Parents or Peers? Predictors of Prosocial Behavior and Aggression: A Longitudinal Study.

The aim of this longitudinal study was to determine the associations among peer attachment, warmth from the mother and father, strict control by the mother and father, prosocial behavior, and physical and verbal aggression in adolescence. Few longitudinal studies have examined how peer attachment and parenting styles of the mother and father relate to prosocial behavior and aggression. Participants were 192 boys and 255 girls (M = 14.70 years; SD = 0.68) in wave 1. In the study participated 11 schools. For three successive years, participants reported on their fathers' and mothers' warmth and strict control, peer attachment, prosocial behavior, and aggression. Structural equations modeling was employed to explore two longitudinal models. Results show the influence of the mother and father on prosocial and aggression during adolescence. In addition, strong peer attachment predicted prosocial behavior in subsequent years. Therefore, the findings indicate that despite the increasingly important role of friends during the transition from childhood to adolescence, parenting styles play a key role in the personal and social development of their children. Programs aimed at preventing aggression should be designed considering the importance of stimulating and strengthening prosocial behavior, peer attachment and a family environment of affect, support and communication.

La investigación que se presenta se realiza sobre una muestra aleatoria de 531 adolescentes de edades comprendidas entre los 12 y 16 años, que representan a la población general. Ésta persigue un doble objetivo, el primero trata de analizar la relación que mantienen la conducta prosocial o la conducta agresiva con la estabilidad emocional. El segundo objetivo se centra en estudiar el peso que ejercen los factores estructurales de la personalidad, así como los relacionados con la crianza en la disposición prosocial del sujeto. Los resultados muestran que la estabilidad emocional constituye un factor fundamental para establecer relaciones empáticas y positivas con el entorno; a su vez aparece como un factor de riesgo relacionado con las manifestaciones de agresividad física y verbal del sujeto. Asimismo, los factores estructurales de la personalidad de Amistad y Conciencia son los que tienen mayor peso en las conductas altruistas y prosociales. En este sentido, la capacidad del sujeto de empatizar y de cooperar ante las necesidades de los otros, así como la aptitud de autorregulación y de autoorganización de la conducta se relacionan con la prosocialidad (AU)

Hilgard’s Introduction to Psychology has been published in 13 editions, the first in 1953 and the last in the year 2000. The analysis of the successive editions of this text provides information regarding the changes that have taken place within the field of psychology during the last half of the 20th century. The contents of the text that are analyzed in this study include the definition of psychology that appears throughout this period, the emphasis that is given to the various psychological processes and the areas of psychology, and the presence of authors with a large number of works cited in the successive editions (AU)

La introducción a la Psicología de Hilgard ha sido publicada en 13 ediciones, la primera en 1953 y la última en el año 2000. El análisis de las sucesivas ediciones de este testo proporciona información en relación a los cambios que han tenido lugar dentro del campo de la psicología durante la última parte del siglo XX.
