RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Obesity is one of the most prevalent health problems in the canine population. While haemostatic parameters and markers of endothelial function have been evaluated in various disease conditions in dogs, there are no studies of these markers in canine obesity. This study was designed to evaluate the effect of naturally gained weight excess and obesity on inflammatory, hemostatic and endothelial biomarkers in dogs. A total of 37 overweight and obese dogs were compared with 28 normal weight dogs. RESULTS: Overweight and obese dogs had significantly elevated concentrations of serum interleukin-6 (IL-6) and C-reactive protein (hsCRP). Number of platelets, activity of factor X and factor VII were significantly higher, while activated partial thromboplastine time (aPTT) and soluble plasminogen activator receptor (suPAR) were significantly decreased. Statistical analysis of high mobility group box - 1 protein (HMGB-1), soluble intercellular adhesive molecule -1 (sICAM-1) and plasminogen activator inhibitor type 1 (PAI-1) concentrations did not show significant differences between the total overweight and obese group and the normal weight group of dogs. CONCLUSIONS: Analytical changes in the dogs in our study reflects that weight excess in dogs can be associated with a chronic low degree of inflammation and a hypercoagulable state, where primary and secondary hemostasis are both affected. However obesity is not associated with impairment of endothelial function in dogs.

RESUMO

Emergence patterns of blackflies (Diptera: Simuliidae) were investigated for 2 years at nine sites in the Plitvice Lakes area of Croatia, using pyramid-type traps. A total of 38 012 specimens representing 10 haematophagous species were collected. The dominant species was Simulium angustipes Edwards, 1915, a vector transmitting avian trypanosomes. Water temperature, alkalinity, conductivity and habitat type represented the factors with the greatest degree of influence on blackfly species composition, structure and distribution along a longitudinal gradient of this oligotrophic karstic hydrosystem. Simulium angustipes was highly associated with lake outlets. The blackfly communities at all sites were dominated by species typical of the rhithral zone, but there was a shift in species composition along a longitudinal gradient from the hypocrenal-epirhithral to the epirhithral-metarhithral zone. Multiple generations per year were detected in S. angustipes, whereas in Simulium costatum Friederichs, 1920, the number of generations differed between sites with constant and those with variable water temperature.

RESUMO

This report describes the first case of postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWS) in wild boar in Croatia. During the winter season of 2004, eight wild young piglets (of approximately 2 to 5 months of age) were found dead in a fenced hunting area. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was carried out on mesenteric lymph nodes and all animals yielded positive results. In one of these animals diagnosis of PMWS was established based on the three key diagnostic criteria including the clinical manifestation, moderate lymphoid lesions consisting of lymphocyte depletion and granulomatous inflammation, and detection of the presence of PCV2 genome within the lymphoid lesions by in situ hybridisation (ISH). Three additional wild piglets had also mild PMWS-like lesions and a low amount of PCV2 was also found. No PMWS-like lesions or PCV2 genome were detected in the rest of the wild piglets studied. Three PCR-positive isolates were partially sequenced, which confirmed the diagnosis of PCV2 and demonstrated that the three sequences were genetically identical. The phylogenetic analysis of a representative PCV2 isolate indicated that its sequence (DQ875444) is grouped in a separate branch with Hungarian isolate (AY256460) and differs from any of the annotated sequences.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to assess the oral health condition of Croatian war veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The study included 50 men who experienced combat stress and had been diagnosed with PTSD. They were compared with the group of 50 age-matched men who did not participate in war and did not have PTSD. Xerostomia, oral mucosal lesion, oral hygiene status, dental, and periodontal conditions, as well as temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) were assessed and compared between the groups. Subjects in PTSD group had poorer oral hygiene, and periodontal status compared with the control subjects. Furthermore, they had less teeth than the control group (P = 0.04). Although, there was no statistically significant difference between the groups in Decayed, Missing and Filled Teeth (DMFT) index (P = 0.36), PTSD group had more decayed and missing teeth, but less filled teeth (P < 0.05 for all). According the Research Diagnosis Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorder (RDC/TMD), PTSD patients had more TMD diagnoses compared with the control subjects. The most prevalent diagnosis was myofascial pain (48%) in PTSD group, while in the control group it was disc displacement with reduction (8%). It can be concluded that the oral health condition in PTSD patients is significantly affected compared with the control subjects.

RESUMO

The performance characteristics of an ELISA test for trichinellosis in pigs applied to muscle juice was assessed using 314 samples collected from pigs located in endemic areas of Croatia. Peptic digestion was used as the reference method. The diagnostic accuracy of the two compared dilutions (1:10 and 1:100) was considered to be high because the area under the curve (AUC) index was 0.922 and 0.920 for each dilution, respectively. In this study the two graph-receiver operating characteristic (TG-ROC) analysis was used as a tool for selecting cut-off points. Sensitivity, specificity, likelihood ratios, efficiency and Youden's index were used as indices of test accuracy. The cut-off values that minimize overall misclassification cost under an assumption of 3% prevalence were calculated. Our results indicate that the ELISA applied to muscle juice is a highly accurate test and can be adapted to process a large number of samples.

RESUMO

The identification of Trichinella infection in pigs in Croatia has traditionally been done by inspection of individual carcasses. In response to outbreaks of human trichinellosis in the last decade, the Croatian Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry instituted compulsory trichinelloscopic examination of tissue from both commercially and privately slaughtered swine. The purpose of this study was to compare trichinelloscopy and artificial digestion for use in samples containing low numbers of larvae. Each assay was used to test 1,769 field positive samples, 290 of which contained 6 or less larvae per gram of muscle tissue. The sensitivity and specificity of trichinelloscopy with 6 or less l pg was 43.4 and 88%, respectively. kappa-Value as a measure of agreement between trichinelloscopy and artificial digestion was 0.27%. It is noteworthy that a considerable number of the 103 (52%) negative animals on trichinelloscopy contained>or=6l pg which is enough to cause clinical trichinellosis. These findings support other studies that indicate trichinelloscopy is not a method of choice and that it is necessary to implement more sensitive procedures such as artificial digestion.

RESUMO

Cross-sectional investigation was done on seroprevalence of Leishmania sp. infection among apparently healthy dogs in an area where canine leishmaniosis is endemic. Survey included 68 dogs living in the coastal city of Split, and 238 dogs living in 12 villages scattered in the hinterland. Each dog was clinically examined for the presence of some discrete signs compatible with leishmaniosis and by dot-ELISA modification determined the presence of anti-Leishmania antibodies. The titre 1:600 and higher was regarded as positive in the study. The seroprevalence ranged from 0 to 42.85%, depending on the location. 54.34% of the seropositive dogs had moderately enlarged lymph nodes and/or some discrete changes on the skin. In our parasitological study, Leishmania sp. was isolated from several seropositive animals that had some clinical signs and from a few which did not have any. Data analysis revealed that serological positivity to Leishmania sp. was not associated with a dog's outdoor lifestyle and utility, but was associated with the gender and age.

RESUMO

UNLABELLED: The paper discusses same aspects of psychodynamics and regression of social groups. The aims of the study are: 1. to promote the understanding of group processes which point out the presence of complex phenomena within social group and should help group members and a group leader to function on the higher level of sensitivity, capability and effectiveness; 2. to stimulate the knowledge implementation in problem resolving among social groups (organizations). The group psychodynamic, group regression and mechanisms against it, are theoretically based on aspects of psychoanalytic group psychology, using the method of descriptive literature overlook. CONCLUSION: the permanent evaluation of group functioning, group situation and group processes by some group members and by the whole group are conditions for preservation of regressive group phenomena on rather low level, or successful functioning on more mature level, creating the feeling of satisfaction in group and among its members.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Recent studies on the role of Helicobacter pylori in pathogenesis of duodenal ulcers have focused on the mechanism by which H. pylori infections causes exaggerated gastrin release. METHODOLOGY: We compared the gastrin and somatostatin serum values between two groups of patients; 37 H. pylori-positive ones and 29 H. pylori-negative ones. We applied radioimmunoassay technique to determine the gastrin and somatostatin values in serum. H. pylori was confirmed by urease test and by histopathological color according to Giemsa. RESULTS: The level of gastrin in the serum of Helicobacter pylori-positive patients with chronic gastritis were significantly higher in relation to H. pylori-negative patients. The somatostatin concentration in the sera of H. pylori-positive patients with duodenal ulcer (16.27 +/- 9.49 pg/mL) were less in comparison with those without duodenal ulcer (23.25 +/- 13.59 pg/mL). CONCLUSIONS: The results suggest that H. pylori infection suppresses the somatostatin secretion.

RESUMO

The present study investigates the etiological roles of premilitary risk factors, military entry conditions, war zone experiences, dissociative reactions to war zone experiences and homecoming reception in the development of chronic posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among Croatian veterans. A total of 150 Croatian war veterans with the diagnosis of chronic combat-related PTSD, who sought treatment at Psychiatric Clinic, Osijek, Croatia, in the period 1993-1998, and who provided complete data, were selected as the sample for the present study from the treatment-seeking group of the ex-soldier population. Structural equation modeling is used to develop an etiological model concerning the relationships of premilitary risk factors, military entry conditions, war zone experiences, dissociative reactions, and homecoming reception with current symptoms of PTSD. An etiological model with satisfactory fit and parsimony was developed. In terms of the magnitude of variables' total contributions to the development of PTSD, war zone experiences are the most influential contributor which is followed by dissociative reactions, homecoming reception, military entry conditions and premilitary risk factors. Statistical significant direct effects to the development of PTSD were found for dissociative reactions and low family postwar support. The etiology of combat-related PTSD among Croatian veterans remains largely unexplained. Partial explanations are omission of other etiological factors, retrospective nature of the data and small study sample. The results are the source of questions for further research.

RESUMO

The placement of the diagnostic category of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among anxiety disorders reflects the recognition that anxiety is a predominant reaction to trauma. Indeed, the symptoms of PTSD overlap considerably with those of other anxiety disorders. The nosological criteria render PTSD as quite a heterogeneous diagnosis. Two individuals with no common symptoms can be diagnosed as having PTSD. In this report we provide information on the phenomenology and psychiatric comorbidity in a sample of 33 patients with combat-related PTSD. The finding of clinical heterogeneity in subjects with combat-related PTSD and the therapy implications are discussed.

RESUMO

Social functioning is assessed according to 84 questioned subjects with schizophrenic disorder and their 84 key figures. Schizophrenic subjects showed significant dysfunction in all reviewed areas of behaviour and social roles. Key figures of all schizophrenic subjects most often showed a positive attitude in regard to the future of the schizophrenic members of their family. In relation to social functioning of the schizophrenic subject and the attitude of family key figures there is a statistically significant difference as well as a relationship. Results of assessment confirmed the impact of family life on social functioning of the schizophrenic patient and stresses the importance of active family support in rehabilitation programs.

RESUMO

While there has been burgeoning interest in the psychiatric literature about the phenomenology and biology of panic disorder, there is little new information about the psychodynamics of this condition. The reintroduction of a psychodynamic perspective could be useful in guiding research strategies to identify traits which predispose to panic and in designing treatments to address such traits. A psychodynamic model hypothesizes a relationship between current psychological functioning, early experiences, and ongoing psychological traits. Recent published reports about the nature of underlying psychodynamics and psychological characteristics of panic disorder are discussed.

RESUMO

The work of the Croatian Defense Council (armed forces of the Croatian citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina) War Hospital at Sturba, outskirts of the town of Livno, is described. The hospital was established in the beginning of April and worked until September 1992. It provided services for the battlefield of approximately 100 km of a very difficult mountainous terrain. The hospital was situated in a concrete dugout taken from the Yugoslav Federal Army. It was well equipped and supplied exclusively by numerous donations. Medical personnel were recruited partly from local medical professionals and partly from volunteers from Croatia. During the 5-month period, 597 patients (571 soldiers and 26 civilians) were admitted. A total of 314 operations, 141 in general and 173 in regional anesthesia, were performed. None of the patients died in the hospital. There was not a single epidemic either among soldiers or civilians in the area.
