. Detailed information on the evolution of these deexcitation channels with excitation energy has also been obtained. The comparison of the data with predictions of several deexcitation models coupled to the INCL4 intranuclear cascade model shows that only GEMINI can reasonably account for the bulk of collected results, indicating that in a light system with no compression and little angular momentum, multifragmentation might not be necessary to explain the data.

RESUMO

Isotopic effects in the fragmentation of excited target residues following collisions of 12C on (112,124)Sn at incident energies of 300 and 600 MeV per nucleon were studied with the INDRA 4pi detector. The measured yield ratios for light particles and fragments with atomic number Z < or = 5 obey the exponential law of isotopic scaling. The deduced scaling parameters decrease strongly with increasing centrality to values smaller than 50% of those obtained for the peripheral event groups. Symmetry-term coefficients, deduced from these data within the statistical description of isotopic scaling, are near gamma = 25 MeV for peripheral and gamma < 15 MeV for central collisions.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The prognosis of intraocular foreign bodies consisting of lead remains controversial. While experiments have shown that infected lead becomes sterile when fired from rifles, both the total absence as well as presence of severe inflammation have been observed following perforating injuries with lead. Furthermore, alterations of the ERG have been described in experimental settings. This case report is presented in order to clarify the long term prognosis of intralenticular lead particles. PATIENT AND METHOD: The 69-year-old patient suffered from a bilateral perforating injury caused by a bullet during World War II (1942). The right lens was extracted due to a secondary cataract several weeks following the injury. The left lens remained clear despite a paracentrally located metallic foreign body. The patient underwent extracapsular cataract extraction in 1992 because of an opacity of the posterior capsule which was well separated from the foreign body. Preoperatively the ERG was normal. An energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis in a scanning electron microscope was performed in order to determine the chemical composition of the foreign body, and X-ray diffraction with a Gandolphi camera was used for its structural characterisation. The foreign body consists of lead. However, its surface is probably altered to lead oxide, hydroxide or carbonate, which hindered further reaction of the lead. Calcium phosphate was deposited on the walls of the foreign body. CONCLUSION: Our report shows that lead in the lens remains inert for several decades and does not cause alterations in the ERG. Therefore, intralenticular lead outside of the optical axis may be left in situ unless a secondary cataract develops.

RESUMO

After the rhesus monkey was demonstrated to be a suitable model for man in both metabolic and endocrinological studies, effects of hexachlorobenzene (HCB) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) on the pattern of sexual hormones in cycling female rhesus monkeys were investigated. After confirmed ovulation, four adult female rhesus monkeys were treated during the following cycle with 4 mg/kg/day of HCB, and four other monkeys were treated with the same dose of Clophen A 30. Ovulation was blocked in three PCB-treated and one HCB-treated monkeys. Whereas the levels of luteinizing hormone and follicle-stimulating hormone did not seem to be changed directly by the treatment, low estrogen levels were found during the anovulatory cycles. Studies with PCB- and HCB-treated superovulated rats indicated interaction of the chemicals with ovarian steroidogenesis. Altered hepatic steroid metabolism may also cause low estrogen levels in treated animals.

RESUMO

48 patients with biopsy-proven coeliac disease are examined by means of intestinal intubation (enteroclysis). The radiological findings are discussed and these signs seems to be more specific for coeliac disease than the results of a conventional barium study of the small intestine.

RESUMO

Uniaxial compression at 800 degrees C and 5 kilobars confining pressure of a specimen cored from a single crystal of orthoenstatite [(Mg,Fe)SiO(3)] produced fine lamellae 100 to 1000 angstroms thick of untwinned clinoenstatite. The two phases are joined along (100) planes and have b and c axes in common. The orientation of the clinoenstatite a axis contradicts several previously suggested transformation mechanisms and reduces the set of possible mechanisms by a factor of 2.

RESUMO

Indications of shock metamorphism produced by pressures up to the megabar region have been observed in the fine material and the breccias, but very rarely in the coarser fragments of crystalline rocks. These indications are deformation structures in plagioclase and pyroxene, diaplectic plagioclase glasses, and glasses formed by shock-induced melting of lunar rocks. Two sources of shock waves have been distinguished: primary impact of meteorites and secondary impact of crater ejecta. There are two major chemical types of shock-induced melts. The differences in chemistry may be related to impact sites in mare and highland areas.
