RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: to assess the physical and mental components of nursing professionals' quality of life and associate them with individual, health and work characteristics. METHODS: cross-sectional research, with nursing professionals from a university hospital in São Paulo. Own questionnaire and validated instruments were applied. RESULTS: the overall quality of life was compromised. The physical component was lower in relation to low family income and among those who perceived greater control/pressure at work, and better for those who practiced physical activity and had support of leader and organization. The mental component was lower in professionals who reported dissatisfaction with work, worse self-rated physical health and were older. Scores for both components reduced due to work-related illnesses, worse work ability and increased daytime sleepiness. CONCLUSIONS: quality of life was statistically associated with controllable institutional factors and individual resources that, except age, can be promoted.

Abstract The COVID-19 pandemic required the restructuring of educational models, including the rapid transition from face-to-face to remote education. The aim of this qualitative research was to understand the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on undergraduate professors' work and health at a public university in the state of São Paulo. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 17 undergraduate faculty of humanities, biological and exact sciences form August to September 2020. The interviews were recorded and transcribed. From the content analysis, four thematic categories emerged: (1) changes in the work routine and their impacts, including adjustment to remote work and the difficulties in establishing boundaries between work and their personal life; (2) changes in the dynamics between faculty and students and the possibility of rethinking teaching practice; (3) the relationship between faculty and the university with emphasis on the decision-making process, support for the transition to remote teaching, and concerns about the quality of teaching; and (4) anguish and fears related to the pandemic that added to the set of work-related stressors. Our findings showed that actions towards the communicational dynamics, as well as actions towards faculties' mental health should be implemented.

RESUMO

Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic made it necessary to rapidly adapt ways of working, forcing adoption of home working, and public higher education institutions were no exception to this trend. Objectives: To analyze the initial phase of implementation of emergency teleworking at a public university, including its ramifications and repercussions for workers. Methods: This article constitutes a narrative account of the university's experience with teleworking, evaluated by analysis of a report produced by the institution after a survey of the needs of workers assigned to emergency teleworking because of the health crisis. Report of the experience: The analysis identified both opportunities and challenges created by the experience, which involved 50% of the institution's workers who were assigned to this modality of working. The most important opportunities were a perception of increased productivity compared to on-site working and improvements in quality of life and mental health. In counterpoint, barriers observed included worsening of mental health symptoms in the majority of workers who already had some type of mental disorder before the pandemic, work overload, difficulties with reconciling work routines with domestic activities, and a lack of the conditions and training needed to work from home. Conclusions: It should be emphasized that the various characteristics observed are related to the initial stages of adaptation to pandemic conditions and the new working routine. In counterpoint, some of the characteristics identified could offer important clues for continuation of teleworking and support for the university administration's planning for the future.

RESUMO

Introduction: Workers on leave awaiting confirmation of coronavirus infection may experience worry and anticipatory stress. Objectives: The objective of this study was to assess the anxiety levels of employees at a public university in the state of São Paulo who were put on leave due to suspected or confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection and to correlate their anxiety levels with personal and work-related variables. Methods: This cross-sectional study used an online survey to collect data from employees who took a diagnostic test for COVID-19. The participants' anxiety level was measured using Greenberger and Padesky's Anxiety Inventory, while data on personal and work-related variables were collected through a socio-demographic questionnaire. Results: Most of the 153 participants (76.5%) reported anxiety symptoms. COVID-19 infection was confirmed in 51%. The highest prevalence of severe anxiety (27%) was among employees who had indirect contact with COVID-19 patients. Three variables - being a woman, being a regular employee, and previous physical health problems - were responsible for a higher risk of anxiety. Conclusions: This study's findings indicate the need to protect the mental health of the university's employees.

This research aimed to assess the quality of life of patients undergoing allogeneic, hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, comparing the pre-hematopoietic stem cell transplantation phase with the phase of protective isolation in the ward and theimmediate post-hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. The sample comprised seven patients (four men and three women) who were submitted to this procedure in the first half of 2008. For the data collection, the Medical Outcomes Study 36-Item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36) was used and individually applied in face-to-face situations. The comparison between mean data collected in the pre-hematopoietic stem cell transplantation phase and in the ward revealed a statistically significant difference in Functional Capacity (p=0.022) and Pain (p=0.036). When comparing the ward and post-hematopoietic stem cell transplantation phases, a significant difference in General Health (p=0.036) was clearly shown. There was no statistically significant difference between the pre- and post-hematopoietic stem cell transplantation variables. Thus, when comparing the three transplantation phases, it was found that the quality of life diminished during protective confinement in the ward, followed by the recovery of the evaluated aspects.(AU)
