RESUMO

Solid-state lithium-oxygen (Li-O2 ) batteries have been widely recognized as one of the candidates for the next-generation of energy storage batteries. However, the development of solid-state Li-O2 batteries has been hindered by the lack of solid-state electrolyte (SSE) with high ionic conductivity at room temperature, high Li+ transference number, and the high stability to air. Herein, the organic molecular porous solid cucurbit[7]uril (CB[7]) with one-dimensional (1D) ion migration channels is developed as the SSE for solid-state Li-O2 batteries. Taking advantage of the 1D ion migration channel for Li+ conduction, CB[7] SSE achieves high ionic conductivity (2.45 × 10-4 S cm-1 at 25 °C). Moreover, the noncovalent interactions facilitated the immobilization of anions, realizing a high Li+ transference number (tLi + = 0.81) and Li+ uniform distribution. The CB[7] SSE also shows a wide electrochemical stability window of 0-4.65 V and high thermal stability and chemical stability, as well as realizes stable Li+ plating/stripping (more than 1000 h at 0.3 mA cm-2 ). As a result, the CB[7] SSE endows solid-state Li-O2 batteries with superior rate capability and long-term discharge/charge stability (up to 500 h). This design strategy of CB[7] SSE paves the way for stable and efficient solid-state Li-O2 batteries toward practical applications.

RESUMO

Gorham-Stout disease is an extremely rare disease characterized by progressive massive osteolysis with different clinical manifestations. The pathology is characterized by vascular proliferation, leading to destruction and resorption of the bone matrix, but the exact etiology is unknown. It can occur in any part of the body, with few reports of cases involving the maxillofacial region. Herein, the authors report a case of Gorham-Stout disease of the mandible, which started by affecting the alveolar bone and progressed to the mandibular marginal branches and even to the implanted vascularized free fibula.

RESUMO

Solid-state lithium (Li) batteries promise both high energy density and safety while existing solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) fail to satisfy the rigorous requirements of battery operations. Herein, novel polyoxometalate SSEs, Li3 PW12 O40 and Li3 PMo12 O40 , are synthesized, which exhibit excellent interfacial compatibility with electrodes and chemical stability, overcoming the limitations of conventional SSEs. A high ionic conductivity of 0.89 mS cm-1 and a low activation energy of 0.23 eV are obtained due to the optimized three-dimensional Li+ migration network of Li3 PW12 O40 . Li3 PW12 O40 exhibits a wide window of electrochemical stability that can both accommodate the Li anode and high-voltage cathodes. As a result, all-solid-state Li metal batteries fabricated with Li/Li3 PW12 O40 /LiNi0.5 Co0.2 Mn0.3 O2 display a stable cycling up to 100 cycles with a cutoff voltage of 4.35 V and an areal capacity of more than 4 mAh cm-2 , as well as a cost-competitive SSEs price of $5.68 kg-1 . Moreover, Li3 PMo12 O40 homologous to Li3 PW12 O40 was obtained via isomorphous substitution, which formed a low-resistance interface with Li3 PW12 O40 . Applications of Li3 PW12 O40 and Li3 PMo12 O40 in Li-air batteries further demonstrate that long cycle life (650 cycles) can be achieved. This strategy provides a facile, low-cost strategy to construct efficient and scalable solid polyoxometalate electrolytes for high-energy solid-state Li metal batteries.

RESUMO

Solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) with high ionic conductivity and superior stability are considered to be a key technology for the safe operation of solid-state lithium batteries. However, current SSEs are incapable of meeting the requirements for practical solid-state lithium batteries. Here we report a general strategy for achieving high-performance SSEs by engineering polymers of intrinsic microporosity (PIMs). Taking advantage of the interconnected ion pathways generated from the ionizable groups, high ionic conductivity (1.06×10-3  S cm-1 at 25 °C) is achieved for the PIMs-based SSEs. The mechanically strong (50.0 MPa) and non-flammable SSEs combine the two superiorities of outstanding Li+ conductivity and electrochemical stability, which can restrain the dendrite growth and prevent Li symmetric batteries from short-circuiting even after more than 2200 h cycling. Benefiting from the rational design of SSEs, PIMs-based SSEs Li-metal batteries can achieve good cycling performance and superior feasibility in a series of withstand abuse tests including bending, cutting, and penetration. Moreover, the PIMs-based SSEs endow high specific capacity (11307 mAh g-1 ) and long-term discharge/charge stability (247 cycles) for solid-state Li-O2 batteries. The PIMs-based SSEs present a powerful strategy for enabling safe operation of high-energy solid-state batteries.

RESUMO

Resection of oral and maxillofacial tumors is often accompanied by the inferior alveolar nerve neurectomy, resulting in abnormal sensation in lower lip. It is generally believed that spontaneous sensory recovery in this nerve injury is difficult. However, during our follow-up, patients with inferior alveolar nerve sacrifice showed different degrees of lower lip sensory recovery. In this study, a prospective cohort study was conducted to demonstrate this phenomenon and analyze the factors influencing sensory recovery. A mental nerve transection model of Thy1-YFP mice and tissue clearing technique were used to explore possible mechanisms in this process. Gene silencing and overexpression experiments were then conducted to detect the changes in cell morphology and molecular markers. In our follow-up, 75% of patients with unilateral inferior alveolar nerve neurectomy had complete sensory recovery of the lower lip 12 months postoperatively. Patients with younger age, malignant tumors, and preservation of ipsilateral buccal and lingual nerves had a shorter recovery time. The buccal nerve collateral sprouting compensation was observed in the lower lip tissue of Thy1-YFP mice. ApoD was demonstrated to be involved in axon growth and peripheral nerve sensory recovery in the animal model. TGF-ß inhibited the expression of STAT3 and the transcription of ApoD in Schwann cells through Zfp423. Overall, after sacrificing the inferior alveolar nerve, the collateral compensation of the ipsilateral buccal nerve could innervate the sensation. And this process was regulated by TGF-ß-Zfp423-ApoD pathway.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The failure of novel therapies effective in preclinical animal models largely reflects the fact that current models do not really mimic the pathological/therapeutic features of glioblastoma (GBM), in which the most effective temozolomide chemoradiotherapy (RT/TMZ) regimen can only slightly extend survival. How to improve RT/TMZ efficacy remains a major challenge in clinic. METHODS: Syngeneic G422TN-GBM model mice were subject to RT/TMZ, surgery, piperlongumine (PL), αPD1, glutathione. Metabolomics or transcriptomics data from G422TN-GBM and human GBM were used for gene enrichment analysis and estimation of ROS generation/scavenging balance, oxidative stress damage, inflammation and immune cell infiltration. Overall survival, bioluminescent imaging, immunohistochemistry, and immunofluorescence staining were used to examine therapeutic efficacy and mechanisms of action. RESULTS: Here we identified that glutathione metabolism was most significantly altered in metabolomics analysis upon RT/TMZ therapies in a truly refractory and reliable mouse triple-negative GBM (G422TN) preclinical model. Consistently, ROS generators/scavengers were highly dysregulated in both G422TN-tumor and human GBM. The ROS-inducer PL synergized surgery/TMZ, surgery/RT/TMZ or RT/TMZ to achieve long-term survival (LTS) in G422TN-mice, but only one LTS-mouse from RT/TMZ/PL therapy passed the rechallenging phase (immune cure). Furthermore, the immunotherapy of RT/TMZ/PL plus anti-PD-1 antibody (αPD1) doubled LTS (50%) and immune-cured (25%) mice. Glutathione completely abolished PL-synergistic effects. Mechanistically, ROS reduction was associated with RT/TMZ-resistance. PL restored ROS level (mainly via reversing Duox2/Gpx2), activated oxidative stress/inflammation/immune responses signature genes, reduced cancer cell proliferation/invasion, increased apoptosis and CD3+/CD4+/CD8+ T-lymphocytes in G422TN-tumor on the basis of RT/TMZ regimen. CONCLUSION: Our findings demonstrate that PL reverses RT/TMZ-reduced ROS and synergistically resets tumor microenvironment to cure GBM. RT/TMZ/PL or RT/TMZ/PL/αPD1 exacts effective immune cure in refractory GBM, deserving a priority for clinical trials.

RESUMO

Background: There is commonly a discrepancy between conference abstracts and published article abstracts in prosthodontic randomized controlled trials (RCTs), which may mislead the scholars those attend conferences. Objective: To identify the characteristics predicting inconsistency between conference abstracts and published article abstracts in prosthodontic RCTs. Methods: The conference abstracts of prosthodontic RCTs presented at the IADR general sessions from 2002 to 2015 were searched. Electronic searches of MEDLINE, EMBASE, the Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar databases were conducted to match full-text publications for conference abstracts. Two investigators extracted basic characteristics and assessed the consistency and reporting quality independently and in duplicate. The linear regression model was used to analyze the predictors of inconsistency. Results: A total of 147 conference abstracts were matched with published articles. Results for the secondary outcome measure, Statistical analysis, and precision measure were less than 50% consistent, and even nearly 5% of the studies had opposite conclusions. Multiple linear regression analysis showed that three factors were correlated with lower inconsistency, including continent of origin (p = 0.011), presentation type (p = 0.017), and difference in reporting quality (p = 0.013). Conclusion: Conference attendees should cautiously treat the findings of the conference abstracts. Researchers should improve the precision of the information delivered at conferences. We recommend the authors of RCTs to explain the primary difference between conference abstracts and article abstracts.

RESUMO

Background/purpose: Analysis of endoplasmic reticulum stress (ERS)-related long noncoding RNAs (LncRNAs) may enable prognostic stratification in patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). This study aimed to comprehensively analyze the ERS-related LncRNAs signature and its effects on the prognosis, tumorigenesis, and tumor immune microenvironment in HNSCC. Materials and methods: The transcriptome data of HNSCC were obtained from TCGA. Least absolute shrinkage selection operator algorithm, and multivariate Cox regression were used to screen LncRNAs for the signature construction. Somatic mutation, gene enrichment, and immune infiltration analyses were further performed. Results: 458 ERS-related LncRNAs were identified and 55 of which were correlated with HNSCC prognosis. Ten ERS-related LncRNAs were selected to establish a risk prediction signature. When dividing patients into high-risk and low-risk groups by signature score, high-risk group correlated with worse survival rates (hazard ratio = 1.211; 95% confidence interval 1.123-1.306, P < 0.001). The area under the curve was 0.751 and 0.716 in the training and validation cohorts at 3-year. Moreover, high-risk group have increased somatic mutation rates and reduced infiltration abundancy of B cells and CD8+ T cells. Conclusion: The prognostic signature based on ERS-related LncRNAs may serve as a predictor of altered oncogene mutations and immune microenvironment, which provided an insight into the relationship between ERS, LncRNAs, and tumor progression.

RESUMO

The demand for high-energy sustainable rechargeable batteries has motivated the development of lithium-oxygen (Li-O2) batteries. However, the inherent safety issues of liquid electrolytes and the sluggish reaction kinetics of existing cathodes remain fundamental challenges. Herein, we demonstrate a promising photo-assisted solid-state Li-O2 battery based on metal-organic framework-derived mixed ionic/electronic conductors, which simultaneously serve as the solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) and the cathode. The mixed conductors could effectively harvest ultraviolet-visible light to generate numerous photoelectrons and holes, which is favorable to participate in the electrochemical reaction, contributing to greatly improved reaction kinetics. According to the study on conduction behavior, we discover that the mixed conductors as SSEs possess outstanding Li+ conductivity (1.52 × 10-4 S cm-1 at 25 °C) and superior chemical/electrochemical stability (especially toward H2O, O2-, etc.). Application of mixed ionic electronic conductors in photo-assisted solid-state Li-O2 batteries further reveals that a high energy efficiency (94.2%) and a long life (320 cycles) can be achieved with a simultaneous design of SSEs and cathodes. The achievements present the widespread universality in accelerating the development of safe and high-performance solid-state batteries.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Bronchiolar adenoma (BA) and ciliated muconodular papillary tumor are rare tumors that have bilayered cell proliferation and continuous expression of p40 and CK5/6 in the basal cell layer. Diagnosis is difficult because of the limited knowledge of these tumors and their morphological similarities to malignant tumors, including invasive mucinous adenocarcinoma, especially based on the histopathology of intraoperative frozen sections. These tumors are now considered to be benign neoplasms, with malignant transformation reported in only a few cases. CASE SUMMARY: A 57-year-old woman presented with a 17.0 mm × 7.0 mm nodule in the lower lobe of the left lung. Hematoxylin-eosin staining and immunohistochemistry of a surgical specimen were performed. The tumor consisted of a BA area and a mucinous adenocarcinoma (MA) area. In the BA area, the tumor had a bilayered structure of luminal cells and basal cells. The basal cells were positive for CK5/6 and p40, but the MA area was negative for these biomarkers. The Ki-67 proliferation index was low (1%-2%). The patient was diagnosed with BA accompanied by MA, and had a favorable outcome. CONCLUSION: The present study indicated that BA may be carcinogenic, and suggests that clinicians should be aware of its potential for malignant transformation.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Depression is a prevalent and recurrent psychiatric disorder. Aberrant neural structure and activity play fundamental roles in the occurrence of depression. Mitotic arrest deficient protein (MAD2B) is highly expressed in neurons and may be implicated in synaptic plasticity in the central nervous system. However, the effect of MAD2B in depression, as well as the related molecular mechanism, is uncertain. METHODS: Here, we employed mouse models of depression induced by chronic unpredictable stress exposure or corticosterone (CORT) stimulation. Depression-like behaviors in mice were evaluated by sucrose preference, forced swimming, and tail suspension tests. Hippocampal MAD2B overexpression was mediated by adeno-associated virus 8 containing enhanced green fluorescent protein. In vitro primary neuronal cells were obtained from the hippocampus of rat embryos and were treated with CORT, and MAD2B overexpression was performed using lentivirus. MAD2B and glutamate metabotropic receptor 4 (GRM4) levels were evaluated by western blots and quantitative PCR. Primary neuronal miR-29b-3p expression was detected by quantitative PCR. RESULTS: MAD2B expression was reduced in the hippocampus in mice exhibiting depressive-like behaviors. However, hippocampal MAD2B overexpression protected mice from developing either chronic unpredictable stress- or CORT-induced depression-like behaviors, an effect associated with reduced expression of GRM4, a presynaptic receptor involved in depression. Moreover, MAD2B overexpression in primary neuronal cells also decreased GRM4 expression while enhancing the level of miR-29b-3p; this phenomenon was also observed under CORT stimulation. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest an important role of neuronal MAD2B in the pathogenesis of depression via the miR-29b-3p/GRM4 signaling pathway. MAD2B could be a potential therapeutic target for depressive disorders.

RESUMO

In vessel-depleted neck, salvage free flap transfer for head and neck reconstruction is challenging because the difficulty of selecting the recipient vessel and the discrepancy of vessel diameters. Here, the authors describe a novel technique for vascular anastomosis, which allows 2 thin donor veins end-to-end anastomosed with the larger recipient vein. This II-Y-shaped vascular anastomosis for free flap reconstruction were performed at Department of Head and Neck Surgery, Oral and Maxillofacial Oncology, West China Stomatology Hospital, Sichuan University. The patient received anterolateral thigh flap transfer after tumor excision. The ligated stump of external jugular vein was anastomosed to the enlarged accompanying veins of the anterolateral thigh flap. The flap survived completely without complications. The II-Y-shaped vascular anastomosis procedures were easy to perform and no complications were observed. Result suggests this novel technique could be useful in free flap transfer in vessel-depleted neck as an efficient way of adjusting the limited diameters.

RESUMO

As an important biological resource of a country or region, human genetic resources (HGR) are increasingly attracting attention and concern from many countries internationally, and even have been elevated to the dimension of national sovereignty by many countries. As a large country with rich and diverse HGR, relevant regulatory work in China started relatively late compared to foreign countries, but has developed rapidly. However, looking around the world, there is still room for further improvement and development of domestic HGR regulation. By reviewing the regulatory legislation of HGR in some countries abroad, this paper sorted out their advanced experience and highlighted measures in detail, and summarized their deep-seated legislative guidance. A detailed analysis and evaluation were conducted from seven aspects:the advanced level of HGR legislation and the enhancement of legal effectiveness, the systematization and systematization of policies and regulations, the unification of platforms and relevant standards, the highlight of the concept of ethics and the rule of law, the strengthening of anti-discrimination protection, the special protection of major human genetic family resources and national special protection areas of HGR, and the establishment of principled consensus or agreement on HGR in international and local regions, to provide reference for the construction of regulatory policies and legal systems for HGR in China.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: There may be an association between periodontitis and cardiovascular disease (CVD); however, the evidence so far has been uncertain about whether periodontal therapy can help prevent CVD in people diagnosed with chronic periodontitis. This is the third update of a review originally published in 2014, and most recently updated in 2019. Although there is a new multidimensional staging and grading system for periodontitis, we have retained the label 'chronic periodontitis' in this version of the review since available studies are based on the previous classification system. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the effects of periodontal therapy for primary or secondary prevention of CVD in people with chronic periodontitis. SEARCH METHODS: An information specialist searched five bibliographic databases up to 17 November 2021 and additional search methods were used to identify published, unpublished, and ongoing studies. We also searched the Chinese BioMedical Literature Database, the China National Knowledge Infrastructure, the VIP database, and Sciencepaper Online to March 2022. SELECTION CRITERIA: We included randomised controlled trials (RCTs) that compared active periodontal therapy to no periodontal treatment or a different periodontal treatment. We included studies of participants with a diagnosis of chronic periodontitis, either with CVD (secondary prevention studies) or without CVD (primary prevention studies). DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS: Two review authors carried out the study identification, data extraction, and 'Risk of bias' assessment independently and in duplicate. They resolved any discrepancies by discussion, or with a third review author. We adopted a formal pilot-tested data extraction form, and used the Cochrane tool to assess the risk of bias in the studies. We used GRADE criteria to assess the certainty of the evidence. MAIN RESULTS: There are no new completed RCTs on this topic since we published our last update in 2019. We included two RCTs in the review. One study focused on the primary prevention of CVD, and the other addressed secondary prevention. We evaluated both as being at high risk of bias. Our primary outcomes of interest were death (all-cause and CVD-related) and all cardiovascular events, measured at one-year follow-up or longer. For primary prevention of CVD in participants with periodontitis and metabolic syndrome, one study (165 participants) provided very low-certainty evidence. There was only one death in the study; we were unable to determine whether scaling and root planning plus amoxicillin and metronidazole could reduce incidence of all-cause death (Peto odds ratio (OR) 7.48, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.15 to 376.98), or all CVD-related death (Peto OR 7.48, 95% CI 0.15 to 376.98). We could not exclude the possibility that scaling and root planning plus amoxicillin and metronidazole could increase cardiovascular events (Peto OR 7.77, 95% CI 1.07 to 56.1) compared with supragingival scaling measured at 12-month follow-up. For secondary prevention of CVD, one pilot study randomised 303 participants to receive scaling and root planning plus oral hygiene instruction (periodontal treatment) or oral hygiene instruction plus a copy of radiographs and recommendation to follow-up with a dentist (community care). As cardiovascular events had been measured for different time periods of between 6 and 25 months, and only 37 participants were available with at least one-year follow-up, we did not consider the data to be sufficiently robust for inclusion in this review. The study did not evaluate all-cause death and all CVD-related death. We are unable to draw any conclusions about the effects of periodontal therapy on secondary prevention of CVD. AUTHORS' CONCLUSIONS: For primary prevention of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in people diagnosed with periodontitis and metabolic syndrome, very low-certainty evidence was inconclusive about the effects of scaling and root planning plus antibiotics compared to supragingival scaling. There is no reliable evidence available regarding secondary prevention of CVD in people diagnosed with chronic periodontitis and CVD. Further trials are needed to reach conclusions about whether treatment for periodontal disease can help prevent occurrence or recurrence of CVD.

RESUMO

Epithelioid inflammatory myofibroblastic sarcoma (EIMS) is a rare and aggressive inflammatory myofibroblastic tumour (IMT) variant. This report identifies the first case of EIMS with leukemoid reaction. This is also the first case in which pancreatic infiltration occurred from the disease onset. A 14-year male patient presented with an 18×18×10 cm mass at the retroperitoneal space and a white blood cell (WBC) count of 85×109/L. The mass and the invaded tissues were surgically removed with tumour-free margins. Histopathology and bone marrow aspiration confirmed the diagnosis of EIMS with leukemoid reaction. The tumour recurred with hepatic and pulmonary metastasis one month after the surgery. WBC count also increased progressively with the tumour recurrence. There is no consensus on the treatment of EIMS. Since ALK rearrangement presents in all the EIMS cases, surgical resection combined with crizotinib or other targeted drugs may improve the prognosis. Key Words: Sarcoma, Soft tissue neoplasms, Leukemoid reaction, Crizotinib.

RESUMO

Background: Complete resection (CR) serves as the standard of surgical treatment for retroperitoneal liposarcoma (RPLS). Unfortunately, even at referral centers, recurrence rates are high, and CR may not address multifocal diseases, which are a common phenomenon in RPLS. We sought to retrospectively compare the clinical outcomes of RPLS patients treated with total (ipsilateral) retroperitoneal lipectomy (TRL) and CR. Because TRL remove potentially multifocal tumors in the fat, patients may have a better prognosis than CR. Methods: Patients with primary/first-recurrent RPLS who had been treated at 5 referral centers were recruited from December 2014 to June 2018. Multivariable Cox regression analyses were conducted to determine the effects of demographic, operative, and clinicopathological variables on the following primary endpoints: local recurrence (LR), local recurrence-free survival (LRFS), and overall survival (OS). Results: A total of 134 patients were enrolled in this retrospective study, 53 of whom underwent TRL, and 81 of whom underwent CR. The 2 groups were comparable in terms of age, gender, presentation (primary vs. first-recurrent RPLS), number of tumors (unifocal vs. multifocal) at presentation, and Fédération Nationale des Centres de Lutte Contre le Cancer (FNCLCC) grade. The TRL group had higher levels of preoperative hemoglobin (Hb) (13 vs. 12.5 g/dL; P=0.008) and a lower amount of intraoperative blood loss (400 vs. 500 mL; P=0.034), but there were no significant differences in the length of hospital stay (23 vs. 22 d; P=0.47) or complications (32 vs. 30; P=0.82) between the 2 groups. In a subset of patients with multifocal tumors at initial presentation, OS was more prolonged in those treated with TRL than those treated with CR (P=0.0272). Based on the multivariable analysis, primary liposarcoma and a low FNCLCC grade were associated with decreased LR and improved OS. Conclusions: TRL is a safe procedure that positively affects the OS of patients with multifocal RPLS. This novel strategy deserves further investigation in prospective studies.

RESUMO

DNA methylation pattern in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) remains poorly described. This study aimed to perform a genome-wide integrated analysis of the transcriptome and methylome and assess the efficacy of their prognostic signature model in patients with OSCC. We analyzed transcriptome and methylome data from 391 OSCC samples and 41 adjacent normal samples. A total of 8074 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and 10,084 differentially expressed CpGs (DMCpGs) were identified. Then 241 DEGs with DMCpGs were identified. According to the prognostic analysis, the prognostic signature of methylation-related differentially expressed genes (mrDEGPS) was established. mrDEGPS consisted of seven prognostic methylation-related genes, including ESRRG, CCNA1, SLC20A1, COL6A6, FCGBP, CDKN2A, and ZNF43. mrDEGPS was a significant stratification factor of survival (P < 0.00001) irrespective of the clinical stage. The immune effector components, including B cells, CD4+ T cells, and CD8+ T cells, were decreased in the tumor environment of patients with high mrDEGPS. Immune checkpoint expressions, including CTLA-4, PD-1, LAG3, LGALS9, HAVCR2, and TIGHT, were comprehensively elevated (P < 0.001). The estimated half-maximal inhibitory concentration difference between low- and high-risk patients was inconsistent among chemotherapeutic drugs. In conclusion, the transcriptome-methylome interaction pattern in OSCC is complex. mrDEGPS can predict patient survival and responses to immunotherapy and chemotherapy and facilitate clinical decision-making in patients with OSCC.

RESUMO

Objective: To summarize the phenotypes of epilepsy in patients with MBD5 gene variants. Methods: A total of 9 epileptic patients, who were treated in the Department of Pediatrics, Peking University First Hospital from July 2016 to September 2021 and detected with MBD5 gene pathogenic variants, were enrolled. The features of clinical manifestations, electroencephalogram (EEG), and neuroimaging were analyzed retrospectively. Results: Among 9 patients, 6 were male and 3 were female. Age at seizure onset ranged from 5 to 89 months. Multiple seizure types were observed, including generalized tonic clonic seizures (GTCS) in 7 patients, myoclonic seizures in 5 patients, focal seizures in 5 patients, atypical absence seizures in 3 patients, atonic seizures in 2 patients, myoclonus absence seizures in 1 patient, epileptic spasms in 1 patient, and tonic seizures in 1 patient. There were 8 patients with multiple seizure types, 2 patients with sensitivity to fever and 5 patients with clustering of seizures. Two patients had a history of status epilepticus. All patients had developmental delay before seizure onset. Nine patients had obvious language delay, and 6 patients had autism-like manifestations. Five patients had slow background activity in EEG. Interictal EEG showed abnormal discharges in 9 patients. Brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was normal in all patients. A total of 9 epileptic patients carried MBD5 gene variants, all of them were de novo variants. There were MBD5 gene overall heterozygous deletion in 1 patient, large fragment deletions including MBD5 gene in 3 patients and single nucleotide variations (c.300C>A/p.C100X, c.1775delA/p.N592Tfs*29, c.1759C>T/p.Q587X, c.150_151del/p.Lys51Asnfs*6, c.113+1G>C) in 5 patients. The age at last follow-up ranged from 2 years and 9 months to 11 years and 11 months. At the last follow-up, 2 patients were seizure-free for more than 11 months to 4 years 6 months, 7 patients still had seizures. Conclusions: The initial seizure onset in patients with MBD5 gene variants usually occurs in infancy. Most patients have multiple seizure types. The seizures may be fever sensitive and clustered. Developmental delays, language impairments, and autistic behaviors are common. MBD5 gene variants include single nucleotide variations and fragment deletions. Epilepsy associated with MBD5 gene variants is usually refractory.

RESUMO

Peripheral odontogenic keratocysts are rarely observed, and cases of odontogenic keratocysts of buccal soft tissues are even rarer. This study was performed to present two rare cases of odontogenic keratocysts in buccal soft tissues and review related literature.

RESUMO

The effect of projectile nose shape on the ballistic performance of the ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) composite was studied through experiments and simulations. Eight projectiles such as conical, flat, hemispherical, and ogival nose projectiles were used in this study. The deformation process, failure mechanisms, and the specific energy absorption (SEA) ability were systematically investigated for analyzing the ballistic responses on the projectile and the UHMWPE composite. The results showed that the projectile nose shape could invoke different penetration mechanisms on the composite. The sharper nose projectile tended to shear through the laminate, causing localized damage zone on the composite. For the blunt nose projectile penetration, the primary deformation features were the combination of shear plugging, tensile deformation, and large area delamination. The maximum value of specific energy absorption (SEA) was 290 J/(kg/m2) for the flat nose projectile penetration, about 3.8 times higher than that for the 30° conical nose projectile. Furthermore, a ballistic resistance analytical model was built based on the cavity expansion theory to predict the energy absorption ability of the UHMWPE composite. The model exhibited a good match between the ballistic resistance curves in simulations with the SEA ability of the UHMWPE composite in experiments.
