RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the relationships among caregiver burden, family resilience, and caregiver capacity in the care of stroke survivors. We hypothesised that family resilience would mediate the relationship between caregiver burden and caregiver capacity. DESIGN: A cross-sectional study design was used. SETTING: The study was conducted in a tertiary care setting in Ningbo City, Zhejiang Province, China. PARTICIPANTS: The study involved 413 stroke survivors and their primary caregivers. OUTCOME MEASURES: The primary caregivers completed the Shortened Chinese Version of the Family Resilience Assessment Scale, Zarit Caregiver Burden Interview and Family Caregiver Task Inventor and provided their sociodemographic information. Stroke survivors were assessed for activities of daily living, and their sociodemographic information was provided. Data were analysed, controlling for sociodemographic variables and focusing on the mediating effect of family resilience. RESULTS: Caregiver burden was influenced by the activities of daily living of stroke survivors, caregiver age and caregiver health status (p<0.05). Higher caregiver burden was associated with lower family resilience (p<0.01). Lower caregiver capacity corresponded to heavier caregiver burden (p<0.01). Family resilience mediated the relationship between caregiver burden and caregiver capacity (b=0.1568; 95% CI: 0.1063 to 0.2385). CONCLUSIONS: Enhancing family resilience can reduce caregiver burden and improve caregiver capacity in stroke care. These findings underscore the importance of developing interventions focused on nursing skills and family resilience.

Endogenous phospholipase A2 (PLA2) plays an important role in phospholipids degradation during cured meat products manufacturing. The present study was undertaken to reveal more information about the endogenous PLA2 in muscles and its role in degradation of intramuscular phospholipids. With the catalytic domain of pork calcium-independent PLA2 (iPLA2cd), impacts of physic-chemical factors on the activity were investigated and substrate specificity of the enzyme were tested respectively. The optimum temperature and pH of pork iPLA2cd were 40 °C and 7.5, respectively. The iPLA2cd could be stimulated by adequate contents of NaCl and ATP, and inhibited by CaCl2 and NaNO2. For native phospholipids, the iPLA2cd was of a little higher affinity towards phosphatidylcholine (PC) than phosphatidylethanolamine (PE), phosphoserine (PS) and phosphatidylinositol (PI). The iPLA2cd could preferentially hydrolyze peroxidized PC over the native PC. The results would help better understand the degradation of phospholipids and the role played by endogenous enzymes during meat products manufacturing.

PURPOSE: Postpartum depression (PPD) brings adverse and serious consequences to both new parents and newborns. Neuroticism affects PPD, which remains controversial for confounding factors and reverse causality in cross-sectional research. Therefore, mendelian randomization (MR) study has been adopted to investigate their causal relationship. METHODS: This study utilized large-scale genome-wide association study genetic pooled data from three major databases: the United Kingdom Biobank, the European Bioinformatics Institute, and the FinnGen databases. The causal analysis methods used inverse variance weighting (IVW). The weighted median, MR-Egger method, MR-PRESSO test, and the leave-one-out sensitivity test have been used to examine the results' robustness, heterogeneity, and horizontal pleiotropy. The fixed effect model yielded the results of meta-analysis. RESULTS: In the IVW model, a meta-analysis of the MR study showed that neuroticism increased the risk of PPD (OR, 1.17; 95% CI, 1.11-1.25, p < 0.01). Reverse analysis showed that PPD could not genetically predict neuroticism. There was no significant heterogeneity or horizontal pleiotropy bias in this result. CONCLUSION: Our study suggests neuroticism is the risk factor for PPD from a gene perspective and PPD is not the risk factor for neuroticism. This finding may provide new insights into prevention and intervention strategies for PPD according to early detection of neuroticism.

Cancer cells largely rely on aerobic glycolysis or the Warburg effect to generate essential biomolecules and energy for their rapid growth. The key modulators in glycolysis including glucose transporters and enzymes, e.g. hexokinase 2, enolase 1, pyruvate kinase M2, lactate dehydrogenase A, play indispensable roles in glucose uptake, glucose consumption, ATP generation, lactate production, etc. Transcriptional regulation and post-translational modifications (PTMs) of these critical modulators are important for signal transduction and metabolic reprogramming in the glycolytic pathway, which can provide energy advantages to cancer cell growth. In this review we recapitulate the recent advances in research on glycolytic modulators of cancer cells and analyze the strategies targeting these vital modulators including small-molecule inhibitors and microRNAs (miRNAs) for targeted cancer therapy. We focus on the regulation of the glycolytic pathway at the transcription level (e.g., hypoxia-inducible factor 1, c-MYC, p53, sine oculis homeobox homolog 1, N6-methyladenosine modification) and PTMs (including phosphorylation, methylation, acetylation, ubiquitination, etc.) of the key regulators in these processes. This review will provide a comprehensive understanding of the regulation of the key modulators in the glycolytic pathway and might shed light on the targeted cancer therapy at different molecular levels.

AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) is a cellular energy sensor regulating metabolic homeostasis. In this study, we investigated the role of AMPK in response to human herpesvirus 6A (HHV-6A) infection. We show that HHV-6A infection significantly downregulates the active phosphorylated state of AMPK in infected T cells. Pharmacological activation of AMPK highly attenuated HHV-6A propagation. Mechanistically, we found that the activation of AMPK by AICAR blocked HHV-6-induced glycolysis by inhibiting glucose metabolism and lactate secretion, as well as decreasing expressions of key glucose transporters and glycolytic enzymes. In addition, mTOR signaling has been inactivated in HHV-6A infected T cells by AICAR treatment. We also showed that HHV-6A infection of human umbilical cord blood mononuclear cells (CBMCs) reduced AMPK activity whereas the activation of AMPK by metformin drastically reduced HHV-6A DNA replication and virions production. Taken together, this study demonstrates that AMPK is a promising antiviral therapeutic target against HHV-6A infection.

PURPOSE: Periodontitis-associated bacteria, such as Porphyromonas gingivalis and Fusobacterium nucleatum, are closely linked to the risk of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Emerging studies have indicated that another common periodontal pathogen, Prevotella intermedia (P. intermedia), is enriched in OSCC and could affect the occurrence and progression of OSCC. Our aim is to determine the effects of P. intermedia on the progression of OSCC and the role of antibiotics in reversing these effects. METHODS: In this study, a murine xenograft model of OSCC was established, and the mice were injected intratumorally with PBS (control group), P. intermedia (P.i group), or P. intermedia combined with an antibiotic cocktail administration (P.i + ABX group), respectively. The effects of P. intermedia and ABX administration on xenograft tumor growth, invasion, angiogenesis, and metastasis were investigated by tumor volume measurement and histopathological examination. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used to investigate the changes in serum cytokine levels. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) was adopted to analyze the alterations in the levels of inflammatory cytokines and infiltrated immune cells in OSCC tissues of xenograft tumors. Transcriptome sequencing and analysis were conducted to determine differential expression genes among various groups. RESULTS: Compared with the control treatment, P. intermedia treatment significantly promoted tumor growth, invasion, angiogenesis, and metastasis, markedly affected the levels of inflammatory cytokines, and markedly altered M2 macrophages and regulatory T cells (Tregs) infiltration in the tumor microenvironment. However, ABX administration clearly abolished these effects of P. intermedia. Transcriptome and immunohistochemical analyses revealed that P. intermedia infection increased the expression of interferon-stimulated gene 15 (ISG15). Correlation analysis indicated that the expression level of ISG15 was positively correlated with the Ki67 expression level, microvessel density, serum concentrations and tissue expression levels of inflammatory cytokines, and quantities of infiltrated M2 macrophages and Tregs. However, it is negatively correlated with the quantities of infiltrated CD4+ and CD8+ T cells. CONCLUSION: In conclusion, intratumoral P. intermedia infection aggravated OSCC progression, which may be achieved through upregulation of ISG15. This study sheds new light on the possible pathogenic mechanism of intratumoral P. intermedia in OSCC progression, which could be a prospective target for OSCC prevention and treatment.

Miscanthus has good tolerance to multi-metal(loid)s and has received increasing attention in remediated studies of metal(loid)s-contaminated soil. In this study, we conducted phytoextraction techniques to investigate the synergic effects of remediation of multi-metal(loid)s-contaminated soil by Miscanthus floridulus (Lab.) and two plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB), TS8 and MR2, affiliated to Enterobacteriaceae. The results exhibited a decrease of arsenic (15.27-21.50%), cadmium (8.64-15.52%), plumbum (5.92-12.76%), and zinc (12.84-24.20%) except for copper contents in the soil in bacterial inoculation groups, indicating that MR2 and TS8 could enhance the remediation of metal(loid)s. Moreover, increased fresh/dry weight and height indicated that inoculated bacteria could promote Miscanthus growth. Although the activities of antioxidant enzymes and the content of chlorophyll in the overground tissues showed no significant increase or even decrease, the activities of antioxidant enzymes in the underground tissues and soil were elevated by 48.95-354.17%, available P by 19.07-23.02%, and available K by 15.34-17.79% (p < 0.05). Bacterial inoculants could also decrease the soil pH. High-throughput sequencing analysis showed that the bacterial inoculant affected the rhizosphere bacterial community and reduced community diversity, but the relative abundance of some PGPB was found to increase. Phylogenetic molecular ecological networks indicated that bacterial inoculants reduced interactions between rhizosphere bacteria and thereby led to a simpler network structure but increased the proportion of positive-correlation links and enhanced the metabiosis and symbiosis of those bacteria. Spearman's test showed that OTUs affiliated with Enterobacteriaceae and soil nutrients were critical for metal(loid) remediation and Miscanthus growth. The results of this study provide a basis for the synergic remediation of multi-metal(loid)s-contaminated soils by Miscanthus and PGPB and provide a reference for the subsequent regulation of Miscanthus remediation efficiency by the other PGPB or critical bacteria.

Background: As a scaffold protein, calcium/calmodulin-dependent serine protein kinase (CASK) has been extensively studied in a variety of tissues throughout the body. The Cask gene is ubiquitous in several tissues, such as the neurons, islets, heart, kidneys and sperm, and is mostly localised in the cytoplasm adjacent to the basement membrane. CASK binds to a variety of proteins through its domains to exerting its biological activity. Scope of review: Here, we discuss the role of CASK in multiple tissues throughout the body. The role of different CASK domains in regulating neuronal development, neurotransmitter release and synaptic vesicle secretion was emphasised; the regulatory mechanism of CASK on the function of pancreatic islet ß cells was analysed; the role of CASK in cardiac physiology, kidney and sperm development was discussed; and the role of CASK in different tumours was compared. Finally, we clarify the importance of the Cask gene in the body, and how deletion or mutation of the Cask gene can have adverse consequences. Major conclusions: CASK is a conserved gene with similar roles in various tissues. The function of the Cask gene in the nervous system is mainly involved in the development of the nervous system and the release of neurotransmitters. In the endocrine system, an involvement of CASK has been reported in the process of insulin vesicle transport. CASK is also involved in cardiomyocyte ion channel regulation, kidney and sperm development, and tumour proliferation. CASK is an indispensable gene for the whole body, and CASK mutations can cause foetal malformations or death at birth. In this review, we summarise the biological functions and pathological mechanisms of CASK in various systems, thereby providing a basis for further in-depth studies of CASK functions.

BACKGROUND: Oral microbial dysbiosis contributes to the development of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Our previous study showed that Prevotella intermedia (P. intermedia) were enriched in the oral mucosal surface, plaque, and saliva of patients with OSCC. Intratumoral microbiome could reshape the immune system and influence the development of various tumors. However, the invasion status of human OSCC tissues by P. intermedia and the pathway through which intratumoral P. intermedia potentiates tumor progression remain unexplored. METHODS: P. intermedia in human OSCC or normal tissues was detected by FISH. A mouse OSCC cell line SCC7 was adopted to investigate the effects of heat-killed P. intermedia treatment on cell proliferation, invasion, and cytokine release by using CCK-8 assay, transwell invasion assay and ELISA. Moreover, we established a mouse transplanted tumor model by using SCC7 cells, injected heat-killed P. intermedia into tumor tissues, and investigated the effects of heat-killed P. intermedia on tumor growth, invasion, cytokine levels, immune cell infiltrations, and expression levels by using gross observation, H&E staining, ELISA, immunohistochemistry, mRNA sequencing, and transcriptomic analysis. RESULTS: Our results indicated that P. intermedia were abundant in OSCC and surrounding muscle tissues. Heat-killed P. intermedia promoted SCC7 cell proliferation, invasion and proinflammatory cytokine secretions, accelerated transplanted tumor growth in mice, exacerbate muscle and perineural invasion of OSCC, elevated the serum levels of IL-17A, IL-6, TNF-α, IFN-γ, and PD-L1, induced Treg cells M2 type macrophages in mouse transplanted tumors. The data of transcriptomic analysis revealed that heat-killed P. intermedia increased the expression levels of inflammatory cytokines and chemokines while reduced the expression levels of some tumor suppressor genes in mouse transplanted tumors. Additionally, IL-17 signaling pathway was upregulated whereas GABAergic system was downregulated by heat-killed P. intermedia treatment. CONCLUSIONS: Taken together, our results suggest that P. intermedia could inhibit the expression of tumor suppressors, alter the tumor microenvironment, and promote the progression of OSCC.

Out-of-hospital cardiac arrest is a major public health problem worldwide due to its high burden and poor outcomes. Despite progress in treatment, patient outcomes remain unsatisfactory, particularly in low-resource settings. The establishment of a registry is the first step towards gaining a comprehensive understanding of prevailing local conditions and identifying potential opportunities for improving patient survival. Here, we provide a narrative review of the BASeline Investigation of Out-of-hospital Cardiac Arrest (BASIC-OHCA), the first national OHCA registry in China, to introduce its development history, current state, challenges and future directions. We aim to enhance cross-cultural understanding by providing insights from China, while also serving as a reference for the implementation of large-scale registries in low-resource settings.

Gastric cancer is a highly metastatic malignant tumor with high morbidity and mortality globally. Recent studies reported that sulfonamide derivatives such as indisulam exhibited inhibitory effects on the viability and migration of cancer cells. However, multiple clinical trials revealed that indisulam did not significantly prevent cancer progression due to metastasis and drug resistance. Therefore, it is necessary to discover new potent derivatives to explore alternative therapeutic strategies. Here, we synthesize multiple indisulam derivatives and examine their inhibitory effects on the viability and migration of gastric cancer cells. Among them, compounds SR-3-65 and WXM-1-170 exhibit better inhibitory effects on the migration of gastric cancer cells than indisulam. Mechanistically, we discover that they could attenuate the PI3K/AKT/GSK-3ß/ß-catenin signaling pathway and lead to the suppression of epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT)-related transcription factors. The influence of SR-3-65 on the migration of gastric cancer cells is blocked by the PI3K inhibitor LY294002 while SR-3-65 and WXM-1-170 reverse the effect of PI3K activator 740 Y-P on the migration of gastric cancer cells. Molecular docking and molecular dynamics simulation further confirm that PI3K is the target of SR-3-65. Our study unveils a novel mechanism by which SR-3-65 and WXM-1-170 inhibit the migration of gastric cancer cells. Together with the previous discovery, we reveal that subtle structural change in indisulam results in a striking switch on the molecular targets and their associated signaling pathways for the inhibition of the migration of gastric cancer cells. These findings might provide informative insights for the development of targeted therapy for gastric cancer.

Aerobic methane-oxidizing bacteria (MOB) play a crucial role in mitigating the greenhouse gas methane emission, particularly prevalent in flooded wetlands. The implementation of ridge with no-tillage practices within a rice-rape rotation system proves effective in overcoming the restrictive redox conditions associated with waterlogging. This approach enhances capillary water availability from furrows, especially during periods of low rainfall, thereby supporting plant growth on the ridges. However, the microbe-mediated accumulation of soil organic carbon and nitrogen remains insufficiently understood under this agricultural practice, particularly concerning methane oxidation, which holds ecological and agricultural significance in the rice fields. In this study, the ridge and ditch soils from a 28-year-old ridge with no-tillage rice field experiment were utilized for incubation with 13C-CH4 and 15NN2 to estimate the methane-oxidizing and N2-fixing potentials. Our findings reveal a significantly higher net production of fresh soil organic carbon in the ridge compared to the ditch soil during methane oxidation, with values of 626 and 543 µg 13C g-1 dry weight soil, respectively. Additionally, the fixed 15N exhibited a twofold increase in the ridge soil (14.1 µg 15N g-1 dry weight soil) compared to the ditch soil. Interestingly, the result of DNA-based stable isotope probing indicated no significant differences in active MOB and N2 fixers between ridge and ditch soils. Both Methylocystis-like type II and Methylosarcina/Methylomonas-like type I MOB catalyzed methane into organic biomass carbon pools. Soil N2-fixing activity was associated with the 15N-labeling of methane oxidizers and non-MOB, such as methanol oxidizers (Hyphomicrobium) and conventional N2 fixers (Burkholderia). Methane oxidation also fostered microbial interactions, as evidenced by co-occurrence patterns. These results underscore the dual role of microbial methane oxidation - not only as a recognized sink for the potent greenhouse gas methane but also as a source of soil organic carbon and bioavailable nitrogen. This emphasizes the pivotal role of microbial methane metabolism in contributing to soil carbon and nitrogen accumulation in ridge with no-tillage systems.

The present study, for the first time, reports the fabrication of core-shell poly(ionic liquids)@ZIF-8 nanocomposites through a facile in-situ polymerization strategy. These composites exhibited exceptional structural characteristics including high specific surface areas and the integration of high-density Lewis acid/base and nucleophilic active sites. The structure-activity relationship, reusability, and versatility of the poly(ionic liquids)@ZIF-8 composites were investigated for the cycloaddition reaction between CO2 and epoxide. By optimizing the composites structures and their catalytic performance, PIL-Br@ZIF-8(2:1) was identified as an exciting catalyst that exhibits high activity and selectivity in the synthesis of various cyclic carbonates under mild or even atmospheric pressure or simulated flue gas conditions. Moreover, the catalyst demonstrated excellent structural stability while maintaining its catalytic activity throughout multiple usage cycles. By combining DFT calculations, we investigated the transition states and intermediate geometries of the cycloaddition reaction in different coordination microenvironments, thereby proposing a synergistic catalytic mechanism involving multiple active sites.

INTRODUCTION: Primary central nervous system lymphoma (PCNSL) is a rare subtype of aggressive extranodal non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Currently, there is no standard of care for the treatment of refractory or relapsed PCNSL (r/r PCNSL). We conducted a prospective single-arm phase II study to evaluate zanubrutinib plus cytarabine for r/r PCNSL. METHODS: Using Simon's two-stage design, we analyzed 34 patients who received high-dose cytarabine (3.0 g/m2 once daily) for 2 days and zanubrutinib (160 mg twice daily) for 21 days each cycle for up to 6 cycles. The study was registered at www.chictr.org.cn as #ChiCTR2000039229. RESULTS: The median follow-up was 19 months. The overall response rate was 64.7% (95% confidence interval (CI), 47.9% to 78.5%) with a complete remission or unconfirmed complete remission rate of 47.1% (16/34) and a partial remission rate of 17.6% (6/34). The median progression-free survival was 4.5 months (95% CI, 1.5 to 9.4) and the median OS was 18 months (95%CI, 9.5 to not estimable). The median duration of the response was 9 months (95%CI, 3.2 to not estimable). The most common treatment-emergent adverse events were thrombocytopenia (55.9%). No treatment-related death occurred. CONCLUSION: Zanubrutinib and cytarabine showed efficacy in r/r PCNSL with an acceptable safety profile.

Cadmium (Cd)-contaminated soil poses a severe threat to crop production and human health, while also resulting in a waste of land resources. In this study, two types of organic fertilizer (ZCK: Low-content available iron; Z2: High-content available iron) were applied to Cd-contaminated soil for rice cultivation, and the effects of the fertilizer on rice growth and Cd passivation were investigated in conjunction with soil microbial analysis. Results showed that Z2 could alter the composition, structure, and diversity of microbial communities, as well as enhance the complexity and stability of the microbial network. Both 2% and 5% Z2 significantly increased the fresh weight and dry weight of rice plants while suppressing Cd absorption. The 2% Z2 exhibited the best Cd passivation effect. Gene predictions suggested that Z2 may promote plant growth by regulating microbial production of organic acids that dissolve phosphorus and potassium. Furthermore, it is suggested that Z2 may facilitate the absorption and immobilization of soil cadmium through the regulation of microbial cadmium efflux and uptake systems, as well as via the secretion of extracellular polysaccharides. In summary, Z2 can promote rice growth, suppress Cd absorption by rice, and passivate soil Cd by regulating soil microbial communities.

AIM: This study aimed to measure pandemic fatigue, physical and mental health, and job status of front-line medical staff in Ningbo. And to identify factors associated with pandemic fatigue. BACKGROUND: There was an acute increase in fatigue symptoms at the COVID-19 pandemic onset. The front-line medical staff is particularly vulnerable to fatigue due to their high-intensity work. DESIGN: This was a descriptive, cross-sectional study conducted using an online survey that included demographic data, investigation of COVID-19 history and job status. The Fatigue Assessment Scale, GAD-7 score and Sleep Quality Scale were used to collect data from 479 front-line medical staff. METHODS: The study involved 479 front-line medical staff in Ningbo, China. The survey was conducted using an online questionnaire that included demographic data, investigation of COVID-19 history and job status. The Fatigue Assessment Scale, GAD-7 score and Sleep Quality Scale were used to collect data. RESULTS: The results showed that of the 479 participants, 393 (82%) reported pandemic fatigue, 393 (82%) reported job satisfaction and 433 (90.4%) identified with their sense of job value. Sleep quality, work with a fever, economic subsidies for fighting COVID-19 and recognizing professional value were significantly correlated with pandemic fatigue. CONCLUSIONS: As the COVID-19 pandemic challenges front-line medical workers, implementing measures is essential. Health policy implementers could provide sufficient front-line medical staff to ensure rest in case of infection, promote sleep quality and foster professional value and financial subsidies in units. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE: The study shows how pandemic fatigue affects front-line medical staff during the COVID-19 pandemic and suggests measures to support them, including promoting sleep quality, providing rest for infected staff, fostering professional value and financial subsidies. The recommendations are relevant to clinical practice as they help support medical staff and ensure high-quality care for patients during the pandemic. Compared with single-targeted therapy, the design and synthesis of heterozygous molecules is still a significant challenge for the discovery of antitumor drugs. Quinone oxidoreductase-1 (NQO1) is a potential target for selective cancer therapy due to its overexpression in many cancer cells and its unique bioredox properties. Based on the principle of combinatorial drug design, we successfully synthesized a new hybrid molecules 13 with an indolequinone structure. We found that the synthesized compounds exhibited much higher cytotoxicity against the tested cancer cells than free drugs. Further mechanism studies confirmed that compound 13 induced cell apoptosis was achieved by regulating p53-dependent mitochondrial pathway and cell cycle arrest at the G0/G1 phase.

During the course of screening for anti-seed germination phytochemicals, the methanol fraction of the Cedrus deodara fresh needles showed potent activity. Bioactivity-guided fractionation led to the isolation of thirty-eight phenolic compounds. Four ones were identified as previously undescribed including (7S,8S)-3-methoxy-9'-acetoxy-3',7-epoxy-8,4'-oxyneoligna-4,9-diol (7), (7S,8R)-dihydro-3'-hydroxy-8-acetoxymethyl-7-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxy-phenyl)-1'-benzofuranpropanol (10), (8S)-4,9,9'-trihydroxy-3,3'-dimethoxy-8,4'-oxyneolignan (11) and (7S,8S)-4,7,9'-trihydroxy-3,3'-dimethoxy-9-acetoxy-8,4'-oxyneolignan (16), respectively. The potential phytotoxic effects of these compounds on the seed germination and root elongation of Arabidopsis thaliana were evaluated by the filter paper assay developed in our laboratory. Bioassay results indicated that caffeic acid (36) displayed most significant inhibitory activities against the seed germination and root elongation of A. thaliana, stronger than those of the commercial herbicides acetochlor and glyphosate at the same concentration of 200 µg/mL. Ditetrahydrofuran lignan (1), dihydrochalcone (25), and eight simple phenols (28, 29, 31, 33-35, 37 and 38) completely inhibited the seed germination of A. thaliana at the concentration of 400 µg/mL, which were as active as acetochlor. Dihydroflavone (21) and the simple phenols 32-34 displayed stronger inhibitory effects on the root elongation of A. thaliana than that of glyphosate. The inhibitory effects of these active compounds on the seed germination and root elongation of Amaranthus tricolor and Lactuca sativa were evaluated as well. The phytotoxic activity of 11, 16, 22, 25, 31, 34, 37 and 38 were detected for the first time. In addition, the structure-activity relationships of the same class of these phytochemicals were discussed.

ABSTRACT: Aims: Targeted temperature management is recommended for at least 24 h in comatose survivors of in-hospital cardiac arrest (IHCA) after the return of spontaneous circulation; however, whether an extension for 72 h leads to better neurological outcomes is uncertain. Methods: We included data from the Qilu Hospital of Shandong University between July 20, 2019, and June 30, 2022. Unconscious patients who had return of spontaneous circulation lasting >20 consecutive min and received endovascular cooling (72 h) or normothermia treatment were compared in terms of survival-to-discharge and favorable neurological survival. Propensity score matching was used to formulate balanced 1:3 matched patients. Results: In total, 2,084 patients were included. Sixteen patients received extended endovascular cooling and 48 matched controls received normothermia therapy. Compared with the normothermia group, patients who received prolonged endovascular cooling had a higher survival-to-discharge rate. However, good neurological outcomes did not differ significantly. Before matching, Cox regression analysis, using mortality as the event, showed that extended endovascular cooling independently affected the survival of IHCA patients. Conclusions: Among comatose patients who had been resuscitated from IHCA, the use of endovascular cooling for 72 h might confer a benefit on survival-to-discharge.

Objective @#To investigate the epidemiological characteristics of severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) in Dongyang City, Zhejiang Province from 2017 to 2022, so as to provide insights into SFTS prevention and control. @*Methods@#Data pertaining to patients with SFTS in Dongyang City from 2017 to 2022 were collected from Notifiable Infectious Disease Reporting System of Chinese Disease Prevention and Control Information System. The epidemiological and clinical characteristics of patients with SFTS were descriptively analyzed, and the trends in incidence of SFTS was evaluated using annual percent change (APC). @*Results@#A total of 32 SFTS cases were reported in Dongyang City from 2017 to 2022, with mean annual incidence of 0.63/105, and 8 cases died, with a fatality rate of 25.00%. The incidence of SFTS appeared a tendency towards a rise from 2017 to 2022 (APC=40.697%, P<0.05). The male to female ratio of SFTS cases was 0.78∶1, and farmer was the predominant occupation (31 cases, 96.88%). SFTS predominantly occurred among individuals at ages of 51 to 69 years (20 cases, 62.50%), and the incidence peaked during the period between March and May and between July and August (28 cases, 87.50%). SFTS cases were reported in 11 out of the 18 townships (streets) in Dongyang City, with the highest number found in Zuocun Township (8 cases, 28.13%), and had the lowest platelet count of (41.46±5.19)×109 platelets/L, with the lowest count of (3.00 to 67.00) ×109 platelets/L. All the SFTS cases had a history of mountain forest and farmland activities 2 weeks prior to onset of the disease, and 5 cases (15.63%) had a history of tick bites.@*Conclusions@#The incidence of SFTS appeared a tendency towards a rise in Dongyang City from 2017 to 2022, and SFTS was highly prevalent in spring and summer, with high incidence among farmers. Intensified health education of SFTS is recommended among residents in high-incidence areas.
