RESUMO

Maternal nutrition and physical activity during pregnancy and lactation can modify offspring development. Here, we investigated the effects of maternal aerobic exercise (AE) and Western diet (WD) on brain development, cognitive flexibility, and memory of progenies. Sixteen adult female mice were assigned to AE or sedentary groups (SED) and fed a balanced diet (BD) or WD. Offspring were categorized into four groups: WD + AE, WD + SED, BD + AE, and BD + SED. The AE group showed enhanced spontaneous alternation in the T-maze test, suggesting an improvement in working memory and tasks related to cognitive flexibility. The novel object recognition (NOR) test showed that the BD + AE pups improved their absolute discrimination and discrimination index at 24 h, which suggests a delay in memory consolidation without affecting evocation. WD + SED showed poorer discrimination and recognition memory. The pups of AE mothers had better efficiency in short-term memory, whereas WD offspring showed low performance in long-term memory. Interestingly, exercise improved tasks related to cognitive flexibility, regardless of the diet. These findings indicate that maternal diet and physical activity modify offspring development and suggest that maternal AE during pregnancy could be a beneficial intervention to counteract the adverse effects of WD by improving spatial memory and cognitive flexibility in offspring.

RESUMO

The increasing prevalence of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) has sparked global concern due to the dwindling availability of effective antibiotics. To increase our treatment options, researchers have investigated naturally occurring antimicrobial compounds and have identified MC21-A (C58), which has potent antimicrobial activity against MRSA. Recently, we have devised total synthesis schemes for C58 and its chloro-analog, C59. Here, we report that both compounds eradicate 90% of the 39 MRSA isolates tested [MIC90 and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC90)] at lower or comparable concentrations compared to several standard-of-care (SoC) antimicrobials including daptomycin, vancomycin, and linezolid. Furthermore, a stable, water-soluble sodium salt of C59, C59Na, demonstrates antimicrobial activity comparable to C59. C59, unlike vancomycin, kills stationary-phase MRSA in a dose-dependent manner and completely eradicates MRSA biofilms. In contrast to vancomycin, exposing MRSA to sub-MIC concentrations of C59 does not result in the emergence of spontaneous resistance. Similarly, in a multi-step study, C59 demonstrates a low propensity of resistance acquisition when compared to SoC antimicrobials, such as linezolid and clindamycin. Our findings suggest C58, C59, and C59Na are non-toxic to mammalian cells at concentrations that exert antimicrobial activity; the lethal dose at median cell viability (LD50) is at least fivefold higher than the MBC90 in the two mammalian cell lines tested. A morphological examination of the effects of C59 on a MRSA isolate suggests the inhibition of the cell division process as a mechanism of action. Our results demonstrate the potential of this naturally occurring compound and its analogs as non-toxic next-generation antimicrobials to combat MRSA infections. IMPORTANCE: The rapid emergence of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) isolates has precipitated a critical need for novel antibiotics. We have developed a one-pot synthesis method for naturally occurring compounds such as MC21-A (C58) and its chloro-analog, C59. Our findings demonstrate that these compounds kill MRSA isolates at lower or comparable concentrations to standard-of-care (SoC) antimicrobials. C59 eradicates MRSA cells in biofilms, which are notoriously difficult to treat with SoC antibiotics. Additionally, the lack of resistance development observed with C59 treatment is a significant advantage when compared to currently available antibiotics. Furthermore, these compounds are non-toxic to mammalian cell lines at effective concentrations. Our findings indicate the potential of these compounds to treat MRSA infections and underscore the importance of exploring natural products for novel antibiotics. Further investigation will be essential to fully realize the therapeutic potential of these next-generation antimicrobials to address the critical issue of antimicrobial resistance.

RESUMO

Microbial natural products are specialized metabolites that are sources of many bioactive compounds including antibiotics, antifungals, antiparasitics, anticancer agents, and probes of biology. The assembly of libraries of producers of natural products has traditionally been the province of the pharmaceutical industry. This sector has gathered significant historical collections of bacteria and fungi to identify new drug leads with outstanding outcomes-upwards of 60% of drug scaffolds originate from such libraries. Despite this success, the repeated rediscovery of known compounds and the resultant diminishing chemical novelty contributed to a pivot from this source of bioactive compounds toward more tractable synthetic compounds in the drug industry. The advent of advanced mass spectrometry tools, along with rapid whole genome sequencing and in silico identification of biosynthetic gene clusters that encode the machinery necessary for the synthesis of specialized metabolites, offers the opportunity to revisit microbial natural product libraries with renewed vigor. Assembling a suitable library of microbes and extracts for screening requires the investment of resources and the development of methods that have customarily been the proprietary purview of large pharmaceutical companies. Here, we report a perspective on our efforts to assemble a library of natural product-producing microbes and the establishment of methods to extract and fractionate bioactive compounds using resources available to most academic labs. We validate the library and approach through a series of screens for antimicrobial and cytotoxic agents. This work serves as a blueprint for establishing libraries of microbial natural product producers and bioactive extract fractions suitable for screens of bioactive compounds. ONE-SENTENCE SUMMARY: Natural products are key to discovery of novel antimicrobial agents: Here, we describe our experience and lessons learned in constructing a microbial natural product and pre-fractionated extract library.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: The incidence of intertrochanteric fractures is increasing, and health institutions must know the profile of their patients. This paper describes the relationship between clinical characteristics and attention process with surgical delay and prolonged hospitalization length in patients with intertrochanteric fractures admitted to a Latin-American trauma center. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospective, comparative, cross-sectional study. The medical records of patients admitted for intertrochanteric fracture between August 1st 2019 and May 31st 2021 were reviewed to extract data regarding clinical characteristics, causes of surgery delay, and hospitalization length. Regression models were used to distinguish potential predictor variables on surgical delay and hospitalization length. RESULTS: 362 cases with intertrochanteric fractures were surgically treated during the study period. The mean time from admission to surgery was 4.2 ± 3.8 days. in 33,1% of the cases the surgery was performed within the first 48 h. A history of coronary heart disease (CHD) and chronic kidney disease were potential predictors of surgery delay (p<0.005). Only CHD was independently associated with surgery delay (OR 5.267 [95%CI 1.201-23.100); p = 0.028). Hospitalization was extended in cases where surgery was performed after 48 h (10,1 ± 6,2 days vs 5,9 ± 3,0 days; p<0.001). The regression model showed that for each day passed from fracture to admission and each day from admission to surgery, the hospitalization duration increased by 3,7 and 4,4 days, respectively. DISCUSSION: Patients with intertrochanteric fractures have comorbidities that potentially delay their surgical treatment and prolong hospitalization duration. The efficient use of hospital resources and the proper early evaluation of cardiac pathologies conducted during admission, could positively impact the achievement of surgical treatment within the first 48 h after the fracture, reducing hospitalization duration.

RESUMO

Background Advances in antiretroviral therapy (ART) enable people with HIV to live longer, healthier lives. However, older people with HIV (OPWH) are more susceptible to long-term toxicity and drug interactions associated with ART. Racial and ethnic minorities have specific social determinants of health, which increase their risks of negative outcomes. Objective To determine if there were differences in the safety and effectiveness of ART in White, Black, and Hispanic OPWH. Methods A retrospective observational study was conducted on patients receiving care between January 1, 2017, and December 31, 2022, at two affiliated HIV clinics in South Florida. The primary effectiveness endpoint was the percentage of OPWH with undetectable viral load (< 50 copies/mL) throughout the study. Secondary safety endpoints were changes in median metabolic, hepatic, and renal parameters. A two-way analysis of variance or the Chi-square test was used to determine differences between groups. Results A total of 116 White, 42 Black, and 40 Hispanic OPWH were included. Upon enrollment, most patients (90.7%) were receiving ART. Of these, the percentage with undetectable viral load was lower among Black (61.8%) compared with White (85.8%; P < 0.01) or Hispanic (83.3%; P < 0.05) patients. Similarly, throughout the study after the first visit, the percentage with undetectable viral load was lower among Black (61.6%) compared with White (84.7%; P < 0.05) or Hispanic (83.3%; P = 0.12) patients. However, there were no significant differences in the percentage of virally suppressed (< 200 copies/mL) participants throughout the study after the first visit between Black (88.5%), White (94.9%), and Hispanic (96.7%) patients. Additionally, no significant changes in safety endpoints were observed among the groups throughout the study. Conclusion Fewer Black OPWH had undetectable viral load upon enrollment and throughout the study compared with White or Hispanic OPWH, suggesting the need to provide more targeted interventions for Black patients.

RESUMO

Anticancer peptides are increasingly being considered as alternative treatments for cancer due to their potency, selectivity, and low toxicity. Previously, the peptide LfcinB (21-25)Pal showed in vitro anticancer effects against the Caco-2 colon cancer cell line (half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50): 86 µM). In this study, we developed modifications to the peptide sequence to increase its anticancer activity. Sequence modifications were made such as the inclusion of amino hexanoic acid (Ahx), N-terminal biotinylation, acetylation, and substitutions of Orn for Arg and/or d-Arg by l-Arg. The molecules were synthesized using manual solid-phase peptide synthesis (SPPS), and their synthetic feasibility (SAScore) ranged from 6.2 to 7.6. The chromatographic purities of the synthesized peptides were greater than 89%. We found that Ahx-RWQWRWQWR and RWQWRWQW-Orn showed activity against both Caco-2 and HT-29 cell lines and decreased IC50 values by approx. 50% in Caco-2 cells (IC50: 40 µM) when compared to the parent peptide RWQWRWQWR. Moreover, the modified peptides demonstrated lower hemolytic effects, with values <10% at 200 µg/mL. Toxicity was assessed using the Galleria mellonella model and the half-maximal lethal dose (LD50) for the best peptides was >100 mg/kg, indicating that their toxicity is classified as moderately toxic or lower. In contrast, cisplatin showed an LD50 of 13 mg/Kg. The designed anticancer peptides presented good in vitro activity and low toxicity, making them promising molecules for future drug development studies.

RESUMO

Matrix effect and sample pretreatment significantly affect the percentage recovery of peptides in biological matrices, affecting the method robustness and accuracy. To counteract this effect, an internal standard (IS) is used; however, in most cases this is not available, which limits the analytical method. It is important to identify short peptides that can be used as ISs in the quantification of peptides in biological matrices. In this study, doping peptides GHRP-4, GHRP-5, GHRP-6, Sermorelin (1-11), Sermorelin (13-20) and Sermorelin (22-29) were synthesized using solid-phase peptide synthesis. Treatment with human blood, trypsin and chymotrypsin was used to determine the stability of the peptides. Products were evaluated using the high-performance liquid chromatography-diode array detector (HPLC-DAD) method. The analytical methodology and sample pretreatment were effective for the analysis of these molecules. A unique profile related to protein binding and enzymatic stability of each peptide was established. GHRP-4, GHRP-6 and Sermorelin (22-29) can be considered as in-house ISs as they were stable to enzyme and blood treatment and can be used for the quantification of peptides in biological samples. Peptides GHRP-6 and Sermorelin (22-29) were used to analyse a dimeric peptide (26 [F] LfcinB (20-30)2 ) in four different matrices to test these peptides as in-house IS.

RESUMO

The antifungal activity of palindromic peptide RWQWRWQWR and its derivatives was evaluated against clinical isolates of Candida albicans and C. auris. Also, Bidens pilosa ethanolic extracts of leaves and stem were evaluated. Furthermore, combinations of peptide, extract, and/or fluconazole (FLC) were evaluated. The cytotoxicity of peptides and extracts in erythrocytes and fibroblasts was determined. The original palindromic peptide, some derivative peptides, and the ethanolic extract of leaves of B. pilosa exhibited the highest activity in some of the strains evaluated. Synergy was obtained between the peptide and the FLC against C. auris 435. The combination of the extract and the original palindromic peptide against C. albicans SC5314, C. auris 435, and C. auris 537 decreased the minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs) by a factor of between 4 and 16. These mixtures induced changes in cell morphology, such as deformations on the cell surface. The results suggest that the combination of RWQWRWQWR and B. pilosa extract is an alternative for enhancing antifungal activity and decreasing cytotoxicity and costs and should be considered to be a promising strategy for treating diseases caused by Candida spp.

RESUMO

CNTs/Fe-BTC composite materials were synthesized with the one-step solvothermal method. MWCNTs and SWCNTs were incorporated in situ during synthesis. The composite materials were characterized by different analytical techniques and used in the CO2-photocatalytic reduction to value-added products and clean fuels. In the incorporation of CNTs into Fe-BTC, better physical-chemical and optical properties were observed compared to Fe-BTC pristine. SEM images showed that CNTs were incorporated into the porous structure of Fe-BTC, indicating the synergy between them. Fe-BTC pristine showed to be selective to ethanol and methanol; although, it was more selective to ethanol. However, the incorporation of small amounts of CNTs into Fe-BTC not only showed higher production rates but changes in the selectivity compared with the Fe-BTC pristine were also observed. It is important to mention that the incorporation of CNTs into MOF Fe-BTC allowed for increasing the mobility of electrons, decreasing the recombination of charge carriers (electron/hole), and increasing the photocatalytic activity. In both reaction systems (batch and continuous), composite materials showed to be selective towards methanol and ethanol; however, in the continuous system, lower production rates were observed due to the decrease in the residence time compared to the batch system. Therefore, these composite materials are very promising systems to convert CO2 to clean fuels that could replace fossil fuels soon.

RESUMO

The dimeric peptide 26[F]: (RRWQWRFKKLG)2-K-Ahx has exhibited a potent cytotoxic effect against breast cancer cell lines, with position 26 (F) being the most relevant for anti-cancer activity. In this investigation, six analogues of the 26[F] peptide were synthesized in which the 26th position was replaced by non-natural hydrophobic amino acids, finding that some modifications increased the resistance to proteolytic degradation exerted by trypsin or pepsin. Additionally, these modifications increased the cytotoxic effect against breast cancer cells and generated cell death mediated by apoptosis pathways, activating caspases 8 and 9, and did not compromise the integrity of the cytoplasmic membrane. Finally, it was found that the modified peptides have a broad spectrum of action, since they also have a cytotoxic effect against the HeLa human cervical cancer cell line. Peptide 26[F] was inoculated in mice by ip administration and the lethal dose 50 (LD50) was between 70 and 140 mg kg-1. While for the 26[1-Nal]: (RRWQWR-1-Nal-KKLG)2-K-Ahx peptide, a dose-response test was performed, and the survival rate was 100%. These results suggested that these peptides are safe in this animal model and could be considered as promissory to develop a treatment against breast cancer.

RESUMO

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is one of the top ten threats to public health, as reported by the World Health Organization (WHO). One of the causes of the growing AMR problem is the lack of new therapies and/or treatment agents; consequently, many infectious diseases could become uncontrollable. The need to discover new antimicrobial agents that are alternatives to the existing ones and that allow mitigating this problem has increased, due to the rapid and global expansion of AMR. Within this context, both antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) and cyclic macromolecules, such as resorcinarenes, have been proposed as alternatives to combat AMR. Resorcinarenes present multiple copies of antibacterial compounds in their structure. These conjugate molecules have exhibited antifungal and antibacterial properties and have also been used in anti-inflammatory, antineoplastic, and cardiovascular therapies, as well as being useful in drug and gene delivery systems. In this study, it was proposed to obtain conjugates that contain four copies of AMP sequences over a resorcinarene core. Specifically, obtaining (peptide)4-resorcinarene conjugates derived from LfcinB (20-25): RRWQWR and BF (32-34): RLLR was explored. First, the synthesis routes that allowed obtaining: (a) alkynyl-resorcinarenes and (b) peptides functionalized with the azide group were established. These precursors were used to generate (c) (peptide)4-resorcinarene conjugates by azide-alkyne cycloaddition CuAAC, a kind of click chemistry. Finally, the conjugates' biological activity was evaluated: antimicrobial activity against reference strains and clinical isolates of bacteria and fungi, and the cytotoxic activity over erythrocytes, fibroblast, MCF-7, and HeLa cell lines. Our results allowed establishing a new synthetic route, based on click chemistry, for obtaining macromolecules derived from resorcinarenes functionalized with peptides. Moreover, it was possible to identify promising antimicrobial chimeric molecules that may lead to advances in the development of new therapeutic agents.

RESUMO

Breast cancer is one of the main causes of premature death in women; current treatments have low selectivity, generating strong physical and psychological sequelae. The palindromic peptide R-1-R (RWQWRWQWR) has cytotoxic activity against different cell lines derived from cancer and selectivity against noncancerous cells. To determine if changes in the charge/length of this peptide increase its activity, six peptides were obtained by SPPS, three of them with addition of Arg at the N, C-terminal or both and three with deletion of Arg at the N, C-terminal or both. The cytotoxic and selective activities were evaluated against MCF-7, MDA-MB-231, and MCF-12 cell lines and fibroblast primary cell culture, evidencing that the RR-1-R peptide with the inclusion of Arg in the N-terminal end maintained selectivity and increased cytotoxicity against lines derived from breast cancer. The effect of this addition regarding the type of induced cell death was evaluated by flow cytometry, showing very low rates of necrosis and a significant majority of apoptotic events with activation of both Caspase 8 and Caspase 9. This work allowed us to find a modification that generates a peptide with greater cytotoxic effects and can be considered a promising molecule for other approaches to improve anticancer peptides.

RESUMO

The application of multiple omics technologies in biomedical cohorts has the potential to reveal patient-level disease characteristics and individualized response to treatment. However, the scale and heterogeneous nature of multi-modal data makes integration and inference a non-trivial task. We developed a deep-learning-based framework, multi-omics variational autoencoders (MOVE), to integrate such data and applied it to a cohort of 789 people with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes with deep multi-omics phenotyping from the DIRECT consortium. Using in silico perturbations, we identified drug-omics associations across the multi-modal datasets for the 20 most prevalent drugs given to people with type 2 diabetes with substantially higher sensitivity than univariate statistical tests. From these, we among others, identified novel associations between metformin and the gut microbiota as well as opposite molecular responses for the two statins, simvastatin and atorvastatin. We used the associations to quantify drug-drug similarities, assess the degree of polypharmacy and conclude that drug effects are distributed across the multi-omics modalities.

RESUMO

The quantification of entropy in images is a topic of interest that has had different applications in the field of agronomy, product generation and medicine. Some algorithms have been proposed for the quantification of the irregularity present in an image; however, the challenges to overcome in the computational cost involved in large images and the reliable measurements in small images are still topics of discussion. In this research we propose an algorithm, EspEn Graph, which allows the quantification and graphic representation of the irregularity present in an image, revealing the location of the places where there are more or less irregular textures in the image. EspEn is used to calculate entropy because it presents reliable and stable measurements for small size images. This allows an image to be subdivided into small sections to calculate the entropy in each section and subsequently perform the conversion of values to graphically show the regularity present in an image. In conclusion, the EspEn Graph returns information on the spatial regularity that an image with different textures has and the average of these entropy values allows a reliable measure of the general entropy of the image.

Introduction: Cerebral palsy (CP) causes an alteration of muscle tone and balance that may lead to paralytic hip dislocation (PHD), especially in the most severely affected patients. Objective: To describe the clinical and radiological outcomes of patients with CP who underwent surgical treatment of PHD at the Instituto Roosevelt. Methodology: Retrospective observational study performed on 92 patients aged 4 to 18 years with CP and PHD operated on between 2010 and 2014. Bivariate analyses were performed to compare clinical and radiological findings before and after the surgery to correct PHD using McNemar's test, Student's t-test, and Mann-Whitney U-test. Results: The mean age was 7.45 years, 84.8% of the patients had spastic CP, and 59.8% were classified at level V of the Gross Motor Function Classification System. A total of 155 surgeries were performed in the 92 patients, the most frequent procedures being closed reduction and pelvic, femoral varus, and femoral derotation osteotomies. After surgery, pain, and difficulty in personal care, sitting and hip abduction decreased significantly (p<0.001). In addition, statistical differences were found between preoperative and postoperative radiological indices and angles. Conclusion: Although a significant improvement was found in the clinical and radiological outcomes evaluated, reconstructive and salvage procedures predominated over preventive ones, thus making it necessary to strengthen follow-up and prevention programs for PHD and its complications in the institution in order to reduce morbidity in patients with CP

RESUMO

An epoxy treatment was applied to a pipeline used to convey advanced treated recycled water from a purification facility to a recharge site. The epoxy treatment was applied to prevent further deterioration (corrosion) of the interior cement mortar lining (CML). A soil column study was conducted to evaluate the effect of the epoxy liner on the clogging potential of water before and after conveyance. The clogging potential was represented by differences in the column's relative hydraulic conductivity and water quality, between the treatment plant and injection site, before and after epoxy lining. Hydraulic conductivity of columns at the injection well site declined rapidly before epoxy and improved considerably after epoxy application. Total suspended solids (TSS) and cellular adenosine triphosphate (cATP) median concentrations improved significantly. Before epoxy, TSS increased with pipeline transit from 0.005 to 0.053 (mg/L) compared with 0.009 mg/L after epoxy. Before epoxy, cATP increased from 0.14 to 1.6 pg/ml across pipeline transit compared with 0.37 pg/ml after epoxy. Aluminum and nitrate followed similar trends. Results indicate that epoxy liner reduced the clogging potential of high purity recycled water, likely due to a decrease in particle and biomass load (clogging constituents) accumulated during pipeline transit. PRACTITIONER POINTS: Clogging potential of advanced treated recycled water increases with pipeline transit. Epoxy lining the pipeline used for conveyance reduces the particulate and microbial loading of the highly purified water. Applying epoxy to pipelines used to convey advanced treated recycled water has the dual benefit of infrastructure protection and improving water quality. Reducing particle and microbial load in the advanced treated recycled water can reduce maintenance frequencies and elongate production periods for MAR applications.

RESUMO

Using the van Deemter model, the efficiency of three stationary phase systems in the analysis of a mixture of synthetic peptides was evaluated: (i) monolithic, (ii) packed, and (iii) core-shell columns, and it was shown that the efficiency of the monolithic column is superior to the others, specifically using it, the lowest values of H min (0.03 and 0.1 mm) were obtained, and additionally its efficiency was not significantly affected by increasing the flow. Using the concept of the gradient retention factor (k*), a method for chromatographic separation of a peptide complex mixture was designed, implemented, and optimized and then transferred from a packed column to a monolithic one. The results showed that it was possible to separate all components of the mixture using both evaluated columns; moreover, the analysis time was reduced from 70 to 10 min, conserving the critical pair resolution (1.4), by the transfer method using the k* concept. The method developed was tested against a mixture of doping peptides, showing that this method is efficient for separating peptides of various natures. This investigation is very useful for the development of methods for the analysis of complex peptide mixtures since it provides a systematic approach that can be extrapolated to different types of columns and instrumentation.

Composite materials based on titania nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) and three metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) called MIL-53 (Fe) ((Fe (III) (OH) (1,4-BDC)), MILs (Materials Institute Lavoisier)), MIL-100 (Fe) (Fe3O(H2O)2OH(BTC)2), and Fe-BTC (iron-benzenetricarboxylate) with different percentages of TiO2 NPs (0.5, 1, and 2.5% wt.) were synthesized using the solvothermal method and used as photocatalytic materials in the degradation of two dyes (Orange II and Reactive Black 5 (RB5)). The pristine and composite materials were characterized with X-ray diffraction, Raman, UV-Vis and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy techniques. The 2.5TiO2/MIL-100 composite material showed the best results for the degradation of both dyes (Reactive Black 5 and Orange II dye, 99% and 99.5% degradation in 105 and 150 min, respectively). The incorporation of TiO2 NPs into MOFs can decrease the recombination of the change carrier in the MOF, increasing the photocatalytic activity of a pristine MOF. Results therefore indicated that the synthesized MOF nanocomposites have good potential for wastewater treatment.

Abstract Introduction: Stress in the LGB community is associated with their sexual orientation, violence or discrimination, stressful events which are different from those reported by heterosexual people. The literature reports a relationship between the level of stress and mental health problems, of greater intensity and frequency in the LGB population. Objective: The purpose was to identify stressful situations, coping strategies and associated emotions in the LGB community. Method: A descriptive study was carried out with a non-experimental cross-sectional design, through non-probabilistic sampling, with the participation of 272 men and women aged 14 to 56 years. The Questionnaire of Emotions, Stress and Coping of Vega et al. (2012). Results: Homosexual, bisexual and lesbian participants agree in first reporting situations of communicating their sexual orientation, the remaining situations are school, work and discrimination for belonging to the LGB community. Participants use action-focused and emotion-focused coping strategies in similar proportions (48 % 50 %). Emotions associated with stressful situations are anxiety, fear, shame, guilt. In pleasant situations they also report negative emotions. Conclusions: The type of stressful situations are different in these populations because they more frequently face events related to discrimination or confrontation due to their sexual orientation. Information is provided on what and how situations that generate stress in the LGB population are coped with. It is suggested to generate cognitive behavioral interventions for emotional regulation and effective coping.
