Crop irrigation requirements are usually estimated based on crop evapotranspiration (ETc) as determined by the reference evapotranspiration (ETo) and crop coefficient (Kc). There is a lack of knowledge on the irrigation requirements of tropical forage crops in Brazil, contrasting with the increasing use of irrigation in pastures. The effort of this study was to investigate what would be the water needs of tropical forages in Southern Brazil, based on a robust experimental database. The study was carried out in São Paulo State-Brazil using different forages species and their combinations [Guinea grass (GG); Guinea grass + black oat + ryegrass (GOR); Bermuda grass (BG), and Bermuda + black oat + ryegrass (BOR)]. The experimental fields were fully irrigated, and the Kc values were derived from ETc measurements on lysimeters; ETo was estimated using daily data from a nearby weather station and the standard FAO56 parameterization. Mean daily ETc values for GG, GOR, BG and BOR were 4.1, 2.9, 3.6, and 3.4 mm, respectively, and respective mean Kc values were 0.99, 0.90, 1.0, and 0.94. Average Kc values for all plots decreased as ETo increased, producing a negative Kc-ETo relationship, mainly when ETo reached values greater than 5 mm d-1. This was most likely due to internal plant stomatal resistance to vapor release from the leaves diffusing to the atmosphere at high ETo. So, the time-based Kc curves described by FAO 56 manual should be adjusted for the analyzed crops considering different ranges of ETo to improve the required irrigation depth.

The main objective of this study was to estimate the genetic diversity levels and haplotype traceability in pacu Piaractus mesopotamicus from the breeding program located in Brazil by analyses of the mitochondrial DNA control region (mtDNA). Moreover, broodstocks from eight commercial fish farms were used for comparative evaluation, four from Brazil (Br1-Br4) and four from Argentina (Ar1-Ar4). The descriptive results revealed 47 polymorphic sites and 51 mutations, which evidenced 34 haplotypes. Ten haplotypes were shared among fish farms and 24 were exclusive. The nucleotide diversity (π) ranged from 0.00031 to 0.01462 and haplotype diversity (Hd) from 0.125 to 0.868. The analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA) indicated high structure present in the analyzed stocks (FST = 0.13356 and ФST = 0.52707). The genetic diversity was high in most of the commercial broodstocks, especially those from Brazil. We observed seven haplotypes in the genetic breeding population, of which four were exclusive and three shared among the commercial fish farms. The genetic diversity was moderate (π = 0.00265 and Hd = 0.424) and considered appropriated for this breeding population of pacu. Our results provide support for the genetic diversity maintenance and mtDNA traceability of pacu commercial broodstocks.

Brazilian cattle production is mainly conducted with the use of cultivated or native forages, which is considered one of the most efficient ways of production. In this sense, this study aimed to evaluate the production and water-use efficiency of Guinea grass under different associations between nitrogen and boron doses, as well as different regrowth cycles. The experiment field (22°42'14.6'' S, 47°37'24.1'' W, and 569-m altitude) has a regional climate classified as Cwa, which stands for a humid subtropical climate. The experimental design was randomized blocks, with a 4×4×11 factorial arrangement consisting of boron (0, 0.181, and 0.363 kg ha−1 cycle−1) and nitrogen (22.7, 45.5, 68.2, and 90.9 kg ha−1 cycle−1) fertilizations, plus 11 regrowth cycles and 4 replications. The pasture of Mombaça "Guinea grass" (Megathyrsus Maximus Syn. Panicum Maximum) was irrigated by a sprinkler system. Unlike boron, nitrogen positively influenced forage production. The cycles had a strong influence on production, with winter cycles being the least productive compared to the others.(AU)
A produção bovina brasileira é feita principalmente com o uso de forragens cultivadas ou nativas, que é considerada umas das maneiras mais eficiente de produção. Nesse sentindo, teve-se por objetivo avaliar a produtividade e produtividade da água do capim Mombaça com diferentes combinações de nitrogênio e boro em diferentes ciclos de rebrota. O campo experimental (22°42'14,6'' S e 47°37'24,1'' O, com altitude de 569 m) possui um clima regional classificado como tipo Cwa - Subtropical ou tropical de altitude. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi um fatorial 4×4×11, sendo 2 formas de adubação: boratada foram adotados os níveis de 0; 0,181 e 0,363 kg ha−1 ciclo−1 e a adubação nitrogenada com níveis 22,7, 45,5, 68,2 e 90,9 kg ha−1 ciclo−1 com 11 ciclos de rebrota, e 4 repetições. A pastagem utilizada foi o capim Mombaça "Guinea grass" (Megathyrsus Maximus syn. Panicum Maximum) em sistema irrigado por aspersão. Durante o período avaliado observou-se que o nitrogênio influenciou positivamente a produção forrageira, enquanto o boro não influenciou a produção forrageira. Os ciclos tiveram forte influência na produção, sendo que os ciclos de inverno foram os menos produtivos comparados aos demais.(AU)

The guitarfishes Pseudobatos horkelii and Pseudobatos percellens meet the criteria for threatened status as Critically Endangered (CR) and Endangered (EN), respectively. Both species occur in the Southern Atlantic Ocean. Considering the lack of data on the genetic structure of these species, the present study evaluated the genetic variability and population structure of the P. horkelii and P. percellens in the southern region of Brazil and the northern coast of Argentina, based on sequences of mitochondrial DNA, Control Region (D-loop). Samples of P. horkelii (n = 135) were analyzed in six localities situated in Northern Argentina, along the Brazilian states' coast. The mean of nucleotide diversity was 0.0053, the ΦST was 0.4277 and demographic analysis of P. horkelii suggests the existence of stability of the populations, with D = 0.9929, FS = 2.0155, SSD = 0.0817, R = 0.2153. In P. percellens (n = 101) were analyzed from six Brazilian localities along the coast of Santa Catarina, Paraná, and São Paulo. The mean nucleotide diversity was 0.0014 and ΦST value of 0.2921, the demographic analysis indicates a high migration rate of P. percellens among the localities evaluated, with D = 0.5222, FS = 0.3528, SSD = 0.01785, R = 0.3890.(AU)

Crop coefficient (Kc) is the ratio between crop evapotranspiration (ETc) and reference evapotranspiration (ETo), representing the phenological effects on crop water consumption. Kc is fundamental to estimating ETc by agrometeorological methods. This research study aimed to determine Kc and ETc values for Guinea grass (Megathyrsus maximus cv. Mombaça) and Bermuda grass (Cynodon spp.), both single cropped for one year and overseeded with black oat (Avena strigosa) and ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum) during fall/winter. The experiment in the field comprised four plots, two for each tropical forage, with and without overseeding. At the center of each plot, there was a weighing lysimeter with an automated system for data collection. ETc was measured daily over four seasons following the lysimetric method; ETo was calculated using the Penman-Monteith equation. ETc and ETo values were used to estimate Kc values. The single cropped Guinea grass showed the highest values for ETc, with mean ETc and Kc of 3.99 mm d1 and 1.07, respectively. The single cropped Bermuda grass showed ETc and Kc values of 3.57 mm d1 and 0.96, respectively. The results of paired t-testing for Kc showed no significant differences (p = 0.05) between single cropped and intercropped for both Guinea grass and Cynodon spp. During winter, intercropped Guinea grass did not show an ETc significantly higher than single cropped Guinea grass, with mean Kc values 0.98 for intercropped and 1.10 for single cropped. Similarly, Bermuda grass did not show significant differences between mean Kc values for intercropped (1.02) and single cropped (1.00).(AU)

Today, elasmobranchs are one the most threatened vertebrate groups worldwide. In fact, at least 90% of elasmobranch species are listed in the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List, while more than 40% are data-deficient. Although these vertebrates are mainly affected by unsustainable fishery activities, bycatch is also one of the major threats to sharks and batoids worldwide, and represents a challenge for both sustainable fishery management and for biodiversity and conservational efforts. Thus, in this study, DNA barcode methodology was used to identify the bycatch composition of batoid species from small-scale industrial fisheries in the southwest Atlantic and artisanal fisheries from southeast Brazil. A total of 228 individuals belonging to four Chondrichthyes orders, seven families, and at least 17 distinct batoid species were sequenced; among these individuals, 131 belonged to species protected in Brazil, 101 to globally threatened species, and some to species with trade restrictions provided by Appendix II of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES). These results highlight the impacts on marine biodiversity of bycatch by small-scale industrial and unmanaged artisanal fisheries from the southwest Atlantic, and support the implementation of DNA-based methodologies for species-specific identification in data-poor fisheries as a powerful tool for improving the quality of fisheries' catch statistics and for keeping precise bycatch records.

The experiment was carried out between April and June 2016 at the Luiz de Queiroz College of Agriculture (ESALQ/USP), located in Piracicaba, SP at the geographical coordinates 22°42′14.6″ S and 47°37′24.1″ W and altitude of 546 m. This study aimed to assess these FDR probes to estimate water consumption in comparison to measurements by weighing lysimeters (ETcLys) and reference evapotranspiration (ETo) in Mombaça and Bermuda grass pastures under single cultivation and overseeded with oat and ryegrass. Soil moisture was assessed daily by FDR probes by estimating crop evapotranspiration (ETcFDR probe) from soil water balance calculation, which was correlated with ETcLys and ETo (Penman-Monteith, FAO 56). For all treatments, FDR probes presented the highest water consumptions when compared to the other two evapotranspiration methods, with accumulations of 126.5 and 125.6 mm for single and overseeded Mombaça grass, respectively. For Bermuda grass, water consumption was 123.4 mm in the single cultivation and 128.5 mm when overseeded. The method of estimating evapotranspiration by FDR probes showed good correlations with ETo and ETcLys.
A determinação da umidade do solo é preponderante para o bom uso dos recursos hídricos disponíveis. Neste aspecto, as sondas de Reflectometria no Domínio da Frequência (FDR) tem a vantagem da mobilidade e praticidade em relação aos lisímetros. O experimento foi conduzido entre abril e junho de 2016 na Escola Superior de Agricultura Luiz de Queiroz (ESALQ/USP), localizada em Piracicaba, SP nas coordenadas geográficas 22°42′14.6″ S e 47°37′24.1″ O e altitude de 546 m. O objetivo desse trabalho foi avaliar o uso de sonda FDR para estimativa do consumo de água em relação a medidas obtidas através de lisímetros de pesagem (ETcLis) e da evapotranspiração de referência (ETo) em pastagens de capim Mombaça e Cynodon em cultivos exclusivos e sobressemeados com aveia e azevém. A umidade de solo foi diariamente avaliada pela sonda FDR estimando a evapotranspiração de cultura (ETcsonda FDR), a partir do cálculo de balanço hídrico no solo, que foi correlacionada com a ETcLis e a ETo (Penman-Monteith - FAO 56). A sonda FDR apresentou para todos os tratamentos os maiores consumos em relação aos outros dois métodos de evapotranspiração, com acúmulos durante o ciclo de 126,5 mm e 125,6 mm, no Mombaça exclusivo e sobressemeado, respectivamente. Several hypotheses are used to explain species richness patterns. Some of them (e.g. species-area, species-energy, environment-energy, water-energy, terrestrial primary productivity, environmental spatial heterogeneity, and climatic heterogeneity) are known to explain species richness patterns of terrestrial organisms, especially when they are combined. For aquatic organisms, however, it is unclear if these hypotheses can be useful to explain for these purposes. Therefore, we used a selection model approach to assess the predictive capacity of such hypotheses, and to determine which of them (combined or not) would be the most appropriate to explain the fish species distribution in small Brazilian streams. We perform the Akaike's information criteria for models selections and the eigenvector analysis to control the special autocorrelation. The spatial structure was equal to 0.453, Moran's I, and require 11 spatial filters. All models were significant and had adjustments ranging from 0.370 to 0.416 with strong spatial component (ranging from 0.226 to 0.369) and low adjustments for environmental data (ranging from 0.001 to 0.119) We obtained two groups of hypothesis are able to explain the richness pattern (1) water-energy, temporal productivity-heterogeneity (AIC = 4498.800) and (2) water-energy, temporal productivity-heterogeneity and area (AIC = 4500.400). We conclude that the fish richness patterns in small Brazilian streams are better explained by a combination of Water-Energy + Productivity + Temporal Heterogeneity hypotheses and not by just one.

Introdução: A escolha da especialidade médica e os conhecimentos sobre o mercado de trabalho são fundamentais para o sucesso profissional e um bom funcionamento dos serviços de saúde. Objetivo: Investigar os fatores que influenciam a escolha da especialidade e expectativas do acadêmico sobre as questões que envolvem o efetivo exercício da medicina e o mercado de trabalho. Metodologia: Foram aplicados questionários padronizados sobre fatores relacionados à escolha da especialidade médica aos estudantes de medicina do 9º ao 12º período do Curso de Medicina da Universidade José do Rosário Vellano UNIFENAS, Câmpus Belo Horizonte. Resultados: Foram aplicados 179 questionários, com público predominante de mulheres (64,8%). Os participantes são oriundos de todas as regiões do país. 84,1% concluíram o ensino médio em escolas particulares, e a renda mensal familiar era superior a R$ 9.000,00 em 69,9 % dos alunos. A maioria (84,4%) atuou em ligas acadêmicas; poucos (33,5%) realizaram estágios extracurriculares ou participaram de alguma pesquisa científica (25,7%). O momento de escolha das especialidades foi durante o internato (37,4%) e a maioria das rejeições ocorreu entre o 2º e 4º ano do curso (39,1%). Destaque para o percentual de alunos (21,2%) que já entram na escola com sua especialidade já definida. As mais escolhidas foram pediatria (16,2%) e cirurgia (14%). As mais rejeitadas também foram pediatria (37,4%) e cirurgia (31,8%). Os principais fatores apontados como influência na escolha: aptidão, forma de trabalho, rodízio satisfatório na especialidade e autonomia. Quando perguntados onde pretendem exercer sua profissão, responderam: consultório (79,9%), hospital privado (73,7%) e hospital público (66,5%). A maior parte dos alunos (52%) acha que vai trabalhar, por semana, entre 49 e 60 horas; com três vínculos de emprego (50,8%); ganhando, após cinco anos de formados, mais de R$ 20.000,00 (47,5%). A maioria (86%) se imagina trabalhando em plantões, por 14, 6 anos em média. 82,7% dos alunos afirmaram que, em nenhum momento do curso, tiveram informações sobre legislação trabalhista e 78,8% negam ter recebido informações sobre mercado de trabalho. 98,3% dos alunos gostariam que a faculdade ofertasse mais informações sobre especialidades médicas, mercado de trabalho e legislação trabalhista. Conclusão: O estudante de medicina escolhe sua especialidade por vários fatores, mas desconhece o mercado de trabalho. A escola não prepara o graduando para sua efetiva inserção no mundo profissional
Introduction: The choice of a medical specialty and knowledge of the labor market are essential items for professional successfulness and the good functioning of the health services. Objective: To investigate the factors that influence the choice of specialty and the apprentice expectations on the issues that involve the effectiveness of practicing medicine and the labor market. Methodology: Standardized questionnaires on factors related to the choice of medical specialty were applied to medical students from the 9th to 12th periods at Jose do Rosario Vellano University UNIFENAS, Campus Belo Horizonte. Results: 179 questionnaires were given, predominantly women (64.8%). Participants are from all regions of the country. 84.1% completed high school in private schools and the monthly family income was over R$9,000.00 in 69.9% of the students. The majority (84.4%) were involved in academic leagues; only a few (33.5%) did extracurricular internships or participated in some scientific research (25.7%). Choosing a medical specialty mostly occurred during the internship (37.4%) and most of the rejections occurred between the 2nd and 4th year of the course (39.1%). We highlight the number of students (21.2%) that already enters the school with a defined specialty. Most specialties chosen were pediatrics (16.2%) and surgery (14%) and the most rejected was also pediatrics (37.4%) and surgery (31.8%). The main factors identified as choice influences are: aptitude, work performance, satisfactory training in the specialty field and autonomy. When asked where they intended to practice their profession, they answered as follows: in a private office (79.9%), private hospital (73.7%) and public hospital (66.5%). Most students (52%) think they will work between 49 and 60 hours per week, with 3 different employers (50.8%); making more than R$20,000.00 (47.5%) after five years of practice. The majority (86%) imagine themselves working in shifts, on an average of 14.5 years. 82.7% of the students stated that at no point in their medical course, they had information on labor laws and 78.8% denied having received information about the labor market. 98.3% of the students would like the schools to offer more information on the medical specialties, labor market and labor laws. Conclusion: The medical student chooses his specialty for several factors, but he does not know the labor market. The school does not prepare graduates for the effective insertion in the professional world

Tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum) is a fish species from the Amazon and Orinoco Rivers, with favorable characteristics to the cultivation system and great market acceptance in South America. However, the construction of a genetic map for the genetic improvement of this species is limited by the low number of molecular markers currently described. Thus, this study aimed to validate gene-associated and anonymous (non-genic) microsatellites obtained by next generation sequencing (RNA-seq and whole genome shotgun-WGS, respectively), for future construction of a genetic map and search for quantitative trait loci (QTL) in this species. In the RNA-seq data, the observed and expected heterozygosity (Ho and He) ranged from 0.09 to 0.73, and 0.09 to 0.85, respectively. In the WGS data, Ho and He ranged from 0.33 to 0.95, and 0.28 to 0.92, respectively. In general, the evaluation of 200 markers resulted in 45 polymorphic loci, of which 14 were gene-associated (RNA-Seq) and 31 were anonymous (WGS). Moreover, some markers were related to genes of the immune system, biological regulation/control and biogenesis. This study contributes to increase the number of molecular markers available for genetic studies in C. macropomum, which will allow the development of breeding programs assisted by molecular markers.

The tiger shark (Galeocerdo cuvier) has a global distribution in tropical and warm temperate seas, and it is caught in numerous fisheries worldwide, mainly as bycatch. It is currently assessed as near threatened by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List. In this study, we identified nine microsatellite loci through next generation sequencing (454 pyrosequencing) using 29 samples from the western Atlantic. The genetic diversity of these loci were assessed and revealed a total of 48 alleles ranging from 3 to 7 alleles per locus (average of 5.3 alleles). Cross-species amplification was successful at most loci for other species such as Carcharhinus longimanus, C. acronotus and Alopias superciliosus. Given the potential applicability of genetic markers for biological conservation, these data may contribute to the population assessment of this and other species of sharks worldwide.

Information regarding population structure and genetic connectivity is an important contribution when establishing conservation strategies to manage threatened species. The oceanic whitetip shark, Carcharhinus longimanus, is a highly migratory, large-bodied, pelagic shark listed by the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) Red List as "vulnerable" throughout its range and "critically endangered" in the western north Atlantic. In 2014, the species was protected globally under Appendix II of CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species), limiting and regulating trade. This study used partial sequences of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) control region to determine the population genetic structure of oceanic whitetip sharks across the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. 724 base pairs were obtained from 215 individuals that identifed nine polymorphic sites and defined 12 distinct haplotypes. Total nucleotide diversity (π) was 0.0013 and haplotype diversity (h) was 0.5953. The Analysis of Molecular Variance (AMOVA) evidenced moderate levels of population structure (ɸST = 0.1039) with restricted gene flow between the western and eastern Atlantic Ocean, and a strong relationship between the latter region and the Indian Ocean. Even though the oceanic whitetip is a highly migratory animal the results presented here show that their genetic variability is slightly below average of other pelagic sharks. Additionally, this study recommends that at least two populations in the Atlantic Ocean should be considered distinct (eastern and western Atlantic) and conservation efforts should be focused in areas with the greatest genetic diversity by environmental managers.

There is broad consensus that the diversity of functional traits within species assemblages drives several ecological processes. It is also widely recognized that rare species are the first to become extinct following human-induced disturbances. Surprisingly, however, the functional importance of rare species is still poorly understood, particularly in tropical species-rich assemblages where the majority of species are rare, and the rate of species extinction can be high. Here, we investigated the consequences of local and regional extinctions on the functional structure of species assemblages. We used three extensive datasets (stream fish from the Brazilian Amazon, rainforest trees from French Guiana, and birds from the Australian Wet Tropics) and built an integrative measure of species rarity versus commonness, combining local abundance, geographical range, and habitat breadth. Using different scenarios of species loss, we found a disproportionate impact of rare species extinction for the three groups, with significant reductions in levels of functional richness, specialization, and originality of assemblages, which may severely undermine the integrity of ecological processes. The whole breadth of functional abilities within species assemblages, which is disproportionately supported by rare species, is certainly critical in maintaining ecosystems particularly under the ongoing rapid environmental transitions.

The Atlantic goliath grouper, Epinephelus itajara , is a critically endangered species, threatened by illegal fishing and the destruction of its habitats. A number of other closely related grouper species found in the western Atlantic are also fished intensively. While some countries apply rigorous legislation, illegal harvesting followed by the falsification of fish products, which impedes the correct identification of the species, is a common practice, allowing the catch to be marketed as a different grouper species. In this case, molecular techniques represent an important tool for the monitoring and regulation of fishery practices, and are essential for the forensic identification of a number of different species. In the present study, species-specific primers were developed for the Cytochrome Oxidase subunit I gene, which were applied in a multiplex PCR for the simultaneous identification of nine different species of Epinephelidae: Epinephelus itajara , E. quinquefasciatus , E. morio , Hyporthodus flavolimbatus , H. niveatus , Mycteroperca acutirostris , M. bonaci , M. marginata , and M. microlepis . Multiplex PCR is a rapid, reliable and cost-effective procedure for the identification of commercially-valuable endangered fish species, and may represent a valuable tool for the regulation and sustainable management of fishery resources.(AU)

Among the various shark species that are captured as bycatch in commercial fishing operations, the group of pelagic sharks is still one of the least studied and known. Within those, the crocodile shark, Pseudocarcharias kamoharai, a small-sized lamnid shark, is occasionally caught by longline vessels in certain regions of the tropical oceans worldwide. However, the population dynamics of this species, as well as the impact of fishing mortality on its stocks, are still unknown, with the crocodile shark currently one of the least studied of all pelagic sharks. Given this, the present study aimed to assess the population structure of P. kamoharai in several regions of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans using genetic molecular markers. The nucleotide composition of the mitochondrial DNA control region of 255 individuals was analyzed, and 31 haplotypes were found, with an estimated diversity Hd = 0.627, and a nucleotide diversity π = 0.00167. An analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA) revealed a fixation index ΦST = -0.01118, representing an absence of population structure among the sampled regions of the Atlantic Ocean, and between the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. These results show a high degree of gene flow between the studied areas, with a single genetic stock and reduced population variability. In panmictic populations, conservation efforts can be concentrated in more restricted areas, being these representative of the total biodiversity of the species. When necessary, this strategy could be applied to the genetic maintenance of P. kamoharai.

The fish species Synbranchus marmoratus has been reported to exist as a species complex due to high intraspecific karyotypic variability in spite of the difficulty or impossibility to distinguish them using morphological traits alone. The goal of this work was to use cytogenetic and molecular methods to determine the species delimitations and understand the karyoevolution of S. marmoratus using samples collected from distinct Brazilian localities. Among the analyzed specimens, a large degree of cytogenetic variation related to diploid numbers and karyotype structure was observed, with karyotypes showing 2n=42, 44 and 46 chromosomes. In addition, using sequences of three mitochondrial genes, the phylogenetic relationships between every sample with a known karyotype were determined, which revealed significant nucleotide divergence among the karyomorphs. Also, the analyses indicate that chromosomal rearrangements occurred independently within the distinct lineages of S. marmoratus complex, which resulted in the appearance of distinct karyotypic variants in a non-linear fashion related to diploid numbers and in the appearance of similar non-homologous chromosomes. Finally, the integration of both molecular cytogenetic and phylogenetic approaches allowed the determination of specific chromosomes possibly involved in rearrangements and a better understanding about the evolutionary processes involved in the differentiation of Synbranchus genus.
A espécie de peixe Synbranchus marmoratus tem sido reportada como um complexo de espécies devido à elevada variabilidade cariotípica intraespecífica a despeito da dificuldade ou impossibilidade de distingui-las usando apenas caracteres morfológicos. O objetivo deste trabalho foi utilizar métodos citogenéticos e moleculares para determinar a delimitação das espécies e compreender a carioevolução de S. marmoratus utilizando amostras coletadas em distintas localidades brasileiras. Dentre os espécimes analisados, um alto grau de variação citogenética relativo aos números diploides e estrutura cariotípica foi observado, com cariótipos mostrando 2n=42, 44 e 46 cromossomos. Adicionalmente, utilizando sequências de três genes mitocondriais, as relações filogenéticas entre cada amostra com cariótipo conhecido foram determinadas, revelando uma divergência nucleotídica significativa entre os cariomorfos. Além disso, as análises indicam que rearranjos cromossômicos ocorreram independentemente nas distintas linhagens do complexo S. marmoratus, o que resultou no aparecimento de distintas variantes cariotípicas de forma não linear em relação aos números diploides e no surgimento de cromossomos similares e não homólogos. Finalmente, a integração de uma abordagem citogenética molecular e filogenética permitiu a determinação de cromossomos específicos que, possivelmente, estão envolvidos em rearranjos e um melhor entendimento sobre os processos evolutivos envolvidos na diferenciação do gênero Synbranchus.
