RESUMO

Since the emergence of 2D magnets in 2017, the diversity of these materials has greatly expanded. Their 2D nature (atomic-scale thickness) endows these magnets with strong magnetic anisotropy, layer-dependent and switchable magnetic order, and quantum-confined quasiparticles, which distinguish them from conventional 3D magnetic materials. Moreover, the 2D geometry facilitates light incidence for opto-spintronic applications and potential on-chip integration. In analogy to optoelectronics based on optical-electronic interactions, opto-spintronics use light-spin interactions to process spin information stored in the solid state. In this review, opto-spintronics is divided into three types with respect to the wavelengths of radiation interacting with 2D magnets: 1) GHz (microwave) to THz (mid-infrared), 2) visible, and 3) UV to X-rays. It is focused on the recent research advancements on the newly discovered mechanisms of light-spin interactions in 2D magnets and introduces the potential design of novel opto-spintronic applications based on these interactions.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To examine the clinical and laboratory features and to measure treatment outcomes after using different disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs in patients of rheumatoid arthritis. METHODS: The observational study was conducted at the Rheumatology Unit of Federal Government Polyclinic Hospital, Islamabad, Pakistan, from March 15, 2014,to September 14, 2015, and comprised rheumatoid arthritis patients of either gender diagnosed according to the American College of Rheumatology criteria.Disease activity score-28 and a thorough examination of the joints were employed to assess disease activity. Data was analysed using SPSS 20. RESULTS: Of the 63 patients, 18(28.6%) were males and 45(71.4%) were females. The overall mean age was 43.09±13.03 years and mean duration of disease was 5.05±5.58 years. Seropositive disease was noted in 58(92.1%) patients and they had a higher level of erythrocyte sedimentation rate. Mean disease activity score-28 score at baseline was 5.52±0.99. At the end of 6 months, 44(69.8%) patients were in remission, 18(28.6%) had low disease activity and 1(1.6%) had moderate disease activity. The mean DAS score reduced to 3.11 0.77 at 6 months. Overall, 28(44.4%) patients had joint deformities. CONCLUSION: Females had a higher incidence of rheumatoid arthritis compared to males, and, overall, there was a high prevalence of joint deformities.

RESUMO

Mixed-valance manganites with strong electron correlation exhibit strong potential for spintronics, where emergent magnetic behaviors, such as propagation of high-frequency spin waves and giant topological Hall Effects can be driven by their mesoscale spin textures. Here, we create magnetic vortex clusters with flux closure spin configurations in single-crystal La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 wire. A distinctive transformation from out-of-plane domains to a vortex state is directly visualized using magnetic force microscopy at 4 K in wires when the width is below 1.0 µm. The phase-field modeling indicates that the inhomogeneous strain, accompanying with shape anisotropy, plays a key role for stabilizing the flux-closure spin structure. This work offers a new perspective for understanding and manipulating the non-trivial spin textures in strongly correlated systems.

RESUMO

Layered perovskites with Aurivillius phase have drawn tremendous attention recently, owing to their high ferroelectric Curie temperatures, large spontaneous polarization, and fatigue-free and environment-friendly characteristics. Bi2WO6 is one of the simplest members in the Aurivillius family with superior ferroelastic and photo-electrochemical behaviors. The self-assembly fabrication of its nanoarchitectures and strategic modulation of their ferroelastic switching are crucial toward highly efficient nanoscale applications. In this work, Bi2WO6 nanobrick arrays were epitaxially grown along the orthorhombic direction in a self-assembled way. Such a nanoscale topology supports out-of-plane and in-plane vectors of ferroelectric polarizations, enabling a perpendicular voltage manipulation of these emerging ferroelectric/elastic domains. Combining the scanning probe technique and transmission electron microscopy, we confirmed the in-plane polarization vectors of 78.6 and 101.4° within the crystallographic axes of the nanobricks with respect to the (110) plane of the substrate. Thus, this work provides new opportunities for ferroelectric/elastic engineering in Bi2WO6 nanostructures for a wide range of applications, such as sensing, actuating, and catalysis.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To assess knowledge and practices related to dengue management among physicians. METHODS: The cross-sectional study was conducted at hospitals in Islamabad, Lahore, Faisalabad, Peshawar, Quetta and Karachi between June and December 2012Physicians from public and private sectors filled a self-administered questionnaire about dengue knowledge and its management practices. A maximum score of 100 was assigned to the knowledge portion. Data was analysed using SPSS 15. RESULTS: A total of 400 subjects participated in the study; 200(50%) each from public and private hospitals. Of them, 223(56%) were males; 268(67%) were in the 21-30 years age bracket. The highest score was recorded in Quetta 67 followed by 65 in Karachi, 62 in Lahore, Faisalabad, Peshawar and 59 in Islamabad. Of the total, 200 (50%) were not aware that leucopenia is a criterion for diagnosing probable dengue. Similarly 140 (35%) did not know the criteria for diagnosing dengue haemorrhagic fever and warning signs of severe dengue. Total of 204 (51%) were not aware of the criteria for discharging of the admitted cases. There was no significant difference between dengue knowledge of the physicians belonging to public and private sectors (p>0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Quite a large number of physicians lacked knowledge of probable diagnosis of dengue and appropriate time to discharge the patients.
