RESUMO

Reasonable design of non-noble metal catalysts with hollow open structure for hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of lignin derivatives to value-added chemicals is of great significance but challenging. Herein, a novel MOF-derived multilayer hollow sphere coated nickeltungsten bimetallic catalyst (Ni2-WOx@CN-700) was fabricated via by confined pyrolysis strategy using bimetallic MOFs as a self-sacrificial template, which exhibits robust activity for the typical model HDO of vanillin to 2-methoxy-4-methylphenol (Yield of 100 % at 140 °C for no less than 10 cycles). The characterizations revealed that WOx facilitated the dispersion of Ni nanoparticles and adjusted the acidic capacity of the catalyst through the formed Ni-WOx heterojunction. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirms that WOx species enhanced the electron-rich nature of the active sites, while the adsorption energies of H2 and vanillin on Ni-WOx decreased from -0.572 eV and - 0.622 eV on Ni to -3.969 eV and - 4.922 eV, respectively. These results further indicated that the high activity of Ni2-WOx@CN-700 was attributed to the Ni-WOx heterojunction. Based on the characterizations and the thermodynamic calculations, the reaction mechanism was proposed. In addition, the catalyst shows good substrate universality, which enables its good commercial application prospect.

RESUMO

Hydrodeoxygenation of furfural over non-noble metal catalyst is an effective route to synthesis 2-methylfuran, but the reaction is often hampered by the low activity and selectivity of the catalyst. Herein, a bimetallic catalyst with CuCo alloy encapsulated in a hollow nitrogen-doped carbon cages (CuCo/NC) are fabricated by using ZIF-67 as a sacrificial template, which exhibited superior catalytic performance and a full conversion of furfural with a 95.7 % selectivity towards 2-methylfuran was achieved at an under relatively mild reaction conditions (150 ℃, 1.5 MPa H2 and 4.0 h). The characterizations and density functional theory calculations clearly evidenced that the introduced Cu species acts as a switch to regulate the activity and selectivity of the catalyst via two aspects. On the one hand, the Cu species perturb the Co electronic structure leading to adsorption configuration of furfural change from flat to vertical on the catalyst surface, which successfully hindered the hydrogenation of furan ring, resulting high selectivity towards 2-methylfuran. On the other hand, the formed CuCo (111) sites promotes the dissociation of hydrogen, cleavage of the CO bond and reduces the diffusion barrier of hydrogen so as to advance the formation of 2-methylfuran. This work may provide a feasible strategy for the design of nanoalloy catalyst for the hydrodeoxygenation of biomass platforms to value-added chemicals.

RESUMO

Previous studies did not provide substantial evidence for long-term immune persistence after the hepatitis B vaccine (HepB) in preterm birth (PTB) children. Consequently, there is ongoing controversy surrounding the booster immunization strategy for these children. Therefore, we conducted a retrospective cohort study to evaluate the disparities in immune persistence between PTB children and full-term children. A total of 1027 participants were enrolled in this study, including 505 PTB children in the exposure group and 522 full-term children in the control group. The negative rate of hepatitis B surface antibody (HBsAb) in the PTB group was significantly lower than that in the control group (47.9% vs. 41.4%, p = .035). The risk of HBsAb-negative in the exposure group was 1.5 times higher than that in the control group (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 1.5, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.1-2.0). The geometric mean concentration (GMC) of HBsAb was much lower for participants in the exposure group compared to participants in the control group (9.3 vs. 12.4 mIU/mL, p = .029). Subgroup analysis showed that the very preterm infants (gestational age <32 weeks) and the preterm low birth weight infants (birth weight <2000 g) had relatively low GMC levels of 3.2 mIU/mL (95% CI: 0.9-11.1) and 7.9 mIU/mL (95% CI: 4.2-14.8), respectively. Our findings demonstrated that PTB had a significant impact on the long-term persistence of HBsAb after HepB vaccination. The very preterm infants (gestational age <32 weeks) and the preterm low birth weight infants (birth weight <2000 g) may be special populations that should be given priority for HepB booster vaccination.

RESUMO

Didymella contains numerous plant pathogenic and saprobic species associated with a wide range of hosts. Over the course of our mycological surveys of plant pathogens from terrestrial plants in Jiangxi Province, China, eight strains isolated from diseased leaves of four host genera represented three new species of Didymella, D. bischofiae sp. nov., D. clerodendri sp. nov., and D. pittospori sp. nov. Phylogenetic analyses of combined ITS, LSU, RPB2, and TUB2 sequence data, using maximum-likelihood (ML) and Bayesian inference (BI), revealed their taxonomic placement within Didymella. Both morphological examinations and molecular phylogenetic analyses supported D. bischofiae, D. clerodendri, and D. pittospori as three new taxa within Didymella. Illustrations and descriptions of these three taxa were provided, along with comparisons with closely related taxa in the genus.

RESUMO

Biological seed dressing is a cost-effective means to protect plant roots from pathogens. Trichoderma is generally considered as one of the most common biological seed dressings. However, there is still a dearth of information on the effects of Trichoderma on microbial community of rhizosphere soil. High-throughput sequencing was used to analyze the effects of Trichoderma viride and a chemical fungicide on microbial community of soybean rhizosphere soil. The results showed that both T. viride and chemical fungicide could significantly reduce the disease index of soybean (15.11% for Trichoderma and 17.33% for Chemical), while no significant difference was observed between them. Both T. viride and chemical fungicide could affect the structure of rhizosphere microbial community, they increased the ß-diversity of microbial community and significantly reduce the relative abundance of Saprotroph-Symbiotroph. Chemical fungicide could reduce the complexity and stability of co-occurrence network. However, T. viride is beneficial for maintaining network stability and increasing network complexity. There were 31 bacterial genera and 21 fungal genera significantly correlated with the disease index. Furthermore, several potential plant pathogenic microorganisms were also positively correlated with disease index, such as Fusarium, Aspergillus, Conocybe, Naganishia, and Monocillium. From this work, T. viride may be used as a substitute for chemical fungicide to control soybean root rot and be more friendly to soil microecology.

RESUMO

Reasonable construction of bi-function catalysts with well dispersed hydrogenation active sites and acidic sites are crucial for the hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of biomass-derived compounds but still a huge challenge. Herein, a 3D Mo functionalized Ni-based bimetallic embedded catalyst with fine metal nanoparticles size (<6 nm) was prepared for the first time using dendritic mesoporous silica as a sacrificial template by one-pot hydrothermal synthesis and adopted in the HDO process of vanillin (VAN) upgrade to 2-methoxy-4-methylphenol (MMP). The characterization results illustrated that Mo species regulated the acidity of the catalyst and promoted the formation of Ni-Mo alloy sites. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations further unveiled that Ni-Mo alloy sites promoted the activation and dissociation of CO bond in VAN, enhanced the ability of protonation hydrogenolysis. Benefitting from the synergistic effect of the highly uniformly dispersed hydrogenation metal sites and acidic sites, nearly 100% yield of MMP could obtained over the designed catalyst under mild conditions (130 °C, 1.5 MPa H2, 3 h, 10 wt% catalyst dosage). Additionally, the NiMo0.1@MSN catalyst displayed robust activity for no less than 8 recycles and excellent universality for the HDO of a variety of lignin derivatives and biomass platform molecules, which provide a feasible strategy for the construction of 3D confined catalysts for the high-efficiency HDO of biomass derivatives.

RESUMO

Real-world evidence on the effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines marketed in China against the Omicron BA.2.2 variant remains scarce. A case-control study was conducted to estimate the vaccine effectiveness (VE) of COVID-19 vaccines marketed in China (inactivated vaccines, an Ad5-nCoV vaccine, and a recombinant protein vaccine). There were 414 cases infected with SARS-CoV-2 and 828 close contacts whose test results were consecutively negative as controls during the outbreak of the Omicron variant in Lu'an City, Anhui Province, China, in April 2022. The overall adjusted VE against Omicron BA.2.2 variant infection in the vaccinated group with any COVID-19 vaccine was 35.0% (95% CI: -9.1-61.3%), whereas the adjusted VE for booster vaccination was 51.6% (95% CI: 15.2-72.4%). Subgroup analysis showed that the overall adjusted VE of the Ad5-nCoV vaccine (65.8%, 95% CI: 12.8-86.6%) during the outbreak while any dose of inactivated vaccines and recombinant protein vaccine offered no protection. The adjusted VE of three-dose inactivated vaccines was 48.0% (95% CI: 8.0-70.6%), and the two-dose Ad5-nCoV vaccine was 62.9% (95% CI: 1.8-86%). There is no protection from a three-dose recombinant protein vaccine. COVID-19 vaccines offered 46.8% (95% CI: 9.5-68.7%) protection from infection within six months. There were statistically significant differences between the VEs of heterologous booster (VE = 76.4%, 95% CI: 14.3-93.5%) and homologous booster vaccination (VE = 51.8%, 95% CI: 9.6-74.3%) (P = .036). Booster vaccination of COVID-19 vaccines offered more protection than full vaccination. A booster vaccination campaign for a booster dose after three doses of a recombinant protein vaccine must be urgently conducted.

RESUMO

High temperatures severely affect plant growth and pose a threat to global crop production. Heat causes the accumulation of misfolded proteins in the endoplasmic reticulum(ER), as well as triggering the heat-shock response (HSR) in the cytosol and the unfolded protein response (UPR) in the ER. Excessive misfolded proteins undergo further degradation through ER-associated degradation (ERAD). Although much research on the plant heat stress response has been conducted, the regulation of ER-localized proteins has not been well-studied thus far. We isolated the microsome fraction from heat-treated and untreated maize seedlings and performed proteome and ubiquitylome analyses. Of the 8306 total proteins detected in the proteomics analysis, 1675 proteins were significantly up-regulated and 708 proteins were significantly down-regulated. Global ubiquitination analysis revealed 1780 proteins with at least one ubiquitination site. Motif analysis revealed that alanine and glycine are the preferred amino acids upstream and downstream of ubiquitinated lysine sites. ERAD components were found to be hyper-ubiquitinated after heat treatment, implying the feedback regulation of ERAD activity through protein degradation.

RESUMO

High mobility electron gases confined at material interfaces have been a venue for major discoveries in condensed matter physics. Ultra-high vacuum (UHV) technologies played a key role in creating such high-quality interfaces. The advent of two-dimensional (2D) materials brought new opportunities to explore exotic physics in flat lands. UHV technologies may once again revolutionize research in low dimensions by facilitating the construction of ultra-clean interfaces with a wide variety of 2D materials. Here, we describe the design and operation of a UHV 2D material device fabrication system, in which the entire fabrication process is performed under pressure lower than 5 × 10-10 mbar. Specifically, the UHV system enables the exfoliation of atomically clean 2D materials. Subsequent in situ assembly of van der Waals heterostructures produces high-quality interfaces that are free of contamination. We demonstrate functionalities of this system through exemplary fabrication of various 2D materials and their heterostructures.

RESUMO

Background: In cervical cancer (CC), the involvement of pelvis lymph nodes is a crucial factor for patients' outcome. We aimed to investigate the value of conventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) combined with diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) and the apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) in predicting CC pelvic lymph node metastasis (PLNM). Methods: This retrospective study included CC patients who received surgical treatments. Surgical pathology results served as the gold standard for investigating the diagnostic performance of conventional MRI combined with DWI. We analyzed the association between tumor ADC and PLNM, as well as other pathological factors. The areas under the receiver operating characteristic curves (AUCs) for ADC in assessing PLNM and pathological factors were evaluated, and optimal cut-off points were obtained. Results: A total of 261 CC patients were analyzed. PLNM patients had significantly lower tumor ADC (0.829 ± 0.144×10-3mm2/s vs. 1.064 ± 0.345×10-3mm2/s, p<0.0001), than non-PLNM CC. The agreement between conventional MRI combined with DWI and pathological results on PLNM diagnosis was substantial (Kappa=0.7031, p<0.0001), with 76% sensitivity, 94.31% specificity, and 90.8% accuracy. The AUC of tumor ADC was 0.703, and the optimal cut-off was 0.95×10-3 mm2/s. In multivariate analysis model 1, tumor ADC<0.95×10-3mm2/s was significantly associated with PLNM (OR, 2.83; 95%CI, 1.08-7.43; p= 0.0346) after adjusting for age and pathological risk factors. In multivariate analysis model 2, tumor ADC<0.95×10-3mm2/s (OR, 4.00; 95%CI, 1.61-9.89; p=0.0027), age<35 years old (OR, 2.93; 95%CI, 1.04-8.30; p=0.0428), increased tumor diameter on MRI (OR, 2.17; 95%CI, 1.18-3.99; p=0.0128), vaginal vault involvement on MRI (OR, 2; 95%CI, 1.002-3.99; p=0.0494) were independent predictors for PLNM. Tumor ADC<0.95×10-3mm2/s was significantly associated with higher risk of tumor diameter ≥4cm (OR, 2.60; 95%CI, 1.43-4.73; p=0.0017), muscular layer infiltration >1/2 (OR, 5.46; 95%CI, 3.19-9.34; p<0.0001), vaginal vault involvement (OR, 2.25; 95%CI, 1.28-3.96; p=0.0051), and lymphovascular space involvement (OR, 3.81; 95%CI, 2.19-6.63; p<0.0001). Conclusion: Conventional MRI combined with DWI had a good diagnostic performance in detecting PLNM. The tumor ADC value in PLNM patients was significantly lower than that in non-PLNM patients. Tumor ADC <0.95×10-3mm2/s, age <35 years old, increased tumor diameter on MRI, vaginal vault involvement on MRI were independent predictors for PLNM.

RESUMO

This study aimed to explore the impact of ozonated water (OW) disinfestation on soil fungal community composition in continuous ginger field. All soil samples were collected in continuous ginger field. There were two groups and 5 time points (0, 1, 3, 5, 9 day) in our study, including OW disinfestation treatment group (O3 group) and control group (CK group). Via internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequencing and further analysis, the changes of fungal community composition were determined. As a result, at 0 and 9 days after aeration, the operational taxonomic units (OTUs) in O3 group were significantly higher than that in CK group. Compared with the CK group, in O3 group: the ACE and Chao1 index significantly increased on day 1, and the Shannon index significantly decreased while Simpson index significantly increased on day 0 after aeration. In O3 group, there were dynamic changes of top 10 abundance fungi from the genus-level and the growth of Trichoderma and Rhodotorula had been promoted while Hannaella was inhibited. In conclusion, OW disinfestation had complicated impacts on fungal communities in continuous ginger fields. The growth of Trichoderma and Rhodotorula has been promoted during disinfestation, which provided more reference information for soil OW disinfestation research.

RESUMO

Mycoviruses are widespread in all major groups of plant-pathogenic fungi. So far, only one mycovirus has been reported to be associated with Fusarium pseudograminearum, the causal agent of Fusarium crown rot of wheat. In this study, a double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) segment was isolated from F. pseudograminearum strain JW2-1, and the sequence of its full-length cDNA (3077 nucleotides) was determined. Sequence analysis using the fungal mitochondrial genetic code (UGA coding for tryptophan) indicated that a single large open reading frame (ORF) is present on the positive strand of this dsRNA segment. The ORF encodes a putative RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp) of 748 amino acids (aa) with a molecular mass of 83.46 kDa. BLASTp analysis revealed that its aa sequence was 28.49-44.03% identical to those of viruses of the family Mitoviridae, with the most similarity to the corresponding RdRp sequences of Ophiostoma mitovirus 1c (44.03% identity) and Ophiostoma mitovirus 1b (40.33% identity). Phylogenetic analysis showed that this mycovirus, designated as "Fusarium pseudograminearum mitovirus 1" (FpgMV1), should be classified as a member of a new species in the earlier proposed genus "Duamitovirus" within the family Mitoviridae. To our best of our knowledge, this is the first report of a mitovirus infecting F. pseudograminearum.

RESUMO

Maize (Zea mays L.) is one of the most important food and feed crops in China, with a cultivation area of more than 40 million hectares (http://www.fao.org/faostat/en/#data/QC). In July 2021, a serious maize seeding blight occurred in Changjia Town, Gaoqing Country, Zibo City, Shandong Province, China, and the disease incidence was up to 50% in some fields. The root system of infected plants displayed poor development. The primary roots were brown and rotted. The leaves at the base of the plants were drying up, then the whole plant withered. To determine the cause agent of the disease, symptomatic roots of diseased seedlings were collected and surface-sterilized (70% ethanol for 30 s and 3% sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) for 90 s), subsequently rinsed three times with sterile distilled water, placed on potato dextrose agar (PDA), then incubated at 25°C for 2 days. Two cultures with similar morphological characteristics were purified through single-spore isolation technique and identified by morphology and molecular methods as Fusarium pseudograminearum O'Donnell & T. Aoki 1999. Plentiful macroconidia formed in 5-day-old carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) cultures; microconidia were absent. Macroconidia were thick-walled and curved, usually 3- to 5- septa, 31.6 ± 0.6 µm × 4.8 ± 0.1 µm (n = 50). Colony pigmentation on PDA was pink to red, with white to pink aerial mycelia on PDA cultures was abundant and filled the petri dishes. For molecular identification, the rDNA internal transcribed spacer (ITS) gene and translation elongation factor 1 alpha (TEF-1α) gene of two isolates (SAIA41B and SAIA41C) were amplified with ITS1/ITS4 (White et al., 1990) and EF-1/EF-2 (O'Donnell et al., 1998), respectively. Blastn analysis of both the ITS sequence (accession numbers OM108101 and OM108102) and TEF-1α sequence (accession numbers OM142205 and OM142206) revealed 100% (481/481 bp for ITS and 637/637 bp for TEF-1α) sequence identity with the sequences of F. pseudograminearum reported in GenBank (MW699613 for ITS and JN862232 for TEF-1α). The molecular identification was further confirmed by the F. pseudograminearum species-specific PCR primers Fp1-1/Fp1-2 (Aoki and O'Donnell 1999). The expected 523-bp fragments were obtained for isolates SAIA41B and SAIA41C. In the pathogenicity test, healthy germinating maize roots (Zhengdan958) were inoculated with PDA culture blocks of isolate SAIA41C. Plants inoculated only with PDA culture blocks served as controls. Maize plants were put in petri dishes and placed in an incubator with a 12-h photoperiod at 25 oC and 100% relative humidity. Seven days later, roots of the plants inoculated with isolate SAIA41C were poorly developed and became brown necrotic and rotted, which were identical to the symptoms observed in the fields, whereas the roots of control plants were developed normally. The pathogen was re-isolated from the necrotic tissue of the inoculated roots but not from the control plants, and its identity was confirmed by PCR with the primes Fp1-1/Fp1-2 described above, fulfilling Koch's Postulates. To our knowledge, this is the first report of maize seedling blight caused by F. pseudograminearum in China. Our finding indicates the potential spread of F. pseudograminearum on maize, and more attention should be paid to prevention and control of maize seedling blight caused by F. pseudograminearum. The author(s) declare no conflict of interest. RESUMO

Peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.), one of the most important oilseed crops in tropical and subtropical regions of the world (Kumar and Kirti 2011), is widely cultivated for its high protein and oil content in seeds. In August 2019, about 30% of A. hypogaea plants were found infected by leaf spot in the peanut-growing regions of Shandong Province, China. Disease symptoms appeared as the irregular and brown necrotic lesions on leaves that were 0.5 to 5.0 mm in diam. Twenty symptomatic plants were randomly sampled from peanut planting areas in Weihai and Yantai City. Small pieces (3 mm2) were cut from lesions, dipped in a 0.5% NaClO for 10 min, rinsed three times with sterilized distilled water, dried, placed onto potato-dextrose agar (PDA), and incubated in the dark at 25°C for 10 days. Three typical Cladosporium-like strains were isolated from diseased leaves of peanut. The colonies were grey to olivaceous green, reverse olivaceous black and woolly. The conidiophores were solitary, macronematous, unbranched or branched, straight or flexuous, cylindrical, slightly swollen at the apex, smooth. Conidiogenous cells were integrated, terminal and intercalary, with numerous loci on nodulose swelling. Ramoconidia were cylindrical, oblong, fusiform, 8.0 to 19.5×2.0 to 4.5 µm, aseptate or 1 septum, pale brown. Conidia were catenate, in densely branched chains, ellipsoid, ovoid, limoniform, aseptate, 4.0 to 11.5×2.5 to 5.5 µm, smooth, with conspicuous hila. The conidia easily break off from the chains. The morphological characteristics of these isolates matched the descriptions of Cladosporium tenuissimum (Bensch et al. 2010). For the molecular identification, the partial actin (act) and translation elongation factor 1-alpha (tef1) genes were amplified and sequenced using the respective primers ACT-512F/ACT-783R and EF1-728F/EF1-986R (Carbone and Kohn 1999). The representative sequences, deposited in GenBank (act: OL332701, OL332702 and OL332703; tef1: OL322090, OL322091 and OL322092), exhibited 99.6% and 100% identical to C. tenuissimum ex-type isolate CBS 125995 (HM148687 and HM148442). Phylogenetic analysis was done by Neighbor-Joining (NJ) analysis based on act+tef1 sequences. These three isolates were identified as C. tenuissimum by morphological and molecular characteristics. Pathogenicity of each C. tenuissimum isolate was tested on peanut in the greenhouse at 28°C with 75% relative humidity. Twenty plants of A. hypogaea were inoculated with the conidial suspension (1.0 × 105 conidia/ml) on the leaf surface. Ten plants were mock inoculated with sterile water as controls. Within 2 weeks, inoculated plants exhibited dark necrotic lesions on leaves which were similar to the symptoms observed in the field, while the mock inoculated plants remained symptomless. The fungal pathogen which was reisolated from inoculated rather than mock inoculated leaf tissues was identical to the original pathogen on the basis of morphological and molecular analysis, confirming Koch's postulates. To our knowledge, this is the first report of leaf spot caused by C. tenuissimum on peanut in China. The C. tenuissimum infection poses a serious threat by reducing the yield and quality of peanut in Shandong Province. This research is especially valuable to enhance epidemiological studies and implement effective control strategies.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT: Triptorelin is one of the most commonly used gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonists and has been used in the treatment of deep infiltrating endometriosis (DIE). This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of up to 24 weeks of triptorelin treatment after conservative surgery for DIE.This prospective, non-interventional study was performed in 18 tertiary hospitals in China. Premenopausal women aged ≥18 years treated with triptorelin 3.75 mg once every 28 days for up to 24 weeks after conservative surgery for DIE were included. Endometriosis symptoms were assessed, using a visual analogue scale (0-10 cm) or numerical range (0-10), at baseline (pre-surgery) and routine visits 3, 6, 9, 12, 18, and 24 months after surgery. Changes in symptom intensity over time were primary outcome measures.A total of 384 women (mean [standard deviation] age, 33.4 [6.2] years) were analyzed. Scores for all symptoms (pelvic pain, dysmenorrhea, ovulation pain, dyspareunia, menorrhagia, metrorrhagia, and gastrointestinal and urinary symptoms) assessed decreased from baseline over 24 months. Cumulative improvement rates in pelvic pain, dysmenorrhoa, ovulation pain, and dyspareunia were 74.4%, 83.6%, 55.1%, and 66.9%, respectively. The 24-month cumulative recurrence rate (≥1 symptom) was 22.2%. The risk of symptom recurrence was higher in patients with ≥2 versus 1 lesion (odds ratio [OR] 2.539; 95% CI: 1.458-4.423; P = .001) and patients with moderate (OR 5.733; 95% CI: 1.623-20.248; P = .007) or severe (OR 8.259; 95% CI: 2.449-27.851; P = .001) pain versus none/mild pain. Triptorelin was well tolerated without serious adverse events.Triptorelin after conservative surgery for DIE improved symptoms over 24 months of follow up. The recurrence rate of symptoms was low and triptorelin was generally well tolerated.Trial registration number: ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT01942369.

RESUMO

Vaginal paraganglioma (VP), usually solitary and primary, is a rare adrenal type paraganglioma derived from the anterior neural crest, and can be classified as a functional or non-functional tumor. Only 10 cases of VP have been reported since 1955. Herein, we report an unusual case of a 39-year-old female VP patient with symptoms of hypercatecholaminism and a family history of hypertension. After preoperative control of blood pressure with an alpha-receptor blocker, laparoscopic surgery was performed. The blood pressure fluctuated after touching the tumor intraoperatively, and the tumor was successfully and completely removed under anesthesia by surgery. Postoperative pathology confirmed the diagnosis. The clinical characteristics, auxiliary examination, morphological and pathological immunohistochemical characteristics, and perioperative treatment of VP are analyzed, and the literature of the previous 10 cases is reviewed, so as to help further understand VP and provide clinical guidance.

RESUMO

Excitonic insulators (EIs) arise from the formation of bound electron-hole pairs (excitons)1,2 in semiconductors and provide a solid-state platform for quantum many-boson physics3-8. Strong exciton-exciton repulsion is expected to stabilize condensed superfluid and crystalline phases by suppressing both density and phase fluctuations8-11. Although spectroscopic signatures of EIs have been reported6,12-14, conclusive evidence for strongly correlated EI states has remained elusive. Here we demonstrate a strongly correlated two-dimensional (2D) EI ground state formed in transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) semiconductor double layers. A quasi-equilibrium spatially indirect exciton fluid is created when the bias voltage applied between the two electrically isolated TMD layers is tuned to a range that populates bound electron-hole pairs, but not free electrons or holes15-17. Capacitance measurements show that the fluid is exciton-compressible but charge-incompressible-direct thermodynamic evidence of the EI. The fluid is also strongly correlated with a dimensionless exciton coupling constant exceeding 10. We construct an exciton phase diagram that reveals both the Mott transition and interaction-stabilized quasi-condensation. Our experiment paves the path for realizing exotic quantum phases of excitons8, as well as multi-terminal exciton circuitry for applications18-20.

RESUMO

Head lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) is an important crop for fresh consumption in China. In Shandong Province, head lettuce is planted in spring and in autumn each year. Because of the on-and-off rain for three weeks, head lettuce plants planted directly into the field in Jiyang City, in July 2017, 20% of the plants rapidly showed symptoms of rotting, water-soaked lesions on roots and stem bases, and then death. The diseased plants first appeared in low-lying areas prone to water accumulation. One-millimeter pieces were excised from water-soaked roots and stem bases, dipped in a 0.2% calcium hypochlorite solution for 10 min, then placed on V8 medium, and incubated in the dark at 28°C for 5 d. Two Pythium-like strains were isolated from the roots and stems. The isolates transferred to CMA and grown for 7 d, and the morphological characteristics of the two isolates on corn meal agar (CMA) were white with dense, cottony, aerial and well-branched mycelia. The two isolates produced sporangia, oogonia, antheridia and oospores. Most of the sporangia were lobate. The oogonia were smooth, nearly globose and terminal. Oospores were globose, smooth and aplerotic. The average dimensions of 50 oogonia and oospores respectively ranged from 19.5 to 25.2 (av. 23.1) µm and 17.8 to 22.3 (av. 19.9) µm. The antheridia were broadly sac-shaped. The isolates morphological characteristics were consistent with P. aphanidermatum (van der Plaats-Niterink, 1981). The COI gene and ITS region of the rDNA were amplified and sequenced using primers FM55/FM52R (Long et al. 2012) and ITS1/ITS4 (White et al. 1990), respectively. The two aligned COI sequences were identical for both isolates, as were the two ITS sequences. BLASTn analysis of the 1,133-bp COI sequence (accession no. MT952703) resulted in a 100% identity with accession number AY129164 from Lactuca sativa, which belongs to P. aphanidermatum, and the 808-bp ITS sequence (accession no. MT921597) showed a 99% identity with Genbank accession number HQ643442 belonging to P. aphanidermatum. Koch's postulates were conducted by first soaking corn kernels for 24 h in water, and then autoclaving for 2 h at 121˚C. Isolate SDHL-1 was grown on CMA for 10 days, after which agar plugs were transferred to the sterilized corn kernels and incubated at 28℃ for approximately 15 d, until the corn kernels were covered in white hyphae. Ten healthy head lettuce plants were transplanted into a sterilized loam potting soil artificially infested with the corn inoculum (3 g inoculum per 100 g loam mixture). Inoculated plants and noninoculated controls were maintained in a greenhouse at 28°C and 100% relative humidity with a 12-h photoperiod; the experiment was repeated once. All twenty inoculated plants exhibited symptoms within one week similar to those observed. Pythium aphanidermatum was recovered only from the water-soaked roots and stem bases of inoculated plants and the re-isolated cultures again identified based on morphological characteristics and sequencing of the ITS and COI genes. No symptoms were observed on the control plants. Sclerotinia sclerotiorum is reported to cause stem base rot of L. sativa in China (Zhou et al. 2011). To our knowledge, however, this is the first report of root rot of head lettuce caused by Pythium aphanidermatum. Identification of the pathogen will assist in devising strategies to reduce yield loss.

RESUMO

IMPORTANCE: There is no current consensus on the role of chemotherapy in addition to radiation for postoperative adjuvant treatment of patients with early-stage cervical cancer with adverse pathological factors. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical benefits of sequential chemoradiation (SCRT) and concurrent chemoradiation (CCRT) compared with radiation alone (RT) as a postoperative adjuvant treatment in early-stage cervical cancer. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: After radical hysterectomy at 1 of 8 participating hospitals in China, patients with FIGO (International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics) stage IB to IIA cervical cancer with adverse pathological factors were randomized 1:1:1 to receive adjuvant RT, CCRT, or SCRT. Data were collected from February 2008 to December 2018. INTERVENTIONS: Patients received adjuvant RT (total dose, 45-50 Gy), CCRT (weekly cisplatin, 30-40 mg/m2), or SCRT (cisplatin, 60-75 mg/m2, plus paclitaxel, 135-175 mg/m2) in a 21-day cycle, given 2 cycles before and 2 cycles after radiotherapy, respectively. MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES: The primary end point was the rate of disease-free survival (DFS) at 3 years. RESULTS: A total of 1048 women (median [range] age, 48 [23-65] years) were included in the analysis (350 in the RT group, 345 in the CCRT group, and 353 in the SCRT group). Baseline demographic and disease characteristics were balanced among the treatment groups except that the rate of lymph node involvement was lowest in the RT group (18.3%). In the intention-to-treat population, SCRT was associated with a higher rate of DFS than RT (3-year rate, 90.0% vs 82.0%; hazard ratio [HR], 0.52; 95% CI, 0.35-0.76) and CCRT (90.0% vs 85.0%; HR, 0.65; 95% CI, 0.44-0.96). Treatment with SCRT also decreased cancer death risk compared with RT (5-year rate, 92.0% vs 88.0%; HR, 0.58; 95% CI, 0.35-0.95) after adjustment for lymph node involvement. However, neither DFS nor cancer death risk was different among patients treated with CCRT or RT. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: In this randomized clinical trial, conducted in a postoperative adjuvant treatment setting, SCRT, rather than CCRT, resulted in a higher DFS and lower risk of cancer death than RT among women with early-stage cervical cancer. RESUMO

Moiré superlattices of two-dimensional van der Waals materials have emerged as a powerful platform for designing electronic band structures and discovering emergent physical phenomena. A key concept involves the creation of long-wavelength periodic potential and moiré bands in a crystal through interlayer electronic hybridization or atomic corrugation when two materials are overlaid. Here we demonstrate a new approach based on spatially periodic dielectric screening to create moiré bands in a monolayer semiconductor. This approach relies on reduced dielectric screening of the Coulomb interactions in monolayer semiconductors and their environmental dielectric-dependent electronic band structure. We observe optical transitions between moiré bands in monolayer WSe2 when it is placed close to small-angle-misaligned graphene on hexagonal boron nitride. The moiré bands are a result of long-range Coulomb interactions, which are strongly gate tunable, and can have versatile superlattice symmetries independent of the crystal lattice of the host material. Our result also demonstrates that monolayer semiconductors are sensitive local dielectric sensors.
