OBJECTIVES: To describe, in a naturalistic setting, the impact of the early use of LAI-AP on functional outcomes of early psychosis patients as compared to oral antipsychotics (OAP). METHODS: Longitudinal prospective 3-year naturalistic study of all consecutive admissions (n = 416) to two Early intervention services (EIS) for psychosis comparing baseline characteristics and the evolution of global functioning, occupation (work and studies), and living arrangements autonomy according to the route of administration of the antipsychotic medication. The cohort was divided into four groups: LAI-AP first (started on LAI-AP and later received OAP), OAP first, LAI-AP only, and OAP only. RESULTS: Global assessment of functioning (GAF) improved in all groups, but our mixed-effect model did not show any significant association between the route of administration and the GAF outcome. The LAI-AP only group was significantly less likely to have extreme residential instability at 3 years than the other groups despite its highest proportion of homeless youth and their poor prognostic factors at baseline. CONCLUSIONS: Our naturalistic study suggests a significant protective effect of LAI-AP on extreme residential instability for the most vulnerable patients, but no impact of the first AP administration route on other functional outcomes was observed at 3 years of follow-up. Key pointsLong-acting injectable antipsychotics seem promising to avoid extreme residential instability in early psychosis.Global assessment of functioning (GAF) improved in all groups.There was no significant association between the first route of administration and global functionning.

Quercetin is a flavonol ubiquitously present in fruits and vegetables that shows a potential therapeutic use in non-transmissible chronic diseases, such as cancer and diabetes. Although this phytochemical has shown promising health benefits, the molecular mechanism behind this compound is still unclear. Interestingly, quercetin displays toxic properties against phylogenetically distant organisms such as bacteria and eukaryotic cells, suggesting that its molecular target resides on a highly conserved pathway. The cytotoxicity of quercetin could be explained by energy depletion occasioned by mitochondrial respiration impairment and its concomitant pleiotropic effect. Thereby, the molecular basis of quercetin cytotoxicity could shed light on potential molecular mechanisms associated with its health benefits. Nonetheless, the evidence supporting this hypothesis is still lacking. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate whether quercetin supplementation affects mitochondrial respiration and whether this is related to quercetin cytotoxicity. Saccharomyces cerevisiae was used as a study model to assess the effect of quercetin on energetic metabolism. Herein, we provide evidence that quercetin supplementation: (1) decreased the exponential growth of S. cerevisiae in a glucose-dependent manner; (2) affected diauxic growth in a similar way to antimycin A (complex III inhibitor of electron transport chain); (3) suppressed the growth of S. cerevisiae cultures supplemented with non-fermentable carbon sources (glycerol and lactate); (4) promoted a glucose-dependent inhibition of the basal, maximal, and ATP-linked respiration; (5) diminished complex II and IV activities. Altogether, these data indicate that quercetin disturbs mitochondrial respiration between the ubiquinone pool and cytochrome c, and this phenotype is associated with its cytotoxic properties.

A multiplex PCR method was developed for the simultaneous detection of murine norovirus (MNV-1) as a surrogate for human norovirus (HuNoV) GI and GII, Salmonella spp., Shigella spp., and Shiga toxin producing Escherichia coli (STEC) in fresh produce. The toxicity of the glycine buffer on bacterial pathogens viability was evaluated. The growth of each of the three pathogens (previously stressed) was evaluated at 35 and 41.5 °C in modified buffered peptone water (mBPW) and trypticase soy broth (TSB), supplemented with vancomycin, novobiocin and brilliant green at two concentration levels. The selected conditions for simultaneous enrichment were: 41.5 °C/mBPW/supplemented with 8 ppm vancomycin, 0.6 ppm novobiocin and 0.2 ppm brilliant green. The pathogens and aerobic plate count (APC) growth was evaluated in the enrichment of lettuce, coriander, strawberry and blackberry under the best enrichment conditions. Starting from 1 to 10 CFU/mL, Salmonella reached from 7.63 to 8.91, Shigella 6.81 to 7.76 and STEC 7.43 to 9.27 log CFU/mL. The population reached for the APC was 5.11-6.56 log CFU/mL. Simultaneous detection by PCR was done using designed primers targeting invA, ipaH, stx1 and stx2 genes, and MNV-1. The detection sensitivity was 10-100 PFU for the MNV-1 and 1-10 CFU for each pathogenic bacteria. This protocol takes 6 h for MNV-1 and 24 h for Salmonella spp., Shigella spp., and STEC detection from the same food portion. In total, 200 samples were analyzed from retail markets from Queretaro, Mexico. Two strawberry samples were positive for HuNoV GI and one lettuce sample was positive for STEC. In conclusion, the method developed in this study is capable of detecting HuNoV GI and GII, Salmonella spp., Shigella spp and STEC from the same fresh produce sample.

Blue mold caused by Penicillium expansum is one of the most significant postharvest diseases of apples. Some microorganisms associated with the surface of ripening apples possess the ability to inhibit the growth of P. expansum. However, the existing literature about their colonization in the stages before ripening is not explored in depth. This study aims to characterize the antagonistic capacity of bacterial populations from five fruit development stages of 'Royal Gala' apples. The results have shown that the density of the bacterial populations decreases throughout the ripening stages of fruit (from 1.0 × 105 to 1.1 × 101 cfu/cm2). A total of 25 bacterial morphotypes (corresponding to five genera identified by 16S RNA) were differentiated in which Bacillus stood out as a predominant genus. In the in vitro antagonism tests, 10 Bacillus strains (40%) inhibited the mycelial growth of P. expansum from 30.1% to 60.1%, while in fruit bioassays, the same strains reduced the fruit rot ranging from 12% to 66%. Moreover, the bacterial strains with antagonistic activity increased in the ripening fruit stage. B. subtilis subsp. spiziennii M24 obtained the highest antagonistic activity (66.9% of rot reduction). The matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization- time of flight mass spectrometry analysis revealed that bacteria with antagonistic activity produce antifungal lipopeptides from iturin and fengycin families.

Early relapse is frequent in the first-episode psychosis (FEP), often because of poor adherence to medication. Previous studies have shown positive impacts of long-acting injectable antipsychotics (LAI-AP) on relapse rates, while others have discerned no differences. This study describes the impact of early LAI-AP utilization on relapse and rehospitalization rates in FEP. A three-year, longitudinal, prospective, naturalistic study of all admissions of psychosis patients for early intervention services was conducted. Four hundred sixteen patients were subdivided into four groups according to the route of antipsychotic administration. Patients who received LAI-AP as their first treatment modality were more likely to exhibit poor prognostic factors at baseline. However, their relapse rate over time was similar to those with good prognostic factors at baseline who only received oral antipsychotics (OAP). Patients who were initially prescribed OAP and eventually switched to LAI-AP were more likely to relapse and to be rehospitalized, even if they manifested better functioning at baseline than those started on LAI-AP. Patients with poor prognosis in the early stage of their disease seem to benefit from early prescription of LAI-AP which can reduce and delay relapses and rehospitalizations. Because they are often still at school or at work at the time of their first episode of psychosis, relapse prevention seems particularly relevant to avoid functional deterioration.

AIM: Substance use disorder (SUD) is highly prevalent among patients with first-episode psychosis (FEP) and associated with poor adherence and worst treatment outcomes. Although relapses are frequent in FEP, current literature on long-acting injectable antipsychotics (LAI-AP) use in FEP is scarce and studies often exclude patients with SUD. OBJECTIVES: To determine the impact of LAI-AP as first-line treatment on psychotic relapses or rehospitalizations in FEP patients with comorbid SUD (FEP-SUD). METHODS: This is a naturalistic, longitudinal, 3-year prospective and retrospective study on 237 FEP-SUD admitted in two EIS in Montreal, between 2005 and 2012. The patients were divided on the basis of first-line medication introduced, either oral antipsychotics (OAP, n = 206) or LAI-AP (n = 31). Baseline characteristics were compared using χ² test and analysis of variance, and Kaplan-Meier survival analysis was performed on relapse and rehospitalization. RESULTS: Compared to the OAP group, patients in the LAI-AP group presented worse prognostic factors (eg, history of homelessness). Despite this, the LAI-AP group presented a lower relapse rate (67.7% vs 76.7%), higher relapse-free survival time (694 vs 447 days, P = 0.008 in Kaplan-Meier analysis), and trends for reduced rehospitalization rates (48.4% vs 57.3%) and hospitalization-free survival time (813 vs 619 days, P = 0.065 Kaplan-Meier analysis). Of those receiving OAP as first-line, 41.3% were eventually switched to LAI-AP and displayed worst outcome in relapse and rehospitalization. CONCLUSION: LAI-AP should be strongly considered as first-line treatment of FEP-SUD patients since this pharmacological option reduces the risk of relapse and rehospitalization even in the individuals with poor prognostic factors.

BACKGROUND: Fruits and vegetables have been associated with outbreaks of disease in different countries. The apple (Malus domestica Borkh) and its products have been reported as vehicles for illness outbreaks. To create strategies to prevent pathogen survival it is necessary to understand how pathogens persist on fruit. This paper assessed the ability of Salmonella to attach to, and to colonize, the surface of three apple cultivars: 'Rayada', 'Golden Delicious' and 'Red Delicious'. RESULTS: Salmonella was able to colonize and generate biofilms on the surface of apples with a soil suspension as the only source of nutrients. Significant differences in Salmonella attachment were seen among the three cultivars of apple studied. Using SEM, attached cells and the formation of exopolysaccharides and biofilms on the three apple cultivars were demonstrated. In all cultivars, the development of Salmonella was only seen in apples stored at 15 and 22 °C, with average increases in the population of 1.4 and 2.3 Log CFU/apple, respectively. At 5 °C, Salmonella growth was inhibited. CONCLUSION: Salmonella can colonize apple surfaces under environmental conditions (relative humidity, temperature and nutrients) occurring in primary apple production. © 2018 Society of Chemical Industry.

Despite the importance of strain compatibility, most of the enological strain selection studies are carried out separately on yeasts and lactic acid bacteria (LAB). In this study, the enological traits and interactions between native yeasts and LAB were studied. The H2 S and acetic acid production, growth rates at 8 °C, killer phenotypes, flocculation, and tolerance to must and wine inhibitors were determined for 25 Saccharomyces yeasts. The ability to grow under two wine-like conditions was also determined in 37 LAB (Oenococcus oeni and Lactobacillus plantarum). The yeast-LAB compatibility of selected strains was tested in a sequential scheme. Finally, microvinification trials were performed using two strains from each group to determine the efficiencies and quality parameters. The phenotypic characterization by the K-means and hierarchical clusters indicated a correlation between flocculation and optical density increase in simulated must and wine medium (r = -0.415) and grouped the prominent yeasts SR19, SR26, and N05 as moderately flocculent, killer, acid producing, and highly tolerant strains. Among the LAB, L. plantarum FU39 grew 230% more than the rest. With regard to interactions, LAB growth stimulation (14-fold on average) due to the previous action of yeasts, particularly of SR19, was observed. The final quality of all wines was similar, but yeast SR19 performed a faster and more efficient fermentation than did N05, Also L. plantarum FU39 fermented faster than did O. oeni VC32. The use of quantitative data, and multivariate analyses allowed an integrative approach to the selection of a compatible and efficient pair of enological yeast-LAB strains. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: An alternative scheme is proposed for the joint selection of yeast and lactic acid bacteria strains, which allows us to foresee the interactions that may occur between them during winemaking. The kinetic parameters, turbidimetrically measured and analyzed by multivariate methods, simplify the detection of outstanding selectable microorganisms. This methodology can be implemented at any cellar or even any fermentative industry that aims to select compatible yeast and lactic acid bacteria.

Bacillus sp. strain MA04 a plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) showed hemolytic activity on blood agar plates, and the supernatant from liquid culture in nutrient broth at 24 h exhibited emulsification activity, suggesting the production of biosurfactants. In antagonist assays, the supernatant showed antifungal activity against phytopathogenic fungi such as Penicillium expansum, Fusarium stilboides, Sclerotium rolfsii y Rhizoctonia solani, finding a reduction of mycelial growth of all fungi tested, ranging from 35 to 69%, this activity was increased with time of culture, accomplishing percentages of inhibition up to 85% with supernatants obtained at 72 h. Then, the crude biorsurfactant (CB) was isolated from the supernatant in order to assay its antagonistic effect on the phytopathogens previously tested, finding an increase in the inhibition up to 97% at 500 mg/L of CB. The composition of CB was determined by infrared spectroscopy, identifying various functional groups related to lipopeptides, which were purified by high-performance liquid chromatography and analyzed by MALDI-TOF/TOF-MS, revealing a mixture of fengycins A and B whose high antifungal activity is been widely recognized. These results show that PGPR Bacillus sp. MA04 could also contribute to plant health status through the production of metabolites with antimicrobial activity.

Multiple outbreaks related to Salmonella in tomatoes require an evaluation of the risk associated with cherry tomatoes due to the increase in its production, consumption, and marketing in Mexico's central region. The purpose of this study was to determine the microbial quality of cherry tomatoes obtained from two retail sale points (supermarkets and local markets). Cherry tomato samples (333) were collected from four supermarkets and from four local markets, and the contents of aerobic plate count, molds and yeasts, total coliforms, and Escherichia coli were quantified; the presence of Salmonella was simultaneously determined. The median values of the microbial populations were obtained, and the data were analyzed per the sampling site by using the Wilcoxon and Kruskal-Wallis tests. The median of aerobic plate count content in tomatoes obtained from supermarkets ranged between 2.2 and 4.4 log CFU/g, and in markets from 2.9 to 4.8 log CFU/g. For molds and yeasts, the tomatoes from supermarkets (2.0 to 4.1 log CFU/g) and markets (1.5 to 4.5 log CFU/g) showed similar contents. Regardless of the sampling site, the values of total coliforms were very low, ranging from 1.0 to 1.8 log CFU/g. E. coli was detected in 5.4 and 20.1% of samples from supermarkets and markets, respectively; in both sites, the content was low (0.3 to 5.8 most probable number per g). The incidence of Salmonella was 14.1% in supermarkets and 7.8% in local markets. The results obtained from this investigation highlight the elevated risk for consumer health associated with the ingestion of cherry tomatoes.

Abstract: Poor adherence to antipsychotics, which affects outcome, is frequent in first episode psychosis (FEP). Most randomized studies demonstrate no superiority of long-acting injectable antipsychotics (LAI-AP) over oral antipsychotics (OAP). However, participants in these studies represent a minority of patients who may benefit from LAI-AP. Mirror and naturalistic studies generally demonstrate efficacy of LAI-AP on more representative samples, but studies on FEP are scarce. Aim: To describe LAI-AP's utilization and impact on FEP outcome in a naturalistic setting. Methods: A 3-year longitudinal prospective and retrospective descriptive study of all consecutive admissions from two Early Intervention Services for psychosis (EIS) in Montréal, Canada, compared the characteristics and evolution of patients who received LAI-AP for at least 12 months to those who received OAP only. Results: From 375 FEP patients included, 26,7% received LAI-AP during their follow-up. They were more likely to have poor prognostic factors (male gender, lower premorbid functioning, homelessness, substance use disorder and schizophrenia spectrum diagnoses). Despite a more severe illness and lower functioning in the LAI-AP group, at admission and study endpoint, clinical and functional improvements were observed. Conclusion: Early prescription of LAI-AP seems beneficial in FEP with poor prognostic factors.

AIM: Immigration is a risk factor for psychosis emergence, and previous studies show that immigrants are less likely to engage in treatment for psychosis. However, the literature on outcome is scant and heterogeneous. This study was designed to compare first-generation (FGI) and second-generation immigrants (SGI) to non-immigrants' symptomatic and functional outcomes 2 years after a first-episode psychosis (FEP). METHODS: A 2-year prospective longitudinal study of 223 FEP patients between 18 and 30 years took place in two early intervention services (EIS) in Montreal, Canada. RESULTS: Forty-two per cent of the sample were immigrants (FGI (n = 56), SGI (n = 38)). Compared with non-immigrants, immigrants had similar symptomatic and functioning profiles at baseline, 1 and 2 years, except that fewer SGI had a history of homelessness and more were living with their families. FGI were less likely to have a substance use disorder but more likely to pursue their studies and to present depressive symptoms. CONCLUSIONS: Even if immigrants are known to be at greater risk of developing psychosis, probably secondary to stress related to immigration, their symptomatic and functional outcomes, once engaged in EIS treatment, are similar to or sometimes better than non-immigrants' outcomes. Because immigrants tend to be less engaged in their follow-up, understanding why they disengage from treatment is crucial to develop better therapeutic approaches to better engage them as EIS treatment can improve their outcomes effectively.

Several studies have observed that a conventional PCR protocol using primers LM1 and LM2 for the identification of gene hlyA Listeria monocytogenes generates non-specific PCR amplifications and false positives. For this reason in this study, we provide a modified PCR protocol that improves the specificity of the LM1 and LM2 primers.

Noonan syndrome (NS) is a common genetic syndrome associated with gain of function variants in genes in the Ras/MAPK pathway. The phenotype of NS has been well characterized in populations of European descent with less attention given to other groups. In this study, individuals from diverse populations with NS were evaluated clinically and by facial analysis technology. Clinical data and images from 125 individuals with NS were obtained from 20 countries with an average age of 8 years and female composition of 46%. Individuals were grouped into categories of African descent (African), Asian, Latin American, and additional/other. Across these different population groups, NS was phenotypically similar with only 2 of 21 clinical elements showing a statistically significant difference. The most common clinical characteristics found in all population groups included widely spaced eyes and low-set ears in 80% or greater of participants, short stature in more than 70%, and pulmonary stenosis in roughly half of study individuals. Using facial analysis technology, we compared 161 Caucasian, African, Asian, and Latin American individuals with NS with 161 gender and age matched controls and found that sensitivity was equal to or greater than 94% for all groups, and specificity was equal to or greater than 90%. In summary, we present consistent clinical findings from global populations with NS and additionally demonstrate how facial analysis technology can support clinicians in making accurate NS diagnoses. This work will assist in earlier detection and in increasing recognition of NS throughout the world.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: Apneic oxygenation has been advocated for the prevention of hypoxemia during emergency endotracheal intubation. Because of conflicting results from recent trials, the efficacy of apneic oxygenation remains unclear. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to investigate the effect of apneic oxygenation on the incidence of clinically significant hypoxemia during emergency endotracheal intubation. METHODS: MEDLINE, EMBASE, and PubMed databases were searched without language and time restrictions for studies of apneic oxygenation performed in a critical care setting. Meta-analysis was conducted with a random-effect model, and according to intention-to-treat allocation wherever applicable. Subgroup analyses were performed to ensure the robustness of findings across various clinical outcomes. RESULTS: Eight studies (n=1953) were included in the meta-analysis. The pooled absolute risk of clinically significant hypoxemia was 27.6% in the usual care group and 19.1% in the apneic oxygenation group, without any heterogeneity across studies (I2=0%; p=0.42). Apneic oxygenation reduced the relative risk of hypoxemia by 30% (95% confidence interval 0.59 to 0.82). There was a trend toward lower mortality in the apneic oxygenation group (relative risk of death 0.77; 95% confidence interval 0.59 to 1.02). CONCLUSION: Apneic oxygenation significantly reduces the incidence of hypoxemia during emergency endotracheal intubation. These findings support the inclusion of apneic oxygenation in everyday clinical practice.

A comparison between plate counting (PC) and dynamic light scattering (DLS) is reported. PC is the standard technique to determine bacterial population as a function of time; however, this method has drawbacks, such as the cumbersome preparation and handling of samples, as well as the long time required to obtain results. Alternative methods based on optical density are faster, but do not distinguish viable from non-viable cells. These inconveniences are overcome by using DLS. Two different bacteria strains were considered: Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. DLS was performed at two different illuminating conditions: continuous and intermittent. By the increment of particle size as a function of time, it was possible to observe cell division and the formation of aggregates containing very few bacteria. The scattered intensity profiles showed the lag phase and the transition to the exponential phase of growth, providing a quantity proportional to viable bacteria concentration. The results revealed a clear and linear correlation in both lag and exponential phase, between the Log10(colony-forming units/mL) from PC and the Log10 of the scattered intensity Is from DLS. These correlations provide a good support to use DLS as an alternative technique to determine bacterial population.

Native lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are capable of growing during winemaking, thereby strongly affecting wine quality. The species of LAB present in musts, wines during malolactic fermentation (MLF), and barrels/filters were investigated in wineries from the emerging wine region of Queretaro, México using multiplex PCR and culture. The resistance to wine-like conditions (WLC): ethanol (10, 12, and 13%), SO2 (30 mg⋅l-1), and low pH (3.5) of native LAB strains was also studied. Five species were detected within 61 samples obtained: Oenococcus oeni, Lactobacillus plantarum, Pediococcus parvulus, Lactobacillus hilgardi, and Lactobacillus brevis. Four species (excepting L. brevis) were found in must; O. oeni and P. parvulus were ubiquitous in wine and L. plantarum and L. brevis were mainly present at the initial stage of MLF, while L. hilgardii was mostly detected at the advanced stage. Furthermore, some species detected in barrel/filter, prove them to be hazardous reservoirs. From 822 LAB isolates, only 119 resisted WLC with 10% ethanol; the number of strains able to grow in WLC with 13% ethanol decreased approximately by 50%, O. oeni being the most versatile species with 65% of resistant isolates, while Lactobacillus spp. and P. parvulus were the most strongly affected, especially those recovered from barrel/filter, with less than 10% of resistant isolates. This study evidences the presence of local strains able to be used as starter cultures, and also enabled the assessment of the risks derived from the presence of spoilage LAB strains resistant to WLC.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is an autosomal recessive neuromuscular disorder, considered one of the leading causes of infant mortality. It is caused by mutations in the SMN1 gene. A highly homologous copy of this gene named SMN2 and other neighbouring genes, SERF1A and NAIP, are considered phenotypic modifiers of the disease. In recent years, notable advances have been made in SMA research regarding evaluation, prognosis, and therapeutic options. Thus, genotype-phenotype studies in SMA are important to stratify patients for motor function tests and for envisaged clinical trials. The aim of this study was to provide clinical and molecular data of a series of Argentinean children with SMA to establish a comprehensive genotype-phenotype correlation. METHODS: 144 Argentinean children with SMA (56 children with type I, 58 with type II, and 30 with type III) were evaluated. The copy number of SMN2, SERF1A, and NAIP genes was established using MLPA (Multiplex Ligation-dependent Probe Amplification) and then correlated with the patients clinical subtypes. To improve clinical characterization we considered the initial symptoms that prompted the consultation, age of acquisition of motor abilities to independent walking and age at loss of gait. We also evaluated clinical and molecular features of sibling pairs in seven families. RESULTS: A strong correlation was observed between the SMN2 copy number and SMA phenotype while SERF1A and NAIP copy number showed a moderate correlation. We observed intra- and inter-family differences among the SMA types. CONCLUSION: This first genotype-phenotype correlation study in Argentinean SMA children provides data to improve patient stratification and define more adequate follow-up parameters.

A combination of different hurdles, such as mild heat (54 ℃ for 10 min) or pulsed electric field (25 pulses; 25 kV/cm; 3.35 kJ/cm per pulse) treatments and essential oils constituents (carvacrol, citral, and (+)-limonene), to reduce spoiling bacteria and yeasts in apple juice was evaluated. For this purpose, the heat and pulsed electric field resistances of five strains of Leuconostoc spp. and five Saccharomyces spp. strains were assayed, achieving different inactivation levels for each treatment and strain. For instance, Leuconostoc fallax 74, the most heat-resistant strain, was the second-most sensitive strain to pulsed electric field. The most resistant strains were exposed to combined processes of heat or pulsed electric field and 0.2 µl/ml essential oils constituents. The combination of heat and essential oils constituents proved to be synergistic against both microorganisms in apple juice. The most effective was the combination of mild heat and carvacrol, which caused the inactivation of 99% of L. fallax 74 and 99.99% of Saccharomyces cerevisiae CECT 1172 cells. Therefore, this study shows the great potential of carvacrol, citral, and (+)-limonene in combined treatments with mild heat to achieve a higher degree of inactivation of spoiling microorganisms in apple juice, and thus, to extend its shelf life.

INTRODUCTION: Certain strains of Cronobacter sakazakii can cause serious invasive infections in children, mainly those <2 months old and fed with powdered infant formula (PIF). The infectious dose of C. sakazakii is unknown but evidence suggests that it is approximately 1000 colony forming units (CFU). PIF is currently considered safe if its end-product C. sakazakii level is <1 CFU/g. In this study, we determined the lag time, generation time (GT), and growth rate of five pooled C. sakazakii isolates to evaluate the factors affecting contamination levels in reconstituted PIF. METHODS: 1.71 log CFU/ml of C. sakazakii were inoculated into 100 and 3000 ml of reconstituted PIF and incubated at 22 and 35°C. Growth was evaluated over a 24-h period. ComBase was used for modeling. RESULTS: In 3000 ml, the growth rate was 0.45 ± 0.02 log CFU/h with a lag phase of 3 ± 0.05 h and GT of 0.67 h at 22°C, while the growth rate was 0.73 ± 0.01 log CFU/h with a lag phase of 0.45 ± 0.03 h and GT of 0.41 h at 35° C. CONCLUSION: Cronobacter sakazakii grows rapidly in reconstituted PIF, especially at 35° C.
