RESUMO

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is characterized by inappropriate levels of activity, impulsivity, and inattention. Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) is a condition involving challenges in acquiring and executing motor skills. This cross-sectional study aimed to distinguish motor symptoms between ADHD and ADHD/DCD. A total of 283 children from two elementary schools underwent screening, leading to the identification of 27 children with ADHD. The assessment encompassed the Swanson, Nolan, and Pelham-IV Questionnaire (SNAP-IV), the Movement Assessment Battery for Children (MABC-2), and the Motor Development Scale (MDS). The groups consisted of ADHD (14) and ADHD/DCD (13). Statistical analysis revealed significant differences in general motor age means between groups (p = 0.016), indicating inferior performance in the ADHD/DCD group. The coexistence of DCD significantly influenced the motor performance of children with ADHD, particularly in fine motor skills (p = 0.018) and balance (p = 0.033). Both groups exhibited mild to moderate risk of motor development delay. It is suggested that ADHD is associated with motor problems, even when DCD is not co-occurring. Specific domain-based analysis could demonstrate how the co-occurrence with DCD affects the motor performance of children with ADHD, with statistically significant differences observed in fine motor skills and balance.

RESUMO

Introduction: Studies on human T-lymphotropic virus 1/2 (HTLV-1/2) infection are scarce in incarcerated population. Therefore, this study estimated the prevalence of HTLV-1/2 infection among prisoners of the major penitentiary complex of Goiás State, Central-West Brazil, comparing it with available data from other Brazilian regions. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 910 prisoners of the major penitentiary complex in the State of Goiás, Central-West Brazil. All participants were interviewed, and their serum samples were tested for anti-HTLV-1/2 using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA; Murex HTLV-I + II, DiaSorin, Dartford, UK). Seropositive samples were submitted for confirmation by a line immunoassay (INNO-LIA HTLV I/II, Fujirebio, Europe N.V., Belgium). Results: The majority of participants were males (83.1%), between 25 and 39 years old (56.1%; mean age: 31.98 years), self-reported brown ethnicity (56.2%) and reported 9 years or less of formal education (41.4%). Most reported using non-injectable illicit drugs and various sexual behaviors that present risk for sexually transmitted infections (STIs). The prevalence of anti-HTLV-1/2 was 0.33% (95% CI: 0.07-0.96), HTLV-1 (0.22%) and HTLV-2 (0.11%). The two HTLV-1 seropositive prisoners reported high-risk sexual behaviors, and the HTLV-2 seropositive individual was breastfed during childhood (> 6 months) by her mother and three other women. Conclusion: These data revealed a relatively low seroprevalence of HTLV-1/2 in prisoners in Central-West Brazil, and evidence of HTLV-1 and HTLV-2 circulation in the major penitentiary complex of Goiás State. Given the prevalence of high-risk sexual behaviors, there is a crucial need to intensify education and health programs in prisons to effectively control and prevent HTLV-1/2 and other STIs.

RESUMO

Objective The Body Image Disturbance Questionnaire for Scoliosis (BIDQ-S) for scoliosis derives from the Body Image Disturbance Questionnaire (BIDQ) with specific adaptation for scoliosis patients. Despite its significance and applicability, this instrument has never been translated into Brazilian Portuguese. The current study aimed to translate, transculturally adapt, and validate the BIDQ-S into Brazilian Portuguese. Methods BIDQ-S was translated and culturally adapted into Brazilian Portuguese using the American Association of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS) criteria. The questionnaire validation relied on internal consistency and comparison with the Cobb angle, Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQL), and Scoliosis Research Society (SRS-22). The Brazilian version (BR-)BIDQ-S validation occurred in a sample of 35 adolescents with scoliosis waiting for specialized treatment. Results Internal consistency of the BR-BIDQ-S was 0.899 according to the Cronbach's index (i.e., virtually perfect). Although BR-BIDQ-S did not correlate with the Cobb angle, it presented correlations with the Physical, Emotional, and Social domains from the PedsQL and the Function/Activity domain from the SRS-22. Conclusion BR-BIDQ-S was reliable in evaluating the body image of adolescents with scoliosis, presenting an internal consistency of 0,899 (virtually perfect). Moreover, similar to the original instrument, it correlated with PedsQL and SRS-22.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Self-care is essential for minimizing the long-term progression of hypertension (HTN) and improving global health outcomes. However, little is known about the predictors of HTN self-care among adults with HTN in Brazil. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the self-care practices and the association of sociodemographic and clinical factors of adults with HTN in Brazil. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study conducted by telephone with 120 adults with HTN monitored in a specialized outpatient clinic of a teaching hospital. Sociodemographic and clinical information was collected by a questionnaire survey. Self-care was assessed by the Self-care of Hypertension Inventory version 2. Multiple regression and Kendall's correlation analyses were performed to determine possible predictors. RESULTS: Low levels of self-care were observed across maintenance, management, and confidence measures. A weak correlation was observed between self-care maintenance and education (-0.13), the time of diagnosis (0.16), and the number of medications (0.15); self-care management and family income (0.13) and cognitive function (0.17); and self-care confidence and systolic (-0.15) and diastolic (-0.18) blood pressure values and time of diagnosis (0.16). In multiple regression analysis, self-care confidence was a predictor of self-care maintenance ( ß = 0.30; 95% confidence interval, 0.10-0.36) and management ( ß = 0.20; 95% confidence interval, 0.03-0.46). CONCLUSION: Confidence was essential in the maintenance and management of self-care and is central to the control of HTN. Self-care interventions must consider the different aspects that may affect self-care, highlighting improving self-care confidence as a main goal.

The study aimed to analyze the perception of risk for infection by Treponema pallidum in female public security workers, in the capital of the State of Goiás, Goiânia. This is a qualitative, descriptive research with 47 women through the application of a semi-structured instrument. To analyze the collections of narratives, the content analysis method was used. There was the emergence of 03 (three) thematic categories: (Mis) General knowledge about syphilis; Taboos regarding the use of condoms in a monogamous relationship; and New tools and health education. The main findings reveal the low perception of knowledge about syphilis, the feeling of invulnerability and the low adherence to the use of condoms among women in the police force. These results reinforce the need for effective intervention programs to prevent this infection, which has epidemic proportions and is projected to increase, among public security workers.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Osteoarthritis (OA) is characterised by joint degeneration and represents the leading cause of disability in old age. OA entails a personal burden, with suffering and reduced quality of life (QoL). OBJECTIVE: To compare the QoL of individuals with OA to that of asymptomatic individuals in order to determine the actual impact of OA on the affected population. METHOD: Cross-sectional study with a sample of 140 patients diagnosed with OA. Another 51 sex- and age-matched asymptomatic individuals with no clinical signs of knee OA or lower limb osteoarticular symptoms for at least the preceding six months were recruited. Knee OA was stratified radiologically according to the Ahlbäck classification (1968). QoL was measured using the SF-36 questionnaire (Medical Outcomes Study 36-Item Short-Form Health Survey). The participants were assigned to "osteoarthritis" (OG) or "asymptomatic" (AG) groups. RESULTS: The OG presented greater body mass and BMI than the AG. Perceived QoL was worse for the OG than the AG across SF-36 domains. In the comparison of the grades of OA degeneration, the group with Ahlbäck grades 4 and 5 (severe) perceived their QoL as poorer than those with grades 1, 2, and 3 (moderate). The grade of OA, older age, and BMI were shown to be strong independent predictors of poor perceived quality of life. CONCLUSION: Individuals with knee OA showed worse perceived QoL compared with asymptomatic individuals. The domains with the lowest scores were physical functioning and functional limitation. Quality of life was influenced by BMI, age, sex, and grade of osteoarthritis.

RESUMO

Abstract Objective: To analyze the association between osteolysis at the prosthesis interfaces, as determined by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with multiacquisition variable-resonance image combination selective (MAVRIC-SL) sequences, and clinical severity after knee or hip arthroplasty, as well as to assess interobserver and intraobserver agreement on periprosthetic bone resorption. Materials and Methods: This was a cross-sectional study of 47 patients (49 joints) under postoperative follow-up after knee or hip arthroplasty, with chronic pain, between March 2019 and August 2020. All of the patients completed the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) questionnaire. The component interfaces were evaluated and ordered into two groups: osseointegrated and osteolytic. Nonparametric tests were used. Results: There were significant differences between the two groups in terms of the mean WOMAC scores: total (p = 0.010); stiffness domain (p = 0.047); and function (p = 0.011) domains. There was substantial interobserver and intraobserver agreement for most analyses of the components. Conclusion: Periprosthetic osteolysis appears to be associated with clinical complaints of pain in the post-arthroplasty scenario, and MAVRIC-SL provides reproducible assessments. It could prove to be an important tool for orthopedists to use in the evaluation of challenging cases of chronic pain after arthroplasty.

BACKGROUND: Gestational syphilis requires early detection and proper treatment to prevent negative maternal-fetal outcomes. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of an educational intervention on treatment adherence and knowledge about syphilis in postpartum women with positive Treponema pallidum results. METHODS: A randomized, parallel, and open clinical trial was conducted with 64 postpartum women who tested positive for T. pallidum, assigned to two groups (1:1 ratio). The Intervention Group (IG) received an educational intervention on syphilis, including an explanatory leaflet and hands-on demonstrations, along with standard guidelines. The Control Group (CG) received standard guidelines alone. Pre-test and post-test assessments were conducted to measure knowledge and treatment adherence. Statistical analyses included descriptive and inferential methods, assessing group homogeneity using the Chi-square or Fishers exact test. The interventions effectiveness was determined using relative risk, and pre- and post-test scores were compared using the independent t test. RESULTS: The post-test revealed improvements in knowledge scores for general knowledge, treatment, and prevention domains (p < .05). The IG demonstrated an increase in post-test knowledge scores (p = .001), with association between post-test scores and treatment adherence (p = .001). CONCLUSION: The educational intervention on syphilis improved knowledge and treatment adherence in postpartum women with syphilis.

RESUMO

Brazilian prison complexes are characterized by overcrowded cells and precarious conditions, leading to chronically low vacancy. Brazilian studies involving overt and occult infection (OBI) in this population are still scarce despite the vulnerability of people deprived of liberty to hepatitis B. Therefore, this study estimated the prevalence of HBV infection (overall and OBI) in individuals deprived of liberty in prisons in Central-Western Brazil. In addition, factors associated with HBV infection were evaluated. This cross-sectional study was conducted with a total of 1083 prisoners who were tested for serological hepatitis B markers and HBV DNA from 2017 to 2020. Factors associated with lifetime HBV infection were investigated using logistic regression. An overall prevalence of HBV infection of 10.1% (95% CI: 8.42-12.11) was detected. Only 32.8% (95% CI: 30.08-35.76) had isolated anti-HBs positivity (serological evidence of HBV vaccination). Indeed, more than half of the population was susceptible to HBV infection (57.1%; 95% CI: 54.15-60.13). HBV DNA was detected in one HBsAg-positive sample (n=1/9; 11%). Also, HBV DNA was detected in five HBsAg-negative samples (n=5/1074), resulting in a prevalence of 0.5% (95% CI: 0.15-1.08) for occult infection. After the multivariate analysis, sexual intercourse with a partner living with HIV was a predictor independently associated with HBV exposure (OR: 4.3; 95% CI: 1.26-14.55; p<0.020). These data demonstrate the need for preventive measures, mainly aimed at health education and better strategies for hepatitis B screening to control this infection in prisons more effectively.

RESUMO

AIMS: Cardiovascular risk factors present a high prevalence and have an impact on the morbimortality of the elderly; however, studies evaluating the impact of cardiovascular risk factors in the elderly have had short follow-up times and have not allowed specific analyses of the effects of these factors in the aged population, including how they affect the survival of the elderly. This study aimed to analyse the survival of elderly individuals living in the community, considering the presence of cardiovascular risk factors. METHODS AND RESULTS: A prospective 10-year follow-up was initiated in 2008 with a cohort of 418 elderly people living in a community in Central Brazil. The Kaplan-Meier method and the Cox proportional hazards model were used to examine the association between survival and cardiovascular risk factors. The mean age of the participants was 70.6 (±7.1) years; most participants were hypertensive (81.6%) and participated in irregular physical activity (44%), and 43.3% smoked. After a mean follow-up of 8.38 (±2.82) years, 59.3% had survived and 34.1% had died; among the deaths, 14.1% were due to cardiovascular causes. Age [hazard ratio (HR) 1.067, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.027-1.109], hypertension (HR 3.178, 95% CI 1.144-8.826), and smoking (HR 2.235, 95% CI 1.253-3.987) were confirmed as risk factors for reduced survival, whereas physical activity was a protective factor (HR 0.456, 95% CI 0.206-1.007). CONCLUSION: The results from this study highlight the need for educational policies towards hypertension and smoking prevention among elderly people, and participation in physical activity needs to be encouraged.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate research from Brazilian postgraduate students who provide evidence of effectiveness for Nursing Interventions Classification (NIC). METHODS: We conducted a literature review study of thesis and dissertations available in the Brazilian Digital Library of Dissertations and Theses (D/T) in May 2021 regardless of the year they were conducted. In those studies that did not utilize the NIC in the effectiveness evaluation, the cross-mapping methodology was employed between NIC and the interventions used by the authors of the studies. RESULTS: Using a systematic process, we identified 91 studies. Twenty-seven met a priori inclusion and exclusion criteria. We found an increase in studies that focused on nursing interventions in the last 10 years (n = 19), a large proportion of clinical trials (n = 16), and the majority of articles from the Southeast region of Brazil (n = 20). The areas of focus were adult and elderly care, and with a special interest in the behavioral domain (n = 11). Two sensitivity criteria were identified in all D/T (n = 27), and each study presented evidence of effectiveness of a minimum of three criteria simultaneously. CONCLUSIONS: Based on the effectiveness criteria, the Brazilian scientific production in postgraduate programs carried out by nurses provides evidence of the effectiveness for NIC nursing interventions. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING PRACTICE: It is recommended to conduct further research that uses the NIC in the planning, conduct, and evaluation of interventions, based on effectiveness criteria of nursing sensitivity.

RESUMO

Objective: To test the hypothesis that undenatured type II collagen (UC-II) relieves pain, quality of life, and joint function in women aged from 60 to 80 years with knee osteoarthritis. Methods: 53 patients in the UC-II treatment group (for 90 days) and 52 in the control group (without UC-II) were evaluated at 1, 30, and 90 days regarding health-related quality of life, pain, and function with questionnaires, anthropometric data, alignment, range of motion, and radiographic analysis. Results: Quality of life increased significantly in the Physical domain in the treatment vs control group. Also, there was a difference between the first and the last evaluation on the pain visual analog scale (-3.8 ± 1.8 versus -1.3 ± 2.0) and on the WOMAC score (-9.5 ± 11.9 versus -1.3 ± 11.1). No variation in the temporal evolution of the Mental domain was found. Conclusion: Pain, joint stiffness, and quality of life (Physical domain) improved with the inclusion of UC-II for 90 days to the therapeutic toolbox for knee osteoarthritis in individuals aged 60 to 80 years. Level of evidence II, Comparative Prospective Study.

OBJECTIVE: To systematically establish whether there is an association between polymorphisms and avascular necrosis in patients with sickle cell disease. DATA SOURCE: The review, conducted according to PRISMA guidelines and registered with PROSPERO, was based on research of studies in PubMed, SciELO, LILACS, BVS databases and in the gray literature (Google Scholar and Open Gray) published until June 2020. The STROBE initiative was used to analyze the articles' quality. DATA SYNTHESIS: Ten articles were selected from the databases and two were included through manual search, totaling 12 studies. All samples gathered 2,362 patients. According to STROBE, seven studies fully and/or partially covered more than 70% of the essential items and two studies reached less than 60%, with an overall variation of 86.4-54.5%. The results indicate that polymorphisms in the genes of the bone morphogenetic protein 6 (BMP6), Klotho (KL) and Annexin A2 (ANXA2) may be associated with osteonecrosis in the context of sickle cell disease. Six articles addressed the polymorphism in the MTHFR enzyme gene, but only one found a positive association. Polymorphisms associated with the DARC receptor, the ITGA4 gene, CD36 and thrombophilia protein genes were not associated in any of the studies. CONCLUSIONS: The results indicate that the polymorphisms in BMP6, Klotho and ANXA2 genes may be associated with avascular necrosis in patients with sickle cell disease. However, in order to confirm these genetic changes as risk factors, further studies with greater statistical power and methodological rigor are needed.

RESUMO

The scope of this cross-sectional study was to describe the periodontal status and its association with sociodemographic, oral-health related behaviors and use of drugs among temporarily institutionalized homeless adults. The data were collected through oral clinical examination and a questionnaire with 102 adults attending the only public institution for this group in Goiânia, Goiás, Brazil. The periodontal condition was measured by the presence of bleeding on probing, dental calculus and pockets, according to the Community Periodontal Index (CPI). Chi-square test and Poisson regressions with robust variance were performed. The prevalence of CPI>1 was 83.3%. Approximately 68% of the sample had bleeding, 82.4% had calculus and 9.8% had periodontal pockets. In the bivariate analyses, those who reported having used illicit drugs had a higher prevalence of calculus; males and unmarried adults had a higher prevalence of pockets. In the adjusted analysis, individuals who used dental floss had a lower prevalence of bleeding (PR=0.58; 95%CI=0.35-0.96). The remaining covariates were not associated with the outcomes. It was concluded that the prevalence of periodontal alteration was high, the most frequent condition was calculus and the only independent association was between bleeding and the use of dental floss.

OBJECTIVE: The objective was to evaluate the level of evidence about the associated factors and the risk factors of osteonecrosis of femoral head (ONFH) in sickle cell individuals. METHODS: The review was based on the search and selection of studies available in the electronic databases PubMed, SCIELO, LILACS, BVS. As descriptors, the terms of Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) and Health Sciences Descriptors (DeCS) corresponding to "Osteonecrosis", "Necrosis avascular" and "Aseptic necrosis" and "Femoral head" and "sickle cell disease" and "risk factor" and "predictor". RESULTS: Among clinical and laboratorial factors the most promising risk factors were the severity of sickle cell disease and acute chest syndrome. As a result, from studies of a moderate level of quality, blood pressure, body weight, previous trauma, haemoglobin to haematocrit ratio (Hb/HCT), and number of hospitalizations can be highlighted. Others, such as genetic markers and male gender, have also been positively associated in lower quality studies. CONCLUSION: For a better clarification of what the risk factors are for the ONFH, it is necessary to study with populations of different origins, different ages, different profiles of Hb, which present greater methodological rigor and perform a multivariate analysis to control confounding factors. Further study is also needed to understand the genetic determinants of ONFH.
