BACKGROUND: Lung fibrosis is a chronic lung disease with a high mortality rate with only two approved drugs (pirfenidone and nintedanib) to attenuate its progression. To date, there are no reliable biomarkers to assess fibrosis development and/or treatment effects for these two drugs. Osteoprotegerin (OPG) is used as a serum marker to diagnose liver fibrosis and we have previously shown it associates with lung fibrosis as well. METHODS: Here we used murine and human precision-cut lung slices to investigate the regulation of OPG in lung tissue to elucidate whether it tracks with (early) fibrosis development and responds to antifibrotic treatment to assess its potential use as a biomarker. RESULTS: OPG mRNA expression in murine lung slices was higher after treatment with profibrotic cytokines TGFß1 or IL13, and closely correlated with Fn and PAI1 mRNA expression. More OPG protein was released from fibrotic human lung slices than from the control human slices and from TGFß1 and IL13-stimulated murine lung slices compared to control murine slices. This OPG release was inhibited when murine slices were treated with pirfenidone or nintedanib. OPG release from human fibrotic lung slices was inhibited by pirfenidone treatment. CONCLUSION: OPG can already be detected during the early stages of fibrosis development and responds, both in early- and late-stage fibrosis, to treatment with antifibrotic drugs currently on the market for lung fibrosis. Therefore, OPG should be further investigated as a potential biomarker for lung fibrosis and a potential surrogate marker for treatment effect.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a significant global health concern, requiring effective preclinical models for studying its development and testing therapies. Mouse models have been used, including spontaneous tumors, carcinogen exposure, and tumor cell implantation as xenografts or at orthotopic sites. Here, we describe an orthotopic preclinical model of CRC, which provides a valuable tool for studying tumor growth and the tumor microenvironment, offering a more accurate representation of human CRC compared to xenograft models.

Toll-like receptors (TLRs) recognize pathogen- and damage-associated molecular patterns and, in turn, trigger the release of cytokines and other immunostimulatory molecules. As a result, TLR agonists are increasingly being investigated as vaccine adjuvants, though many of these agonists are small molecules that quickly diffuse away from the vaccination site, limiting their co-localization with antigens and, thus, their effect. Here, the small-molecule TLR7 agonist 1V209 is conjugated to a positively-charged multidomain peptide (MDP) hydrogel, K 2 , which was previously shown to act as an adjuvant promoting humoral immunity. Mixing the 1V209-conjugated K 2 50:50 with the unfunctionalized K 2 produces hydrogels that retain the shear-thinning and self-healing physical properties of the original MDP, while improving the solubility of 1V209 more than 200-fold compared to the unconjugated molecule. When co-delivered with ovalbumin as a model antigen, 1V209-functionalized K 2 produces antigen-specific IgG titers that were statistically similar to alum, the gold standard adjuvant, and a significantly lower ratio of Th2-associated IgG1 to Th1-associated IgG2a than alum, suggesting a more balanced Th1 and Th2 response. Together, these results suggest that K 2 MDP hydrogels functionalized with 1V209 are a promising adjuvant for vaccines against infectious diseases, especially those benefiting from a combined Th1 and Th2 immune response. Table of Contents: Activation of toll-like receptors (TLRs) stimulates a signaling cascade to induce an immune response. A TLR7 agonist was conjugated to an injectable peptide hydrogel, which was then used to deliver a model vaccine antigen. This platform produced antibody titers similar to the gold standard adjuvant alum and demonstrated an improved balance between Th1- and Th2-mediated immunity over alum.

Estimating feed efficiency (FE) in dairy sheep is challenging due to the high cost of systems that measure individual feed intake. Identifying proxies that can serve as effective predictors of FE could make it possible to introduce FE into breeding programs. Here, 39 Assaf ewes in first lactation were evaluated regarding their FE by 2 metrics, residual feed intake (RFI) and feed conversion ratio (FCR). The ewes were classified into high, medium and low groups for each metric. Milk samples of the 39 ewes were subjected to untargeted metabolomics analysis. The complete milk metabolomic signature was used to discriminate the FE groups using partial least squares discriminant analysis. A total of 41 and 26 features were selected as the most relevant features for the discrimination of RFI and FCR groups, respectively. The predictive ability when utilizing the complete milk metabolomic signature and the reduced data sets were investigated using 4 machine-learning algorithms and a multivariate regression method. The Orthogonal Partial Least Square algorithm outperformed other ML algorithms for the FCR prediction in the scenarios using the complete milk metabolite signature (r2 = 0.62 ± 0.06) and the 26 selected features (0.62 ± 0.15). Regarding RFI predictions, the scenarios using the 41 selected features outperformed the scenario with the complete milk metabolite signature, where the Multilayer feedforward artificial neural network (r2 = 0.18 ± 0.14) and extreme gradient boosting (r2 = 0.17 ± 0.15) outperformed other algorithms. The functionality of the selected metabolites implied that the metabolism of glucose, galactose, fructose, sphingolipids, amino acids, insulin, and thyroid hormones was at play. Compared with the use of traditional methods, practical applications of these biomarkers might simplify and reduce costs in selecting feed-efficient ewes.

Background: Due to improvement in movement performance, post-activation performance enhancement (PAPE) may open new possibilities to improve gait performance. However, no study has attempted to translate this phenomenon into walking. Therefore, the study aimed to test whether acute stretching followed by a conditioning exercise can improve subsequent gait performance in healthy adults. Research question: Can an exercise protocol subsequently improve gait performance? Methods: Sixteen individuals walked four 10-m trials (in each period) before and after 7 min of an exercise protocol composed of stretching (focusing on the lower limb) and a conditioning exercise (standing calf-raise wearing a vest of 20 kg). Gait spatialtemporal parameters and muscle activity of tibialis anterior and gastrocnemius medialis and lateralis muscles were obtained by a 3D-motion system and wireless electromyography, respectively. Before and after the exercise protocol, kinematic and muscle activity parameters were compared by a one-way ANOVA and the Wilcoxon signed-rank test, respectively. Results: After the exercise protocol, the participants walked with a faster step velocity (p < 0.018) and with a lower step duration (p < 0.025). Also, higher peak muscle activity (p < 0.008) and low-frequency (p < 0.034) activation of the anterior tibial muscle after the exercise protocol were observed. Significance: In conclusion, the protocol improves the stability and the muscles' efficiency during gait, contributing to a new approach to enhancing gait rehabilitation programs.

Autophagy-related genes have been closely associated with intestinal homeostasis. BECLIN1 is a component of Class III phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase complexes that orchestrate autophagy initiation and endocytic trafficking. Here we show intestinal epithelium-specific BECLIN1 deletion in adult mice leads to rapid fatal enteritis with compromised gut barrier integrity, highlighting its intrinsic critical role in gut maintenance. BECLIN1-deficient intestinal epithelial cells exhibit extensive apoptosis, impaired autophagy, and stressed endoplasmic reticulum and mitochondria. Remaining absorptive enterocytes and secretory cells display morphological abnormalities. Deletion of the autophagy regulator, ATG7, fails to elicit similar effects, suggesting additional novel autophagy-independent functions of BECLIN1 distinct from ATG7. Indeed, organoids derived from BECLIN1 KO mice show E-CADHERIN mislocalisation associated with abnormalities in the endocytic trafficking pathway. This provides a mechanism linking endocytic trafficking mediated by BECLIN1 and loss of intestinal barrier integrity. Our findings establish an indispensable role of BECLIN1 in maintaining mammalian intestinal homeostasis and uncover its involvement in endocytic trafficking in this process. Hence, this study has important implications for our understanding of intestinal pathophysiology.

Mycotoxins (MTs), produced by filamentous fungi, represent a severe hazard to the health of humans and food safety, affecting the quality of various agricultural products. They can contaminate a wide range of foods, during any processing phase before or after harvest. Animals and humans who consume MTs-contaminated food or feed may experience acute or chronic poisoning, which may result in serious pathological consequences. Accordingly, developing rapid, easy, and accurate methods of MTs detection in food becomes highly urgent and critical as a quality control and to guarantee food safety and lower health hazards. In this review, we highlighted and discussed innovative approaches like biosensors, fluorescent polarization, capillary electrophoresis, infrared spectroscopy, and electronic noses for MT identification pointing out current challenges and future directions. The limitations, current challenges, and future directions of conventional detection methods versus innovative methods have also been highlighted and discussed.

Social interactions between cows play a fundamental role in the daily activities of dairy cattle. Real-time location systems provide on a continuous and automated basis information about the position of individual cows inside barns, offering a valuable opportunity to monitor dyadic social contacts. Understanding dyadic social interactions could be applied to enhance the stability of the social structure promoting animal welfare and to model disease transmission in dairy cattle. This study aimed to identify the effect of different cow characteristics on the likelihood of the formation and persistence of social contacts in dairy cattle. The individual position of the lactating cows was automatically collected once per second for 2 wk, using an ultra-wideband system on a Swedish commercial farm consisting of almost 200 dairy cows inside a freestall barn. Social networks were constructed using the position data of 149 cows with available information on all characteristics during the study period. Social contacts were considered as a binary variable indicating whether a cow pair was within 2.5 m of each other for at least 10 min per day. The role of cow characteristics in social networks was studied by applying separable temporal exponential random graph models. Our results revealed that cows of the same parity interacted more consistently, as well as those born within 7 d of each other or closely related by pedigree. The repeatability of the topological parameters indicated a consistent short-term stability of the individual animal roles within the social network structure. Additional research is required to elucidate the underlying mechanisms governing the long-term evolution of social contacts among dairy cattle and to investigate the relationship between these networks and the transmission of diseases in the dairy cattle population.

Rationale: Microplastics are a pressing global concern, and inhalation of microplastic fibers has been associated with interstitial and bronchial inflammation in flock workers. However, how microplastic fibers affect the lungs is unknown. Objectives: Our aim was to assess the effects of 12 × 31 µm nylon 6,6 (nylon) and 15 × 52 µm polyethylene terephthalate (polyester) textile microplastic fibers on lung epithelial growth and differentiation. Methods: We used human and murine alveolar and airway-type organoids as well as air-liquid interface cultures derived from primary lung epithelial progenitor cells and incubated these with either nylon or polyester fibers or nylon leachate. In addition, mice received one dose of nylon fibers or nylon leachate, and, 7 days later, organoid-forming capacity of isolated epithelial cells was investigated. Measurements and Main Results: We observed that nylon microfibers, more than polyester, inhibited developing airway organoids and not established ones. This effect was mediated by components leaching from nylon. Epithelial cells isolated from mice exposed to nylon fibers or leachate also formed fewer airway organoids, suggesting long-lasting effects of nylon components on epithelial cells. Part of these effects was recapitulated in human air-liquid interface cultures. Transcriptomic analysis revealed upregulation of Hoxa5 after exposure to nylon fibers. Inhibiting Hoxa5 during nylon exposure restored airway organoid formation, confirming Hoxa5's pivotal role in the effects of nylon. Conclusions: These results suggest that components leaching from nylon 6,6 may especially harm developing airways and/or airways undergoing repair, and we strongly encourage characterization in more detail of both the hazard of and the exposure to microplastic fibers.

Mycotoxins (MTs) are secondary toxic metabolites that can contaminate food, impacting quality and safety, leading to various negative health effects and serious pathological consequences conferring urgent need to evaluate and validate the currently standard methods used in their analysis. Therefore, this study was aimed to validate ELISA and VICAM immunoaffinity fluorometric, the two common methods used to monitor the level of MTs according to the Egyptian Organization for Standardization and Quality Control. A total of 246 food samples were collected and tested for Aflatoxins (196 samples), Ochratoxin A (139), Zearalenone (70), and Deoxynivalenol (100) using both analytical methods. Results showed that aflatoxins exceeded limits in 42.9, 100, and 13.3% of oily seeds, dried fruits, and chili and spices, respectively. For ochratoxin A, 3.9% of Gramineae and 8% of spices and chili (locally sourced) exceeded the limits, while 17.6% of imported pasta and noodles exceeded the limits for deoxynivalenol. Significant differences for the aflatoxins and ochratoxin A detection among different categories of chocolate, dried fruits, and oily seeds (p-value < 0.05). No zearalenone contamination was detected in the exported, imported, and locally sourced categories. No deoxynivalenol contamination was detected in the tested Gramineae category. In contrast, for pasta and noodles, the imported samples exhibited the highest contamination rate (above the upper limit of 750 µg/kg) with 17.6% of the samples testing positive for deoxynivalenol with no significant difference among different sample categories of Gramineae, pasta, and noodles (p-value > 0.05). In conclusion, our study found no significant differences between the ELISA and immunoaffinity fluorometric analysis in the detection of the respective MTs in various food categories and therefore, they can substitute each other whenever necessary. However, significant differences were observed among different food categories, particularly the local and imported ones, highlighting the urgent need for strict and appropriate control measures to minimize the risk of MTs adverse effects.

Poly(glycerol sebacate) (PGS) is a biodegradable, elastomeric polymer that has been explored for applications ranging from tissue engineering to drug delivery and wound repair. Despite its promise, its biomedical utility is limited by its rapid, and largely fixed, degradation rate. Additionally, its preparation requires high temperatures for long periods of time, rendering it incompatible with heat-sensitive molecules, complex device geometries, and high-throughput production. In this study, we synthesized methacrylated PGS (PGS-M), imparting the ability to rapidly photocross-link the polymer. Increasing the degree of methacrylation was found to slow PGS-M degradation; PGS-M (5.5 kDa) disks with 21% methacrylation lost 43% of their mass over 11 weeks in vivo whereas 47% methacrylated disks lost just 14% of their mass over the same period. Increasing the methacrylation also extended the release of encapsulated daunorubicin by up to two orders of magnitude in vitro, releasing drug over months instead of one week. Like PGS, PGS-M exhibited good biocompatibility, eliciting limited inflammation and fibrous encapsulation when implanted subcutaneously. These studies are the first to perform long-term studies demonstrating the ability to tune PGS-M degradation rate, use PGS-M to release drug, demonstrate sustained release of drug from PGS-M, and evaluate PGS-M behavior in vivo. Taken together, these studies show that PGS-M offers several key advantages over PGS for drug delivery and tissue engineering, including rapid curing, facile loading of drugs without exposure to heat, tunable degradation rates, and tunable release kinetics, all while retaining the favorable biocompatibility of PGS.

Intraepithelial lymphocytes (IELs), including αß and γδ T cells (T-IELs), constantly survey and play a critical role in maintaining the gastrointestinal epithelium. We show that cytotoxic molecules important for defense against cancer were highly expressed by T-IELs in the small intestine. In contrast, abundance of colonic T-IELs was dependent on the microbiome and displayed higher expression of TCF-1/TCF7 and a reduced effector and cytotoxic profile, including low expression of granzymes. Targeted deletion of TCF-1 in γδ T-IELs induced a distinct effector profile and reduced colon tumor formation in mice. In addition, TCF-1 expression was significantly reduced in γδ T-IELs present in human colorectal cancers (CRCs) compared with normal healthy colon, which strongly correlated with an enhanced γδ T-IEL effector phenotype and improved patient survival. Our work identifies TCF-1 as a colon-specific T-IEL transcriptional regulator that could inform new immunotherapy strategies to treat CRC.

BACKGROUND: As the prepubertal stage is a crucial point for the proper development of the mammary gland and milk production, this study aims to evaluate how protein restriction at this stage can affect methylation marks in milk somatic cells. Here, 28 Assaf ewes were subjected to 42.3% nutritional protein restriction (14 animals, NPR) or fed standard diets (14 animals, C) during the prepubertal stage. During the second lactation, the milk somatic cells of these ewes were sampled, and the extracted DNA was subjected to whole-genome bisulfite sequencing. RESULTS: A total of 1154 differentially methylated regions (DMRs) were identified between the NPR and C groups. Indeed, the results of functional enrichment analyses of the genes harboring these DMRs suggested their relevant effects on the development of the mammary gland and lipid metabolism in sheep. The additional analysis of the correlations of the mean methylation levels within these DMRs with fat, protein, and dry extract percentages in the milk and milk somatic cell counts suggested associations between several DMRs and milk production traits. However, there were no phenotypic differences in these traits between the NPR and C groups. CONCLUSION: In light of the above, the results obtained in the current study might suggest potential candidate genes for the regulation of milk production traits in the sheep mammary gland. Further studies focusing on elucidating the genetic mechanisms affected by the identified DMRs may help to better understand the biological mechanisms modified in the mammary gland of dairy sheep as a response to nutritional challenges and their potential effects on milk production.

Children in foster care face heightened risk of adverse psychosocial and economic outcomes compared with children in the general population. Yet, the effects of foster care as an intervention are heterogeneous. Heterogeneity outcomes by race and ethnicity are of particular interest, given that Black and Indigenous youth experience foster care at higher rates than other racial/ethnic groups and experience group differences in setting, duration, and exits to permanency. This meta-regression explores racial disparities in education, employment, mental health, and behavioral outcomes during and following foster care. A systematic search of PsycINFO, ERIC, and Academic Search Complete using a series of search terms for studies published between January 2000 and June 2021 found 70 articles and 392 effect sizes that provided outcomes of US-based foster care by race/ethnicity. Findings reveal that Black foster care impacted persons (FCIPs) have 20% lower odds (95% CI: .68-.93) of achieving employment or substantial financial earnings and have 18% lower odds (95% CI: .68-1.00) of mental health concerns compared to White FCIPs. Hispanic FCIPs have 10% lower odds (95% CI: .84-.97) of achieving stable housing compared to non-Hispanic FCIPs. Moderator analyses revealed certain study features (i.e. publication type, timing of the study, location of the study, and placement status of the participants) have a significant impact on the gap between Black and non-Black and Hispanic and non-Hispanic FCIPs. The findings provide important implications for racial disparities in foster care outcomes, as well as highlight important gaps and missing information from published studies.

Adjuvants play a critical role in enhancing vaccine efficacy; however, there is a need to develop new immunomodulatory compounds to address emerging pathogens and to expand the use of immunotherapies. Multidomain peptides (MDPs) are materials composed of canonical amino acids that form injectable supramolecular hydrogels under physiological salt and pH conditions. MDP hydrogels are rapidly infiltrated by immune cells in vivo and have previously been shown to influence cytokine production. Therefore, we hypothesized that these immunostimulatory characteristics would allow MDPs to function as vaccine adjuvants. Herein, we demonstrate that loading antigen into MDP hydrogels does not interfere with their rheological properties and that positively charged MDPs can act as antigen depots, as demonstrated by their ability to release ovalbumin (OVA) over a period of 7-9 days in vivo. Mice vaccinated with MDP-adjuvanted antigen generated significantly higher IgG titers than mice treated with the unadjuvanted control, suggesting that these hydrogels potentiate humoral immunity. Interestingly, MDP hydrogels did not elicit a robust cellular immune response, as indicated by the lower production of IgG2c and smaller populations of tetramer-positive CD8+ T splenocytes compared to mice vaccinated alum-adjuvanted OVA. Together, the data suggest that MDP hydrogel adjuvants strongly bias the immune response towards humoral immunity while evoking a very limited cellular immune response. As a result, MDPs may have the potential to serve as adjuvants for applications that benefit exclusively from humoral immunity.

The present study aimed to ascertain how different strategies for leveraging genomic information enhance the accuracy of estimated breeding values for milk and cheese-making traits and to evaluate the implementation of a low-density (LowD) SNP chip designed explicitly for that aim. Thus, milk samples from a total of 2,020 dairy ewes from 2 breeds (1,039 Spanish Assaf and 981 Churra) were collected and analyzed to determine 3 milk production and composition traits and 2 traits related to milk coagulation properties and cheese yield. The 2 studied populations were genotyped with a customized 50K Affymetrix SNP chip (Affymetrix Inc.) containing 55,627 SNP markers. The prediction accuracies were obtained using different multitrait methodologies, such as the BLUP model based on pedigree information, the genomic BLUP (GBLUP), and the BLUP at the SNP level (SNP-BLUP), which are based on genotypic data, and the single-step GBLUP (ssGBLUP), which combines both sources of information. All of these methods were analyzed by cross-validation, comparing predictions of the whole population with the test population sets. Additionally, we describe the design of a LowD SNP chip (3K) and its prediction accuracies through the different methods mentioned previously. Furthermore, the results obtained using the LowD SNP chip were compared with those based on the 50K SNP chip data sets. Finally, we conclude that implementing genomic selection through the ssGBLUP model in the current breeding programs would increase the accuracy of the estimated breeding values compared with the BLUP methodology in the Assaf (from 0.19 to 0.39) and Churra (from 0.27 to 0.44) dairy sheep populations. The LowD SNP chip is cost-effective and has proven to be an accurate tool for estimating genomic breeding values for milk and cheese-making traits, microsatellite imputation, and parentage verification. The results presented here suggest that the routine use of this LowD SNP chip could potentially increase the genetic gains of the breeding selection programs of the 2 Spanish dairy sheep breeds considered here.

BACKGROUND: Engineering of the Carpentier-Edwards Physio (PR-I) and Physio II (PR-II) rings (Edwards Lifesciences Corp., Irvine, CA, USA) combines flexibility with remodeling. PR-II is considered an improvement of PR-I, as it boasts of an improved shape, a double saddle, and a sewing cuff that reduces tension on sutures. Beyond the superior effect of the PR-II on the annular physiology, it has not been proven to be clinically better than the PR-I. This study compares the long-term clinical outcomes of MV repair for degenerative disease with these rings. METHODS: From 2004 to 2020, MV repair with Physio ring annuloplasty (group PR-I) was performed in 231 patients, and with Physio-II ring annuloplasty (group PR-II) in 255 patients. A propensity score-matching analysis was used to pair 104 in each group. Primary outcome was recurrent MR≥3 and secondary outcomes were long-term survival, cardiac death, and MV-related events (MVREs). The 15-year follow-up data were complete in 97.3% of patients. RESULTS: There were no differences in 15-year freedom from recurrent MR (P=0.721), survival and cardiac death between the matched groups (P=0.693 and P=0.135, respectively). MVREs, including cardiac death, pacemaker implantation, thromboembolism, bleeding, and reoperation were also similar between the matched groups (P=0.603). However, 5-year recurrent MR was significantly higher in PR-I than in PR-II (P=0.010). Multivariate analysis showed Barlow's disease and preoperative MR≥3 as risk factors for late MR recurrence. CONCLUSIONS: Type of annuloplasty rings did not influence long-term clinical outcomes. Better annular dynamics seen in PR-II annuloplasty does not translate into superior freedom from recurrent MR.

COVID-19 in Brazil is threatening, and it has forced the government to adopt partial lockdown as a strategy to stop the spread of the virus in the first wave of pandemic (March 2020). These preventive measures during the COVID-19 pandemic may affect the motor and non-motor symptoms in people with Parkinson's disease (PD) and Multiple sclerosis (MS). Thus, the purpose of this study was to investigate the perception during the first wave of COVID-19 pandemic lockdown on motor and non-motor symptoms, and also measure physical activity level, quality of life, and sleep quality in Brazilian people with PD and MS. One hundred and fifty-three participants (PD-97 and MS-56) answered an online survey to identify the perception of motor and non-motor symptoms, and characterize the physical activity level, and quality of life and sleep in these neurological Brazillian population. During the beginning of pandemic lockdown in Brazil, our results indicated that 69% of people with PD and 55% of people with MS reported worse on motor aspects and lower amount of physical activity performed. Also, 75.2% (PD) and 92.9% (MS) of our cohort were considered inactive or sedentary. Based on the perception and behavior of the population studied, people with PD and MS should be encouraged to perform more physical activity in order to reduce the effects of isolation in motor and non-motor aspects of the diseases. Teleinterventions, such as home-based exercise, should be included in the new routine of people with PD and MS to reduce the impacts of lockdown and to maintain quality of life at a good level.

BACKGROUND: Certain aspects of gait may depend on cognition, and the effects of dual-tasking (DT) on gait asymmetry (GA) during obstacle circumvention in people with Parkinson's disease (pwPD) may be walking phase-dependent. While the approaching phase requires allocating significant cognitive resources to perform the task, outweighing the available resources may increase GA. During the avoiding phase, the obstacle could be used as an external cue, enhancing the attention to the obstacle and, consequently, improving gait control and regulating GA. OBJECTIVE: The study investigated the effects of obstacle circumvention during gait with DT on GA in pwPD, considering the circumvention phase. METHODS: Thirty participants, 15 pwPD and 15 neurologically healthy individuals, circumvented an obstacle 20 times (in total) according to side (right and left side) and DT (presence and absence). Spatial-temporal stride parameters, medial-lateral and horizontal trajectory deviations from the original path, strategy to obstacle circumvention (lead limb away from or close to the obstacle during the crossing step), and gaze parameters were calculated during the approaching and avoiding phases. The parameters were grouped considering the side that the obstacle was circumvented during each task, and the symmetry index was calculated. RESULTS: The results showed greater asymmetry of time of fixations, width, duration, and velocity during the approaching phase (p < 0.02), whereas the avoiding phase decreased asymmetry of medial-lateral and horizontal trajectory deviations parameters (p < 0.001) during obstacle circumvention with DT, in both pwPD and control group. CONCLUSIONS: The findings offer a basis for considering that goal-directed movement control may regulate GA in pwPD.

Primates are affected by fluctuations in ambient temperatures, mostly through thermoregulatory costs and changes in the availability of food. In the present study, we investigate whether the ambient temperature and proxies of food availability affect the activity period of marmosets (Callithrix spp.). We predicted that: (i) at colder sites, marmosets would spend more time at sleeping sites; (ii) midday resting bouts would be longer at hotter sites; (iii) the onset/cessation of activity and resting behavior at midday would be more closely related to temperature than food availability, and (iv) highly exudativorous groups would have higher total levels of resting. We compiled data on the onset and cessation of activity and the time spent resting at midday from seven marmoset studies from sites with a wide range of temperatures. We used generalized linear mixed models to verify the relationship between the dependent variables (lag between dawn and the onset of activities, lag between cessation of activities and dusk, and proportion of resting during midday) and the minimum and maximum temperatures at the respective study sites, together with proxies of food availability (exudativory rates, the amount of habitat available per individual, and net primary productivity) using each sample month as a sampling unit and the identity of the study as a categorical random factor. At colder sites and during colder months, the marmosets left sleeping trees later in the morning and ceased their activities earlier, while at hotter sites and during hotter months, they spent more time resting during midday. More exudativorous groups become active later in the morning, but also ceased their activities later. The abundance of food did not affect the timing of activities. We provide evidence that both low and high temperatures affect marmosets' activities, and that their activity period appears to be more influenced by the thermal environment than food availability.
