RESUMO

Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is a frequently occurring condition and approximately 90% of TBI cases are classified as mild (mTBI). However, conventional MRI has limited diagnostic and prognostic value, thus warranting the utilization of additional imaging modalities and analysis procedures. The functional connectomic approach using resting-state functional MRI (rs-fMRI) has shown great potential and promising diagnostic capabilities across multiple clinical scenarios, including mTBI. Additionally, there is increasing recognition of a fundamental role of brain dynamics in healthy and pathological cognition. Here, we undertake an in-depth investigation of mTBI-related connectomic disturbances and their emotional and cognitive correlates. We leveraged machine learning and graph theory to combine static and dynamic functional connectivity (FC) with regional entropy values, achieving classification accuracy up to 75% (77, 74 and 76% precision, sensitivity and specificity, respectively). As compared to healthy controls, the mTBI group displayed hypoconnectivity in the temporal poles, which correlated positively with semantic (r = 0.43, p < 0.008) and phonemic verbal fluency (r = 0.46, p < 0.004), while hypoconnectivity in the right dorsal posterior cingulate correlated positively with depression symptom severity (r = 0.54, p < 0.0006). These results highlight the importance of residual FC in these regions for preserved cognitive and emotional function in mTBI. Conversely, hyperconnectivity was observed in the right precentral and supramarginal gyri, which correlated negatively with semantic verbal fluency (r=-0.47, p < 0.003), indicating a potential ineffective compensatory mechanism. These novel results are promising toward understanding the pathophysiology of mTBI and explaining some of its most lingering emotional and cognitive symptoms.

This study investigated the role of dual-energy computed tomography (CT) for lesion characterization in patients with peripheral arterial disease manifesting with chronic total occlusions (CTOs). Forty-one symptomatic patients with CTOs underwent dual-energy CT angiography before endovascular treatment. The lesions were subsequently analyzed in a dedicated workstation, and 2 indexes-dual-energy index (DEI) and effective Z (Zeff)-were calculated, ranging from 0.0027 to 0.321 and from 6.89 to 13.02, respectively. Statistical analysis showed a significant correlation between the DEI and Zeff values (P < .001). The interobserver intraclass correlation coefficient was 0.91 for the mean Zeff values and 0.86 for the mean DEI values. This technique could potentially provide useful information regarding the composition of a CTO.

Lower limb peripheral arterial disease (PAD) characterizes the impairment of blood flow to extremities caused by arterial stenoses or occlusions. Evaluation of PAD is based on clinical examination, calculation of ankle-brachial index and imaging studies such as ultrasound, CT, MRI and digital subtraction angiography. These modalities provide significant information about location, extension and severity of macrovasular lesions in lower extremity arterial system. However, they can be also used to evaluate limb perfusion, using appropriate techniques and protocols. This information may be valuable for assessment of the severity of ischemia and detection of hypoperfused areas. Moreover, they can be used for planning of revascularization strategy in patients with severe PAD and evaluation of therapeutic outcome. These techniques may also determine prognosis and amputation risk in patients with PAD. This review gives a basic overview of the perfusion techniques for lower limbs provided by imaging modalities such as ultrasound, CT, MRI, digital subtraction angiography and scintigraphy and their clinical applications for evaluation of PAD and revascularization outcome.

BACKGROUND: The electromagnetic spectrum spans over an enormous range from 0 up to more than 1020 Hz in the deep ionizing region, significant exposures exist in specific occupational environments. Between the ionizing and the electromagnetic fields (EMF) part of the spectrum, the 'optical radiation' (OR) region has specific properties. Comparative and concise evaluation enables action prioritization. METHODS: Following the transposition and implementation periods of the artificial optical radiation (AOR) and EMF European Directives, the Hellenic Ministry of Labour in collaboration with the Greek Atomic Energy Commission (EEAE) and the National Technical University of Athens, conducted thorough occupational exposure investigation in Greece. Using dedicated measuring equipment and procedures, the majority of EMF emitting installations in Greece and also AOR emitting installations including arc welding, lasers and PC monitors has been assessed. RESULTS: Measurement results from occupational settings reveal that it is the non-coherent metal arc welding AOR that can pose even sub-second overexposures. Rare EMF overexposures are manageable and EMF concern is not justified. Maintenance procedures demand proper attention. Preliminary laser safety assessment reveals OHS gaps and potential eye and skin hazards. Blue light exposure from computer monitors is well below safety limits. CONCLUSIONS: This electromagnetic spectrum risk assessment conducted in Greece enables the justification of the real occupational hazards, in this sense: i) EMF exposure assessment has to be concentrated to maintenance procedures; ii) AOR measuring setups are challenging and standardized measurement procedures are missing, and iii) AOR overexposures from arc welding pose significant eye and skin hazards.

The aim of this study is to investigate the possibility of predicting histological grade in patients with endometrial cancer on the basis of intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM)-related histogram analysis parameters. This prospective study included 52 women with endometrial cancer (EC) who underwent MR imaging as initial staging in our hospital, allocated into low-grade (G1 and G2) and high-grade (G3) tumors according to the pathology reports. Regions of interest (ROIs) were drawn on the diffusion weighted images and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC), true diffusivity (D), and perfusion fraction (f) using diffusion models were computed. Mean, median, skewness, kurtosis, and interquartile range (IQR) were calculated from the whole-tumor histogram. The IQR of the diffusion coefficient (D) was significantly lower in the low-grade tumors from that of the high-grade group with an adjusted p-value of less than 5% (0.048). The ROC curve analysis results of the statistically significant IQR of the D yielded an accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity of 74.5%, 70.1%, and 76.5% respectively, for discriminating low from high-grade tumors, with an optimal cutoff of 0.206 (×10-3 mm2/s) and an AUC of 75.4% (95% CI: 62.1 to 88.8). The IVIM modeling coupled with histogram analysis techniques is promising for preoperative differentiation between low- and high-grade EC tumors.

Microvascular wall abnormalities demonstrated by nailfold capillaroscopy in systemic sclerosis (SSc) may result in microhemorrhagic deposition of erythrocyte-derived iron. Such abnormalities precede fibrosis, which is orchestrated by myofibroblasts. Iron induces endothelial-to-mesenchymal transition in vitro, which is reversed by reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavengers. The conversion of quiescent fibroblasts into profibrotic myofibroblasts has also been associated with ROS-mediated activation of TGF-ß1. Given that iron overload predisposes to ROS formation, we hypothesized that the uptake of erythrocyte-derived iron by resident cells promotes fibrosis. Firstly, we show that iron induces oxidative stress in skin-derived and synovial fibroblasts in vitro, as well as in blood mononuclear cells ex vivo. The biological relevance of increased oxidative stress was confirmed by showing the concomitant induction of DNA damage in these cell types. Similar results were obtained in vivo, following intravenous iron administration. Secondly, using magnetic resonance imaging we show an increased iron deposition in the fingers of a patient with early SSc and nailfold microhemorrhages. While a systematic magnetic resonance study to examine tissue iron levels in SSc, including internal organs, is underway, herein we propose that iron may be a pathogenetic link between microvasculopathy and fibrosis and an additional mechanism responsible for increased oxidative stress in SSc.

PURPOSE: To investigate the value of dual-energy CT imaging to discriminate low- from high- risk type II endoleaks (T2EL) after endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR). METHOD: Study participants were consecutive patients referred for CT at 1-month post-EVAR. CT imaging acquisition included a dual-energy CT angiography (DECTA) and a delayed single-energy CT (SECT) imaging. Patients diagnosed with T2EL were re-examined at 6-months post-EVAR to assess the aneurysm sac growth (ASG). Upon ASG recorded, patients were categorized as having low- (group A) or high- risk (group B) T2EL. DECTA image data were employed to calculate the normalized effective atomic number (NZeff), the normalized iodine concentration, the slope of HUendoleak/HUaorta against monochromatic energy, the dual-energy index and an improvised endoleak index (EI) for each T2EL. Statistical analysis was employed to compare all above parameters regarding their ability to differentiate low- from high- risk T2EL. RESULTS: Among 40 patients examined at 1-month post-EVAR, 14 patients were diagnosed with T2EL. NZeff and EI were found to be significantly lower in group A. NZeff was found to have the highest power to discriminate high-risk T2EL with an area-under-curve of 86.7%, showing100% specificity and 60% sensitivity. The optimal contrast-to-noise ratio for T2EL demonstrated a median peak conspicuity level at 54-keV. The mean effective dose from DECTA and SECT scans was 27.8% lower compared to the sum of three SECT acquisitions. CONCLUSIONS: NZeff and EI were found to have a significant power in predicting the aggressiveness of T2EL lesions. Virtual monochromatic images at 54-keV may enhance T2EL detection efficiency.

BACKGROUND: In this study we evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of extraocular muscle volumetry in detecting thyroid eye disease and to compare the results with simple measurements of maximal medial rectus (MR) diameter. METHODS: Cross-sectional study that included 47 eyes of 47 patients with thyroid eye disease and 47 healthy controls. Patients underwent slitlamp examination and imaging consisting of computed tomography scans. Image segmentation and volume measurements were performed by 2 independent researchers. Intraobserver and interobserver reliability testing was also conducted. RESULTS: Total extraocular muscle volume was 7.31 ± 1.88 cm3 and medial volume was 2.38 ± 0.73 cm3 in the study group. In this group, the maximum measured diameter of the MR was 6.67 ± 0.35 mm. MR volume was statistically associated with maximum MR diameter (r = 9.78; P < 0.001). Both MR volume and maximum MR diameter measurements showed good predictive efficacy as shown using receiver operator characteristic curve analysis. CONCLUSIONS: Complications of thyroid eye disease are often sight threatening, and timely diagnosis is crucial for the management of the entity and its sequelae. The results of this study imply that simple measurements of maximum MR diameter are sensitive enough to establish diagnosis.

OBJECTIVE: To propose a new method of simulating the BOLD contrast using a dynamic, easy to construct and operate, low-cost physical phantom. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A structure of thin pipelines passing through a gel volume was used to simulate blood vessels in human tissue. Quantitative T2*, R2* measurements were used to study the signal change of the phantom. BOLD fMRI experiments and analysis were performed to evaluate its potential use as an fMRI simulator. RESULTS: Experimental T2*, R2* measurements showed similar behavior with published references. BOLD contrast was successfully achieved with the proposed method. In addition, there were several proposed parameters, like the angle of the phantom relative to B0, which can easily adjust the signal change and the activation area. Coefficients of variation showed good reproducibility within a month period. Statistical t maps were produced with in-house software for the BOLD measurements. DISCUSSION: T2*maps and BOLD images confirm the potential use of this phantom as an fMRI simulator and also as a tool for studying sensitivity and specificity of BOLD sequences/algorithms.

BACKGROUND: Persistent type 2 endoleaks (T2EL) require lifelong surveillance to avoid potentially life-threatening complications. PURPOSE: To evaluate the performance of radiomic features (RF) derived from computed tomography angiography (CTA), for differentiating aggressive from benign T2ELs after endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR). MATERIAL AND METHODS: A prospective study was performed on patients who underwent EVAR from January 2018 to January 2020. Analysis was performed in patients who were diagnosed with T2EL based on the CTA of the first postoperative month and were followed at six months and one year. Patients were divided into two groups according to the change of aneurysm sac dimensions. Segmentation of T2ELs was performed and RF were extracted. Feature selection for subsequent machine-learning analysis was evaluated by means of artificial intelligence. Two support vector machines (SVM) classifiers were developed to predict the aneurysm sac dimension changes at one year, utilizing RF from T2EL at one- and six-month CTA scans, respectively. RESULTS: Among the 944 initial RF of T2EL, 58 and 51 robust RF from the one- and six-month CTA scans, respectively, were used for the machine-learning model development. The SVM classifier trained on one-month signatures was able to predict sac expansion at one year with an area under curve (AUC) of 89.3%, presenting 78.6% specificity and 100% sensitivity. Similarly, the SVM classifier developed with six-month radiomics data showed an AUC of 95.5%, specificity of 90.9%, and sensitivity of 100%. CONCLUSION: Machine-learning algorithms utilizing CTA-derived RF may predict aggressive T2ELs leading to aneurysm sac expansion after EVAR.

In order to inform the debate whether cortical areas related to action observation provide a pragmatic or a semantic representation of goal-directed actions, we performed 2 functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) experiments in humans. The first experiment, involving observation of aimless arm movements, resulted in activation of most of the components known to support action execution and action observation. Given the absence of a target/goal in this experiment and the activation of parieto-premotor cortical areas, which were associated in the past with direction, amplitude, and velocity of movement of biological effectors, our findings suggest that during action observation we could be monitoring movement kinematics. With the second, double dissociation fMRI experiment, we revealed the components of the observation-related cortical network affected by 1) actions that have the same target/goal but different reaching and grasping kinematics and 2) actions that have very similar kinematics but different targets/goals. We found that certain areas related to action observation, including the mirror neuron ones, are informed about movement kinematics and/or target identity, hence providing a pragmatic rather than a semantic representation of goal-directed actions. Overall, our findings support a process-driven simulation-like mechanism of action understanding, in agreement with the theory of motor cognition, and question motor theories of action concept processing.

General Linear Modeling (GLM) is the most commonly used method for signal detection in Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) experiments, despite its main limitation of not taking into consideration common spatial dependencies between voxels. Multivariate analysis methods, such as Generalized Canonical Correlation Analysis (gCCA), have been increasingly employed in fMRI data analysis, due to their ability to overcome this limitation. This study, evaluates the improvement of sensitivity of the GLM, by applying gCCA to fMRI data after standard preprocessing steps. Data from a block-design fMRI experiment was used, where 25 healthy volunteers completed two action observation tasks at 1.5T. Whole brain analysis results indicated that the application of gCCA resulted in significantly higher intensity of activation in several regions in both tasks and helped reveal activation in the primary somatosensory and ventral premotor area, theoretically known to become engaged during action observation. In subject-level ROI analyses, gCCA improved the signal to noise ratio in the averaged timeseries in each preselected ROI, and resulted in increased extent of activation, although peak intensity was considerably higher in just two of them. In conclusion, gCCA is a promising method for improving the sensitivity of conventional statistical modeling in task related fMRI experiments.

The purpose of this study was to compare the measurement of several anatomical features of the medial patellofemoral ligament (MPFL) between magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and by direct fashion during dissection. We hypothesized that the measurements between these two techniques would agree. MRI of 30 fresh-frozen cadaveric knees was followed by dissection. MPFL patella and femoral attachment were evaluated; their shape, length, and width were measured; and measurements were compared. MRI was deemed unreliable for the determination of several of the aforementioned anatomical features. Important findings include: (a) observations on MPFL attachment at medial patella side and attachment to quadriceps were identical between dissection and MRI; (b) average width at patella insertion was significantly different between the two methods (p = 0.002); and (c) an attachment to the quadriceps tendon was present in 20/30 specimens and d. detailed measurements of a thin, non-linear, and three-dimensional structure, such as the MPFL, cannot be performed on MRI, due to technical difficulties. This anatomical radiological study highlights the shape, anatomical measurements (length and width), and attachment of the MPFL using a relatively large cadaveric sample and suggests that MRI is not reliable for detailed imaging of its three-dimensional anatomy.

Computer-aided diagnosis systems aim to assist clinicians in the early identification of abnormal signs in order to optimize the interpretation of medical images and increase diagnostic precision. Multiple sclerosis (MS) and clinically isolated syndrome (CIS) are chronic inflammatory, demyelinating diseases affecting the central nervous system. Recent advances in deep learning (DL) techniques have led to novel computational paradigms in MS and CIS imaging designed for automatic segmentation and detection of areas of interest and automatic classification of anatomic structures, as well as optimization of neuroimaging protocols. To this end, there are several publications presenting artificial intelligence-based predictive models aiming to increase diagnostic accuracy and to facilitate optimal clinical management in patients diagnosed with MS and/or CIS. The current study presents a thorough review covering DL techniques that have been applied in MS and CIS during recent years, shedding light on their current advances and limitations.

Blood Oxygen Level Dependent (BOLD) is a commonly-used MR imaging technique in studying brain function. The BOLD signal can be strongly affected by specific sequence parameters, especially in small field strengths. Previous small-scale studies have investigated the effect of TE on BOLD contrast. This study evaluates the dependence of fMRI results on echo time (TE) during concurrent activation of the visual and motor cortex at 1.5 T in a larger sample of 21 healthy volunteers. The experiment was repeated using two different TE values (50 and 70 ms) in counterbalanced order. Furthermore, T2* measurements of the gray matter were performed. Results indicated that both peak beta value and number of voxels were significantly higher using TE = 70 than TE = 50 ms in primary motor, primary somatosensory and supplementary motor cortices (p < 0.007). In addition, the amplitude of activation in visual cortices and the dorsal premotor area was also higher using TE = 70 ms (p < 0.001). Gray matter T2* of the corresponding areas did not vary significantly. In conclusion, the optimal TE value (among the two studied) for visual and motor activity is 70 ms affecting both the amplitude and extent of regional hemodynamic activation.

OBJECTIVES: To emerge hypoperfusion of lower limbs in patients with critical limb ischemia (CLI) using Intravoxel Incoherent Motion microperfusion magnetic resonance imaging (IVIM-MRI). Moreover to examine the ability of IVIM-MRI to differentiate patients with severe peripheral arterial disease (PAD) from normal subjects and evaluate the percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA) results in patients with CLI. METHODS: Eight patients who presented with CLI and six healthy volunteers were examined. The patients underwent IVIM-MRI of lower extremity before and following PTA. The imaging protocol included sagittal diffusion-weighted (DW) sequences. DW images were analyzed and color parametric maps of the micro-circulation of blood inside the capillary network (D*) were constructed. The studies were evaluated by two observers to define interobserver reproducibility. RESULTS: Technical success was achieved in all patients (8/8). The mean ankle-brachial index increased from 0.35 ± 0.2 to 0.76 ± 0.25 (p < 0.05). Successful revascularization improved IVIM microperfusion. Mean D* increased from 279.88 ± 13.47 10-5 mm2/s to 331.51 ± 31 10-5 mm2/s, following PTA, p < 0.05. Moreover, PAD patients presented lower D* values as compared to healthy individuals (279.88 ± 13.47 10-5 mm2/s vs 332.47 ± 22.95 10-5 mm2/s, p < 0.05, respectively). Good interobserver agreement was obtained with an ICC = 0.84 (95% CI 0.64-0.93). CONCLUSIONS: IVIM-MRI can detect differences in microperfusion between patients with PAD and healthy individuals. Moreover, significant restitution of IVIM microperfusion is found following successful PTA. ADVANCES IN KNOWLEDGE: IVIM-MRI is a safe, reproducible and effective modality for evaluation of lower limb hypoperfusion in patients with PAD. It seems also to be a helpful tool to detect changes of tissue perfusion in patients with CLI following revascularization.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive disturbances occur in patients with Relapsing Remitting Multiple Sclerosis (RR-MS) and Clinically Isolated Syndrome (CIS). The Multi-Echo-Spin-Echo (MESE) T2-weighted sequence quantifies demyelination, the pathological hallmark of MS, but has not been used for the documentation of the potential relationship between anatomically specific demyelinating changes and cognitive impairment in MS. PURPOSE: To identify markers of regional demyelination in patients with RR-MS and CIS in relation to clinical variables and severity of cognitive impairment. METHODS AND MATERIALS: 37 RR-MS patients, 39 CIS patients and 52 healthy controls (HC) were examined using the MESE sequence. Long T2 and myelin water fraction (MWF) values were measured, serving as indices of intra/extracellular water content and myelin content, respectively, in focal white matter lesions and 12 normal appearing white matter (NAWM) areas of the patients and HC. A comprehensive neuropsychological assessment was administered to all patients. RESULTS: RR-MS patients showed widespread long T2 increases and MWF reductions in NAWM, compared to the respective values of HC (p < 0.001), which correlated with total lesion volume. Among RR-MS patients illness duration correlated negatively with MWF in right hemisphere frontal and periventricular NAWM areas (and positively with corresponding long T2 values). MWF values were lower in the CIS, as compared to the HC group, in the temporal, frontal and periventricular NAWM areas. Focal demyelinating lesions displayed variable higher T2 and lower MWF values, compared to NAWM, closely corresponding to their intensity on T1 sequences. Reduced MWF values and increased long T2 values in right periventricular NAWM were significantly associated with poor visuomotor performance. CONCLUSION: The MESE sequence affords accurate estimation of myelin and water content in NAWM and focal lesions in RR-MS and CIS patients, by means of the MWF and long T2 values, respectively, providing a sensitive index of demyelination associated with visuomotor deficits.

BACKGROUND: Although diffusely abnormal white matter (DAWM) is commonly seen in multiple sclerosis (MS), it is rarely considered in clinical/imaging studies. PURPOSE: To evaluate quantitative markers of microstructural changes in DAWM of patients with clinically isolated syndrome (CIS) and relapsing-remitting MS (RR-MS) in relation to MS lesions and degree of neurocognitive impairment, by using a multi-echo spin echo (MESE) Proton Density PD-to-T2 sequence. STUDY TYPE: Prospective, cross-sectional. POPULATION: Thirty-seven RR-MS patients, 33 CIS patients, and 52 healthy controls. FIELD STRENGTH/SEQUENCE: 1.5 T/T1-, T2-weighted, fluid-attenuated inversion recovery, and MESE sequences. ASSESSMENT: Long T2, short T2, and myelin water fraction (MWF) values were estimated as indices of intra/extracellular water content and myelin content, respectively, in DAWM, posterior periventricular normal appearing white matter (NAWM), and focal MS lesions, classified according to their signal intensity on T1 sequences. Patients were, also, administered a battery of neuropsychological tests. STATISTICAL TESTS: Comparisons of T2 and MWF values in DAWM, NAWM, and MS lesions were examined, using two-way mixed analyses of variance. Associations of Grooved Pegboard performance with T2 and MWF values in DAWM and NAWM were assessed using Pearson correlation coefficients. RESULTS: T2 and MWF values of DAWM were intermediate between the respective values of NAWM and T1 hypointense focal lesions, while there was no difference between the respective values of DAWM and T1-isointense lesions. T2 values in DAWM were strongly associated with visuomotor performance in CIS patients. DATA CONCLUSION: Intra/extracellular water and myelin water content of DAWM are similar to those of T1-isointense lesions and predict visuomotor performance in CIS patients. Purpose: To assess age-related changes in intrinsic functional brain connectivity and hemodynamics during adulthood in the context of the retrogenesis hypothesis, which states that the rate of age-related changes is higher in late-myelinating (prefrontal, lateral-posterior temporal) cerebrocortical areas as compared to early myelinating (parietal, occipital) regions. In addition, to examine the dependence of age-related changes upon concurrent subclinical depression symptoms which are common even in healthy aging. Methods: Sixty-four healthy adults (28 men) aged 23-79 years (mean 45.0, SD = 18.8 years) were examined. Resting-state functional MRI (rs-fMRI) time series were used to compute voxel-wise intrinsic connectivity contrast (ICC) maps reflecting the strength of functional connectivity between each voxel and the rest of the brain. We further used Time Shift Analysis (TSA) to estimate voxel-wise hemodynamic lead or lag for each of 22 ROIs from the automated anatomical atlas (AAL). Results: Adjusted for depression symptoms, gender and education level, reduced ICC with age was found primarily in frontal, temporal regions, and putamen, whereas the opposite trend was noted in inferior occipital cortices (p < 0.002). With the same covariates, increased hemodynamic lead with advancing age was found in superior frontal cortex and thalamus, with the opposite trend in inferior occipital cortex (p < 0.002). There was also evidence of reduced coupling between voxel-wise intrinsic connectivity and hemodynamics in the inferior parietal cortex. Conclusion: Age-related intrinsic connectivity reductions and hemodynamic changes were demonstrated in several regions-most of them part of DMN and salience networks-while impaired neurovascular coupling was, also, found in parietal regions. Age-related reductions in intrinsic connectivity were greater in anterior as compared to posterior cortices, in line with implications derived from the retrogenesis hypothesis. These effects were affected by self-reported depression symptoms, which also increased with age.

PURPOSE: To investigate and histopathologically validate the role of model selection in the design of novel parametric meta-maps towards the discrimination of low from high-grade soft tissue sarcomas (STSs) using multiple Diffusion Weighted Imaging (DWI) models. METHODS: DWI data of 28 patients were quantified using the mono-exponential, bi-exponential, stretched-exponential and the diffusion kurtosis model. Akaike Weights (AW) were calculated from the corrected Akaike Information Criteria (AICc) to select the most suitable model for every pixel within the tumor volume. Pseudo-colorized classification maps were then generated to depict model suitability, hypothesizing that every single model underpins different tissue properties and cannot solely characterize the whole tumor. Single model parametric maps were turned into meta-maps using the classification map and a histological validation of the model suitability results was conducted on several subregions of different tumors. Several histogram metrics were calculated from all derived maps before and after model selection, statistical analysis was conducted using the Mann-Whitney U test, p-values were adjusted for multiple comparisons and performance of all statistically significant metrics was evaluated using the Receiver Operator Characteristic (ROC) analysis. RESULTS: The histologic analysis on several tumor subregions confirmed model suitability results on these areas. Only 3 histogram metrics, all derived from the meta-maps, were found to be statistically significant in differentiating low from high-grade STSs with an AUC higher than 89 %. CONCLUSION: Embedding model selection in the design of the diffusion parametric maps yields to histogram metrics of high discriminatory power in grading STSs.
