RESUMO

In this work, we demonstrate for the first time that Thermal Lens Microscopy technique (TLM) can be applied to monitor the dynamics of a photocatalytic process in-situ. The photocatalytic reduction of hexavalent chromium -Cr(VI)- in aqueous solution using CdS and irradiated with visible light is monitored by TLM. Since the values of Cr(VI) concentration obtained after the photocatalytic process were close to those imposed by the international regulations for drinking water, the use of TLM allowed its measurement with a better reliability than with UV spectroscopy, usually used in this kind of analysis.

RESUMO

In this work, a low detection limit for hexavalent chromium in water of parts per trillions (21ng/L) was achieved using a micro-spatial thermal lens spectroscopy setup with coaxial counter-propagating pump and probe laser beams and an integrated passive optical Fabry-Perot resonator, aided with a well-established diphenyl carbazide colorimetric method. Cr-VI concentrations in the range of µg/L, i.e. well-below the toxicity thresholds in humans and animals (26 and 190mg/L respectively) and below those delimited by international regulations for drink water (~0.05-0.5mg/L), have been obtained by measurements in bottled and tap water samples. The developed thermal lens microscope is also capable to detect Cr-VI directly in potassium dichromate solutions using pump beam wavelengths within the very low optical absorption region in the visible part of the spectrum, i.e., without the use of any colorimetric method.

RESUMO

A technique is proposed for thermal diffusivity measurement in fluids. It is based on the Angstrom method, but with excitation of thermal waves by electromagnetic energy absorption and pyroelectric detection. The good agreement between measured thermal diffusivity of air and some test liquids with literature values shows the validity of the method. It is free of some limitations of conventional photopyroelectric technique with length scanning because it is free of moving parts inside the sample and because it avoids problems associated with the non-parallelism between thermal wave generator surface and sensor. It does not require any data normalization procedure or special sample preparation.

RESUMO

In this report the temperature dependence of the coefficient of electronic polarizability (straight phi(i)) is determined by means of the thermal expansion coefficient (beta) and ordinary/extraordinary refractive indexes measurements near the calamitic nematic-isotropic phase transition in a lyotropic mixture of sodium decylsulphonate, decanol, and water. These parameters (straight phi(i) and beta) were related to the extraordinary and ordinary refractive indexes via the temperature derivative of the Vuks's equation. The results showed that near the nematic-isotropic phase transition, the measured value of straight phi(i) was found to be about two orders of magnitude smaller than that obtained for thermotropic, showing a remarkable difference in the molecular electronic polarizability strength between lyotropic and thermotropic liquid crystals.

RESUMO

The laser-induced nonlinear optical response of a lyotropic liquid crystal system in the reentrant-isotropic and calamitic-nematic phases is investigated by the use of the thermal lens technique. The occurrence of an inversion in the temperature coefficient of the ordinary refractive index, dn(radially)/dT, near the reentrant-isotropic-calamitic-nematic phase transition, is discussed. This effect is attributed to the behavior of the electronic polarizability due to the change in micelle shape near the isotropic-nematic transition, and correlated with the results obtained near the nematic-isotropic transition, previously reported.

RESUMO

This work demonstrates the occurrence of dn/dT inversion from negative to positive near the nematic-isotropic phase transition in a lyotropic liquid crystal. It is suggested that this effect can be attributed to a sudden increase of the electronic polarizability due to a change in the micelle shape near this phase transition. Formation of a long lasting lenslike element within the sample when it is irradiated at moderately high laser powers is also reported. This permanent lens is erasable by increasing the temperature above the nematic-isotropic transition temperature.
