The suction and collection of more or less contaminated biological fluids or regurgitated matter in reusable glass bottles may be responsible for nosocomial infections. Based on a study conducted in 49 cases, the authors try to demonstrate the microbiological risks in the operating theatre of changing and transport of these bottles and the risks for the environment and the hospital staff in the cleaning of these bottles. The connection to the vacuum system was found to be contaminated in 26.1% of cases, the environment of the waste evacuation and cleaning zone was contaminated in 59.2% of cases and, in 28.6% of cases, the microorganism detected was identical to that in the bottle. All of these factors suggest that a disposable system, although apparently more expensive, ensures a greater degree of safety, avoiding the problems related to transport emptying and elimination of these bottles.

RESUMO

The effect of S. boulardii on experimental colitis induced by the single oral administration of 1 mg/kg of clindamycin in the Syrian hamster was studied. Oral administration of S. boulardii for 13 days, starting 3 days prior to the administration of clindamycin, significantly reduced the mortality rate and inhibited the growth of C. difficile in the caecum and colon. There was a marked improvement in the sub-mucosa and mucosa which showed major inflammatory lesions when clindamycin was administered alone.

RESUMO

Pulse broadening calculations in monomode fibers do not include till now the phase variation of the coherent input field. Although it is correct to ignore this variation at wavelengths different from the zero material dispersion wavelength lambda(o), this effect must be taken into account for wavelengths nearly equal to lambda(o). We have found for silica-type fibers that if the relative source linewidth (Deltalambda(o))/lambdao is less than 10(-3), the phase effect largely dominates over important distances in the evaluation of the pulse broadening giving rise to a decrease of the r.m.s. output pulse width. Therefore, this effect must be relevant for the estimation of the maximum information capacity on monomode fibers.

RESUMO

In this paper, the intrinsic diameter of the noncircular cross section of an unclad optical fiber is defined and determines the fiber dimension. Its value can be determined by studying the forwardscattering pattern from the fiber illuminated by a laser beam perpendicular to its axis. A knowledge of the shape of the fiber is not necessary. The suggested method is nondestructive. Moreover, it provides an estimate of the deformation of the fiber cross section.

RESUMO

Study of the light scattered from an unclad optical fiber illuminated by a laser beam perpendicular to its axis gives a valuation of little defects of the fiber cross section. The shifts of some bright fringes that occur when the fiber is rotated are observed. Comparison between experimental measurements and ray interference computations shows that the cross section of the fiber under test is neither circular nor elliptical, but can be described with good approximation by a limited Fourier series, the coefficients of which are estimated.
