RESUMO

Surface engineering of substrates offers the possibility of controlling the physiological functions of cells at the molecular level. Fluorinated graphene promotes the differentiation of MSCs towards neuronal lineages. Cell alignment using printed polydimethylsiloxane channel arrays on fluorinated graphene further enhances the neuro-induction of MSCs even in the absence of chemical inducers.

RESUMO

Highly sensitive, multicomponent broadband photodetector devices are made from PbSe/graphene/TiO(2). TiO(2) and PbSe nanoparticles act as light harvesting photoactive materials from the UV to IR regions of the electromagnetic spectrum, while the graphene acts as a charge collector for both photogenerated holes and electrons under an applied electric field.

RESUMO

Hybrids of organic semiconductors and graphene can generate a whole new class of materials with enhanced properties. A simple solution-phase route to synthesize a hybrid material made of organic nanowires and graphene oxide (GO) sheets is demonstrated by sonicating tetracene molecules and GO together in diluted fuming nitric acid. The self-assembled tetracene-derived organic wires become encapsulated by GO sheets during the reaction to produce an interconnected, one-dimensional/two-dimensional lamellar film. Memory devices fabricated using the hybrid film as the sandwiched layer between aluminum electrodes exhibit excellent electrical bistability. The charge retention properties are attributed to charge transfer and a charge-trapping/detrapping mechanism operational at the interfaces and isolated matrices of the GO-tetracene hybrid.

RESUMO

High-yield production of few-layer graphene flakes from graphite is important for the scalable synthesis and industrial application of graphene. However, high-yield exfoliation of graphite to form graphene sheets without using any oxidation process or super-strong acid is challenging. Here we demonstrate a solution route inspired by the lithium rechargeable battery for the high-yield (>70%) exfoliation of graphite into highly conductive few-layer graphene flakes (average thickness <5 layers). A negative graphite electrode can be electrochemically charged and expanded in an electrolyte of Li salts and organic solvents under high current density and exfoliated efficiently into few-layer graphene sheets with the aid of sonication. The dispersible graphene can be ink-brushed to form highly conformal coatings of conductive films (15 ohm/square at a graphene loading of <1 mg/cm(2)) on commercial paper.

RESUMO

We report a facile and general method for the preparation of alkylamine capped metal (Au and Ag) nanoparticle "ink" with high solubility. Using these metal nanoparticle "inks", we have demonstrated their applications for large scale fabrication of highly efficient surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates by a facile solution processing method. These SERS substrates can detect analytes down to a few nM. The flexible plastic SERS substrates have also been demonstrated. The annealing temperature dependent conductivity of the nanoparticle films indicated a transition temperature above which high conductivity was achieved. The transition temperature could be tailored to the plastic compatible temperatures by using proper alkylamine as the capping agent. The ultrafast electron relaxation studies of the nanoparticle films demonstrated that faster electron relaxation was observed at higher annealing temperatures due to stronger electronic coupling between the nanoparticles. The applications of these highly concentrated alkylamine capped metal nanoparticle inks for the printable electronics were demonstrated by printing the oleylamine capped gold nanoparticles ink as source and drain for the graphene field effect transistor. Furthermore, the broadband photoresponse properties of the Au and Ag nanoparticle films have been demonstrated by using visible and near-infrared lasers. These investigations demonstrate that these nanoparticle "inks" are promising for applications in printable SERS substrates, electronics, and broadband photoresponse devices.

RESUMO

A water soluble conjugated thiophene polymer, sodium salt of poly[2-(3-thienyl)ethoxy-4-butylsulfonate] (TPP), and graphene oxide (GO) composite film (GO-TPP) device was prepared. Transient photoconductivity measurements were carried out on the GO-TPP composite film using 150 ns laser pulses of 527 nm wavelength. Highly efficient photocurrent generation was observed from the GO-TPP film. The relationships of the film photoconductivity, photocurrent decay time and electron decay times with the incident light intensity were investigated. The photoconductive gain of the film was determined to be greater than 40% and to be independent of the light intensity. Furthermore, the femtosecond nonlinear optical properties of the GO-TPP film were measured using 800 nm femtosecond laser pulses and the composite film exhibited high nonlinear absorption and nonlinear refraction coefficients.

RESUMO

The dual role of graphene (or reduced graphene oxide) as atomic template and structural scaffold in the nucleation and assembly of organic nanostructures is demonstrated. The π-π stacking interactions between graphene and aromatic organic molecules affords synergistic binding interactions, with the host and guest assuming the interchangeable roles of atomic template and structural scaffold. Beginning with the seeding of organic wires on graphene template, the outgrown organic wires in turn act as one-dimensional scaffolds where graphene sheets coat around to form a unique graphene-organic hybrid structure. Using this π-assembly approach, we have synthesized one-dimensional hybrid structures consisting of graphene-N,N'-dioctyl-3,4,9,10-perylenedicarboximide (PDI) organic wires. This hybrid structure shows enhanced performance over its individual components in donor-acceptor type (PDI-Graphene/polythiophene) solar cells.

RESUMO

Hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) transplantation is an important therapeutic option for patients with hematologic malignancies. To explore the immunomodulatory effects of HSC mobilization agents, we studied the function and phenotype of CD4(+) T cells from 16 adult patients with hematologic malignancies undergoing HSC mobilization treatment for autologous transplantation. Immune cell function was determined using the Immuknow (Cylex) assay by measuring the amount of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) produced by CD4(+) cells from whole blood. ATP activity measured in G-CSF-treated patients was significantly higher than that measured in healthy individuals or "nonmobilized" patients. In patients treated with G-CSF, CD4(+) T cells were predominantly CD25(low)FOXP3(low), consistent with an activated phenotype. However, T-cell depletion did not abrogate ATP production in blood samples from G-CSF-treated patients, indicating that CD4(+) myeloid cells contributed to the increased ATP levels observed in these patients. There was a significant correlation between ATP activity and patient survival, suggesting that efficient activation of CD4(+) cells during mobilization treatment predicts a low risk of disease relapse. Monitoring immune cell reactivity using the Immuknow assay may assist in the clinical management of patients with hematologic malignancies and optimization of HSC mobilization protocols.

RESUMO

Monitoring of immune status in transplant recipients is essential for predicting the risk of rejection or infection. In this study, we assessed the significance of immune cell function in 76 renal allograft recipients after Thymoglobulin induction and initiation of maintenance immunosuppression. Using the Immuknow (Cylex Inc) assay, the amount of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) produced by CD4+ cells in response to phytohemagglutinin (PHA) was measured in patients whole blood. In parallel, the frequency and phenotype of CD4+ T cells were determined by flow cytometry. The Immuknow assay yielded paradoxically high ATP values during the first 3 months post-transplantation, despite very low CD4+ T cell counts. High ATP values were caused by peripheral blood myeloid cells, did not predict rejection, and occurred primarily in transplant recipients who received darbepoietin (p = 0.017). CD4+ T cells displayed predominantly an activated/memory phenotype and comprised a subpopulation of CD25+FOXP3+ cells. Over the first 5 months post-transplantation, mean ATP activity gradually decreased, whereas CD4+ T cell counts slowly increased. Low ATP values were predictive of infection (p = 0.002). Thus Immuknow results need to be interpreted with caution in patients receiving Thymoglobulin induction therapy. Although low ATP levels identify patients at increased risk for infection, high ATP values fail to correlate with rejection and do not justify increased immunosuppression.
