RESUMO

Perphenazine belongs to the group of phenothiazine-based neuroleptic drugs frequently used in the long-term treatment of psychotic disorders. In this work, a new capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE) method for the rapid determination of perphenazine (PPZ) in pharmaceutical preparations and human blood serum was developed. Using solid-phase extraction (SPE) as a preclean/purification and preconcentration step before CZE analysis, a detection limit of 3 ng/mL for the monitoring of PPZ in blood serum (for a signal-to-noise ratio of 3) was reached.

RESUMO

A simple and rapid high-performance capillary electrophoresis (HPCE) method for the determination of 2-mercaptopyridine-1-oxide (pyrithione) was developed. After addition of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), pyrithione was determined in the form of the free anion using 50 mM borate (pH 9.2) as background electrolyte and was detected at 244 nm with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.636 ppm (S/N = 3). The method was used to check the purity of pyrithione preparations and for the determination of pyrithione in shampoo.

RESUMO

The authors present the preliminary results of an ongoing epidemiological study designed to determine the prevalence of back pain at selected worksites of Czechoslovak State Railways and Avia Letnany, an industrial plant. Examination of a total of 1,555 subjects was conducted by a field team of health-care workers of the Research Institute of Rheumatic Diseases based in Prague. The examination included a detailed medical history, physical examination and, in some probands, the results of HLA B 27 antigen determination, and x-ray examination. Overall, the prevalence of back pain in the cohort was 67%, with 63% and 76% in men and women, respectively. First complaints of back pain are most frequently reported by subjects in their 20s and 30s. The highest prevalence rate was registered in persons aged 50. The pain, as a symptom of a broad spectrum of pathological states, was most often localized in the lumbar and cervical segments of the spine -- 71% and 32%, respectively. In terms of the professions studied, the lowest prevalence was found in a group of manual workers employed at some worksites of the AVIA factory, with the highest frequency of back pain observed in an inconsistent group of diverse jobs, mostly requiring minimal training. In the Discussion section, the authors compare their results with those reported by some other studies published abroad.

RESUMO

Human leukocyte interferon (HLI) incorporated in ointment (4,000 units/g) applied topically for 4 weeks induced the process of "scavenging" granulation and epithelialization of stasis ulcers. This therapy had a better effect than that of the other combined local and general therapy also given in the study. A comparison of the effects of both therapies was made on nine pairs of stasis ulcers. A favorable effect of HLI on granulation and epithelialization was observed in a patient with deep burns, who had been given HLI topically in the form of powder and solution. This type of HLI activity calls for further clinical trials, especially as regards deep burns.
