STUDY OBJECTIVES: The first reports of narcolepsy with cataplexy in Russia were made by Mankovsky (The pathogenesis of narcolepsy (the case of epidemic encephalitis with cataplexy) published in the Sovremennaya psihonevrologia) in 1925. The largest series of patients (n = 110) was reported by A. Vein (doctoral thesis: Hypersomnia Syndrome) in 1964. However, until today, narcolepsy remained relatively unknown in Russia. The aim of this study is to report clinical and polysomnography (PSG)/multiple sleep latency test (MSLT) results in the Russian population and compare them with the European Narcolepsy Network (EU-NN) data (n = 1099) reported. METHODS: Eleven sleep centers from Russia agreed to participate and completed a questionnaire including 58 questions concerning demographic, clinical, PSG, and MSLT data. RESULTS: There were 89 patients with a mean age of 35.6 ± 16.9 years (± here and further indicates standard deviation), 58% males, and 42% females. Narcolepsy started at a mean age of 25.6 ± 14.6 years (range 5-74 years). The mean Epworth Sleepiness Scale score was 18.4 ± 3.5 points (range: 11-24). Sleep paralysis was reported by 59.1%, and hallucinations by 82% of patients. In MSLT, ≥ 2 sleep-onset REM (rapid eye movement) periods (SOREMPs) were found in 81.6%. No center provided human leukocyte antigen (HLA) or cerebral spinal fluid hypocretin data. CONCLUSIONS: Clinical and neurophysiological data from this first study of the Russian Narcolepsy Network suggest a similar profile to the recently reported EU-NN data. The more severe and higher percentage of patients with cataplexy and presenting with both excessive daytime sleepiness and cataplexy may reflect low awareness of narcolepsy in Russia. Superconductors can host quantized magnetic flux tubes surrounded by supercurrents, called Abrikosov vortices. Vortex penetration into a superconducting film is usually limited to its edges and triggered by external magnetic fields or local electrical currents. With a view to novel research directions in quantum computation, the possibility to generate and control single flux quanta in situ is thus challenging. We introduce a far-field optical method to sculpt the magnetic flux or generate permanent single vortices at any desired position in a superconductor. It is based on a fast quench following the absorption of a tightly focused laser pulse that locally heats the superconductor above its critical temperature. We achieve ex-nihilo creation of a single vortex pinned at the center of the hotspot, while its counterpart opposite flux is trapped tens of micrometers away at its boundaries. Our method paves the way to optical operation of Josephson transport with single flux quanta.

The acoustoelectric effect is the generation of a acoustoelectric current in a non-biased device by a piezoactive acoustic wave. This effect has recently attracted the attention of researchers as a possible method to control the motion of massive objects in the quantum regime. We suggest using this effect for development of highly sensitive nanoelectronic sensors. The sensitivity could be increased through the use of modulation mode of operation based on the acoustic pilot signal and the transition from quasi-stationary measurement to measurement at the modulation frequency. The acoustic delay line based on shear-horizontal acoustic wave of zero order (SH0) with resonant frequency 3.25 MHz in Y-X LiNbO3 plate was produced. The nanostructure consisting of nanowire with size 20 nm × 180 nm was placed in the center between IDTs. The current-voltage characteristics of this nanowire in the presence and absence of the acoustic wave were meazured by a picoampermeter. The analysis has shown that the presence of piezoactive acoustic wave is influenced by electric current in a nanowire.

We present a noninvasive and noncontacting biosensor using Wavelength Modulated Differential Photothermal Radiometry (WM-DPTR) to monitor blood glucose concentration (BGC) through interstitial fluid (ISF) probing in human middle fingers. WM-DPTR works in the interference-free mid-infrared range with differential wavelengths at the peak and baseline of the fundamental glucose molecule absorption band, giving rise to high glucose sensitivity and specificity. In vivo WM-DPTR measurements and simultaneous finger pricking BGC reference measurements were performed on diabetic and nondiabetic volunteers during oral glucose tolerance testing. The measurement results demonstrated high resolution and large dynamic range (~80 deg) change in phase signal in the normal-to-hyperglycemia BGC range (5 mmol/L to higher than 33.2 mmol/L), which were supported by negative control measurements. The immunity to temperature variation of WM-DPTR yields precise and accurate noninvasive glucose measurements in the ISF.

Single-Frequency Thermal Wave Radar Imaging (SF-TWRI) was introduced and used to obtain quantitative thickness images of coatings on an aluminum block and on polyetherketone, and to image blind subsurface holes in a steel block. In SF-TWR, the starting and ending frequencies of a linear frequency modulation sweep are chosen to coincide. Using the highest available camera frame rate, SF-TWRI leads to a higher number of sampled points along the modulation waveform than conventional lock-in thermography imaging because it is not limited by conventional undersampling at high frequencies due to camera frame-rate limitations. This property leads to large reduction in measurement time, better quality of images, and higher signal-noise-ratio across wide frequency ranges. For quantitative thin-coating imaging applications, a two-layer photothermal model with lumped parameters was used to reconstruct the layer thickness from multi-frequency SF-TWR images. SF-TWRI represents a next-generation thermography method with superior features for imaging important classes of thin layers, materials, and components that require high-frequency thermal-wave probing well above today's available infrared camera technology frame rates.

The electrical properties of conducting meshes are investigated numerically by solving the related Kirchhoff equations with the Lanczos algorithm. The method is directly inspired by the recursion technique widely used to study the electronic and vibrational spectra of solids. The method is demonstrated to be very efficient and fast when applied to resistor networks. It is used to calculate equivalent resistances between arbitrary pairs of nodes in simple resistive lattices. When the resistance fluctuates statistically from bond to bond, the method makes it possible to evaluate the fluctuations of the electrical properties of the network. It is also employed to assign an effective bulk resistivity to a discrete conducting three-dimensional mesh.

Allele frequencies for 15 STRs (CSF1PO, D3S1358, D5S818, D7S820, D8S1179, D13S317, D16S539, D18S51, D21S11, FGA, Penta D, Penta E, THO1, TPOX, and vWA) in the PowerPlex 16 System (Promega Corporation) were assessed in 386 individuals from five Russian urban populations. No significant between-population differences in frequencies and molecular variance of 15 microsatellites were revealed. For all 15 loci, the combined matching probability is 3.19 x 10(-18) and the power of exclusion is 99.99989%.

The study examined associations between Hepatitis C (HCV) seropositivity and a lifetime history of jail or correctional facility incarceration among injection drug users. The sample consisted of 351 injection drug users recruited in inner-city neighborhoods of Baltimore. Multiple logistic regressions were fit to assess associations between HCV seropositivity and a lifetime history of incarceration for the total sample and stratified by race. Analyses demonstrated HCV nearly two times greater for whites than African Americans. In addition, HCV was 2.6 times greater in participants incarcerated in correctional facilities and HCV was 7.4 times greater in participants reporting more than 5 years of injection drug use compared to participants reporting less than 1 year of injection drug use. The study findings suggest that incorporating systematic HCV screening, prevention, and treatment programs within correctional systems represents a vital yet underutilized strategy to reduce HCV transmission in society as a whole.

This report examines associations between hepatitis A virus (HAV) infection prevalence and a history of incarceration in jail or a correctional facility among a population of drug users in Baltimore stratified by African American and white racial/ethnic status. The study sample consisted of 509 non-injection and injection drug users recruited from inner-city neighborhoods of the Baltimore metropolitan region. The baseline prevalence of HAV infection was 36.9% (N=188). One-fourth (25.5%) of the sample reported no lifetime history of incarceration, 44.6% reported incarceration in a local jail in their lifetime, and 29.9% reported incarceration in a correctional facility in their lifetime. In the multivariate logistic analysis, HAV infection prevalence was higher for whites (44.3%) [adjusted odds ratio (AOR)=2.3, 95% CI=1.5-3.5] when compared to African Americans (30.5%) adjusting for gender, age, and education. In the analysis stratified by race/ethnicity, as anticipated, jail incarceration and correctional facility incarceration were each independently associated with elevated HAV prevalence among white drug users. African American drug users with a high school diploma had significantly lower HAV infection prevalence when compared to African American drug users who did not graduate from high school. Heightened HAV prevalence among white drug users compared to African American drug users is noteworthy given the opposite association of HAV infection prevalence and these two racial/ethnic groups in the general population. Since millions of incarcerated drug users in the US return to society each year, the results suggest that incorporating systematic HAV screening, prevention, and treatment programs within correctional systems represents a vital yet underutilized strategy to reduce HAV transmission in society as a whole.
