RESUMO

An external volume Bragg grating (VBG) is used for transverse and longitudinal mode stabilization of a broad area diode laser (BAL) with an on-chip transverse Bragg resonance (TBR) grating. The internal TBR grating defines a transverse low-loss mode at a specific propagation angle inside the BAL. Selection of the TBR mode was realized via the angular geometry of an external resonator assembly consisting of the TBR BAL and a feedback element. A feedback mirror provides near diffraction limited and spectral narrow output in the TBR mode albeit requiring an intricate alignment procedure. If feedback is provided via a VBG, adjustment proves to be far less critical and higher output powers were achieved. Moreover, additional modulation in the far field distribution became discernible allowing for a better study of the TBR concept.

RESUMO

The emission characteristics of a novel, specially designed broad area diode laser (BAL) with on-chip transversal Bragg resonance (TBR) grating in lateral direction were investigated in an off-axis external cavity setup. The internal TBR grating defines a low loss transversal mode at a specific angle of incidence and a certain wavelength. By providing feedback at this specific angle with an external mirror, it is possible to select this low loss transverse mode and stabilize the BAL. Near diffraction limited emission with an almost single lobed far field pattern could be realized, in contrast to the double lobed far field pattern of similar setups using standard BALs or phase-locked diode laser arrays. Furthermore, we could achieve a narrow bandwidth emission with a simplified setup without external frequency selective elements.

RESUMO

In a synchronized photoautotrophic culture of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, cell size, cell number, and the averaged starch content were determined throughout the light-dark cycle. For single-cell analyses, the relative cellular starch was quantified by measuring the second harmonic generation (SHG). In destained cells, amylopectin essentially represents the only biophotonic structure. As revealed by various validation procedures, SHG signal intensities are a reliable relative measure of the cellular starch content. During photosynthesis-driven starch biosynthesis, synchronized Chlamydomonas cells possess an unexpected cell-to-cell diversity both in size and starch content, but the starch-related heterogeneity largely exceeds that of size. The cellular volume, starch content, and amount of starch/cell volume obey lognormal distributions. Starch degradation was initiated by inhibiting the photosynthetic electron transport in illuminated cells or by darkening. Under both conditions, the averaged rate of starch degradation is almost constant, but it is higher in illuminated than in darkened cells. At the single-cell level, rates of starch degradation largely differ but are unrelated to the initial cellular starch content. A rate equation describing the cellular starch degradation is presented. SHG-based three-dimensional reconstructions of Chlamydomonas cells containing starch granules are shown.

RESUMO

The precise knowledge of one of two complementary experimental outcomes prevents us from obtaining complete information about the other one. This formulation of Niels Bohr's principle of complementarity when applied to the paradigm of wave-particle dualism--that is, to Young's double-slit experiment--implies that the information about the slit through which a quantum particle has passed erases interference. In the present paper we report a double-slit experiment using two photons created by spontaneous parametric down-conversion where we observe interference in the signal photon despite the fact that we have located it in one of the slits due to its entanglement with the idler photon. This surprising aspect of complementarity comes to light by our special choice of the TEM(01) pump mode. According to quantum field theory the signal photon is then in a coherent superposition of two distinct wave vectors giving rise to interference fringes analogous to two mechanical slits.

RESUMO

A transient two-dimensional model describing degenerate four-wave mixing inside saturable gain media is presented. The new model is compared to existing one-dimensional models with their qualitative results confirmed. Large quantitative differences with respect to peak reflectivity and optimum pump fluence are observed. Furthermore, the influence of the beam focus size, the transverse position and the crossing angle on the reflectivity of the grating is investigated using the improved model. It is demonstrated that the phase conjugate reflectivity depends sensitively on the transverse features of the interacting beams with a transverse shift in the position of the pump beams yielding a threefold improvement in reflectivity.

RESUMO

A new approach for efficient second-harmonic generation using diode lasers is presented. The experimental setup is based on a tapered amplifier operated in a ring resonator that is coupled to a miniaturized enhancement ring resonator containing a periodically poled lithium niobate crystal. Frequency locking of the diode laser emission to the resonance frequency of the enhancement cavity is realized purely optically, resulting in stable, single-frequency operation. Blue light at 488 nm with an output power of 310 mW is generated with an optical-to-optical conversion efficiency of 18%.

RESUMO

Stripe-array diode lasers naturally operate in an anti-phase supermode. This produces a sharp double lobe far field at angles +/-alpha depending on the period of the array. In this paper a 40 emitter gain guided stripe-array laterally coupled by off-axis filtered feedback is investigated experimentally and numerically. We predict theoretically and confirm experimentally that at doubled feedback angle 2alpha a stable higher order supermode exists with twice the number of emitters per array period. The theoretical model is based on time domain traveling wave equations for optical fields coupled to the carrier density equation taking into account diffusion of carriers. Feedback from the external reflector is modeled using Fresnel integration.

RESUMO

A compact all solid state continuous-wave biphoton source, tunable around 488 nm, for quantum spectroscopic applications based on a frequency doubled diode laser system is presented. Copolarized photon pairs in the fundamental transversal mode could be generated at 976 nm by spontaneous parametric down conversion inside a type-0 quasi phase matched periodically poled lithium niobate waveguide crystal with an efficiency of 8-10(-6). A high flux rate greater than 10(7) photon pairs per second has been achieved at pump powers in the muW range resulting in more than 7-10(9) photon pairs/s-mW. Further a detailed investigation of the spectral behavior and the flux rate as a function of the detuning from the degenerated case is presented.

RESUMO

An antireflection-coated broad-area laser diode with an emitter size of 400 microm x 1 microm and a chip length of 1500 microm is operated in a simple external cavity. For wavelength stabilization and to narrow the bandwidth a diffraction grating in a Littrow configuration is used. At an injection current of 9 A up to 6.8 W of optical output power and a resulting slope efficiency of 0.8 W/A could be achieved. Further, the bandwidth could be narrowed to 100 pm (FWHM), and a tuning range of 40 nm around 976 nm was obtained.

RESUMO

In the structure of the title compound, [Ir(2)Cl(3)H(2)(C(36)H(28)P(2))(2)]BF(4) x 2 CH(2)Cl(2), the bimetallic cation features a confacial bioctahedral structure that is held together by three bridging chloride ions and is very close to C(2) symmetric. The hydrides are in a syn orientation (trans to the same halide bridge), and the chelating bis(phosphine) atropisomers display a racemic (R,R)/(S,S) configuration. Because of the high trans-bond-weakening influence of the hydride ligands, the Ir-Cl bonds trans to Ir-H [2.5262 (7) and 2.5365 (7) A] are significantly longer than those opposite the Ir-P linkages [2.4287 (7)-2.4672 (8) A]. The Ir-P distances vary between 2.2464 (9) and 2.2565 (8) A. This study illustrates the usefulness of sterically demanding biaryl-based P(2) ligands in the synthesis of halide-bridged Ir(2) complexes, which are valuable precursors of versatile catalysts for homogeneous C=O hydrogenation.

RESUMO

A continuous-wave distributed feedback diode laser emitting at 976 nm was frequency doubled by the use of a periodically poled lithium niobate waveguide crystal with a channel size of 3 microm x 5 microm and an interaction length of 10 mm. A laser to waveguide coupling efficiency of 75% could be achieved resulting in 304 mW of incident infrared light inside the waveguide. Blue laser light emission of 159 mW at 488 nm has been generated, which equals to a conversion efficiency of 52%. The resulting wall plug efficiency was 7.4%.

RESUMO

A laser system that is based on second-harmonic generation of a broad area laser diode and provides 23.2 mW of diffraction-limited light with narrow bandwidth is described. It is tunable from 487.4 to 489 nm. The broad area laser diode is frequency stabilized in an external cavity that yields 800 mW of diffraction-limited light. This infrared light is converted into the visible by use of a 1 cm periodically poled MgO:LiNbO(3) bulk crystal with a measured single-pass conversion efficiency of up to 3.6%/W x cm.

RESUMO

A frequency stabilized single broad area laser in a V-shaped external cavity is used for Second Harmonic Generation (SHG) in a waveguide channel with dimensions of 3 mum x 5 mum x 10 mm of a PPMgO: LN crystal. A maximum coupling efficiency of 63% could be obtained. An optical output power of 100.4 mW of visible light at 488 nm could be generated with 265 mW of coupled infrared light. This results in a single pass conversion efficiency of 37.8%. No photorefractive damage or saturation effects were observed.

RESUMO

In extension to known concepts of wavelength-multiplexing diode laser arrays, a new external cavity is presented. The setup simultaneously improves the beam quality of each single emitter of a standard 25 emitter broad-area stripe laser bar and spectrally superimposes the 25 beams into one. By using this external resonator in an "off-axis" arrangement, beam qualities of Mslow2<14 and Mfast2<3 with optical powers in excess of 10 W in cw operation are obtained.

RESUMO

A pulsed, diode-laser-pumped Nd:YAG master oscillator power amplifier (MOPA) in rod geometry, frequency stabilized with a modified Pound-Drever-Hall scheme is presented. The apparatus delivers 33-ns pulses with a maximum pulse energy of 0.5 J at 1064 nm. The system was set up in two different configurations for repetition rates of 100 or 250 Hz. The beam quality was measured to be 1.5 times the diffraction limit at a pulse energy of 405 mJ and a repetition rate of 100 Hz. At 250 Hz with the same pulse energy, the M2 was better than 2.1. The radiation is frequency converted with an efficiency of 50% to 532 nm. This MOPA system will be the pump laser of transmitters for a variety of high-end, scanning lidar systems.

RESUMO

Intermolecular electron transfer is investigated in a dye-doped polyelectrolyte (PE) multilayer film. Hollow PE capsules, with a mean diameter of 2 microm, were prepared by stepwise adsorption of a pyrene (PY)-labeled polyanion and various polycations onto charged colloids and subsequent dissolution of the colloidal core. The high concentration of dye molecules within the capsule wall and the control of the medium polarity on a nanometer length scale are proposed to facilitate light-induced charge separation over distances of a few nanometers. In particular, a PY-labeled poly(styrene sulfonate) (PSS-PY) has been synthesized and used as polyanion for the polyelectrolyte capsule preparation. A polarity gradient across the wall of the PE shells is assumed to be achieved by adsorbing diverse polycations at different film positions. The high effective film area followed by high optical density of the PE capsule solution enables time-resolved optical spectroscopy. Using pulsed excited state absorption (ESA) the transient absorption peaks of the radical anion and cation state of pyrene were measured, respectively. In the presence of additional electron donor (or acceptor) molecules in the capsule solution the pyrene anion (cation) is observed in the ESA spectra, while both transient states are seen if no additional molecules are present. These results are interpreted as an electron transfer from pyrene to the donor (acceptor) molecule or between two pyrene molecules. An asymmetry of the electron donor and electron acceptor efficiency was observed when multilayer shells were used that are supposed to carry an internal polarity gradient.

RESUMO

Phase-conjugating stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) mirrors are frequently used to improve the brightness of solid-state lasers. With a scheme for designing fiber amplifiers as SBS phase conjugators the power requirements can be decreased by orders of magnitude; yet only low coherence is required, and high fidelity is reached. A peak power of 5 W was demonstrated to be sufficient for optical SBS phase conjugation.

RESUMO

Fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC)-myoglobin conjugates were synthesized with a binding stoichiometry of one to three fluorophores per protein. FITC binding sites were determined by matrix-assisted laser desorption-ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS). Five lysine residues and the N-terminal amino group were identified as preferential binding sites. The ground and excited-state absorption spectra and the fluorescence decay of the conjugates in the native and denatured state of the carrier protein were analyzed. For comparison, unbound FITC and FITC covalently bound to a polysaccharide (dextran) were studied. For FITC, FITC-dextran and the FITC-myoglobin conjugates, only one FITC absorption peak was obtained in the ground state spectrum. Similarly, the excited state absorption (ESA) spectra of unbound FITC and of FITC-dextran showed only one single maximum whereas two maxima were detected for the native FITC-myoglobin conjugates. One of these sub-bands disappeared following urea treatment of the conjugate. We conclude that ESA measurements of extrinsic fluorophores on proteins can be used to monitor different micro-environments of the fluorophore and to distinguish between different conformational states of the labeled protein. This method can be a useful tool for analysing coexisting protein conformations.

RESUMO

Normal diode lasers with average output powers of 1 W or more exhibit bad beam quality and therefore cannot be applied for high-precision applications or nonlinear optics. Therefore an external output coupling mirror was used in our experiments. Diffraction-limited operation was achieved, which yielded 400 mW of power and a factor-of-12 improvement in brightness. With this resonator type 1.1 W of average output power was also obtained, with a beam propagation factor of 2.6 in the slow axis; fast axis emission is always diffraction limited.
