Background and objectives: Vaccination hesitancy is a growing problem associated with decreasing chances for the elimination of vaccine-preventable diseases through immunization. This research was conducted to learn about parents' attitudes toward vaccination, particularly against HPV, in the context of their beliefs and fears regarding immunization and the impact of these views on their children's vaccination decisions. An additional goal was to determine what views or convictions most often lead to the phenomenon of delaying or refusing vaccinations, especially HPV vaccines, in the surveyed community. Materials and Methods: An online questionnaire was conducted in which parents marked how they vaccinated their children with mandatory vaccinations and whether they took the opportunity to protect their children with additional vaccinations, including HPV and COVID-19. Respondents also marked the extent to which they agreed with the statements, regarding the safety of vaccinations, doubts about them, as well as popular anti-vaccine myths. Results: A total of 250 questionnaires were collected with data on the immunization of 425 children. Associations between specific beliefs and vaccine abstention were established. The most motivating factor for vaccination against HPV was the parent's awareness that the virus HP is the cause of cancer. The most inhibiting factor was respondent's compliance with the opinion that HPV vaccines can affect the child's sexual activity. Conclusions: The results indicate that information campaigns are needed, especially focusing on vaccine safety and the regularity and transparency of monitoring adverse effects. The obtained results will be used to create educational interventions against vaccination hesitancy more adapted to local conditions.

BACKGROUND Thromboembolic episodes, which are largely mediated by blood platelets, are prevalent chronic complications of diabetes. The mean platelet volume (MPV) serves as a marker for in vivo platelet activation. This study aimed to assess the factors influencing MPV in 106 patients with type 2 diabetes, compared with 59 non-diabetic individuals at a single center in Poland. MATERIAL AND METHODS We performed linear regression analysis, with MPV as the dependent variable and factors such as age, sex, thrombopoiesis-influencing cytokines, blood pressure, body mass index, glycosylated hemoglobin percentage, platelet count, large platelet count, lipid profile parameters, creatinine concentration, estimated glomerular filtration rate, treatment modalities, and comorbidities as independent variables. MPV was measured using the ADVIA 2120 hematology analyzer, with a reference range of 7-12 fL. RESULTS The analysis revealed that in patients with type 2 diabetes, an increase in platelet count by 10×10³/µL resulted in a decrease in MPV by 0.05 (P<0.001), while an increase in large platelet count by 1×10³/µL led to an increase in MPV by 0.18 (P<0.001). Additionally, patients taking ß-blockers or insulin had lower MPVs by 0.77 (P=0.008) and 5.63 (P<0.001), respectively, compared with those not on these medications. CONCLUSIONS This study delineates the relationship between MPV, platelet parameters, and treatment modalities in type 2 diabetes, paving the way for further research to elucidate underlying mechanisms and potential clinical applications.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to determine the phagocytic activity of thrombocytes in patients with gastric cancer and to assess the effect of oral and parenteral preoperative glutamine-based immunonutrition on nutritional status, thrombocyte phagocytic activity, and early postoperative outcomes. METHODS: Patients suffering from invasive gastric cancer had been treated with preoperative immunonutrition with glutamine, and they were compared to patients without nutritional treatment. Nutritional status, percentage of weight loss, and BMI were assessed. Levels of total protein, albumin, cholesterol, triglycerides, platelets, and their phagocytic ability were measured twice. Postsurgical complications were assessed via the Clavien-Dindo classification. RESULTS: Group I consisted of 20 patients with an oral glutamine-10 g daily. Group II had 38 patients who received intravenous glutamine, 1.5 mL per kg body weight of Dipeptiven. Group III consisted of 25 patients who did not receive preoperative immunonutrition. In total, 47% of patients in Group I, 54% of patients in Group II, and 33% of patients in Group III were malnourished. In Group I, the percentage of phagocytizing platelet (%PhP) was 1.1 preoperatively and 1.2 postoperatively. The phagocytic index (PhI) was 1.0 and 1.1. In Group II, %PhP was 1.1 and 1.2 and PhI was 1.0 and 1.1. In Group III, the %PhP was 1.0 and 1.2 and PhI was 1.0 and 1.1. An increase in triglyceride level was observed in both immunonutrition groups. There was a decline in total protein and albumin level in Group II. In Group III, there was a decline in total protein, albumin, and cholesterol level. The total platelet count and PhI were increased in both immunonutrition groups. There was also a rise in %PhP in Group II. In Group III, there was a rise in blood platelet level, %PhP, and PhI. The complication rates were 53% in Group I, 29% in Group II, and 40% in Group III. CONCLUSIONS: In invasive gastric cancer, laboratory nutritional parameters are significantly reduced, causing malnutrition in 44.7% of patients. Oral glutamine supplementation inhibited the postoperative decline in protein metabolism parameters; however, this did not affect the reduction in the percentage of postoperative complications. Glutamine used preoperatively significantly reduced the percentage of serious surgical complications, regardless of the way it was supplemented. Patients with invasive gastric cancer have a significant decrease in platelet phagocytic activity. The administered preoperative parenteral nutrition and the surgical procedure itself influenced the improvement of the phagocytic activity of blood platelets. Glutamine did not have this effect, regardless of the route of administration.

Aim: The aim of our retrospective study was search for new prognostic parameters, which can help quickly and cheaply identify patients with risk for severe course of SARS-CoV-2 infection. Materials and Methods: The following peripheral blood combination biomarkers were calculated: NLR (neutrophil/lymphocytes ratio), LMR (lymphocyte/monocyte ratio), PLR (platelet/lymphocyte ratio), dNLR (neutrophils/(white blood cells - neutrophils)), NLPR (neutrophil/(lymphocyte × platelet ratio)) in 374 patients who were admitted to the Temporary Hospital no 2 of Clinical Hospital in Bialystok (Poland) with COVID-19. The patients were divided into four groups depending on the severity of the course of COVID-19 using MEWS classification. Results: The NLR and dNLR were significantly increased with the severity of COVID-19, according to MEWS score. The AUC for the assessed parameters was higher in predicting death in patients with COVID-19: NLR (0.656, p=0.0018, cut-off=6.22), dNLR (0.615, p=0.02, cut-off=3.52) and LMR (0.609, p=0.03, cut-off=2.06). Multivariate COX regression analysis showed that NLR median above 5.56 (OR: 1.050, P=0.002), LMR median below 2.23 (OR: 1.021, P=0.011), and age >75 years old (OR: 1.072, P=0.000) had a significant association with high risk of death during COVID-19. Conclusion: Our results indicate that NLR, dNLR, and LMR calculated on admission to the hospital can quickly and easy identify patients with risk of a more severe course of COVID-19. Increase NLR and decrease LMR have a significant predictive value in COVID-19 patient's mortality and might be a potential biomarker for predicting death in COVID-19 patients.

Introduction: Various diagnostic tools are used to assess the severity of COVID-19 symptoms and the risk of mortality, including laboratory tests and scoring indices such as the Modified Early Warning Score (MEWS). The diagnostic value of inflammatory markers for assessing patients with different severity of COVID-19 symptoms according to the MEWS was evaluated in this study. Materials and Methods: The concentrations of CRP (C-reactive protein) (immunoassay) and IL6 (interleukin 6) (electrochemiluminescence assay) were determined, and CRP/IL6, CRP/L, and LCR ratios were calculated in blood serum samples collected from 374 COVID-19 patients. Results: We demonstrated that CRP, IL6, CRP/IL6, CRP/L, LCR inflammatory markers increase significantly with disease progression assessed based on the MEWS in COVID-19 patients and may be used to differentiating patients with severe and non-severe COVID-19 and to assess the mortality. Conclusion: The diagnostic value of inflammatory markers for assessing the risk of mortality and differentiating between patients with mild and severe COVID-19 was confirmed.

Doctors, as with all healthcare workers, are a specific risk group due to a high probability of contact with contagious pathogens. An online survey was conducted among Polish doctors to establish their use of protective vaccination to decrease their personal risk of infection. The online survey was conducted using questions about medics' vaccination decisions and approaches. The results revealed that immunization against VPDs for most participants was not adequate based on recommendations or developments in vaccinology. To increase vaccination as a prophylactic method among doctors, especially those not involved in the immunization of patients, an educational campaign is demanded. As non-immunized medics are at risk themselves and are also a threat to the safety of patients, legal changes and the monitoring of vaccine acceptance and perception among medics are required.

Many Polish patients do not inform physicians about supplements they use in addition to prescribed medicines. This may be because they consider dietary supplements as being rather natural products that cannot cause health problems. Although dietary supplements may produce side effects, Poland's food safety system and medical statistics do not recognise the necessity of reporting such cases. However, a different approach is observed in France and the United States where adverse effects of food supplements as well as drugs are reported. The aim of this study was to determine the need for creating in Poland a general model of a register monitoring dietary supplements and their adverse effects. In order to achieve this goal, a detailed comparison between the American and European monitoring systems was made. It showed the relationship between negative symptoms caused by specific components in supplements and t profiles of patients who reported side effects. Additionally, it was found that there is a real risk associated with side effects caused by dietary supplements. Therefore, it necessary to establish in Poland a special system for recording such cases as it should be beneficial to patients, including polypragmatic patients.

PURPOSE: Autoimmune diabetes (AD) in adults includes both the classical form of type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) and latent autoimmune diabetes in adults (LADA). LADA shares clinical and metabolic features with type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Ceramide (Cer) levels negatively correlate with insulin sensitivity in humans and animal models. However, only a few studies have focused on other sphingolipids, including sphingomyelin (SM). Therefore, we determined sphingolipids in patients with newly diagnosed diabetes as possible diagnostic biomarkers. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We evaluated sphingolipids in a cohort of 59 adults with newly diagnosed diabetes without prior hypoglycemic pharmacotherapy to distinguish diabetes mellitus types and for precise LADA definition. All patients with newly diagnosed diabetes were tested for the concentrations of individual Cer and SM species by gas-liquid chromatography. The study included healthy controls and patients with T1DM, T2DM and LADA. RESULTS: SM species were significantly altered in patients with newly diagnosed diabetes compared to healthy controls. SM-C16:0, C16:1, -C18:0, -C18:1, -C18:2, -C18:3, -C20:4, and -C22:6 species were found to be significantly elevated in LADA patients. In contrast, significant differences were observed for Cer species with saturated acyl chains, especially Cer-C14:0, -C16:0, -C18:0 (AD and T2DM), -C22:0, and -C24:0 (T1DM). Following ROC analysis, SM-C16:0, and particularly -C18:1, and -C20:4 may be supportive diagnostic markers for LADA. CONCLUSION: SM profiling in patients with newly diagnosed diabetes could be potentially helpful for differential diagnosis of LADA, T1DM, and T2DM in more challenging cases.

Dietary supplements (DS) in the countries of the European Union falls within the scope of the food law. DS may, however, contain substances that are simultaneously applied in medicinal products as defined in the pharmaceutical law. The presence of such ingredients may cause problems with the product qualification. The phenomenon of applying such borderline ingredients in dietary supplements may require additional regulations, and ensuring them may be problematic. We conducted an analysis aiming to identify dishonest market practices resorted to by the producers and distributors of non-conforming dietary supplements. We examined mostly questioned DS and compared them with data from the RASFF system and registers of medicinal substances and pharmaceutical entities. The results show that some operators tend to re-notify the same products in response to the initiation of official control procedures. Products in the form of capsules or powders were the most common re-notifications within the 50-100 days. Based on the data obtained, it can be concluded that some entities are obliged to document the safety of the product or its compliance with the regulations, use the imperfection of the notification procedure, and re-notify the questioned product in order to keep it on the market despite potential non-compliance.

Objectives: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a multisystem, chronic, T-cell-mediated disease in which immunological abnormalities result in symmetrical small joint inflammation, articular destruction due to synovitis, and extra-articular organ involvement. An important role in the pathogenesis of RA is attributed to a combination of genetic factors and environmental triggers. Literature data on the utility of circulating IL-1ß, IL-6, IFN-γ, and sP-selectin concentration evaluation depending on the activity and advancement of RA seems to be inconclusive. The aim was a case-control study evaluating IL-1ß, IL-6, IFN-γ, and sP-selectin concentrations in 77 RA patients dependent on the Steinbrocker classification as well as the disease activity score with examination of 28 joints (DAS28), and compared to 30 control subjects. Material and methods: Serum IL-1ß, IL-6, IFN-γ, and sP-selectin concentrations were measured using ELISA kits. Results: The concentrations of all molecules tested, except for IL-1ß, were significantly different from the control group. Univariate logistic regression analysis indicated that their levels significantly influenced the likelihood of RA diagnosis. Differences between IL-1ß, IL-6, IFN-γ, and sP-selectin concentrations dependent on the disease activity assessed on the basis of the DAS28 score, as well as the severity of the disease assessed based on the Steinbrocker classification, were not observed. IL-6 positively correlated with the DAS28 score. Conclusions: Among the tested molecules, only IL-6 positively correlated with the DAS28 score. Thus, we postulate that next to C-reactive protein and the erythrocyte sedimentation rate, also IL-6 could be clinically relevant and possibly reflects RA activity. Because recently the IL-6 concentration can be determined in applied in vitro diagnostic tests, it presents us with the possibility to test this protein as a marker of RA activity in routine laboratory practice.

Dietary supplements are health-promoting products. The legal categorization of dietary supplements as foods does not raise concerns, but a general understanding of how they work in the human body seems to deviate from the official definition. Thus, it is necessary to establish effective methods of market control related to dietary supplements. This research aims at assessing the impact of recommendations by various food safety authorities on ingredients used in newly registered products. It probes how the proportions of utilized product ingredients were modified after the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and Chief Sanitary Inspector in Poland (GIS) published their recommendations. Research data on the composition of products comes from the Polish national register of dietary supplements and covers the period from 2012 to 28 November 2021. Note that 103,102 products were analysed for the presence of thirty-seven ingredients, and the joinpoint regression method was applied to assess changing trends related to the use of ingredients. As our research points out, most often, changes in the trend appeared in product ingredients for which the European Food Safety Authority and Chief Sanitary Inspector in Poland issued the recommendation of having the safest level of consumption. However, these changes seem to emerge randomly and should not be unquestionably considered as the result of the published recommendations.

Background and Objectives: Cardiovascular implantable electronic device (CIED) treatment is widely used in modern cardiology. Indications for this type of treatment are increasing. However, a significant proportion of CIED implantation patients require subsequent hospitalization for cardiovascular reasons. Older age and the associated complex clinical picture necessitate multidisciplinary outpatient specialist care for these patients. The aim of this study was to analyze the reasons for subsequent hospitalizations in the cardiology department and the impact of outpatient specialty care on these hospitalizations. To the best of our knowledge, there are no such studies in the available literature. Materials and Methods: This study was conducted on a population of patients treated with CIED. Reasons for subsequent hospitalizations were divided into clinically and statistically valid groups according to the main diagnosis. Using an electronic database, causes of hospitalization were determined based on this diagnosis. Using data on consultations at outpatient specialty clinics, a logistic regression model was created for the probability of subsequent hospitalization for cardiovascular causes according to the specialty of the clinic. Results: The 9-year follow-up included a population of 2071 patients treated with CIED. During the follow-up period, 508 patients (approximately 24.5%) required subsequent hospitalization for cardiovascular reasons. The most common leading causes were heart failure, atrial fibrillation, and coronary artery disease. The need for consultation at outpatient specialty clinics increased the likelihood of hospitalization. Moreover, the need to consult patients in nephrology outpatient, pulmonary disease outpatient, and orthopedic outpatient clinics was the most significant. Conclusions: The use of electronic implantable cardiovascular devices is a very important part of therapy in modern cardiology. The methods for their use are constantly being improved. However, they represent only one stage of cardiac treatment. After CIED procedures, patients require further care in both inpatient and outpatient specialty care settings. In this paper, we outline the reasons for subsequent hospitalizations and the importance of outpatient specialty care in this context. Effective organization of care after CIED procedures may be important in reducing the most expensive component of this care, that is, inpatient treatment.

Background and Objectives: Electrotherapy is a valuable treatment method for patients with heart rhythm disturbances. There are very few observations of long-term patients treated with these techniques. There is a particular lack of this type of study conducted in Eastern European countries. The aim of this single-centre analysis was to evaluate the long-term survival (from 2010 to 2018) of patients treated with electrotherapy devices, taking into account clinical factors facilitating the prognosis of these patients. Materials and Methods: The patients (N = 2071) subsequently included in the study were subjected to the implementation or replacement of cardiac pacemakers. The medical records of all the patients were analysed. Data concerning death, made available by the State Systems Department of the Ministry of Administration and Digitization, were used. Results: The patients with VVI pacemakers had the worst prognosis after the replacement of the devices. Male patients had a worse prognosis, regardless of the kind of device implanted. Advanced atrioventricular conduction disturbances, chronic kidney disease, and hypothyroidism with reduced left ventricular ejection fraction were among the most significant coexisting diseases. Conclusions: The long-term prognosis of patients under different forms of electrotherapy remains poor. Despite the more straightforward technique, a single-chamber device (VVI/AAI) or generator replacement leads to the worst prognosis. The complexity of the clinical picture that stems from coexisting diseases and advanced age is of the utmost importance.

BACKGROUND: Studies conducted so far have focused mainly on the assessment of IL-6 levels in patients with ruptured brain aneurysms. Carrying out detailed studies in patients with un-ruptured brain aneurysms (UIA) would be extremely important, as it would answer the question of whether IL-6 plays also a role in primary aneurysm formation and growth. METHODS: IL-6, S100, NSE, and albumin concentrations in 67 UIA patients and 17 individuals without vascular lesions in the brain were tested using in vitro diagnostic immunoassays according to the manufacturers' instructions. IL-6 Quotient was calculated by dividing cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) IL-6 by serum IL-6. RESULTS: We showed that IL-6 Quotient was significantly higher in UIA patients (1.78) compared to the control group (0.87; p<0.001). Multivariate logistic regression analysis demonstrated that a growth in IL-6 Quotient increases the probability of UIA diagnosis. In UIA patients CSF IL-6 concentration was significantly higher (4.55 pg/ml) compared to the serum concentration (2.39 pg/ml; p<0.001). In both the study and control group, the blood-brain barrier was intact, thus the CSF-blood gradient of the IL-6 concentration in UIA patients was likely to be the expression of local synthesis of the cytokine within the central nervous system. Patients with multiple brain aneurysms had significantly higher CSF IL-6 levels (5.08 pg/ml) compared to individuals with a single aneurysm (4.14 pg/ml; p=0.0227). CONCLUSION: This totality of the may suggest IL-6 as a biomarker for UIA formation; however, further studies are needed to unequivocally confirm clinical application of IL-6 concentration evaluation.

The COVID-19 pandemic has exerted a strong impact on numerous areas of everyday life. The aim of this study was to check how the pandemic influenced the composition of dietary supplements and other functional food products placed on the market till March 2021, compared to 2019. For this purpose, data concerning the registered products and reports of popularity of online searches of terms connected with vitamins and minerals were used. The results of the study made it possible to determine the group of ingredients especially popular during the pandemic. Their use in products after the announcement of the pandemic was significantly higher than in the preceding period. In conclusion, it can be shown that the pandemic changed the ingredients used in functional foods-mainly as far as vitamins and minerals are concerned. The highest proportional increase in its use in dietary supplements was noted for potassium. Personalized therapy has also become more popular, promoted by one of the manufacturers of dietary supplements active during the pandemic. Moreover, different phases of the pandemic were characterized by the popularity of different ingredients among the consumers-first, these were immunity-boosting ingredients, then those that improved psychological functions, and finally mixtures with universal health effects.

INTRODUCTION: Taking into account the possibility of myelin-associated proteins having a role in brain tumour development, the study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic usefulness of myelin-associated proteins (Nogo-A, MAG, OMgp) released into extracellular space in patients with brain tumours. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Protein concentration in primary brain tumour (n = 49) and non-tumoural subjects (n = 24) was measured in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and serum by means of ELISA. Immunohistochemistry for IDH1-R132H was done on 5-µm thick formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tumour sections with the use of an antibody specific for the mutant IDH1-R132H protein. RESULTS: The receiver operator characteristic curve analysis showed that CSF Nogo-A and serum MAG were useful in differentiating patients with primary brain tumour from non-tumoural individuals. This was also true in the case of the separate analysis of the astrocytic tumour versus non-tumoural groups and the meningeal tumour versus non-tumoural groups. Neither Nogo-A nor MAG or OMgp concentrations were significantly different, in serum or CSF, between IDH1 wild-type astrocytic brain tumour patients compared to IDH1 mutant patients. CONCLUSIONS: Our results indicated the potential usefulness of CSF Nogo-A and serum MAG evaluation as circulating biomarkers of primary brain tumours. Because blood is relatively easy to obtain, future research should be conducted to explicitly indicate the value of serum MAG concentration evaluation as a brain tumour biomarker.Key messagesMyelin-associated proteins may be circulating brain tumour biomarkers.Nogo-A and MAG proteins seem to be the most useful in brain tumour diagnosis.Decreased CSF Nogo-A concentration is an adverse prognostic factor for patients' survival.

INTRODUCTION: Even though incidence of recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy (RLNP) is low, it affects importantly the quality of life of patients and remains one of main medicolegal litigation problems in surgery. Intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM) has become widely accepted tool helping in recurrent laryngeal nerve identification, however no clear association of IONM with RLNP rate has been demonstrated. The aim of our study was to assess whether training in IONM influences rates of RNLP after thyroid surgery as an independent factor. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We analysed retrospectively 1235 patients who underwent thyroidectomy at the 1st Department of General and Endocrine Surgery, Medical University of Bialystok. Possible risk factors for RLNP were evaluated: application or not of IONM, the extent of surgery or thyroid pathology in correlation with surgeons' experience in IONM (trained or untrained). RESULTS: There were 2351 nerves at risk (NAR) and 39 RNLP were diagnosed after thyroid surgery (1.66%). Surgeons trained in IONM performed 52.2% of all operations (1200 NAR) with 7 RLNP (0.58%), whereas not-trained had 32 RLNP for 1151 NAR (2.8%; p < 0.001). After 182 thyroidectomies (357 NAR) guided by IONM (14.7%) 3 RLNP were observed (0.84%) vs. 36 palsies per 1994 NAR without IONM (1.81%; p = 0.189). The highest danger of RLNP was reported after reoperations and the lowest after subtotal thyroidectomies. We found no association between thyroid pathology and RLNP rate. CONCLUSIONS: According to our study training in IONM decreases chances of RLNP especially during total or near total thyroidectomy.

INTRODUCTION: Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory disease associated with metabolic disturbances and liver dysfunction. Both serum fatty acids (FA) and ceramides (Cer) have structural functions but also are signal molecules that could be involved in the pathogenesis of liver dysfunction. AIM: To assess the concentration of the circulating FA and Cer in correlation with the alanine aminotransferase (ALT) blood level in psoriatic patients. In addition, we have examined the relationship between ALT concentration and severity of the disease and inflammation markers. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Eighty-five patients with psoriasis and 32 healthy controls were enrolled in the study. Patients were divided into 2 groups according to ALT blood levels. Serum concentration of 14 FA and 14 Cer were measured by gas-liquid chromatography. The results were correlated with the Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI), serum lipid profile, and inflammatory markers. RESULTS: We observed higher PASI score (p = 0.01) and higher C-reactive protein (p = 0.02) concentration in the group of psoriatic patients with high ALT. Serum ALT positively correlated with saturated fatty acids (SFA) (p = 0.01, r = 0.27) and SFA/unsaturated fatty acids (UFA) ratio (p = 0.01, r = 0.26). ALT negatively correlated with UFA level (p = 0.008, r = -0.28). Lignoceric ceramide positively correlated with ALT level (r = 0.22; p = 0.045) in psoriatic patients. CONCLUSIONS: Patients with severe psoriasis are predisposed to the development of liver dysfunction. We have demonstrated disturbances of serum fatty acid and sphingolipid profile in psoriatic patients, which may trigger liver disease.

The aim of the study was the evaluation whether in primary colorectal cancer (CRC) patients (n = 55): age, sex, TNM classification results, WHO grade, tumor location (proximal colon, distal colon, rectum), tumor size, platelet count (PLT), mean platelet volume (MPV), mean platelet component (MCP), levels of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), cancer antigen (CA 19-9), as well as soluble lectin adhesion molecules (L-, E-, and P-selectins) may influence circulating inflammatory biomarkers: IL-6, CRP, and sCD40L. We found that CRP concentration evaluation in routine clinical practice may have an advantage as a prognostic biomarker in CRC patients, as this protein the most comprehensively reflects clinicopathological features of the tumor. Univariate linear regression analysis revealed that in CRC patients: (1) with an increase in PLT by 10 × 103/µL, the mean concentration of CRP increases by 3.4%; (2) with an increase in CA 19-9 of 1 U/mL, the mean concentration of CRP increases by 0.7%; (3) with the WHO 2 grade, the mean CRP concentration increases 3.631 times relative to the WHO 1 grade group; (4) with the WHO 3 grade, the mean CRP concentration increases by 4.916 times relative to the WHO 1 grade group; (5) with metastases (T1-4N+M+) the mean CRP concentration increases 4.183 times compared to non-metastatic patients (T1-4N0M0); (6) with a tumor located in the proximal colon, the mean concentration of CRP increases 2.175 times compared to a tumor located in the distal colon; (7) in patients with tumor size > 3 cm, the CRP concentration is about 2 times higher than in patients with tumor size ≤ 3 cm. In the multivariate linear regression model, the variables that influence the mean CRP value in CRC patients included: WHO grade and tumor localization. R2 for the created model equals 0.50, which indicates that this model explains 50% of the variance in the dependent variable. In CRC subjects: (1) with the WHO 2 grade, the mean CRP concentration rises 3.924 times relative to the WHO 1 grade; (2) with the WHO 3 grade, the mean CRP concentration increases 4.721 times in relation to the WHO 1 grade; (3) with a tumor located in the rectum, the mean CRP concentration rises 2.139 times compared to a tumor located in the distal colon; (4) with a tumor located in the proximal colon, the mean concentration of CRP increases 1.998 times compared to the tumor located in the distal colon; if other model parameters are fixed.

Fatty acid binding protein 5 (FABP5) is elevated in psoriatic keratinocytes and could be involved in systemic metabolic disturbances in psoriasis. The aim of the study was to evaluate serum FABP5 in obese and non-obese psoriatic patients, to assess the relationship between FABP5 and the duration, severity of the disease, inflammatory and metabolic markers and influence of treatment with narrowband-ultraviolet B (NB-UVB). Seventy-four patients (30 treated with NB-UVB) with psoriasis were enrolled in the study. The serum concentrations of FABP5 were measured using Human FABP5 Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay kit. Serum fatty acids were measured by gas-liquid chromatography. Serum FABP5 levels in psoriatic patients were higher versus control group (P < 0.001). FABP5 in patients with PASI > 20 was higher compared to the mild group (PASI < 10) (P < 0.001) and serum FABP5 correlated positively with PASI score (r = 0.41, P < 0.001). There was also positive correlation between FABP5 and basic inflammation indices. Decrease of PASI after NB-UVB treatment (P < 0.001) was observed and accompanied by decrease of the serum FABP5 (P = 0.007). FABP5 is a potential marker of psoriasis, its severity and clinical outcome after therapy with NB-UVB. FABP5 may reflect metabolic disturbances in psoriatic patients.
