RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Establishing reference ranges for central airway parameters and exploring their influencing factors in Han Chinese non-smoking adults. METHODS: This prospective cross-sectional study was conducted on Han Chinese non-smoking adults who underwent chest CT scans at the Tongzhou Campus of Dongzhimen Hospital Affiliated with the Beijing University of Chinese Medicine between September 2022 and November 2022. The SYNAPSE 3D image analysis software was utilized, enabling the extraction of critical parameters such as central airway length, airway wall thickness (AWT), airway lumen area (ALA), and subcarinal angle (SCA). Pearson's correlation coefficient analysis and multiple linear regression analysis methods were employed to evaluate the relationship between central airway parameters and age, sex, weight, and height. RESULTS: The study encompassed 888 Han Chinese non-smoking adults, comprising 456 females and 432 males. Significant sex differences were noted in central airway length, AWT, and ALA, with measurements in males exceeding those in females (p < 0.01) with no significant difference in SCA. Correlation analyses unveiled relationships between central airway parameters and age, sex, weight, and height. During multiple linear regression analyses, no conclusive evidence emerged to demonstrate the independent or combined explanatory or predictive capacity of the aforementioned variables for central airway length and SCA. Although sex has a significant impact on AWT and ALA, its capability in explanation or prediction remains limited. The conclusions drawn from the primary analysis receive reinforcement from the outcomes of sensitivity analyses. CONCLUSION: Establishing the distribution range of central airway parameters in non-smoking Han Chinese adults. It observed significant sex differences in these parameters, except for the SCA. However, the study found that the predictive or explanatory power of age, sex, weight, and height for central airway parameters was either limited or non-significant.

RESUMO

There is an urgent need to develop novel and high-performance catalysts for chlorinated volatile organic compound oxidation as a co-benefit of NOx. In this work, HSiW/CeO2 was used for chlorobenzene (CB) oxidation as a co-benefit of NOx reduction and the inhibition mechanism of NH3 was explored. CB oxidation over HSiW/CeO2 primarily followed the Mars-van-Krevelen mechanism and the Eley-Rideal mechanism, and the CB oxidation rate was influenced by the concentrations of surface adsorbed CB, Ce4+ ions, lattice oxygen species, gaseous CB, and surface adsorbed oxygen species. NH3 not only strongly inhibited CB adsorption onto HSiW/CeO2, but also noticeably decreased the amount of lattice oxygen species; hence, NH3 had a detrimental effect on the Mars-van-Krevelen mechanism. Meanwhile, NH3 caused a decrease in the amount of oxygen species adsorbed on HSiW/CeO2, which hindered the Eley-Rideal mechanism of CB oxidation. Hence, NH3 significantly hindered CB oxidation over HSiW/CeO2. This suggests that the removal of NOx and CB over this catalyst operated more like a two-stage process rather than a synergistic one. Therefore, to achieve simultaneous NOx and CB removal, it would be more meaningful to focus on improving the performances of HSiW/CeO2 for NOx reduction and CB oxidation separately.

RESUMO

Magnetic FeSx was developed as a high-performance sorbent for selectively adsorbing Hg2+ from waste acids in smelters. However, further improvement of its ability for Hg2+ adsorption was extremely restricted due to the lack of reaction mechanisms and structure-activity relationships. In this study, the roles of FeS and FeS2 on magnetic FeSx for Hg2+ adsorption were investigated with alternate adsorption of Hg2+ without/with Cl-. The structure-activity relationship of magnetic FeSx for Hg2+ adsorption and the negative effect of acid erosion were elucidated using kinetic analysis. FeS can react with Hg2+ with 1:1 stoichiometric ratio to form HgS, while FeS2 can react with Hg2+ in the presence of Cl- with novel 1:3 stoichiometric ratio to form Hg3S2Cl2. The rate of magnetic FeSx for Hg2+ adsorption was related to the instantaneous amounts of FeS and threefold FeS2 on magnetic FeSx and the amount of Hg2+ adsorbed. Meanwhile, its capacity for Hg2+ adsorption was related to the initial sum of FeS amount and threefold FeS2 amount on the surface and their ratios by acid erosion. Then, magnetic FeSx-400 was devised with adsorption rate of 2.12 mg g-1 min-1 and capacity of 1092 mg g-1 to recover Hg2+ from waste acids for centralized control.

RESUMO

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have been widely studied in photocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction (CO2 RR). However, pristine COFs usually exhibit low catalytic efficiency owing to the fast recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes. In this study, we fabricated a stable COF-based composite (GO-COF-366-Co) by covalently anchoring COF-366-Co on the surface of graphene oxide (GO) for the photocatalytic CO2 reduction. Interestingly, in absolute acetonitrile (CH3 CN), GO-COF-366-Co shows a high selectivity of 94.4 % for the photoreduction of CO2 to formate, with a formate yield of 15.8 mmol/g, which is approximately four times higher than that using the pristine COF-366-Co. By contrast, in CH3 CN/H2 O (v : v=4 : 1), the main product for the photocatalytic CO2 reduction over GO-COF-366-Co is CO (96.1 %), with a CO yield as high as 52.2 mmol/g, which is also approximately four times higher than that using the pristine COF-366-Co. Photoelectrochemical experiments demonstrate the covalent bonding of COF-366-Co and GO to form the GO-COF-366-Co composite facilitates charge separation and transfer significantly, thereby accounting for the enhanced catalytic activity. In addition, theoretical calculations and in situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy reveal H2 O can stabilize the *COOH intermediate to further form a *CO intermediate via O-H(aq)⋅⋅⋅O(*COOH) hydrogen bonding, thus explaining the regulated photocatalytic performance.

RESUMO

Background: Acute necrotizing mediastinitis (ANM) is a severe infection of the mediastinal loose connective tissue. Traditionally, it has been treated with thoracotomy, but video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) is been increasingly used in patients with this condition. This study aimed to compare the outcomes of VATS and open thoracotomy in treating ANM. Methods: The medical records of patients with ANM who underwent surgery between March 2012 and April 2021 were retrieved. A retrospective screening was conducted based on clinical characteristics, bacterial pathogens, surgical approach, and outcomes. The patients were divided into a VATS group and an open thoracotomy (Open) group. The patient characteristics and surgical outcomes of the two groups were summarized and compared. Results: A total of 64 cases were enrolled in this study, including 48 in the VATS group (75%) and 16 in the Open group (25%). The most common site of infection was the neck (n=26, 40.6%). Streptococcus constellatus and Acinetobacter baumannii (A. baumannii) were the most frequently found pathogens in secretion culture. In sputum culture, the most common pathogens were Klebsiella pneumonia and A. baumannii. Postoperative outcomes, including blood transfusion (33.3% vs. 43.8%; P=0.45), duration of postoperative drainage {14 [1-47] vs. 17 [4-54] days; P=0.15}, length of antibiotic medication {14.5 [1-54] vs. 18 [4-54] days; P=0.29}, admission to intensive care unit (ICU) (87.5% vs. 75.0%; P=0.43), length of ICU stay {5 [1-58] vs. 8.5 [1-37] days; P=0.20}, postoperative hospital stay {17 [2-61] vs. 21 [5-56] days; P=0.22}, reoperation rate (12.5% vs. 6.25%; P=0.82), and mortality rate (14.6% vs. 12.5%; P>0.99) were comparable between the two groups. Conclusions: ANM treated by both the VATS and open approach had comparable outcomes. Therefore, VATS is a viable option for patients with ANM.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To investigate the expression of tissue-active protein kinase C receptor 1 (RACK1) and epithelin glycoprotein 40 (EGP40) in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) and their relationship with clinicopathological features and prognosis. METHODS: A total of 103 patients with OSCC who were admitted to Shangrao People's Hospital from January 2016 to February 2019 were prospectively selected as the research subjects. All patients underwent radical resection of OSCC and were followed up for 3 years. Immunohistochemistry was used to detect the positive expression levels of RACK1 and EGP40 in cancer tissues and adjacent tissues. The positive expression of RACK1 and EGP40 in cancer tissues and adjacent tissues were compared. The relationship between the positive expression level of RACK1 and EGP40 in cancer tissues of OSCC patients and clinicopathological parameters was analyzed. Factors affecting postoperative recurrence and metastasis in OSCC patients were analyzed. The relationship between the expression of RACK1 and EGP40 in cancer tissues and postoperative disease-free survival of OSCC patients was analyzed. SPSS 18.0 software package was used for statistical analysis of the data. RESULTS: The positive expression rate of RACK1 and EGP40 in cancer tissues was significantly higher than those in adjacent tissues (P<0.05). The positive expression rate of RACK1 and EGP40 in cancer tissues of OSCC patients with poorly differentiated, stage III, cervical lymph node metastasis, and infiltrating vessels was significantly higher than that in patients with moderate and high differentiation, stage II, no cervical lymph node metastasis, and no infiltrating vessels(P<0.05). The positive expression rate of RACK1 in cancer tissue of OSCC patients in T3 stage was significantly higher than that in T2 stage(P<0.05). Cox multivariate regression analysis showed pathological grade (RR=6.290, 95%CI: 2.588-15.287), cervical lymph node metastasis(RR=5.995, 95%CI: 2.467-14.571), RACK1 positive rate (RR=4.495, 95%CI: 1.850-10.925) and EGP40 positive rate (RR=4.559, 95%CI: 1.876-11.079) were factors affecting the recurrence and metastasis of OSCC patients after surgery(P<0.05). The disease-free survival curve of patients with negative expression of RACK1 was significantly better than that of patients with positive expression (P<0.05). The disease-free survival curve of patients with negative expression of EGP40 was significantly better than that of patients with positive expression (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The expression of RACK1 and EGP40 in cancer tissues of OSCC patients is related to clinicopathological parameters and prognosis. Patients with positive expression of RACK1 and EGP40 have a high risk of recurrence and metastasis after surgery.

RESUMO

Aberrant glycolytic reprogramming is involved in lung cancer progression by promoting the proliferation of non-small cell lung cancer cells. Paeonol, as a traditional Chinese medicine, plays a critical role in multiple cancer cell proliferation and inflammation. Acyl-CoA dehydrogenase (ACADM) is involved in the development of metabolic diseases. N6-methyladenosine (m6A) modification is important for the regulation of messenger RNA stability, splicing, and translation. Here, we investigated whether paeonol regulates the proliferation and glycolytic reprogramming via ACADM with m6A modification in A549 cells (human non-small cell lung cancer cells). Cell counting kit 8, 5-Bromo-2-deoxyuridine, 5-ethynyl-2'-deoxyuridine (EdU) incorporation, flow cytometry analysis, western blotting and seahorse XFe24 extracellular flux analyzer assays showed that paeonol had a significant inhibitory effect against A549 cell proliferation and glycolysis. Mechanistically, ACADM was a functional target of paeonol. We also showed that the m6A reader YTH domain containing 1 plays an important role in m6A-modified ACADM expression, which is negatively regulated by paeonol, and is involved in A549 cell proliferation and glycolytic reprogramming. These results indicated the central function of paeonol in regulating A549 cell glycolytic reprogramming and proliferation via m6A modification of ACADM.

RESUMO

The current sorbents used to remove Cr (VI) from electroplating wastewater are faced with some challenges including the difficulty in separating, regenerating, and safely disposing of adsorbed Cr species. To address these challenges, CuSx/TiO2 was developed to recover Cr (VI) from electroplating wastewater. CuSx/TiO2 had superior performance in removing Cr (VI), with the rate and capacity of approximately 9.36 mg g-1 h-1 and 68.8 mg g-1 at initial pH 4.0, respectively. Additionally, Cu2+ released from CuSx/TiO2 during Cr (VI) removal would come back to its external surface as the Cu(OH)2 precipitate at initial pH 4.0, which helped to prevent the generation of secondary pollution. The Cu(OH)2 precipitate would be decomposed into CuOx after calcination, which would then be transformed back into CuSx by re-sulfuration for regeneration. Hence, CuSx showed a magical induction effect on Cr (VI) recovery, and Cr (VI) from electroplating wastewater might be gradually enriched as Cr2O3 in the sandwich between CuSx and TiO2 through multiple regenerations and removals, which could be considered as a chromium ore resource for industrial applications when the amount of enriched Cr2O3 reached more than 30 wt%. Overall, CuSx/TiO2 showed great potential as a promising sorbent for Cr (VI) removal from electroplating wastewater.

RESUMO

The development of hierarchically porous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with high stability is desirable to expand their applications but remains challenging. Herein, an anionic sodalite-type microporous MOF (Yb-TTCA; TTCA3- = triphenylene-2,6,10-tricarboxylate) was synthesized, which shows outstanding catalytic activities for the cycloaddition of CO2 into cyclic carbonates. Moreover, the microporous Yb-TTCA can be transformed into a hierarchical micro- and mesoporous Yb-TTCA by water treatment with the mesopore sizes of 2 to 12 nm. The hierarchically porous Yb-TTCA (HP-Yb-TTCA) not only exhibits a high thermal stability up to 500 °C but also shows a high chemical stability in aqueous solutions with pH values ranging from 2 to 12. In addition, the HP-Yb-TTCA displays enhanced performance for the removal of organic dyes in comparison with microporous Yb-TTCA. This work provides a facile way to construct hierarchically porous MOF materials.

RESUMO

Background: Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS) is an inflammatory condition affecting the spine, which may lead to complications such as osteoporosis (OP). Many observational studies have demonstrated a close relationship with strong evidence between OP and AS. The combination of AS and OP is already an indisputable fact, but the exact mechanism of AS complicated with OP is unclear. To better prevent and treat OP in patients with AS, it is necessary to understand the specific mechanism of OP in these patients. In addition, there is a study showing that OP is a risk factor for AS, but the causal relationship between them is not yet clear. Therefore, we conducted a bidirectional Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to determine whether there is a direct causal effect between AS and OP and to investigate the co-inherited genetic information between the two. Methods: Bone mineral density (BMD) was used as a phenotype for OP. The AS dataset was taken from the IGAS consortium and included people of European ancestry (9,069 cases and 13,578 controls). BMD datasets were obtained from the GEFOS consortium, a large GWAS meta-analysis study, and the UK Biobank and were categorized based on site (total body (TB): 56,284 cases; lumbar spine (LS): 28,498 cases; femoral neck (FN): 32,735 cases; forearm (FA): 8,143 cases; and heel: 265,627 cases) and age (0-15: 11,807 cases; 15-30: 4,180 cases; 30-45: 10,062 cases; 45-60: 18,062 cases; and over 60: 22,504 cases). To obtain the casual estimates, the inverse variant weighted (IVW) method was mainly used due to its good statistical power and robustness. The presence of heterogeneity was evaluated using Cochran's Q test. Pleiotropy was assessed utilizing MR-Egger regression and MR-pleiotropy residual sum and outlier (MR-PRESSO). Results: Generally, there were no significant causal associations between genetically predicted AS and decreased BMD levels. The results of MR-Egger regression, Weighted Median, and Weighted Mode methods were consistent with those of the IVW method. However, there was a sign of a connection between genetically elevated BMD levels and a decreased risk of AS (Heel-BMD: OR = 0.879, 95% CI: 0.795-0.971, P = 0.012; Total-BMD: OR = 0.948, 95% CI: 0.907-0.990, P = 0.017; LS-BMD: OR = 0.919, 95% CI: 0.861-0.980, P = 0.010). The results were confirmed to be reliable by sensitivity analysis. Conclusion: This MR study found that the causal association between genetic liability to AS and the risk of OP or lower BMD in the European population was not evident, which highlights the second effect (e.g., mechanical reasons such as limited movement) of AS on OP. However, genetically predicted decreased BMD/OP is a risk factor for AS with a causal relationship, implying that patients with OP should be aware of the potential risk of developing AS. Moreover, OP and AS share similar pathogenesis and pathways.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Circular RNAs (circRNAs) have been implicated in pulmonary hypertension progression through largely unknown mechanisms. Pulmonary artery endothelial cell (PAEC) dysfunction is a hallmark in the pathogenesis of pulmonary hypertension. However, the specific role of circular RNAs in PAEC injury caused by hypoxia remains unclear. METHODS: In this study, using the Western blotting, RNA pull down, Dual-luciferase reporter assay, immunohistochemistry, and immunofluorescence, we identified a novel circular RNA derived from alternative splicing of the keratin 4 gene (circKrt4). RESULTS: CircKrt4 was upregulated in lung tissues and plasma and specifically in PAECs under hypoxic conditions. In the nucleus, circKrt4 induces endothelial-to-mesenchymal transition by interacting with the Pura (transcriptional activator protein Pur-alpha) to promote N-cadherin gene activation. In the cytoplasm, increased circKrt4 leads to mitochondrial dysfunction by inhibiting cytoplasmic-mitochondrial shuttling of mitochondrial-bound Glpk (glycerol kinase). Intriguingly, circKrt4 was identified as a super enhancer-associated circular RNA that is transcriptionally activated by a transcription factor, CEBPA (CCAAT enhancer binding protein alpha). Furthermore, RBM25 (RNA-binding-motif protein 25) was found to regulate circKrt4 cyclization by increase the back-splicing of Krt4 gene. CONCLUSIONS: These findings demonstrate that a super enhancer-associated circular RNA-circKrt4 modulates PAEC injury to promote pulmonary hypertension by targeting Pura and Glpk.

RESUMO

While supervised learning of over-parameterized neural networks achieved state-of-the-art performance in image classification, it tends to over-fit the labeled training samples to give inferior generalization ability. Output regularization deals with over-fitting by using soft targets as additional training signals. Although clustering is one of the most fundamental data analysis tools for discovering general-purpose and data-driven structures, it has been ignored in existing output regularization approaches. In this article, we leverage this underlying structural information by proposing Cluster-based soft targets for Output Regularization (CluOReg). This approach provides a unified way for simultaneous clustering in embedding space and neural classifier training with cluster-based soft targets via output regularization. By explicitly calculating a class relationship matrix in the cluster space, we obtain classwise soft targets shared by all samples in each class. Results of image classification experiments under various settings on a number of benchmark datasets are provided. Without resorting to external models or designed data augmentation, we get consistent and significant reductions in classification error compared with other approaches, demonstrating that cluster-based soft targets effectively complement the ground-truth label.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to explore the clinical value of metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) in the diagnosis of polymicrobial periprosthetic joint infection (PJI). METHODS: Patients with complete data who underwent surgery at our hospital between July 2017 and January 2021 for suspected periprosthetic joint infection (PJI), according to the 2018 ICE diagnostic criteria, were enrolled, and all patients underwent microbial culture and mNGS detection, which were performed on the BGISEQ-500 platform. Microbial cultures were performed on two samples of synovial fluid, six samples of tissue, and two samples of prosthetic sonicate fluid for each patient. The mNGS was performed on 10 tissues, 64 synovial fluid samples, and 17 prosthetic sonicate fluid samples. The results of mNGS testing were based on the interpretation of mNGS results in the previous literature and the assertions of microbiologists and orthopedic surgeons. The diagnostic efficacy of mNGS in polymicrobial PJI was assessed by comparing the results of conventional microbial cultures and mNGS. RESULTS: A total of 91 patients were finally enrolled in this study. The sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of conventional culture for the diagnosis of PJI were 71.0%, 95.4%, and 76.9%, respectively. The sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of mNGS for the diagnosis of PJI were 91.3%, 86.3%, and 90.1%, respectively. The sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of conventional culture for the diagnosis of polymicrobial PJI were 57.1%, 100%, and 91.3%, respectively. mNGS had a sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of 85.7%, 60.0%, and 65.2%, respectively, for the diagnosis of polymicrobial PJI. CONCLUSIONS: mNGS can improve the diagnosis efficiency of polymicrobial PJI, and the combination of culture and mNGS is a promising method to diagnose polymicrobial PJI.

RESUMO

Objective: Many observational studies have found an association between Alzheimer's disease (AD) and osteoporosis. However, it is unclear whether there is causal genetic between osteoporosis and AD. Methods: A two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) study was used to investigate whether there is a causal relationship between osteoporosis and AD. Genes for osteoporosis and AD were obtained from published the genome-wide association studies (GWAS). Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) with significant genome-wide differences (p < 5 × 10-8) and independent (r 2 < 0.001) were selected, and SNPs with F ≥ 10 were further analyzed. Inverse variance weighted (IVW) was used to assess causality, and the results were reported as odds ratios (ORs). Subsequently, heterogeneity was tested using Cochran's Q test, pleiotropy was tested using the MR-Egger intercept, and leave-one-out sensitivity analysis was performed to assess the robustness of the results. Results: Using the IVW method, MR Egger method, and median-weighted method, we found that the results showed no significant causal effect of osteoporosis at different sites and at different ages on AD, regardless of the removal of potentially pleiotropic SNPs. The results were similar for the opposite direction of causality. These results were confirmed to be reliable and stable by sensitivity analysis. Conclusion: This study found that there is no bidirectional causal relationship between osteoporosis and AD. However, they share similar pathogenesis and pathways.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To investigate refractive prediction accuracy with the OA-2000 (Tomey), Anterion (Heidelberg Engineering), and IOLMaster 500 (Carl Zeiss Meditec AG) in patients with cataract. METHODS: Patients with cataract referred for phacoemulsification were enrolled and scanned with the OA-2000, Anterion, and IOLMaster 500 in random order. The success rate of axial length (AL) measurements per device was calculated and a chi-square test was used to identify the differences in acquisition rate between the three devices. The Bland-Altman method was used to appraise the agreement of biometric parameters between the three devices. Four different formulas (Barrett Universal II [BUII], Haigis, Holladay 1, and SRK/T) were included in the study. The parameters of refractive prediction accuracy comprised predictive error (PE), absolute PE (AE), and percentages of eyes with a PE within ±0.50, ±0.75, and ±1.00 diopters (D). RESULTS: The acquisition rates of AL measurements with the OA-2000 and Anterion were 97.35% and 94.70%, respectively (chi-square = 3.82, P > .05). A significantly lower acquisition rate of 84.82% was obtained with the IOLMaster 500 compared with the other two devices (P < .05). Bland-Altman analysis identified good agreement between the three biometers with narrow 95% limits of agreement for flat and steep keratometry (K1 and K2), anterior chamber depth (ACD), and AL. For PE, only the differences between the Anterion and IOLMaster 500 with the Barrett UII and Haigis formulas were statistically significant (P < .05). The three devices revealed no statistically significant differences in MAE, MedAE, and the proportion of eyes with a PE within ±0.50, ±0.75, and ±1.00 D (P > .05). CONCLUSIONS: The OA-2000 and Anterion showed a similarly higher acquisition rate of AL measurements than the IOLMaster 500 in patients with cataract. Good agreement for K1, K2, ACD, and AL was found between the three biometers. Regarding refractive prediction accuracy, the Anterion did not significantly outperform both the OA-2000 and IOLMaster 500. [J Refract Surg. 2023;39(1):48-55.].

RESUMO

Recently, sulfureted metal oxides have been developed for the catalytic oxidation of Hg0 to HgCl2 using HCl as an oxidant at low temperatures, and they exhibit excellent Hg0 removal performance. Owing to the lack of reaction mechanisms and kinetics, further improvement in their performance for Hg0 conversion is extremely restricted. In this study, the reaction mechanism of Hg0 conversion over sulfureted HPMo/γ-Fe2O3 with HCl at low temperatures was investigated using Hg balance analysis and transient reaction. The chemical adsorption of Hg0 as HgS and the catalytic oxidation of Hg0 to HgCl2 both contributed to Hg0 conversion over sulfureted HPMo/γ-Fe2O3. Meanwhile, the formed HgCl2 can adsorb onto sulfureted HPMo/γ-Fe2O3. Then, the kinetics of Hg0 conversion, Hgt adsorption, and HgCl2 desorption were developed, and the kinetic parameters were gained by fitting the Hg balance curves. Subsequently, the inhibition mechanism of H2O and SO2 on Hg0 conversion over sulfureted HPMo/γ-Fe2O3 was determined by comparing the kinetic parameters. The kinetic model suggested that both HgCl2 resulting from Hg0 oxidation and unoxidized Hg0 can be completely adsorbed on sulfureted HPMo/γ-Fe2O3 with a moderate mass hourly space velocity.
