RESUMO

Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench) is a highly nutritional multipurpose millet crop. However, the genetic and molecular regulatory mechanisms governing sorghum grain development and the associated agronomic traits remain unexplored. In this study, we performed a comprehensive transcriptomic analysis of pistils collected 1-2 days before pollination, and developing seeds collected -2, 10, 20 and 30 days after pollination of S. bicolor variety M35-1. Out of 31 337 genes expressed in these stages, 12 804 were differentially expressed in the consecutive stages of seed development. These exhibited 10 dominant expression patterns correlated with the distinct pathways and gene functions. Functional analysis, based on the pathway mapping, transcription factor enrichment and orthology, delineated the key patterns associated with pollination, fertilization, early seed development, grain filling and seed maturation. Furthermore, colocalization with previously reported quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for grain weight/size revealed 48 differentially expressed genes mapping to these QTL regions. Comprehensive literature mining integrated with QTL mapping and expression data shortlisted 25, 17 and 8 core candidates for engineering grain size, starch and protein content, respectively.

The natural environment is often contaminated with hydrophobic pollutants such as long-chain hydrocarbons, petrochemicals, oil spills, pesticides, and heavy metals. Hydrophobic pollutants with a toxic nature, slow degradation rates, and low solubility pose serious threats to the environment and human health. Decontamination based on conventional chemical surfactants has been found to be toxic, thereby limiting its application in pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries. In contrast, biosurfactants synthesized by various microbial species have been considered superior to chemical counterparts due to their non-toxic and economical nature. Some biosurfactants can withstand a wide range of fluctuations in temperature and pH. Recently, biosurfactants have emerged as innovative biomolecules not only for solubilization but also for the biodegradation of environmental pollutants such as heavy metals, pesticides, petroleum hydrocarbons, and oil spills. Biosurfactants have been well documented to function as emulsifiers, dispersion stabilizers, and wetting agents. The amphiphilic nature of biosurfactants has the potential to enhance the solubility of hydrophobic pollutants such as petroleum hydrocarbons and oil spills by reducing interfacial surface tension after distribution in two immiscible surfaces. However, the remediation of contaminants using biosurfactants is affected considerably by temperature, pH, media composition, stirring rate, and microorganisms selected for biosurfactant production. The present review has briefly discussed the current advancements in microbially synthesized biosurfactants, factors affecting production, and their application in the remediation of environmental contaminants of a hydrophobic nature. In addition, the latest aspect of the circular bioeconomy is discussed in terms of generating biosurfactants from waste and the global economic aspects of biosurfactant production.

Metformin is an attractive candidate drug among all the repurposed drugs for cancer. Extensive preclinical and clinical research has evaluated its efficacy in cancer therapy, revealing a mixed outcome in clinical settings. To fully exploit metformin's therapeutic potential, understanding cellular factors relevant to its transport and accumulation in cancer cells needs to be understood. This review highlights the relevance of metformin transporter status towards its anti-cancer potential. Metformin transporters are regulated at pre-transcriptional, transcriptional, and post-translational levels. Moreover, the tumour microenvironment can also influence metformin accumulation in cancer cells. Also, Metformin treatment can regulate its transporters by altering global DNA methylation, protein acetylation, and transcription factors. Importantly, metformin transporters not only influence chemotherapeutic drug toxicity but are also associated with the prognosis and survival of individuals having cancer. Strategic decisions based on the expression and regulation of metformin transporters holds promise for its therapeutic implications and relevance.

Tobacco, being an established risk factor for significant mortality and morbidity, causes over 7 million annual deaths globally. India is a country with over 270 million active tobacco users. On the one hand, although the willingness to quit amongst tobacco users is as high as 55.4%, the actual quit rates translate to less than 20%. Taking a cue from the economic principle of commitment and consistency, paying a nominal fee can serve as a form of public commitment and motivation to decrease the dropout rate amongst those committed to quitting. This study uses contingent valuation assessment to determine the willingness to pay (WTP) values for an effective tobacco cessation service across individuals with different socio-demographic characteristics. A cross-sectional observational study with multistage cluster sampling in Rajasthan was conducted to recruit 360 active tobacco users from 8 districts. Q-Q plots were used to determine the non-parametric distribution, and statistical differences between median WTP values were compared using Mann-Whitney U and Kruskal-Wallis H tests, considering a p-value less than 0.05 to be statistically significant. The majority of participants were males (57.78%) between the ages of 26 and 35 (40.28%), married (82.50%), and with children (65.83%), with an annual income between USD 7500-10,000 (23.61%) and graduate-level education (40.56%). Exclusive smokers formed the majority of the cohort (48.06%), and 50.83% were willing to quit as well as willing to pay for cessation. Median WTP values were maximum for males (USD 54.05; p<0.05), age group 26-35 years (USD 54.05; p<0.05), post-graduates (USD 81.08; p<0.05), and annual income above USD 20,000 (USD 121.62; p<0.05). Weak positive and significant correlations were observed between WTP and annual spending on tobacco, annual spending on health, and annual income. The study emphasizes the critical importance of early-age interventions for effective tobacco cessation prior to transitioning into dependency, resulting in reduced financial parity for availing health services. These are the first such WTP values from the Southeast Asian region, tailored for different population subsets, specifically for tobacco cessation. Our findings contribute to the growing body of evidence to support innovative approaches to enhance tobacco cessation efforts through financial commitments.

Background Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a complex metabolic disorder associated with several complications that determine the quality of life of the patients. Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is a measurable outcome of the self-perception of a patient's health which is affected due to age, lifestyle changes, medication, and treatment modalities. This study was undertaken to understand the impact of individual parameters of age, medication type and duration, diabetes-associated complications, and levels of glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) on the quality of life (QoL) of the patient.  Methodology This single-center prospective, cross-sectional study was conducted at the Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS), Patna, Bihar, India. Participants were recruited from the Outpatient Department of General Medicine, IGIMS. HRQoL was measured using a validated and reliable EuroQol 5-dimensions 5-levels (EQ-5D-5L) questionnaire developed by the EuroQol Research Foundation, along with the EuroQol-Visual Analogue Scale (EQ-VAS). The eligibility criteria included adult diabetic patients above 18 years of age with complete medical records, who had been treated at the outpatient department for a minimum of three months and could be interviewed. Results The results from this study show that 46% of the patients belonged to the age group of 45-65 years. The quality of health index scores and EQ-VAS scores significantly correlated with age (p-values: 1.11 e-4 and 3.09 e-5; <0.05). Of the subjects, 66.4%, 6.7%, and 26.8% were under oral hypoglycaemic agents (OHA), insulin, and both insulin with OHA medications respectively. HbA1C levels were statistically significantly correlated with mobility, self-care, usual activities, pain or discomfort, and anxiety or depression (p-value 0.032; <0.05), along with self-perception of the patient's health (p-value 0.00026; <0.05). Also, the perception of having slight problems in mobility, self-care, usual activities, pain or discomfort, and anxiety or depression was similar irrespective of gender (EQ-5D-5L score for males: 9.47 and females: 9.3). Despite suffering from diabetes-associated chronic complications, 60.5% of the subjects perceived their overall health to be good as indicated by the scores. Conclusion The self-perception of HRQoL concerning mobility, self-care, usual activities, pain or discomfort, and anxiety or depression was correlated with age, duration of anti-diabetic medication, and HbA1C level. Good mobility, self-care, and performing usual activities reduce anxiety or depression as opposed to age, pain, and discomfort. However, the subjects in this study cohort perceived overall good health in themselves in terms of EQ-VAS and 5D-5L scores, indicating effective diabetic care and management options available to them.

Paper based point-of-care (PoC) detection platforms applying lateral flow assays (LFAs) have gained paramount approval in the diagnostic domain as well as in environmental applications owing to their ease of utility, low cost, and rapid signal readout. It has centralized the aspect of self-evaluation exhibiting promising potential in the last global pandemic era of Covid-19 implementing rapid management of public health in remote areas. In this perspective, the present review is focused towards landscaping the current framework of LFAs along with integration of components and characteristics for improving the assay by pushing the detection limits. The review highlights the synergistic aspects of assay designing, sample enrichment strategies, novel nanomaterials-based signal transducers, and high-end analytical techniques that contribute significantly towards sensitivity and specificity enhancement. Various recent studies are discussed supporting the innovations in LFA systems that focus upon the accuracy and reliability of rapid PoC testing. The review also provides a comprehensive overview of all the possible difficulties in commercialization of LFAs subjecting its applicability to pathogen surveillance, water and food testing, disease diagnostics, as well as to agriculture and environmental issues.

This study aimed to assess the nephrotoxicity associated with VRP-034 (novel formulation of polymyxin B [PMB]) compared to marketed PMB in a three-dimensional (3D) kidney-on-a-chip model. To model the human kidney proximal tubule for analysis, tubular structures were established using 23 triple-channel chips seeded with RPTEC/hTERT1 cells. These cells were exposed to VRP-034 or PMB at seven concentrations (1-200 µM) over 12, 24, and 48 h. A suite of novel kidney injury biomarkers, cell health, and inflammatory markers were quantitatively assessed in the effluent. Additionally, caspase and cytochrome C levels were measured, and cell viability was evaluated using calcein AM and ethidium homodimer-1 (EthD-1). Exposure to marketed PMB resulted in significantly elevated levels (P < 0.05) of four key biomarkers (KIM-1, cystatin C, clusterin, and OPN) compared to VRP-034, particularly at clinically relevant concentrations of ≥10 µM. At 25 µM, all biomarkers demonstrated a significant increase (P < 0.05) with marketed PMB exposure compared to VRP-034. Inflammatory markers (interleukin-6 and interleukin-8) increased significantly (P < 0.05) with marketed PMB at concentrations of ≥5 µM, relative to VRP-034. VRP-034 displayed superior cell health outcomes, exhibiting lower lactate dehydrogenase release, while ATP levels remained comparable. Morphological analysis revealed that marketed PMB induced more severe damage, disrupting tubular integrity. Both treatments activated cytochrome C, caspase-3, caspase-8, caspase-9, and caspase-12 in a concentration-dependent manner; however, caspase activation was significantly reduced (P < 0.05) with VRP-034. This study demonstrates that VRP-034 significantly reduces nephrotoxicity compared to marketed PMB within a 3D microphysiological system, suggesting its potential to enable the use of full therapeutic doses of PMB with an improved safety profile, addressing the need for less nephrotoxic polymyxin antibiotics.

Objective: This study used finite element analysis to simulate four commonly used fixation methods for metacarpal shaft oblique fractures during finger motion and evaluate their biomechanical performance. The aim was to provide evidence for clinically selecting the optimal fixation method, guiding early rehabilitation treatment, and reducing the risk of complications. Methods: Finite element analysis simulated dynamic proximal phalanx motion (60° flexion, 20° extension, 20° adduction, and 20° abduction). We analysed stress, displacement, and distributions for dorsal plates, intramedullary nails, Kirschner wire, and screw fixation methods. Results: At 60° of finger flexion and 20° of abduction, plate fixation demonstrated greater stability and minimal displacement, with a peak displacement of 0.19 mm; however, it showed higher stress levels in all motion states, increasing the risk of failure. The stability of the intramedullary nail was similar to that of the dorsal plate, with a maximum displacement difference of 0.04 mm, and it performed better than the dorsal plate during adduction of 20°. Kirschner wire showed the highest stress levels of 81.6 Mpa during finger flexion of 60°, indicating a greater risk of failure and unstable displacement. Screws had lower stress levels in all finger motion states, reducing the risk of failure, but had poorer stability. Stress and displacement distributions showed that the dorsal plate, intramedullary nail, and Kirschner wire mainly bore stress on the implants, concentrating near the fracture line and the proximal metacarpal. In contrast, the screws partially bore stress in the screw group. The anterior end of the metacarpal mainly hosted the maximum displacement. Conclusion: This study demonstrates that under simulated finger motion states, the dorsal plate fixation method provides the best stability in most cases, especially during finger flexion and abduction. However, high stress levels also indicate a higher risk of failure. The intramedullary nail is similar to the dorsal plate in stability and performs better in certain motion states. Kirschner wire exhibits the highest risk of failure during flexion. Although screws have poorer stability in some motion states, they offer a lower risk of failure. These findings provide important reference and surgical selection strategies for treating metacarpal fractures.

Phase-change memory (PCM) relies on the characteristics of phase-change materials that exhibit slow resistance state changes and enable multilevel operation with minimal resistance drift. They are emerging as promising candidates for artificial intelligence applications inspired by neuroscience and require high volumes of data. However, achieving the necessary qualities, such as thermal stability and fast operation speed, simultaneously is still a major obstacle for PCM materials. The present study investigated the linear and nonlinear optical and electronic properties of Te(1-x)(GeSe0.5)Y x (x = 0.05, 0.1, 0.15) thin films deposited via a thermal evaporation technique by structural characterization (using XRD), surface morphology analysis (using SEM), and elemental composition analysis (using EDX). Transmission spectra ranging from 500 to 2500 nm were obtained using a UV-visible spectrophotometer to determine the optical properties. The refractive index (n) and extinction coefficient (k) were also determined, and Tauc's relationship was applied to assess the optical absorption data. The absorption coefficient (α) was determined utilizing the Urbach relation. The Wemple-DiDomenico model was employed to calculate the nonlinear refractive index. Furthermore, the dielectric properties, loss tangent, and surface/volume energy loss functions were determined. The optical energy bandgap of the thin films revealed the allowed indirect transitions. The observed enhancement of the optical parameters suggested that the investigated composition is appropriate for different photonic applications.

BACKGROUND: Goat milk is gaining popularity as a superior alternative to bovine milk due to its closer resemblance to human milk. Understanding the molecular processes underlying lactation is crucial for improving milk quality and production in goats. However, the genetic mechanisms governing lactation in goats, particularly in indigenous breeds like the Jakhrana, remain largely unexplored. RESULTS: In this study, we performed a comprehensive transcriptomic analysis of Jakhrana goat mammary glands during early and late lactation stages. We isolated milk somatic cells and conducted RNA sequencing, followed by transcript quantification and mapping against the ARS1.2 Capra hircus reference assembly. Our analysis identified differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and commonly expressed genes (CEGs) across the lactation phases. Early lactation showed enrichment of genes encoding antimicrobial peptides and lubrication proteins, while late lactation exhibited heightened expression of genes encoding major milk proteins. Additionally, DEG analysis revealed upregulation of pivotal genes, such as the ABC transporter gene MRP4, implicated in modulating milk composition and quality. CONCLUSION: Our findings provide insights into the genetic mechanisms underlying lactation dynamics in the Jakhrana goat. Understanding these mechanisms could help in improving milk production and quality in goats, benefiting both the dairy industry and consumers.

Long COVID (LC) refers to a condition characterized by a variety of lingering symptoms that persist for more than 4 to 12 weeks following the initial acute SARS-CoV-2 infection. Recent research has suggested that the FOXP4 gene could potentially be a significant factor contributing to LC. Owing to that, this study investigates FOXP4's role in LC by analyzing public datasets to understand its evolution and expression in diverse human populations and searching for drugs to reduce LC symptoms. Population genetic analysis of FOXP4 across human populations unmasks distinct genetic diversity patterns and positive selection signatures, suggesting potential population-specific susceptibilities to conditions like LC. Further, we also observed that FOXP4 experiences high expression during LC. To identify potential inhibitors, drug screening analysis identifies synthetic drugs like Glisoxepide, and natural compounds Kapurimycin A3 produced from Streptomyces sp, and Cucurbitacin B from Begonia nantoensis as promising candidates. Overall, our research contributes to understanding how FOXP4 may serve as a therapeutic target for mitigating the impact of LC.

Forced intercalation peptide nucleic acids (FIT-PNAs) are DNA mimics that act as RNA sensors. The sensing event occurs due to sequence-specific RNA hybridization, leading to a substantial increase in fluorescence. The fluorophore in the FIT-PNA is termed a surrogate base. This molecule typically replaces a purine in the PNA sequence. BisQ is a surrogate base that connects two quinolines via a monomethine bond. BisQ-based FIT-PNAs have excellent biophysical features that include high brightness and red-shifted emission (λem, max = 613 nm). In this report, we detail two chemical approaches that allow for the facile synthesis of the BisQ PNA monomer. In both cases, the key compound used for the synthesis of BisQ-CH2COOH is the tBu-ester-modified quinoline synthon (compound 5). Subsequently, one method uses the Alloc acid-protected PNA backbone, whereas the other uses the tBu ester-protected PNA backbone. In the latter case, the overall yield for BisQ acid (compound 7) and BisQ PNA monomer syntheses was 61% in six synthetic steps. This is a substantial improvement to the published procedures to date (7% total yield). Lastly, we have prepared an 11-mer FIT-PNA with either BisQ or thiazole orange (TO) and studied their photophysical properties. We find superior photophysical properties for the BisQ FIT-PNA in terms of the brightness and selectivity, highlighting the added value of using this surrogate base for RNA sensing.

Outbreaks of the foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) have major economic impact on the global livestock industry by affecting the animal health and product safety. L-protease, a non-structural protein of FMDV, is a papain-like cysteine proteinase involved in viral protein processing as well as cleavage of host proteins for promoting the virus growth. FMDV synthesizes two forms of leader proteinase, Lpro (Labpro and Lbpro), where the deletion of Labpro is lethal and Lbpro deletion is reported to be attenuated. Defective replicons have been used by trans-complementing the deleted gene to produce one time replicating virus; thus, the bio-safety procedure can be compromised in the production units. Attempts are made to rescue of ΔLbproFMDV Asia1 virus by co-expressing the Lbpro protein carried in pcDNA plasmid. Mutant FMDV cDNA, pAsia-ΔLbpro, was constructed by PCR mediated mutagenesis using inverse primers. Transfection of BHK-21 cells with in-vitro transcribed RNA from the constructs failed to produce an infective mutant FMDV. Genetic trans-complementation of the Lbpro, which was done by co-transfecting the pcDNALbpro plasmid DNA along with the pAsia-ΔLbpro RNA in BHK-21 cells also failed to produce viable virus. Expression experiments of reporter genes and indirect immune-fluorescence confirmed the production of the viral proteins in wild type FMDV pAsiaWT; however, it was absent in the pAsia-ΔLbpro indicating that the leaderless virus was unable to produce infectious progeny and infect the cells. Failure to produce virus either by Lbpro deleted mutant clone or by genetic complementation suggests little chance of reversion of the disabled virus with large deletions of FMDV genome.

Background: Quality of life (QOL) refers to an individual's perception of their overall life and well-being. As people age, their QOL often deteriorates. Although various outcome measures exist to assess QOL, most are limited in scope and not specific to the Indian ethnicity of geriatrics. Therefore, a new outcome measure was developed and validated to more accurately evaluate the QOL for the geriatric population in India. Methods: The outcome measure was developed in three stages, followed by validation. Data was collected using multistage cluster sampling from 13 subdivisions of Jaipur district. A total of 423 participants were interviewed face-to-face. The collected data was analyzed using SPSS version 20, and the reliability and validity of the outcome measure were assessed. Results: The Indian Geriatrics Quality of Life Inventory (IGQOL) scale demonstrated excellent reliability, with a Cronbach's alpha (α) of 0.95 and an intraclass correlation coefficient of 0.93. The measure also exhibited excellent face and content validity, with a K value of 1. Correlation analysis revealed a significant relationship with other outcome measures, with a Pearson correlation coefficient value of > 7 and a p-value of < 0.05. Conclusion: The study concludes that the IGQOLI scale is a reliable and valid outcome measure for evaluating the QOL in the geriatric population in India.

Gamma oscillations (30-120 Hz) in the brain are not periodic cycles, but they typically appear in short-time windows, often called oscillatory bursts. While the origin of this bursting phenomenon is still unclear, some recent studies hypothesize its origin in the external or endogenous noise of neural networks. We demonstrate that an exact neural mass model of excitatory and inhibitory quadratic-integrate and fire-spiking neurons theoretically predicts the emergence of a different regime of intrinsic bursting gamma (IBG) oscillations without any noise source, a phenomenon due to collective chaos. This regime is indeed observed in the direct simulation of spiking neurons, characterized by highly irregular spiking activity. IBG oscillations are distinguished by higher phase-amplitude coupling to slower theta oscillations concerning noise-induced bursting oscillations, thus indicating an increased capacity for information transfer between brain regions. We demonstrate that this phenomenon is present in both globally coupled and sparse networks of spiking neurons. These results propose a new mechanism for gamma oscillatory activity, suggesting deterministic collective chaos as a good candidate for the origin of gamma bursts.

INTRODUCTION: Leptospirosis and melioidosis are common in tropical and temperate climates and can be acquired by exposure to contaminated water and soil. However, concomitant leptospirosis and melioidosis infection is rarely described in the literature. We report a case of leptospirosis-melioidosis coinfection and systematically review the literature. CASE PRESENTATION: A 42-year-old male presented with fever associated with chills and rigor, dull aching pain in the right thigh, myalgia, progressive breathlessness, and dry cough for 10 days. At presentation, he was tachypneic and had tachycardia, and oxygen saturation was 46% in room air. Chest radiography and computed tomography scan showed interstitial involvement. Magnetic resonance imaging for thigh pain revealed right femur osteomyelitis. Leptospira serology was positive, and blood culture grew Burkholderia pseudomallei, confirming the diagnosis of melioidosis. Thus, a diagnosis of presumptive leptospirosis based on modified Faine's criteria and systemic melioidosis was made. He received doxycycline and intravenous meropenem and improved. RESULTS: We performed a systematic review to understand the spectrum of leptospirosis-melioidosis coinfection. We identified only nine cases of coinfection described in literature. Only one patient had septic arthritis, and our case is the only one presenting with osteomyelitis. Serology diagnosed leptospirosis, whereas melioidosis was confirmed by blood culture in most patients. The majority of coinfected patients developed some complications, and six died. CONCLUSIONS: Leptospirosis-melioidosis coinfection is rarely reported in the literature. Physicians should maintain a high index suspicion of leptospirosis-melioidosis coinfection in patients presenting with acute febrile illness following exposure to soil or freshwater, particularly in tropical and endemic regions.

Climate change is a topic that becomes increasingly relevant with each passing day. I've encountered buzzwords like carbon emissions resulting from industries, greenhouse gases, climate change, global warming, carbon offsetting, carbon neutrality, and more. Recently, at the G20 summit in New Delhi, it was a matter of serious concern among global leaders. Carbon dioxide (CO2) plays a vital role in our atmosphere by helping to regulate Earth's temperature. Each individual actively contributes to the carbon footprint, whether directly or indirectly. Major contributors to our carbon footprint include transportation, electricity, home heating, and increased affluence, which leads to greater production. Around the world, various efforts are underway to combat the ongoing harm to our planet caused by this man-made issue. Whether these attempts are genuine or merely superficial is a different discussion, but various technologies, methods, and government policies aim to control the magnitude of this threat. Reducing waste production, reusing materials, and enhancing recycling are all helpful strategies. Adopting a plant-based diet goes a long way in supporting the planet. Every individual bears responsibility for their own consumption and should be willing to change their lifestyle. The goal should be achieving zero emissions rather than settling for net-zero carbon emissions.

Black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) are considered important organisms, utilized as tools to transform waste including manure into valuable products. The growth and cultivation of BSFL are influenced by various factors, such as the presence of toxic substances in the feed and parasites. These factors play a crucial role in hormesis, and contributing to regulate these contaminants hermetic doses to get sustainable byproducts. This review aims to understand the effects on BSFL growth and activities in the presence of compounds like organic and inorganic pollutants. It also assesses the impact of microbes on BSFL growth and explores the bioaccumulation of pharmaceutical compounds, specifically focusing on heavy metals, pesticides, pharmaceuticals, indigenous bacteria, insects, and nematodes. The review concludes by addressing knowledge gaps, proposing future biorefineries, and offering recommendations for further research.

Thermochemical treatment is rapidly emerging as an alternative method for the management of stabilised sewage sludges (biosolids) to effectively reduce waste volume, degrade contaminants, and generate valuable products, particularly biochar and hydrochar. Biosolids-derived char has a relatively high concentration of heavy metals compared with agricultural chars but is still applied to land due to its beneficial properties and ability to retain metals. However, non-agricultural applications can provide additional economic and environmental benefits, promote sustainability and support a circular economy. This review identifies extensive non-agricultural opportunity for biosolids biochar, including adsorption, catalysis, energy storage systems, biological process enhancement, and as additives for rubber compounding and construction. Biosolids chars have received limited attention vs agricultural char, and we draw on both areas of literature, as well as evaluating differences between agricultural and biosolids chars. A key opportunity for biosolids biochar in comparison with other materials and agricultural chars is its sustainable and low-cost nature, relatively high metals content, improving catalyst properties, and ability to modify in various stages to tune it to specific applications. The specific opportunities for hydrochar have only received limited attention. Research needs to include better understanding of the benefits and limitations for specific applications, as well as adjacent drivers, including society, regulation, and market and economics.
