RESUMO

We measure x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) spectra at the Pu M_{4,5} absorption edges from a newly prepared high-quality single crystal of the heavy-fermion superconductor ^{242}PuCoGa_{5}, exhibiting a critical temperature T_{c}=18.7 K. The experiment probes the vortex phase below T_{c} and shows that an external magnetic field induces a Pu 5f magnetic moment at 2 K equal to the temperature-independent moment measured in the normal phase up to 300 K by a superconducting quantum interference device. This observation is in agreement with theoretical models claiming that the Pu atoms in PuCoGa_{5} have a nonmagnetic singlet ground state resulting from the hybridization of the conduction electrons with the intermediate-valence 5f electronic shell. Unexpectedly, XMCD spectra show that the orbital component of the 5f magnetic moment increases significantly between 30 and 2 K; the antiparallel spin component increases as well, leaving the total moment practically constant. We suggest that this indicates a low-temperature breakdown of the complete Kondo-like screening of the local 5f moment.

RESUMO

Trivalent americium has a nonmagnetic (J=0) ground state arising from the cancellation of the orbital and spin moments. However, magnetism can be induced by a large molecular field if Am^{3+} is embedded in a ferromagnetic matrix. Using the technique of x-ray magnetic circular dichroism, we show that this is the case in AmFe_{2}. Since ⟨J_{z}⟩=0, the spin component is exactly twice as large as the orbital one, the total Am moment is opposite to that of Fe, and the magnetic dipole operator ⟨T_{z}⟩ can be determined directly; we discuss the progression of the latter across the actinide series.

RESUMO

The magnetic properties of the 5f(5) [tris-(tri-1-pyrazolylborato)-plutonium(III)] complex have been investigated by ac susceptibility measurements, showing it to be the first plutonium single-molecule magnet; its magnetic relaxation slows down with decreasing temperature through a thermally activated mechanism followed by a quantum tunnelling regime below 5 K.

RESUMO

It is suggested that systemic oxidative stress and inflammation play a central role in the onset and progression of cardiovascular diseases associated with the exposure to particulate matter (PM). The aim of this work was to evaluate the time changes of systemic markers of oxidative stress and inflammation, after an acute exposure to Residual Oil Fly Ash (ROFA). Female Swiss mice were intranasally instilled with a ROFA suspension (1.0mg/kg body weight) or saline solution, and plasma levels of oxidative damage markers [thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARSs) and protein carbonyls], antioxidant status [reduced (GSH) and oxidized (GSSG) glutathione, ascorbic acid levels, and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity], cytokines levels, and intravascular leukocyte activation were evaluated after 1, 3 or 5h of exposure. Oxidative damage to lipids and decreased GSH/GSSG ratio were observed in ROFA-exposed mice as early as 1h. Afterwards, increased protein oxidation, decreased ascorbic acid content and SOD activity were found in this group at 3h. The onset of an adaptive response was observed at 5h after the ROFA exposure, as indicated by decreased TBARS plasma content and increased SOD activity. The observed increase in oxidative damage to plasma macromolecules, together with systemic antioxidants depletion, may be a consequence of a systemic inflammatory response triggered by the ROFA exposure, since increased TNF-α and IL-6 plasma levels and polymorphonuclear leukocytes activation was found at every evaluated time point. These findings contribute to the understanding of the increase in cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, in association with environmental PM inhalation.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: It has been suggested that mitochondrial function plays a central role in cardiovascular diseases associated with particulate matter inhalation. The aim of this study was to evaluate this hypothesis, with focus on cardiac O2 and energetic metabolism, and its impact over cardiac contractility. METHODS: Swiss mice were intranasally instilled with either residual oil fly ash (ROFA) (1.0 mg/kg body weight) or saline solution. After 1, 3 or 5 h of exposure, O2 consumption was evaluated in heart tissue samples. Mitochondrial respiration, respiratory chain complexes activity, membrane potential and ATP content and production rate were assessed in isolated mitochondria. Cardiac contractile reserve was evaluated according to the Langendorff technique. RESULTS: Three hours after ROFA exposure, tissue O2 consumption was significantly decreased by 35% (from 1180 +/- 70 to 760 +/- 60 ng-at O/min g tissue), as well as mitochondrial rest (state 4) and active (state 3) respiration, by 30 and 24%, respectively (control state 4: 88 +/- 5 ng-at O/min mg protein; state 3: 240 +/- 20 ng-at O/min mg protein). These findings were associated with decreased complex II activity, mitochondrial depolarization and deficient ATP production. Even though basal contractility was not modified (control: 75 +/- 5 mm Hg), isolated perfused hearts failed to properly respond to isoproterenol in ROFA-exposed mice. Tissue O2 consumption rates positively correlated with cardiac contractile state in controls (r2 = 0.8271), but not in treated mice (r2 = 0.1396). GENERAL SIGNIFICANCE: The present results show an impaired mitochondrial function associated with deficient cardiac contractility, which could represent an early cardiovascular alteration after the exposure to environmental particulate matter.

RESUMO

High resolution spectroscopy (the finest being 0.01 cm(-1)) was applied in the 75-25,000 cm(-1) and 9-300 K ranges to a 1 mol% holmium doped Y PO(4) single crystal with two purposes: (1) to study the hyperfine splitting of Ho(3+) energy levels of interest for possible quantum manipulation media and (2) to analyze the electron-phonon interaction. The hyperfine structure was clearly revealed for a high number of lines in a wide wavenumber range (up to ~21,500 cm(-1)) and for a large number of multiplets. Several hyperfine patterns were monitored, differing in the number of components (a maximum of 16 could be easily distinguished in a single beautiful pattern), in their separation, and in their relative statistical weight. These features were all understood in terms of a crystal-field model, whose results are in good agreement with experiments and account for the involved level symmetry, the type of transitions (electric and magnetic dipole allowed), and the contribution of a second-order (pseudoquadrupolar) hyperfine coupling between close levels. The electron-phonon interaction, investigated through the thermally induced line shift, was critically discussed in the framework of single phonon coupling and of two phonon Raman scattering models.

RESUMO

{Np(VI)O2Cl2}{Np(V)O2Cl(thf)3}2 is the first studied example of a polymetallic transuranic complex displaying both slow relaxation of the magnetization and effective superexchange interactions between 5f centers. The coupling constant for Np(V)-Np(VI) pairs is 10.8 K, more than 1 order of magnitude larger than the common values found for rare-earth ions in similar environments. The dynamic magnetic behavior displays slow relaxation of magnetization of molecular origin with an energy barrier of 140 K, which is nearly twice the size of the highest barrier found in polymetallic clusters of the d block. Our observations also suggest that future actinide-based molecular magnets will have very different behavior to lanthanide-based clusters.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Active acromegaly is associated with increased mortality from cardiovascular causes. Several studies have shown increased atherogenic risk factors and biomarkers of inflammation and atherosclerosis in association with growth hormone excess. The aim of this study was to evaluate oxidized low density lipoprotein (oxLDL) levels and some modulators of LDL oxidative modification in patients with acromegaly. DESIGN: Open transversal study. PATIENTS: Fifteen patients with active acromegaly and 15 controls were studied. MEASUREMENTS: We evaluated the levels of oxLDL, thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), ceruloplasmin, bilirubin, uric acid and total reactive antioxidant potential, and the activities of ceruloplasmin, myeloperoxidase, superoxide distmutase, paraoxonase 1, and platelet activating factor acethylhydrolase. Statistical analysis was performed including body mass index as a covariate or as a fixed variable. RESULTS: Patients with acromegaly showed significantly higher levels of oxLDL (120 +/- 19 vs. 86 +/- 20 U/l, P < 0.001) and endothelin (P < 0.05), increased ceruloplasmin activity (P < 0.01) and a trend towards higher values in TBARS concentration (P = 0.07) in comparison to healthy controls. OxLDL was positively associated with GH, IGF-I and its binding protein 3 (r = 0.63, P < 0.001; r = 0.53, P < 0.01; and r = 0.56, P < 0.01; respectively). OxLDL showed direct associations with endothelin-1 (r = 0.53, P < 0.01) and ceruloplasmin activity (r = 0.43, P < 0.05). The other parameters evaluated were similar in both groups. CONCLUSIONS: The increase in plasma oxLDL levels, a direct marker of the plaque formation, could constitute a link between atherosclerosis and active acromegaly. LDL oxidation would not be the consequence of diminished antioxidant defences, but of an enhancement in prooxidant factors like ceruloplasmin.

RESUMO

The anisotropy of magnetic fluctuations propagating along the [1 1 0] direction in the ordered phase of uranium antimonide has been studied using polarized inelastic neutron scattering. The observed polarization behavior of the spin waves is a natural consequence of the longitudinal 3-k magnetic structure; together with recent results on the 3-k-transverse uranium dioxide, these findings establish this technique as an important tool to study complex magnetic arrangements. Selected details of the magnon excitation spectra of USb have also been reinvestigated, indicating the need to revise the currently accepted theoretical picture for this material.

RESUMO

Single crystals of Dy(3+)-doped YPO(4) have been grown from Pb(2)P(2)O(7) flux and investigated by optical spectroscopy techniques. The energy level scheme of the active ion has been deduced from the low temperature spectra and reproduced by means of a crystal-field calculation. The room temperature absorption spectra have been analysed in the framework of the Judd-Ofelt approach, and the results of this analysis have been applied in a discussion concerning the spectral composition of the visible luminescence.

RESUMO

We investigate the nature of the hidden order parameter in the ordered phase of NpO2, which had been identified with a staggered arrangement of Gamma5 magnetic multipoles. By analyzing the existing experimental data, we show that the most likely driving order parameter is not provided by octupoles, as usually assumed, but rather by the rank-5 triakontadipoles. Calculations of the coupled dynamics of spins, Gamma5 quadrupoles, and Gamma5 triakontadipoles in the ordered phase enable us to analyze the resulting structure of low-energy excitations. We show that the powder inelastic neutron scattering cross section should contain, in addition to the already-observed peak at 6.5 meV, a second weaker peak at about 14 meV.

RESUMO

The role of S mixing in the quantum tunneling of the magnetization in nanomagnets has been investigated. We show that the effect on the tunneling frequency is huge and that the discrepancy (more than 3 orders of magnitude in the tunneling frequency) between spectroscopic and relaxation measurements in Fe(8) can be resolved if S mixing is taken into account.

RESUMO

It is well known that patients affected by rheumatic diseases may present specific pathological trends in personality structure, as has been extensively reported in literature. Our study was aimed at investigating several aspects of the personality traits of 20 patients with psoriatic arthropathy, compared with a group of 20 patients with rheumatoid arthritis. All patients were evaluated with appropriate rating scales assigned in auto and hetero-administration. The study results points to a personality trait disturbance in psoriatic arthritis patients, which can be clearly differentiated from the anxious habitus and/or reactive-depressive state observed in patients with rheumatoid arthritis.

RESUMO

We examined 101 students (40 men, 61 women) aged 16-19 years, working 1-3 hours daily with video display terminals (VDT) with luminous green characters on dark background. McCollough visual aftereffect (ME) was reported, almost occasionally, in 80.2% of the examined group. 68% of the students referred daily ME appearance. Usually the effect appeared after 1 hour or less of VDT work and might persist for 1 hour or more. ME prevalence and persistence were significantly greater in women than in men. Apparently no relations were observed between ME prevalence and VDT work hours of visual defects. ME prevalence and persistence were significantly related to VDT induced visual asthenopia symptoms, but not with ocular asthenopia. According to our results, ME appearance may represent an early index of individual susceptibility to visual asthenopia induced by green characters VDT and/or be itself a precocious visual asthenopia symptom.
