RESUMO
PIP: The antiovulatory effects of depot-medroxyprogesterone acetate were studied in 50 nursing mothers and 25 non-lactating women for 1 year. Th e drug proved efficient as an antiovulatory and ovariostatic substance. Tolerance was excellent in all cases and the product was well-received. Side effects included hypo- and oligomenorrhea, spotting, and metrorrhagia. Vaginal cytology and cervical mucus were typical for progesterone treatment. A rise in basal temperature occurred within 48 hours of injection and was maintained for 60 days. Biochemical parameters and chemical activity of the substance are discussed. The authors emphasize that, in spite of the ovulation block, there was no decrease in either normal milk secretion or milk surge.^ieng
