RESUMO

A 2×2 photonic coupler is realized at the intersection of two 480nm×220nm silicon on insulator waveguides. The designed 2×2 coupler is simulated in both High Frequency Simulator System (HFSS) and Lumerical and shows an equal split of an input signal into transmitted and reflected signals for a 45 deg, ∼100nmSiO2 filled trench. The principle of operation of the coupler is frustrated total internal reflection. Thus, this behavior is reasonably flat across wavelength, which is confirmed by Lumerical simulations and by experiment. Also, it has been shown that this coupler has a flat behavior across trench thickness for the chosen geometry and material system, which makes it insensitive to fabrication variation and resolution. We are interested to make this coupler a part of silicon photonic foundry process development kits. Therefore, fabrication is done at the AIM Photonics Foundry to study the performance in the context of the foundry's design rules and process flow of the foundry. Good agreement between theory and experiment is reported herein. A 2×2 trench coupler is, when operated in the single photon or quantum regime, an integrated photonic realization of a Hadamard gate.

RESUMO

A sub-terahertz vortex dielectric waveguide was designed and fabricated in the cyclic olefin copolymer (TOPAS) compound. The annular index profile was engineered using a holey cladding to support operation from approximately 200-300 GHz. The vortex waveguide was tested at 280 GHz using an OAM-endowed Laguerre-Gaussian mode generated by a stepped spiral phase plate.

RESUMO

An optically based rigid-body six-degrees of freedom (DOF) measurement system optimized for prospective (real-time) motion correction in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) applications is described. By optimizing system capabilities to the specific applications requirements, the six-DOF measurement is accomplished using a single camera and simple three-disc fiducial at rates of 50 Hz. The algorithm utilizes successive approximation to solve the three point pose problem for angles close to the origin. Convergence to submicroradian levels occurs within 20 iterations for angles in an approximate half-radian (29°) arc centered on the origin. The overall absolute accuracy of the instrument is 10-100 µm for translational and <100 µrad (0.005°) for rotational motions. Results for head nodding and speech tasks are presented for subjects in the MR scanner, and the instrument results are compared to standard prospective acquisition correction.

RESUMO

A theoretical study of RF-photonic channelizers using four architectures formed by active integrated filters with tunable gains is presented. The integrated filters are enabled by two- and four-port nano-photonic couplers (NPCs). Lossless and three individual manufacturing cases with high transmission, high reflection, and symmetric couplers are assumed in the work. NPCs behavior is dependent upon the phenomenon of frustrated total internal reflection. Experimentally, photonic channelizers are fabricated in one single semiconductor chip on multi-quantum well epitaxial InP wafers using conventional microelectronics processing techniques. A state space modeling approach is used to derive the transfer functions and analyze the stability of these filters. The ability of adapting using the gains is demonstrated. Our simulation results indicate that the characteristic bandpass and notch filter responses of each structure are the basis of channelizer architectures, and optical gain may be used to adjust filter parameters to obtain a desired frequency magnitude response, especially in the range of 1-5 GHz for the chip with a coupler separation of ∼9 mm. Preliminarily, the measurement of spectral response shows enhancement of quality factor by using higher optical gains. The present compact active filters on an InP-based integrated photonic circuit hold the potential for a variety of channelizer applications. Compared to a pure RF channelizer, photonic channelizers may perform both channelization and down-conversion in an optical domain.

RESUMO

A single CCD/DSP camera based optical system affords six degree of freedom motion tracking for MRI applications with resolutions in the range of < 50 microradians and 10-100 microns. The fiducial target is a lightweight compact three dimensional pattern that allows efficient, centroid based algorithms to determine distance translation and angle rotation at rates of 30Hz. In-magnet tests measure the inherent magnet vibration as well as subject signatures such as those for respiration, speech, swallow and nod.

RESUMO

We designed, fabricated, and characterized a thermo-optically tunable compact (10 µm × 10 µm) silicon photonic crystal (PhC) light modulator that operates at around 1.55 µm for TE polarization. The operational principle of the device is the modulation of the cutoff frequency in a silicon-based line defect PhC. The cutoff frequency is shifted because of the thermo-optic tuning of the silicon refractive index, which is realized by localized heating on the PhC. The modulator is formed by a triangular lattice array of cylindrical air holes on a silicon-on-insulator wafer. Optical characterization was carried out, and the result clearly showed thermo-optic tuning of the cutoff frequency at around 1.55 µm.

RESUMO

In this paper, we study the synthesis of asymptotically stable filters from a unit cell of a two-dimensional tunable lattice filter architecture consisting of four four-port couplers and four waveguides containing semiconductor optical amplifiers. Upper bounds on the number of gains that will produce a filter with a priori prescribed poles, for a specific system, are obtained. We also provide sufficient conditions on the reflection-type coefficients, characterizing each four-port coupler, which ensure that real-valued gains, taking values in [0,1], exist so that the filter is asymptotically stable. Finally, we motivate the notion of a transmission zero of a filter and discuss the possibility of simultaneously placing both poles and transmission zeros for the unit cell.

RESUMO

A system theoretic model of a unit cell of a two-dimensional tunable lattice filter architecture consisting of four 4-port couplers and four waveguides containing semiconductor optical amplifiers is provided. It is shown that such multiple input-multiple output devices can be modeled in state space and by transfer function matrices. This modeling can also be extended to devices constructed by concatenations of the basic building block, the unit cell.

RESUMO

An optical coupler for integrated photonic circuits is presented and analyzed. The coupler is based on frustrated total internal reflection (FTIR) and offers high efficiency in a compact footprint. Analytic expressions for the transmission and reflection coefficients of the coupler are obtained using a plane-wave theory and experimentally verified. Finite-difference time-domain modeling of FTIR is discussed and modeling results of the coupler are presented. A parametric discussion of the FTIR coupler provides design tools for making 3 dB couplers.

RESUMO

An accurate motion-tracking technique is needed to compensate for subject motion during functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) procedures. Here, a novel approach to motion metrology is discussed. A structured light pattern specifically coded for digital signal processing is positioned onto a fiduciary of the patient. As the patient undergoes spatial transformations in 6 DoF (degrees of freedom), a high-resolution CCD camera captures successive images for analysis on a computing platform. A high-speed image processing algorithm is used to calculate spatial transformations in a time frame commensurate with patient movements (10-100 ms) and with a precision of at least 0.5 microm for translations and 0.1 deg for rotations.

RESUMO

Planar photonic integrated circuits based on four-port couplers offer enhanced sophistication and functionality. Each four-port coupler is characterized by sixteen signal coupling coefficients governed by ten energy constraints. The ability to generate the constrained sixteen coupling coefficients is needed in the analysis of the four-port coupler. However, the energy constraint equations are nonlinear and cumbersome to solve directly. We introduce two techniques to reduce these signal coupling coefficients to a set of six free parameters. Hence we can characterize all possible couplers in terms of their sixteen constrained coupling coefficients, or either of two sets of six free parameters. This reduction in parameters has significant ramifications for the design, specification, and empirical characterization of these useful building blocks.

RESUMO

Novel lattice-filter structures consisting of four-directional couplers are introduced, analyzed, and discussed. Four-directional couplers are discussed, and energy-conservation relations in a field-wave application are derived. A thick linear lattice filter is presented and studied as a simple extension to the traditional lattice. A two-dimensional lattice structure is also introduced and studied. Transfer functions are derived and discussed for several examples.
