Extreme weather events, like marine heatwaves (MHWs), are becoming more frequent and severe due to climate change, posing several challenges to marine ecosystems and their services. As disease outbreaks are often prompted by these acute phenomena, it is essential to develop eco-innovative strategies that can efficiently improve farmed fish resilience, especially under sub-optimal rearing conditions, thereby ensuring a sustainable aquaculture production. This study aimed to unveil farmed juvenile white seabream (Diplodus sargus, 28.50 ± 1.10 g weight, n = 150) immune and antioxidant responses under a category II MHW in the Mediterranean Sea (+4 °C, 8 days of temperature increase plus 15 days of plateau at the peak temperature) and to investigate whether a 30 days period of prophylactic biofortification with Asparagopsis taxiformis (1.5 %, 3 % and 6 %) enhanced fish resilience to these extreme events. Several biomarkers from different organization levels (individual, cellular, biochemical and molecular) were assessed upon 30 days of biofortification (T30), exposure (after 8 days of temperature increase + 15 days at peak temperature, T53) and recovery (8 days of temperature decrease, T61) from the MHW. Results showed that MHW negatively affected the fish physiological status and overall well-being, decreasing specific growth rate (SGR) and haematocrit (Ht) and increasing erythrocyte nuclear abnormalities (ENAs) and lipid peroxidation (LPO). These adverse effects were alleviated through biofortification with A. taxiformis. Seaweed inclusion at 1.5 % was the most effective dose to minimize the severity of MHW effects, significantly improving immune responses of D. sargus (i.e. increased levels of immunoglobulin M, peroxidase activity and lysozyme expression) and modulating antioxidant responses (i.e. decreased LPO, catalase and glutathione S-transferase activity). These findings confirm that A. taxiformis is a functional ingredient of added value to the aquaculture industry, as its inclusion in marine fish diets can beneficially modulate fish immunity and resilience under optimal and adverse rearing conditions.

Mixed Reality is a technology that has gained attention due to its unique capabilities for accessing and visualizing information. When integrated with voice control mechanisms, gestures and even iris movement, it becomes a valuable tool for medicine. These features are particularly appealing for the operating room and surgical learning, where access to information and freedom of hand operation are fundamental. This study examines the most significant research on mixed reality in the operating room over the past five years, to identify the trends, use cases, its applications and limitations. A systematic review was conducted following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines to answer the research questions established using the PICO (Population, Intervention, Comparator and Outcome) framework. Although implementation of Mixed Reality applications in the operations room presents some challenges, when used appropriately, it can yield remarkable results. It can make learning easier, flatten the learning curve for several procedures, and facilitate various aspects of the surgical processes. The articles' conclusions highlight the potential benefits of these innovations in surgical practice while acknowledging the challenges that must be addressed. Technical complexity, equipment costs, and steep learning curves present significant obstacles to the widespread adoption of Mixed Reality and computer-assisted evaluation. The need for more flexible approaches and comprehensive studies is underscored by the specificity of procedures and limited samples sizes. The integration of imaging modalities and innovative functionalities holds promise for clinical applications. However, it is important to consider issues related to usability, bias, and statistical analyses. Mixed Reality offers significant benefits, but there are still open challenges such as ergonomic issues, limited field of view, and battery autonomy that must be addressed to ensure widespread acceptance.

Rehabilitation involves all types of patients, including people with schizophrenia. Schizophrenia is considered a complex syndrome characterized in general by fundamental and characteristic distortions of thinking and perception. The quality of life of a person with schizophrenia can be compromised by difficulty in carrying out their daily tasks and by the social stigma of their condition. The importance of training and sensitizing students in rehabilitation areas to this type of problem to improve the rehabilitation processes in which they will participate as future professionals involves empathy and the ability to communicate with these populations. It is possible through virtual reality to create immersive environments to simulate some psychotic symptoms characteristic of people with schizophrenia, such as visual hallucinations and hearing voices. The aim of this study was to test the effect of exposure to experiences characteristic of schizophrenia through two different types of immersive environments, graphical computational virtual reality and 360° video, on students from areas of social rehabilitation regarding empathy, social distance, and attitudes towards people with schizophrenia. Although the results were positive for the three parameters under study, no significant differences were found for each of them between the environments to which the participants were exposed. This study concluded that the choice between the two types of immersive environments should be based on the project's objectives, the target audience's needs, and available resources, rather than the type of environment itself, as their impact was similar.

Fish by-products can be converted into high-value-added products like fish protein hydrolysates (FPHs), which have high nutritional value and are rich in bioactive peptides with health benefits. This study aims to characterise FPHs derived from salmon heads (HPSs) and Cape hake trimmings (HPHs) using Alcalase for enzymatic hydrolysis and Subcritical Water Hydrolysis (SWH) as an alternative method. All hydrolysates demonstrated high protein content (70.4-88.7%), with the degree of hydrolysis (DH) ranging from 10.7 to 36.4%. The peptide profile of FPHs indicated the breakdown of proteins into small peptides. HPSs showed higher levels of glycine and proline, while HPHs had higher concentrations of glutamic acid, leucine, threonine, and phenylalanine. Similar elemental profiles were observed in both HPHs and HPSs, and the levels of Cd, Pb, and Hg were well below the legislated limits. Hydrolysates do not have a negative effect on cell metabolism and contribute to cell growth. HPSs and HPHs exhibited high 2,2'-azino-bis(3 ethylbenzthiazoline-6)-sulfonic acid (ABTS) radical scavenging activity, Cu2+ and Fe2+ chelating activities, and angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitory activity, with HPHs generally displaying higher activities. The α-amylase inhibition of both FPHs was relatively low. These results indicate that HPHs are a promising natural source of nutritional compounds and bioactive peptides, making them potential candidates for use as an ingredient in new food products or nutraceuticals. SWH at 250 °C is a viable alternative to enzymatic methods for producing FPHs from salmon heads with high antioxidant and chelating properties.

Microplastics (MPLs) are contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) ubiquitous in aquatic environments, which can be bioaccumulated along the food chain. In this study, the accumulation of polyethylene (PE), polystyrene (PS) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) microplastics (MPLs) of sizes below 63 µm was assessed in Mediterranean mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis spp). Moreover, the potential of mussels to uptake and bioaccumulate other organic contaminants, such as triclosan (TCS) and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), was evaluated with and without the presence of MPLs. Then, the modulation of MPLs in the human bioaccessibility of co-contaminants was assessed by in vitro assays that simulated the human digestion process. Exposure experiments were carried out in 15 L marine microcosms. The bioaccumulation and bioaccessibility of PE, PS, PET, and co-contaminants were assessed by means of liquid chromatography -size exclusion chromatography-coupled to high-resolution mass spectrometry (LC(SEC)-HRMS). Our outcomes confirm that MPL bioaccumulation in filter-feeding organisms is a function of MPL chemical composition and particle sizes. Finally, despite the lower accumulation and bioaccumulation of PFASs in the presence of MPLs, the bioaccessibility assays revealed that PFASs bioaccessibility was favoured in the presence of MPLs. Since part of the bioaccumulated PFASs are adsorbed onto MPL surfaces by hydrophobic and electrostatic interactions, these interactions easily change with the pH during digestion, and the PFASs bioaccessibility increases.

Objective: Evaluate safety and effectiveness of thermal radiofrequency in the musculocutaneous nerve in patients with focal elbow flexor spasticity. Design: Ambispective observational follow-up study. Patients with focal spasticity secondary to central nervous system injury with elbow flexor pattern who received thermal radiofrequency treatment in the musculocutaneous nerve between 2021 and 2023 were included. Subjects: 12 patients. Methods: Ultrasound-guided thermal radiofrequency was applied to the musculocutaneous nerve at 80°C for 90 s. Effectiveness was assessed prior to thermal radiofrequency and at 6 months using scales to measure pain (VAS), spasticity (MAS), disability (DAS), quality of life (SQol-6D), patient-perceived and physician-perceived satisfaction (PIG-C, PGA), and goal attainment (GAS). Elbow joint range of motion was evaluated via goniometry. Safety was evaluated by assessing side effects. Results: Patients had statistically significant improvements in spasticity (p = 0.003), severe elbow flexion (p = 0.02), pain (p = 0.046), functioning (p < 0.05), and spasticity-related quality of life (p < 0.05 in three sections). Furthermore, treatment goals were attained. Patient- and physician-perceived clinical improvement was achieved. Regarding side effects, two patients had dysesthesia that was self-limiting, with maximum duration of 1 month. Conclusion: Thermal radiofrequency in the musculocutaneous nerve can be a safe, effective treatment for patients with severe spasticity with an elbow flexor pattern.

This paper presents a mesoscale damage model for composite materials and its validation at the coupon level by predicting scaling effects in un-notched carbon-fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) laminates. The proposed material model presents a revised longitudinal damage law that accounts for the effect of complex 3D stress states in the prediction of onset and broadening of longitudinal compressive failure mechanisms. To predict transverse failure mechanisms of unidirectional CFRPs, this model was then combined with a 3D frictional smeared crack model. The complete mesoscale damage model was implemented in ABAQUS®/Explicit. Intralaminar damage onset and propagation were predicted using solid elements, and in-situ properties were included using different material cards according to the position and effective thickness of the plies. Delamination was captured using cohesive elements. To validate the implemented damage model, the analysis of size effects in quasi-isotropic un-notched coupons under tensile and compressive loading was compared with the test data available in the literature. Two types of scaling were addressed: sublaminate-level scaling, obtained by the repetition of the sublaminate stacking sequence, and ply-level scaling, realized by changing the effective thickness of each ply block. Validation was successfully completed as the obtained results were in agreement with the experimental findings, having an acceptable deviation from the mean experimental values.

STUDY DESIGN: Double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, parallel-group multicentric phase IIA clinical trial. OBJECTIVE: To assess the safety and tolerability of oral administration of NFX-88 in subjects with chronic spinal cord injury (SCI) and explore its efficacy in pain control. SETTING: A total of 7 spinal cord injury rehabilitation units in Spain. METHODS: A total of 61 adult with traumatic complete or incomplete spinal cord injury (C4-T12 level), were randomised 1:1:1:1 to a placebo, NFX88 1.05 g, 2.1 g, 4.2 g/day for up to 12 weeks. The placebo or NFX-88 was administered as add-on therapy to pre-existing pregabalin (150-300 mg per day). Safety and tolerability were evaluated, and the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) was the primary measure to explore the efficacy of NFX-88 in pain control. RESULTS: No severe treatment-related adverse effects were reported for any of the four study groups. 44 SCI individuals completed the study and were analysed. The data obtained from the VAS analysis and the PainDETECT Questionnaire (PD-Q) suggested that the combination of NFX88 with pregabalin is more effective than pregabalin with placebo at reducing neuropathic pain (NP) in individuals with SCI and that the dose 2.10 g/day causes the most dramatic pain relief. CONCLUSIONS: NFX88 treatment was found to be highly safe and well tolerated, with the dose of 2.10 g/day being the most effective at causing pain relief. Thus, the promising efficacy of this first-in-class lipid mediator deserves further consideration in future clinical trials.

Microplastics (MPs) are carriers of persistent organic pollutants (POPs). The influence of MPs on the toxicokinetics of POPs was investigated in a feeding experiment on Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar), in which fish were fed similar contaminant concentrations in feed with contaminants sorbed to MPs (Cont. MPs); feed with virgin MPs and contaminated feed (1:1), and feed with contaminants without MPs (Cont.). The results showed that the salmon fillets accumulated more POPs when fed with a diet where contaminants were sorbed to the MPs, despite the 125-250 µm size MPs themselves passing the intestines without absorption. Furthermore, depuration was significantly slower for several contaminants in fish fed the diet with POPs sorbed to the MPs. Modelled elimination coefficients and assimilation efficiencies of lipophilic chlorinated and brominated contaminants correlated with contaminant hydrophobicity (log Kow) within the diets and halogen classes. The more lipophilic the contaminant was, the higher was the transfer from feed to salmon fillet. The assimilation efficiency for the diet without MPs was 50-71% compared to 54-89% for the contaminated MPs diet. In addition, MPs caused a greater proportional uptake of higher molecular weight brominated congeners. In the present study, higher assimilation efficiencies and a significantly higher slope of assimilation efficiencies vs log Kow were found for the Cont. MPs diet (p = 0.029), indicating a proportionally higher uptake of higher-brominated congeners compared to the Cont. diet. Multiple variance analyses of elimination coefficients and assimilation efficiencies showed highly significant differences between the three diets for the chlorinated (p = 2E-06; 6E-04) and brominated (p = 5E-04; 4E-03) congeners and within their congeners. The perfluorinated POPs showed low assimilation efficiencies of <12%, which can be explained by faster eliminations corresponding to half-lives of 11-39 days, as well as a lower proportional distribution to the fillet, compared to e.g. the liver.

Objective: To describe the process of construction and validation of Nurseostomy, a nursing assessment instrument for individuals with intestinal ostomy in a hospital setting. Method: This is a methodological study developed following the recommendations of the Brazilian Consensus on Care for Adults with Elimination Ostomies to support the construction of the assistive technology and the validation of content, structure, and appearance with experts. The tool was developed using Microsoft Word®. The study participants were 17 stoma care nurse experts. Data collection took place between October and November 2022 using a Google Forms questionnaire. For data analysis, the Content Validity Index (CVI) was used, with a minimum agreement value of 0.8. Results: An instrument consisting of seven domains was developed according to the Wanda de Aguiar Horta theoretical framework. The global CVI was 0.91. Conclusion: The instrument was considered validated in all three axes (content, structure, and relevance) and shows potential for external validation and the development of clinical research. (AU)

The main objective of this exploratory study is to analyze the negative effects associated with the phenomenon of tokenism for Portuguese women in non-playing football roles, as well as their strategies for integration into a context where they are a minority and the social functions are dominated by men. To this end, we carried out semi-structured individual interviews with eight men and eight women, undertaking functions in the fields of coaching, psychology, medical team, planning, refereeing, and management in football organizations, and with their contents then subject to thematic analysis. Our analysis confirms how the football context strongly demarcates gender differences with women being more visible and leads to the stereotypical roles being associated with traditional femininity. The findings also observe how, in order to integrate, women align with the norms imposed by the dominant group (men) and accept being circumscribed to the spaces that hegemonic gender ideologies and practices attribute to them.

The Amazon Reef System (ARS) is one of the most important shallow and mesophotic reef ecosystems in the South Atlantic Ocean. The ARS consists mainly of extensive beds of calcareous algae interspersed by assemblages of octocorals and sponges. The enormous freshwater discharge from the Amazon River forms a plume along the extensive Amazon continental shelf, for which the hydroid community is still largely unknown. The aim of this study is to document the diversity and distribution of hydroids from the ARS, as well as to infer the influence of the plume on species composition in the different zones. Samples were collected at ninety-six stations between 15 and 240 m deep on the Amazon shelf. A total of 37 species were recorded in the studied area. Hydroid assemblages are richer in zones under lower river plume influence, and species composition differs significantly between zones with and without plume influence (PERMANOVA, p = 0.0025). The dissolved oxygen and nitrate ranges were the environmental variables significantly correlated with the hydroid distribution. This study is the first surveying the hydroid species composition and richness in the ARS, highlighting the presence of a typical reef biota and that further faunal studies in underexplored areas of the Atlantic should reveal the distribution of many poorly known hydroids species.

This article studies the trajectory planning problem of an autonomous vehicle for exploring a spatiotemporal field subject to a constraint on cumulative information. Since the resulting problem depends on the signal strength distribution of the field, which is unknown in practice, we advocate the use of a model-free reinforcement learning (RL) method to find the solution. Given the vehicle's dynamical model, a critical (and open) question is how to judiciously merge the model-based optimality conditions into the model-free RL framework for improved efficiency and generalization, for which this work provides some positive results. Specifically, we discretize the continuous action space by leveraging analytic optimality conditions for the minimum-time optimization problem via Pontryagin's minimum principle (PMP). This allows us to develop a novel discrete PMP-based RL trajectory planning algorithm, which learns a planning policy faster than those based on a continuous action space. Simulation results: 1) validate the effectiveness of the PMP-based RL algorithm and 2) demonstrate its advantages, in terms of both learning efficiency and the vehicle's exploration time, over two baseline methods for continuous control inputs.

Microplastics (MPs) are emerging contaminants of increasing concern as they may cause adverse effects and carry other contaminants, which may potentially compromise human health. Despite occurring in aquatic ecosystems worldwide, the knowledge about MP presence in different aquaculture systems and their potential impact on seafood products is still limited. This study aimed to determine the levels of MPs in water, feed, and European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax) from three relevant aquaculture systems and estimate human exposure to MPs and metals through seabass consumption. The recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) had the highest MP occurrence in water and feed. MP levels in seabass followed the aquaculture system's levels in water and feed, with RAS-farmed fish presenting the highest MP load, both in the fish gastrointestinal tract (GIT) and muscle, followed by pond-, and cage-farmed fish. MPs' characteristics across aquaculture systems and fish samples remained consistent, with the predominant recovered particles falling within the MP size range. The particles were visually characterized and chemically identified by micro-Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (µFTIR). Most of these particles were fibres composed of man-made cellulose and PET. MP levels in GIT were significantly higher than in muscle for pond- and RAS-farmed fish, MPs' bioconcentration factors >1 indicated bioconcentration in farmed seabass. Metal concentrations in fish muscle were below permissible limits, posing low intake risks for consumers according to the available health-based guidance values and estimated dietary scenarios.

Fresh sea urchin (Paracentrotus lividus) gonads are a delicacy with short seasonal availability, very often heterogeneous in size and intrinsic characteristics. This study aimed to valorise this resource through the preparation of canned products (with/without Porphyra spp.) and evaluate their physicochemical and sensory quality (3-12 months). Canning contributed to a decrease in protein, K and most carotenoids contents; and a concentration of lipids, ash, Na and Se levels. A simulated 12-month ageing led to decrease the protein and ß-carotene contents; and the Na and lutein levels concentration. The macroalgae addition resulted in an orange, darker and less soft product, with higher carbohydrates, Na, Se and carotenoids contents. A 25 g-dose contributes to significant daily intakes of protein (8-9%), EPA+DHA (47-53%), I (35-62%) and Se (30-47%). The products were commercially stable/sterile and had good sensory acceptance. Overall, canning constitutes a strategy to provide a nutritionally balanced product available all year-round.

Low-coverage imputation is becoming ever more present in ancient DNA (aDNA) studies. Imputation pipelines commonly used for present-day genomes have been shown to yield accurate results when applied to ancient genomes. However, post-mortem damage (PMD), in the form of C-to-T substitutions at the reads termini, and contamination with DNA from closely related species can potentially affect imputation performance in aDNA. In this study, we evaluated imputation performance (i) when using a genotype caller designed for aDNA, ATLAS, compared to bcftools, and (ii) when contamination is present. We evaluated imputation performance with principal component analyses and by calculating imputation error rates. With a particular focus on differently imputed sites, we found that using ATLAS prior to imputation substantially improved imputed genotypes for a very damaged ancient genome (42% PMD). Trimming the ends of the sequencing reads led to similar improvements in imputation accuracy. For the remaining genomes, ATLAS brought limited gains. Finally, to examine the effect of contamination on imputation, we added various amounts of reads from two present-day genomes to a previously downsampled high-coverage ancient genome. We observed that imputation accuracy drastically decreased for contamination rates above 5%. In conclusion, we recommend (i) accounting for PMD by either trimming sequencing reads or using a genotype caller such as ATLAS before imputing highly damaged genomes and (ii) only imputing genomes containing up to 5% of contamination.

BACKGROUND: Seafood consumers are widely exposed to diclofenac due to the high contamination levels often present in aquatic organisms. It is a potential risk to public health due its endocrine disruptor properties. Limited information is available about diclofenac behavior after food digestion to enable a more realistic scenario of consumer exposure. This study aimed to evaluate cooking effects on diclofenac levels, and determine diclofenac bioaccessibility by an in vitro digestion assay, using commercial fish species (seabass and white mullet) as models. The production of the main metabolite 4'-hydroxydiclofenac was also investigated. Fish hamburgers were spiked at two levels (150 and 1000 ng g-1) and submitted to three culinary treatments (roasting, steaming and grilling). RESULTS: The loss of water seems to increase the diclofenac levels after cooking, except in seabass with higher levels. The high bioaccessibility of diclofenac (59.1-98.3%) observed in both fish species indicates that consumers' intestines are more susceptible to absorption, which can be worrisome depending on the level of contamination. Contamination levels did not affect the diclofenac bioaccessibility in both species. Seabass, the fattest species, exhibited a higher bioaccessibility of diclofenac compared to white mullet. Overall, cooking decreased diclofenac bioaccessibility by up to 40% in seabass and 25% in white mullet. The main metabolite 4'-hydroxydiclofenac was not detected after cooking or digestion. CONCLUSION: Thus, consumption of cooked fish, preferentially grilled seabass and steamed or baked white mullet are more advisable. This study highlights the importance to consider bioaccessibility and cooking in hazard characterization studies. © 2024 The Authors. The prevalence of mental disorders in adolescents has a considerable impact on daily life, restricting tasks and diminishing overall quality of life while potentially leading to stigmatization. This study aims to measure the impact of a mental health literacy intervention program, called "Bicho de 7 Cabeças" project, in b-learning format, on the increase of knowledge and the decrease of stigma in young people from Póvoa de Varzim, in Portugal. A quasi-experimental study was conducted, from November 2022 to May 2023, involving an experimental group ("Bicho de 7 Cabeças" protocol) and an active control group (informational brochures), utilizing a pre-test/post-test design. Mental Health Literacy Measure-MHLM, Mental Health Promoting Knowledge Scale-MHPK-10, Mental Illness Knowledge Schedule-MAKS, Reported and Intended Behaviour Scale-RIBS, and Community Attitudes toward People with Mental Illness-CAMI were used. A total of 504 young students from the 9th grade enroll in this study, with a mean age around 14 years old. There is a significant difference between stigma (p <.001) and knowledge (p <.001) scores at baseline and follow-up. The results of this study shows that interventions aimed at young people for the promotion of mental health literacy and stigma reduction are needed and more initiatives should be implemented in schools to address these problems.

Pentabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-99) and bisphenol A (BPA) are synthetic organic compounds present in several daily use products. Due to their physicochemical properties, they are ubiquitously present in aquatic ecosystems and considered highly persistent. Recent evidence has confirmed that both emerging compounds are toxic to humans and terrestrial mammals eliciting a wide range of detrimental effects at endocrine and immune levels. However, the ecotoxicological responses that they can trigger in vertebrate marine species have not yet been established. Hence, this study aimed to investigate the ecotoxicological responses of juvenile Sparus aurata upon chronic (28 days) dietary exposure to BDE-99 and BPA (alone and combined) following an integrated multi-biomarker approach that combined fitness indicators (Fulton's K and splenosomatic indexes) with endocrine [cortisol, 17ß-estradiol (E2), 11-ketotestosterone (11-KT) concentrations] and immune (peroxidase and antiprotease activities) endpoints in fish plasma, and oxidative stress [superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and glutathione S-transferase (GST) activities, and lipid peroxidation (LPO)] endpoints in the fish spleen. The mixture of BDE-99 and BPA yielded the highest IBR index value in both plasma and spleen biomarkers, therefore, suggesting that the effects of these compounds are more severe when they act together. Endocrine biomarkers were the most responsive in the three contaminated treatments. Fitness indicators were not affected by the individual nor the interactive effects of BDE-99 and BPA. These findings highlight the relevance of accounting for the interactive effects of emerging chemical contaminants and integrating responses associated with distinct biological pathways when investigating their impacts on marine life, as such a multi-biomarker approach provides a broader, more realistic and adequate perspective of challenges faced by fish in a contaminated environment.
